So, if you've been on Re:Zero tumblr long enough you might've heard of the "Reid Astrea calls Subaru and Julius boyfriends" line. Which is funny enough on its own, but what kills me is that, IIRC, he actually says it to Amnesiabaru.

So imagine an AU where Amnesiabaru takes him seriously and actually believes him and Julius were dating before he lost his memories.

Subaru: "Dang it [Natsuki Subaru], you had a perfectly sexy silver-haired half-elf, and you went and fell for the pain-in-the-ass knight?"

Subaru may have lost his memories, but he hasn’t forgotten the importance of committing to the bit.

“Everyone is physically attractive” - a thing that people who are only attracted to one gender definitely say.

Subaru: So what are we? Julius: (How am I supposed to explain that I want to be friends, but he’s going through a one-sided “rivals-to-lovers” arc towards me?) Julius: We’re… friends. Yeah. Subaru: ? Why was there a pause there?

There’s not one left to remember left to remember Rem. But worse then being entirely forgotten, there are people who know that no one remembers Rem. This is messed up.

No you didn’t Subaru. You said exactly what you where supposed to.

I’m glad it’s canon that Subaru has watched magical girl shows (or at least familiar enough with them that he has the poses memorized)

So I know the Gluttony IF exists, and because of that, on a logical level I know that Subaru wasn’t going to go through with the plan to read everyone’s books of the dead….

But I was not comfortable with how close he got.

Yeah at this point, Subaru has lost his memories, has been possessed by [Natsuki Subaru], and is being haunted by the memories of Meili, leaving him in a very unstable state, mentally. To top this off, Reid (who is supposed to be a trial) is roaming the tower, the tower is also being attacked by a horde of witchbeasts. Also in a previous loop it looked like everyone killed each other? And then the whole tower was swallowed by a shadow? And there hasn’t been an explanation for any of this yet.

So I’m with Subaru. What IS going on.

Like I mentioned before, logically I knew that Subaru wasn’t going to kill all of his friends….

But that didn’t stop me from breathing an audible sigh of relief after reading Subaru reach that decision himself.

Rather than Screenshot the entire chapter, I just decided to screenshot the title. Just…. This chapter. They trust him. They saved him. Emilia trusts him. Emilia saved him. And in return, he’s going to save all of them.

No Beatrice, Subaru’s actually completely right about all of this.

I wanted her to be allowed to make connections outside of her devotion to her master! I wanted her to have friends! Shuala deserved better.

So that was Arc 6.

I feel like my heart was torn out, sent on a rollercoaster ride, was stabbed a bunch of times, Was put back together with tender love and care, and then was shoved back into my body. And then that process was repeated several times.

I guess I’m off to read the short stories, the EX novels, and the IF routes now. Or maybe just lie down and emotionally process everything some more.

Thoughts on Rem and Ram <3

One of the first ever hints we get to how different they actually are is their little twin-talk routine. Along with the discussion of their "competency" as maids, and the Red Oni/Blue Oni story. And I think it's a really cool little detail!

Rem always speaks first. "Nee-sama, Nee-sama," referencing Ram as Nee-sama is a title that implies respect above everything else. Of course you can tell they love each other so very much but Rem is emphasizing how her older sister is the "superior one", which, I'm pretty sure, is why Subaru says that Ram gets special treatment. It is also interesting, though, that Rem is the one who speaks first in the routine- despite being the more insecure of the two. Ram is definitely more confident in her ability to mess with people and make rude comments, so why does Rem go first?

When Ram speaks, she simply calls Rem by her name, instead of Onee-chan or Nee-chan, and I'm curious about it. You'd think they'd have matching titles for each other, the Nee-sama and Nee-chan or something, but no, they very specifically do not. Even in a conversation pattern where they're playing into the "identical twin dynamic". I wonder if Ram is using this to remind Rem that she's her own person? Like, of course Ram loves her sister- and it's not a sign of disrespect. But she seems to have chosen to address her by name rather than by their relationship, and given how much she wants Rem to be remembered and loved by others, it might be a way to make sure they remember her as an individual. Interesting, given what happens to Rem.

