The Battle of Sutjeska Memorial Monument Complex in the Valley of Heroes Tjentište is a village in the municipality of Foča, Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It lies entirely within Sutjeska National Park. The village was known for the war memorials commemorating the 1943 Battle of the Sutjeska (Operation Fall Schwarz); the Valley of Heroes (1971) by Miodrag Živković and the concrete Memorial House by Ranko Radović, which contains unfinished frescoes by famed Croatian artist Krsto Hegedušić. The Battle of Sutjeska Memorial Monument Complex was designed by Miodrag Živković & Ranko Radović. The materials used were poured concrete and rebar. In an interview with the creator of this monument, Miodrag Živković, in which he discusses the symbolism of this structure, he is quoted as saying: "The idea is that of breakthrough and victory, the two blocks with the figures inside represent the breaking of the circle created around the Partisan forces. The opening takes the shape of the fighters, very stylized, in an architectonic manner, and simple geometric forms to emphasize the presence of men of the individual fighters in the columns, because it is those columns of men that made the breakthrough at Sutjeska possible." #croatiainfiltration #bosniaandherzegovina #republikasrpska #roadtrip #spomenikdatabase #brutalist #tjentiste #sutjeska #canon6d #filmmaking #producer #production #locationscouting #photography #nationalgeographic #architecture #yugoslavia #architecturephoto #concrete #abandonedlocation #urbex https://www.instagram.com/croinfiltration/p/Bu83p6Gn7b4/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1a7xbp3dlyhfl

Ghastly Soviet Brutalist Monuments Scattered Around Post-Yugoslavian Balkan States
Tjentiste
In the mountainous heart of Bosnia's Sutjeska National Park, the Battle of Sutjeska Memorial Monument Complex can be found nestled on a small hill in the Valley of Heroes. On the site of Tito's daring escape at the Battle of Sutjeska in 1943, a vast and glorious monument-park was built and competed in 1958. The area is now a small safe-haven in what became a minefield during the Balkan conflicts, and it is not considered safe to venture into the surrounding countryside. Recent landslides have put the monument at risk of collapse.
The iconic monument designed by Miodrag Živković & Ranko Radović is illuminated at night with strong floodlights and captured here over a long exposure with the aid of some gentle moonlight.
