Seivarden's awkward conversations with Breq in Sword are truly so legendary. I really love the one where she visits Breq's quarters to drink tea and she desperately wants to ask Breq why the fuck their junior officer is looking and acting like someone who's been brainwashed/tortured, but instead she says "so hey I've been thinking a lot about what your masturbation habits must have been like back when you were a spaceship"

in non locked tomb news (im sure there are some people who are sick of it and Im Sorry) i reread Ancillary Justice and wowee I absorbed so much more from the audiobook than i ever did reading it with my own two eyeorbs! the emperors name has been echoing in my mind for two weeks because the way the narrator pronounces it hits Just Right and feels good to my brain lol
anyway i think?? i want to read book two now???? its a nice little book on its own (which somehow seemed so BIG when i first read it) but im more interested now in how it continues than i was a few years ago

Hello! Your blog convinced me to read the Murderbot Diaries, and I am enjoying it SO much! Do you know any similar sci-fi works with minimal romance? When I look it up online I get a lot of fantasy recs which isn’t really what I’m looking for.
hi there! i'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying the series! thank you for validating my ongoing decision to spam my followers with murderbot content. every time a new person reads tmbd, a blogger gets their wings <3
as for similar works...have you read the imperial radch trilogy by ann leckie? it's three novels: ancillary justice, ancillary sword, and ancillary mercy. it's scifi, the protag/narrator is an AI, and to my memory there's no romance for that character. (side characters do have romances that are given more narrative attention than the romances in tmbd, though.) this series is also doing some interesting things with gender (especially for 2014, when it came out) and narration, and it has things to say about personhood, power, responsibility, and autonomy that i think might interest you if you like those aspects of tmbd.
of course in many ways the series is quite different from tmbd, but i class them together both mentally and on my bookshelf, and i know a lot of other readers do as well. what i would say to someone going from tmbd to ancillary justice, to manage their expectations, would be that the plotting is more complex and takes much longer to play out, but ultimately it ends up working for me personally better than tmdb's plots, some of which i still don't fully follow. the worldbuilding, which is on a much grander scale, is meticulous and is not immediately explained to you, so you might feel a bit lost for a while, but if you stick it out it should start to come together. also, i think one thing people love about tmbd is the force of personality that comes through immediately in murderbot's narration, so i would warn you that you won't fall in love with the main character of ancillary justice from page one, not because she's not also a compelling and lovable character but because the style is more subtle.
i don't know if that's enough information for you to figure out if it sounds like something you'd like to try, and unfortunately i haven't read the series in a few years so it's possible i'm forgetting something else about it that's super relevant, but hopefully people will respond to this with their own recs! y'all, please chime in if you have anything to add about the imperial radch for anon or if you can think of other books that might be similar in the ways anon is looking for.

also yeah murderbot is like . it’s fun? but it’s not doing much for me that other books don’t do better . other books On This List even
sorry i literally just sent u an ask abt how murderbot does nothing for me but like the whole premise of this blog & especially the baru context of the poll is Women With Problems and murderbot is really like . granted i haven’t finished the series so i may be missing something but. where are they! where are the women with problems!! murderbot itself is a fun character but doesn’t qualify to me in that way. it’s doing a different thing. other books have characters that aren’t women but still manage to scratch that itch for me (see: breq from imperial radch, who is a spaceship & also from a culture that makes no gender distinctions)
well i will say that women with problems is not Necessarily the point of this blog as so much as it is the natural outcome of this blog, because its hard to write engaging characters that don't have any problems, for obvious reason.
based on what people have said i dont think the murderbot diaries are going to be super up my alley, but they're popular enough and have been recommended enough that i'd consider reading at least some of them for the sake of being able to articulate why this is so. plus if there's one thing i have learned over my years of tumblr blogging it's that part of my niche is letting people watch me complain about stuff
all this to say that if it wins the poll by a significant margin ill definitely give it a whirl and go in with an open mind, but i'm not expecting it to be lifechanging

Hi!! I’m the artist who made the Micky/secunit fanart and I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful tags 😭😭 they were so kind!!
(Also YES ancillary and raven tower- just objectively the best books ever- I should really do more fanart of them but alas,,,, I am lazy 😌)
+ If you are looking for a good next sci fi fix i would recommend A Memory Called Empire especially if you are into linguistics- lots of imperial/colonial language fun :)
Anyway! I talk too much and I hope you have a wonderful day
omg omg hi 🥺 you're so welcome, i really love your murderbot fanart!! i think i actually have another one of your posts with imperial radch fanart somewhere in my drafts??? (aka found it when i was too lazy to add tags and saved it to get back to later) (i have 300+ drafts though so. uh. not the best system. but i am currently slowly going through them and queueing stuff, so i will find it again eventually! :') might actually try to dig it up later)
i always love it when other tmd fans also like ann leckie's work (and vice versa)! especially with artists, i just get so excited when i go look for more tmd art on someone's blog and get surprise bonus imperial radch art :')
also thank you so much for the book rec, I feel very seen haha! that sounds right up my alley, i'm going to add it to my tbr list!!