I do think that this was Ram's indirect way of pushing Rem to be more confident in herself. She's always been able to tell how insecure she was, but I don't think she ever knew what to do about it, because the source of their problems came from the circumstances of their birth. Given how may years it'd been from the burning of their clan to arc 2, it surprised me a little to hear that Rem had held onto her inferiority complex and guilt for that long, when Ram cared about her wellbeing so much. I think if they'd had enough long talks about it, it could have healed (at least mostly) over time. I think it leaves the idea that either Ram was unsure of how to address it, or Rem refused to talk about it at all. Probably both.

I do also have my "Rem has OCD/OCD traits" theory because of how she. You know. Decides she needs to spend the entire rest of her life filling Ram's shoes and protecting her to atone for *one thought* she had in an extremely traumatic event. There's also the whole business with her being attached to the idea of living/dying for people she cares about as her ultimate proof of love, and her excessive willingness to hurt or kill *potential* threats to Keep Her People Safe. That's not to equate any disorder to a potential to hurt others! The world of Re:Zero frowns on murder in many cases, but it is far more willing to accept it as a response to threats- it can easily be forgiven with a good justification. The reason I bring this up is because Rem is very willing to act on her own to use Extreme Measures because she is *so certain she's right, and she HAS to do this to ease burdens on her loved ones.

For these reasons, I find it very interesting that Rem was brought back into the story without her memory. We get to see a more unfiltered version of her. She still feels guilt extremely easily and holds onto certain ideas with a little too much strength, but she doesn't put up acts for people and she hasn't Attached Herself to someone. With no memory of Ram or Subaru, she has learned to think for herself and be more independent. It's mentioned that her personality is more similar to Ram's than it seemed to be before. I know many people are annoyed with how she's lost her memories because they want Their Rem back, but I honestly think this is a really interesting and worthwhile study of her character. I almost wonder if she actually would be happier if she never got her name and memories back, if she could live without her traumas, even if she is fully aware that she's missing a large part of herself.

Personally, I want to see her grow as she is, and develop her relationships and mindset and way of life from here, and *then* face her memories again. Her learning to love herself and have self worth and then facing the her that couldn't... that would be really cool, I think. I want to see her and Ram develop a new sisterly relationship and I want to see how it compares and contrasts with the one they had before. I love their dynamic, and I love how Tappei Nagatsuki is treating the reunion of the sisters. I am very interested, too, to see how things play out with Spica, given this is the closest kind of Capital P Protectiveness we've seen from her, in a similar way to how she cared for Ram and Subaru pre-gluttony.

She's definitely got a strong theme of Memory and Sleep as concepts, and I've been wondering if her name was intentional. Along with Ram being the hornless oni. Ram.

The fact that Ram may have spent this long trying to make sure everybody remembered Rem's name, just for her to be forgotten by *everybody*... man .

So this is like Wanderer's situation but sprinkles a bit more angst

Because speaking of Anime, in Re:Zero S2...

Rem is put into a coma, because her name and memory got eaten. Imagine Traveler's face when they mention Diluc and Paimon is like "Huh? Who's Diluc?"

I don't know if Kaeya, Zhongli, and Venti will remember Diluc or not but if they do, man they need a hug, especially Kaeya. He just lost someone precious again, but this is way too cruel because damn, nobody remembers Diluc and he's in a freaking coma.

(Light Novel spoiler alert: Rem will wake up although idk how long time pass, probably months cause I don't read the LN but she doesn't remember anything)

When your name got eaten, your existence will be forgotten.

When your memory got eaten, you won't remember anything.

So if both are eaten, you'll be in a sleeping beauty state and not even a kiss can wake you up. Because why are you even here?

So it's taking a minute to get to this because I was confused until I remembered I can't read and pull out my tts.

Ah, but anyway, I've never seen Re: Zero. I'm not a big Isekai person tbh. I did get into "So I'm a spider, so what!" But it lost me when that show went away from the spider to the kids. And I do need to what "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime" because Rimuru seems like the vibe and NB rep I need in my life.

ANY wAY.

