with shaky thighs and bloody knuckles, you fish a cigarette out of your pant pocket. the carton was crumpled and bloody, and inside a sole cigarette greets you. sighing, you take it out of the carton, throwing it away. luis’ hand meets your lower back, it’s gentle; tender. “let me.” he mutters, breath tickling the side of your face. you hand over the cigarette, watching him light it. luis gives it back, observing how you take a drag. the old building the four of you were holed up in creaks in the dead of night as a cold gust of wind that runs through the porch makes you shudder.

“i would give you my jacket, but i’m not sure where you put it.” luis half jokes, as it was true that you had thrown his jacket in a rushed haste to get his clothes off. “sorry.” you smile a little. luis hums, taking the cigarette from between your fingers to inhale a slow drag. you watch him, eyes scanning over his face, how the shadows move in the dim light of the lantern behind the two of you. “what..? do i have something on my face?” luis chuckles, blowing smoke away from you so it wouldn’t hit your face. “no, you’re just handsome.” you reply, taking your cigarette back. “charmer.” he teases, nudging your side gently. you give him an amused hum, looking back out over the dead fields around you. “do you think things will go back to normal?”

luis let’s out an uneasy hum, shrugging a little. “it’s hard to say. we’ll just have to wait and see.” he responds, hand trailing around to your hip, thumb stroking soft lines over your slightly exposed skin. you nod solemnly, letting him steal your cigarette again. moving from the door and leaning against the railing of the porch, you prop your head up on your hand, ignoring how the old wood pressed uncomfortably into your elbow. luis watches you for a moment; he knows you miss your family, your friends. “it will be okay, mi amor.” (my love) he tells you, closing the door gently behind him and letting his hand rest on your back once more. “yeah… i just- i don’t know.” you sigh, accepting your cigarette from your fling. “just try to relax. we need to get some rest anyway, there’s a lot of travelling to do tomorrow.” he mutters, body slightly leaning against yours.

“yeah…” you mumble around the bud of your cig, inhaling slowly. luis’ hand rubs soft circles over your back, as if to soothe you. luis looks out to the fields, seeing an infected person hobbling around aimlessly in the moonlight. “we should go inside.” he tells you. you watch it too, yet you stay silent, unmoving. luis doesn’t budge, yet he does look to you. you blink slowly, watching it stumble and turn, your cigarette dangling from your fingers. “hermosa.” (gorgeous) luis leans a bit closer, finally drawing your attention to him. “c’mon. let’s go inside.” he insists, watching you glance at the infected once more. silently, you snuff your cigarette on the balcony, flicking it away.

luis takes your hand, pulling you inside before the infected noticed either of you. leon’s head raises from the couch as he watches the two of you through half-lidded eyes. “go back to bed leon.” you tell him, patting his arm in passing. he hums, letting his head fall back onto his pillow. luis wordlessly follows you into the other room, glancing at ashley who was curled up comfortably on a chair, snoozing away. you sigh softly, settling onto the old mattress on the floor. luis lays beside you, bringing your bruised knuckles up to his lips, giving them a tender kiss. you look at him, eyes tired. “what’s the matter, hermosa?” (gorgeous) luis asks, voice hushed. “it’s nothing. m’just tired.” you respond, letting your head rest against luis’ shoulder. you envy how he was always warm. luis let’s his arm wrap around your shoulders, gently squeezing you. “rest then, cariña.” (honey) luis tells you, cradling you close. you hum, using his arm as a makeshift pillow.

luis knows he’ll have a crick in his neck and his arm will be numb when he wakes up, but it would be worth it.

I'm replaying Resident Evil 4! It was the first RE game I really got into. I played, I think 2? when I was really young, like probably too young to be playing such games, but I never beat it. And I just love this game. I'm excited but scared for the remake.