about the reviewer: i'm a 28, white, bi, nonbinary from the u.s. my pronouns are they/them and you can call me A. i have a mfa in creative writing, which might peak through in how i review things. my favorite genres are science fiction, fantasy, romance, and mystery which will bias my reading habits. [credit for profile pic] you may find me writing romance under the penname Willow B. Sullivan.
faq
q: can i send a rec?
a: yes, please! if there are major trigger warnings i'd appreciate them, but they aren't a requirement. my only ask is please don't send anything where pregnancy or incest are a large part of the narrative.
q: can i submit a review?
a: not at the moment, but i may reconsider as i get this more put together.
q: will you cover x media which has a really popular ot3/ot4/etc.?
a: no, though i may do a special edition posts on some of my favorites. probably the biggest debate was Leverage/Leverage: Redemption but sadly at present i don't feel i can count among "canon" (though i will be popping the biggest bottles if it ever does become fully canon). i may rethink the "word of god" type canon later, but for now, that's where i land.

Queer books: Provenance, by Ann Leckie
In honor of Pride Month, and the fact that this is technically a book blog, I bring you 31 queer books I like. Today, 2/31.
Tumblr media
Ann Leckie is known for the Ancillary books, and I love those so so much, but I want to mention this book, because it doesn’t get the love it deserves.
This book is set in the same universe as the Ancillary books, just after the end of Ancillary Mercy, but the humans in this book are not part of the Radch. Ingray, our main character, is the foster daughter of a politically important family on her planet, and she just wants to be recognized as a worthy part of that family. This book has aliens, found family, and really fun little creatures with too many eyes. Also, queers.
Ann Leckie’s new book comes out next week, and I expect it’ll have queer people in it too. I’m very excited.

I've said this before but Breq and Seivarden on the bridge in AJ are so funny because they're like
BREQ: How dare this person I kidnapped and punched into unconsciousness not want to be my friend
SEIVARDEN: How dare this person who kidnapped me and punched me into unconsciousness not want to be my friend

It's not a perfect parallel but im thinking about garal telling ingray "I decided it would be better to stay with you" and seivarden at the end of justice telling breq again and again she's sticking with her

So, a million and a half years ago, I think on my old blog, you told me I should read Ancillary Justice and like hell yeah, I'm def reading a recommendation from a beloved mutual. And the first few chapters were disorienting in a way my ADHD Did Not Like but. I spent several years Knowing that if I could get past those first few chapters you'd be Right Finally broke the barrier in my brain preventing me from enjoying audiobooks and yeah, you were right. Fantastic book, 12/10, would trap myself in a car with no way to stop the audio without pulling over in order to force my ADHD to cooperate again. Love a character who is both the ultimate failgirl and a wet cat of a man at once (also I've been having a fun time going "wait, what do you mean that's how that's spelled" now that I've seen all the character and place names written down)
fantastic. i remember reccing it to you!!! it was indeed a literal million years but you did muscle yourself into reading that book all right! the imperial radch series was my Obsession for A Long Ass Time. incredible. you've gone through some heroic efforts to read it, that stuff can indeed be kind of dense and disorienting. but man did it just sink its teeth into my mind.
wow this is delightful in many ways... is this book Not simply something that is premium material for Thinking Thoughts Forever??? listen if you ever want to think radch thoughts at me. i am here.
local failgirl is a poor little meow meow. this series is truly full of the Most characters of all time. so many of them are literal war criminals. and i can't stop thinking about them fondly. anaander mianaai my beloved.
also loooolll the audiobook name spelling game. must have been a real trip with these for sure
it's also one of those books that's so enjoyable to re-read... but anyways. i'm glad you did end up enjoying it.
(i finally shook the years-long ancillary justice obsession free by becoming obsessed with the Murderbot Diaries a few years ago. xD)