There is my thing about how I think time works in genshin. (I have a feeling this is gonna be a lore theory post) It is one path. One big unchanging stream. Like. Wander and Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. They both still happen, and they still exist in the world. Time was not changed. Just the memory. Because the brain does this thing where it fills in gaps when you don't remember, and that's what Irminsul doesn't control time, just the memory of it. And when The Wander and Greater Lord Rukkhadevate erased their memories. The events still happened, and Irmisul just made up the spaces. Which is why there is still a sixth chair in the harbingers.

And it clearly still works on the Archon. So I think Venti would react much like Nahida did, with a sense of something missing. I Feel Kaeya would also have the same reaction because I think the Irmisul is good at filling in large missing gaps, but a small single person would be hard. So Kaeya would have memories that don't make sense unless someone else was there.

Do remember he is still a part of the world even as a Khaenrian, maybe even more so since he seems to be an uncursed Kharnrian (ie he can age).

But you know who besides the Traveler would remember?

Alice.

Alice is most likely another Descender. Given she knows about things from our world and knows Aloy or she at least has a special distance from the Irminsul.

And you know who she promised to treat as her own? Diluc. You can't tell me she wouldn't be upset and personally seek out the traveler to help her.

Anime Update V2 57

Vinland Saga S2 - At long last, I return to this series and jump right into Episode 1 of its second season that aired earlier this year. This episode told the tragic tale of a man named Einar, who lost his homeland, his mother, and his sister in a horrific attack by marauding brutes who took him prisoner and sold him into slavery. At one point he tries to flee only to get found, recaptured, and brutally beaten. At another point we see old man Leif, looking to find his lost nephew among the slaves. At the end, Einar is sold to Ketil to work at his large, vast farm in southern Denmark, where he is introduced to another of Ketil's slaves: a moody, badly damaged young man with dirty blond hair...named Thorfinn. And thus, a connection is made!

Hunter x Hunter - New information regarding how the Chimera Ants operate in their different heirachies and their ongoing breeding patterns is given to us as the Hunters Association is now tasked with fighting and killing the Ants, hoping to slay the Queen before she can give birth to a King. We also got some neat fights of Gon, Killua, and Kite in that order against Chimera Ant footsoldiers sent after them by the big lion guy. And on the side, Colt and the other leading soldiers are discovering the secrets of Nen, continuing to be easily the most intriguing part of the show at this point and I await more from them.

Fruits Basket - First episode of the pair I watched was mostly set at school, with the first half delving into Machi's backstory, how the trauma messed her up, and her blossoming relationship with Yuki, and...OK, which female student council member had the parody "tragic backstory?" Because Machi's backstory just did not click for me AT ALL. I could get the idea behind it and wanted to appreciate it but the execution was absurd; it legit felt like something someone would make up to convey how Fruits Basket does traumatic past-based stories, yet we're meant to take it seriously. I like Machi, but her development with the backstory and romantic material just sucked. Ironically, the second half that put focus onto Yuki's biggest fangirl, Motoko Minagawa, actually landed better and got me more emotional and choked up! Yuki, you took for granted what you had in this girl and her wacky fangirl posse! The one weird part was Naohito having feelings for Minagawa the whole time. THAT'S what he meant when he declared Yuki "his rival" when they first met? C'mon now!

The second episode brought Isuzu and Haru's subplot to its climax in a truly beautiful fashion, along with some payoff for Hiro and Kisa as well, and the best part of all was getting to see Haru grilling Akito for the truth, standing up to her, and coming just short of decking her in the face. Kureno helping Haru to go reunite with Isuzu and Akito starting to break down about this was icing on the cake. I might not be the biggest fan of Kureno but compred to Akito, Ren, Shigure and the head servant, he's a good lad who understands wrong and right.

Re:ZERO - Season 2 is a go for this too, as we're treated to a horrific Happy Ending Override where Rem has ended up vanishing from everyone but Subaru's memories again and a whole bunch of Crusch's soldiers got slaughtered by two new Archbishops of the Witch's Cult, a white haired Simon Laurent and a crazed beastman who talks like Erik Scott Kimerer doing Alexander Polinsky. For some reason, the effect went in reverse for Crusch, as now she's lost her memories of everyone else. The episode's last scene with Subaru and Emilia was nothing short of extraordinary for its pathos, it really got me. Things look to be taking a darker direction for this season, and y'know what? With a show of this quality, sign me the fuck up!

Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works - Now this was a lot more interesting compared to what I'd been watching before. Lots more serious and involved discussion between Shirou, Saber, Rin, and Archer, a scene where Shinji reports to Kirei at his church and he even references his grandfather Zouken, Rin and Shirou staking out to confirm or put to rest any suspicions regarding their bespectacled classmate who lives at the temple, Rin alluding to the true connection she has with Sakura, and Shirou thinking back to Kiritsugu and why he's adopted the "hero of justice" ideals from him to the point of a stubborn, unhealthy Savior Complex. Good stuff to see get adapted.

Symphogear GX - I thought Hibiki's father seemed bad, and Tsubasa's father also seemed cold and unloving, but now we get the full truth about her birth...her grandfather is thought to be her biological father who impregnated his own daughter in law just to breed a worthy family heir and spite his two sons. DEAR GOD. Seeing how fucked up this clan is, it was unsurprising to learn that Tsubasa's father was wanting to protect his girl from dealing with it all. What was very surprising was the full extent of Carol's plan, which turned every triumph the girls had made against her Dolls upside down into defeats that only got Carol closer to her objectives, and how she accomplished so much just by spying through Elfnein's eyes. The two biggest delights here were more of Chris bonding with Kirika and Shirabe as their senpai and working together to kick ass, and the glorious return of none other than DR. VER! Extra batshit as ever and still claiming himself to be a hero, he's with Carol and the Autoscorers now! Can this possibly get any wilder? I sure hope so!

Eureka Seven - On errands with Eureka and her kids, Renton meets a kind elderly lady who turns out to be a Vodarac religion member and a suspected terrorist who Holland is after in order to turn her in and collect the bounty on her. The morality of what Gekkostate is doing suddenly gets a lot blurrier to Renton, and he and Holland now clearly have more than a few issues with each other even in spite of Holland coming through in the end to ensure the old lady evades the military after he's taken his pay. Eureka is still awesome, though!

Gintama - So this might've been my absolute favorite episode of Gintama yet. Just all the ways they played with the "whodunnit" mystery genre while also lampooning stalkers, selfish, dishonest and unloving boyfriends, and tight parental control without the child's input all in one hilariously twisty and turny episode kept me immensely engrossed and entertained from start to finish. Also, Otsu continues to be surprisingly amazing, and we even get the backstory for why Shinpachi became such a die-hard fan of her, with the one thing that distracted me is that suddenly she's singing in Japanese even in this dub; did the constant English singing of "Your Father's Bleep Bleep" face such backlash that they dared not attempt a dubover of Otsu's songs again? Ah well, that's no big loss at all!

Hi,I've got interested in reading re:zero thanks to your posts, but I wanted to ask what is the order for reading it,since I've seen it has "alternative routes" and such

Omg hiii anon I'm on mobile rn so hopefully this will make sense!

The main route for re:zero is actually completely upfront about the order to read it in- you start from arc 1 and read it linearly from there. The alt routes are more like "canon aus"- they're called the what:if routes, and are titled stuff like pride:if, wrath:if etc.

If they each correspond to a specific arc, the main difference being a key point in which Subaru makes the wrong decision causing a huge deviation in the timeline. But I recommend waiting until at least arc 5 to actually read them (due to spoilers) and 6 for gluttony.

You don't necessarily have to read the what-if routes but they add a lot of different layers to the characters and lore so I do recommend it.

The order is: Pride:if (arc 1), Wrath:if (arc 2), Sloth:if (arc 3), Greed:if (arc 4), and Gluttony:If (arc 6)

There are also fully non canon aus like the school:if, genderbend, and butterfly dream, but those aren't really anything that important and you'd be fine skipping them. Actually I recommend skipping butterfly dream, it was intended as an april fools prank but even the writer felt like it was disrespectful to the woman of the story and took it down 💀

There's also the alternate routes in the lost in memories game but those are also skippable and mostly for fun.

But beyond the alt routes there's also a lot of side content. You can pretty much read this stuff at your leisure depending on what it is and where in the story you are

So yeah basically tldr there are a lot of apt routes but the main story is totally linear and you can read it all w/o any other routes either. Consider those all to be extra!