in lieu of the dog days of summer
monday, aug 22, 2022
on my phone again in the hopes it’ll help me preserve (some) brevity! it has not worked! vague but important spoilers below for winter’s orbit (and a little for the left hand of darkness). it’s been a while, actually, since a summer of mine has had real, actual dog days—it requires a combination of heat, breathlessness, and a feeling like time has suspended which is actually quite hard to get, as an adult. you’d think the last two years would have but, for me anyway, not really? anyway, i think we finally got there this weekend—neat. dry grass, bright days, breathlessness. thunder woke me at 2am last night, and it’s been raining on and off all day, at last, at last. i think i’m calmer than I have been in…weeks.
reading it’s been a week+ (a summer, maybe) of space operas. listening to murderbot 4 network effect any time i’m on public transit (and thinking abt how tuning in and out of the events in the audio book while commuting is a bit like having them all coming to me in a feed, actually), got 80% of the way into a memory called empire before the loan expired and i was so so bereft that i’ve turned around and started rereading ancillary justice (fascinating to pair with murderbot, i should talk about that next time). we’re talking empire, we’re talking what it means to be colonized, human- and person-ness, we’re talking gender, and cool info tech, and more political machinations and unpronounceable names than you can shake a stick at. but today’s post is for everina maxwell’s winter’s orbit, since that’s what i actually finished most recently. very good experience, i found it immediately engaging, a good mix of all the above Space Opera Themes with then lots of small touches of humor and genuine fun romance to stand out. i saw a blurb describing this as red, white, and royal blue plus imperial radch, but honestly i think it reads better as its own thing, or at most as a love letter to the left hand of darkness. (it’s not as anthropological or poetic, but there is Gender, there’s negotiations abt joining an echumen-esque galactic alliance, there’s a winter camping trip. winter’s orbit is for people who really wanted genly and estraven to get it on in that tent). is an arranged political marriage tropey as hell? yeah! did i have fun with the miscommunication and unreliable narrators? yeah! was this also one of the most searing portrayals of spousal abuse i’ve ever read? yeah. you can see it immediately if you know what to look for, the details are peppered in very intelligently. we hear the term gaslighting thrown around quite loosely these days— that’s not how i’m using it. i mean quite seriously, it’s clear through flashbacks that a character has previously been made to second guess their own perceptions by their spouse, has had their communications with friends and family shut off, privacy invaded, sense of self eroded, been shamed, manipulated, and taught to anticipate outbursts and apologizes to avoid them, and is an unreliable narrator in part because of negative self-talk learned through abuse. it’s heartbreaking. but there’s a journey of healing started, and watching the other protagonist’s righteous fury was very satisfying. also getting to destroy his own evil ex (even in a hallucination scenario) helped.
listening been spending a lot of time with my spot of fy top songs of 2021 playlist. you know how you sometimes scroll your own blog to bask in your own good taste? a bit like that. it’s also very funny, bc there are songs on there i one thousand percent have barely heard once—i guess they have to algorithmically pad it out to reach 100 songs for weirdos like me. anyway, here’s dom fera’s ‘easy thing’, which grooves like a lazy sunday mid morning bop if I’ve ever heard one but has lyrics that go surprisingly hard!
youtube
watching finished up season 2 of gentleman jack with @hematiterings (including much consternation at some of the rushed, disjointed, mystifying editing in the last episode), watched some full metal alchemist: brotherhood with her, @pep-squad-lizzie and @dimir-charmer, and finally started ‘Turning Red’ for myself! only about halfway through it, and so far the toronto details are my favorite. local friends please weigh in, but it seems like it must be fun to watch if you grew up here. i have also watched another episode of oath of love, bringing me up to 12 i think? @witcheryen they just surprised gu wei with the house warming (bet he haaaaated that) and lzx saw the hot female doctor at his window. gasp.
playing still on my stardew bullshit—more cut scenes with more characters has been really lovely, and leah gave me her statue! i have also purchased a cow and named her marigold ☺️ then tonight, got to play some more ‘it takes two’ with my xbox buddy; i have liked each level of this thing more (we’re done with the squirrels and wasps now and have reached the space-faring baboon!! the scenery is so starry and beautiful!) and have still got to hold myself back from shouting at the dialogue.
making repotted my poor fucking nasturtium, which had been gnawed off at the stem by a squirrel again. it has put out some root hairs after sitting in water for a few days, so it’s back in soil to see if it can actually pull through, but i haven’t much hope. meanwhile, the rest of the garden is starting to really produce!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
working on anyone besides me not notice we’d skipped this section last week XD. which is hilarious bc I do think about work almost constantly, however it is depressing so a break isn’t a bad thing. still, as a small check-in, I’ve more or less reframed my chapter plans in my head (‘offering a reading rather than a definition; this isn’t a lexicographical project’) and now just get to explain and justify those to my supervisor on wednesday. still reading this welsh article, as part of getting extra tutoring yn gymraeg. he was very nice to me last week, which is good bc one word conversational gambits still seem to be my limit. oh, and the post doc / publication chat i had with a supportive prof last week thoroughly shook me. everything’s dandy.

other notes:
no queues no masters we blog like men (erratically and when the mood strikes)
90% of the time i don’t really tag stuff other than for personal categorisation, there will be untagged posts about weed and horny stuff i’d be sorry but this is my bedroom and i get to put shit on the walls
i try to stay out of discourse but i am unfortunately also a little hater and very opinionated. also i like arguing on the internet and being generally a nuisance to keeping the peace.
