Part of a World that Swings

Many months ago, I started a multi-part story here that I never got around to finishing. I always felt a little sad about that, so I kept it in my docs in the hopes that the spark would return to it.

It did.

Floyd Leech x OC adventure, featuring my gal Joker Carder on a trip beneath the waves. Contains a lot of fluffy feelings, some laughs, a musical number, and (warning!) a near-drowning.

I hope you all enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it! And to those who might actually recognize this from when it began, thank you for sticking around and seeing it through!

Joker couldn't see a thing. Her left hand was in the grip of Floyd's, and she was at his mercy as he guided her, hastily blindfolded, to their destination. The floors felt familiar underfoot, though; roughly carved blocks of stone, worn smoother by constant foot traffic, their footfalls muffled by the murmuring and movement of other students... they were somewhere within the campus's main hall. At least she could tell that much.

Finally, they stepped through a doorway. Her wrist was released, and she heard Floyd closing the door behind them. It was quiet in here, away from the other students. He took the necktie that he had been using as a blindfold off of Joker's eyes, and she blinked in the light. "Ta-daaaaaa!", Floyd sang, grinning in front of her.

"Why are we in the mirror chamber?"

"Becaaaaause, we have places to go today, Clownfish!" Floyd's voice was, as usual, colored with barely contained laughter. He started to pat the pockets of his uniform. "Soon as I find the thing..."

"The thing?" Joker tilted her head, curious. "I'm impressed, Slick. You've actually planned something for today, huh?"

"Yep!" He nodded. "A little trip for my little clownfish. And we gotta get you ready. Take off your shoes and your socks, okaaaaaay? And, um. Your." He froze for a moment, cheeks flushing slightly. He grinned. "Your you-knows. Under your skirt."

Joker shot him a look that would have killed a less shameless man. "Absolutely not."

"They'll get wrecked, then." Floyd shrugged, noncommittally, still searching his pockets.

She took a step back. "What exactly do you have planned??"

"Not what you think, haha! Ooh, I found it!" He withdrew his hand from the breast pocket of his uniform jacket, and unwrapped a small item from his handkerchief. "There we go. Can't leave without thiiiis! Now hurry up and lose the whatsits, okay? We're goin' underwater. I'm takin' you to see part of my world!"

"Is that a breathing potion?" Joker peered at the little vial in his hand. It was crystalline, shimmering, and inside there was a pearlescent, deep orange liquid. It was beautiful. "I don't see why I'd have to take off my—"

Floyd cut her off with a finger over her lips. "It's not. Well, it kind of is, but it's not. Thing is, you won't need 'em because you won't be able to wear em. Just trust meeeeeee, Joker!" His mismatched eyes met hers, and in that noment, she knew he was serious. Floyd only dropped the nicknames for folks he felt really close to, and she couldn't remember ever hearing him say her name before this.

She nodded. "Okay. But look away while I do it!" She stepped to the other side of the room, took off what was asked, and, red-faced, slipped everything into her school bag. She came back towards him, holding her skirt against her legs. "Okay... so, what next?"

Floyd stood next to the portal for the Coral Sea, as excited as she had ever seen him. "Okay! So. You take this little potion, pass through the portal, and THEN swallow it, got it? The order's important. Mouth, step, gulp."

"I think I can do that. What does it do?"

"You'll seeeee. I'll be right through behind you. Don't worry!!"

Joker took the vial from his hand. It was warm; warmer than the long-fingered hand she had taken it from, warmer than she would expect the smooth faceted glass to be. Floyd gave her an urging nod, and she emptied it into her mouth. It... huh. Usually these things taste like the worst thing you could imagine, but this potion only tasted faintly of tangerines and egg custard. She took a deep breath through her nose and stepped through the portal.

The shock of cold water on her skin almost caused her to open her mouth and cry out, but she remembered her instructions and swallowed the potion instead. It felt warm going down her throat, and made her tingle all over. She held her breath as long as she could, paddling her arms to stay in place by the portal, but the tingle in her legs increased. She found it harder to move them, and began to panic as she saw Floyd come through the portal, shifting from his everyday human form to his natural merman form.

Floyd came up to her immediately. "It's okay, it's okay!" He gently pulled Joker closer to his body, holding her by the shoulders. "This should only take a second or two longer. Try to breathe for me, okay?"

Joker nodded, and opened her mouth. She felt the water rush into her, and... oh. She was breathing! A stream of bubbles flowed from her mouth as the air left her body, replaced by the seawater. "But, I can't control my body, my legs...."

Floyd cupped her cheeks, and looked her up and down. He laughed. "What legs?? Clownfishie, it worked! You're a reeeeeal clownfishie now! And just as cute as I knew you'd be, awwwww!"

"Wha—?" Joker looked down. Poking out from beneath the skirt of her school uniform was a thick, chubby fish tail, with thick orange, black, and white stripes covering its scales. Her jaw dropped. "Slick?? Floyd?? What... I'm..." Her face slowly slid into a grin. "By the Seven!! I'm a mermaid! Like you! I— whoa." She moved her fins, trying to balance. "It'll take getting used to. How did you manage this?"

"Azul was workin' on these potions, based on some of the old sea witch's formulas, and since he owed me a favor, I picked one to try out today with ya. Ain't it great??" He smiled widely, showing all of his sharp teeth, and ran a webbed hand over her shoulder. "I know that swimmin' is gonna be hard at first, since you're not used to the movement. But hang onto me. I'll getcha around today. Ohhhhh, you look so cuuuuuute! I could eat ya right up!"

“Great. I finally get my magical day out with the cutest guy in school, my beloved, unhinged boyfriend, who I trust for some bizarre reason, and it turns out he’s a cannibal,” she quipped, and they both snickered. Joker gave her new tail a couple of experimental swishes, and did her best to look herself over. Movement was awkward like this, but she was able to twist herself enough to get a good enough look at herself. “I’m not as scaly as you; no little arm fins, either. And my ears…” She ran a hand over them. “Still the same. Is it just a partial change?”

Floyd waved a hand dismissively. “Not all merfolk are built the same. Morays like me n’ Jade have a couple different features from lil’ clownfish mermaids, and we’re all made different from the octo-types. Not all samey like you land people.” He absentmindedly booped her on the nose.

“I see.” She nodded. “You’re saving all the pretty for yourself, huh?” She laughed as he made a face at the comment, like he was trying to disprove it. It was almost comical, the way his long, elegant form contrasted with her chunky, brightly colored one, but it seemed such differences were the norm here. So that meant she wouldn’t stand out too much as an outsider.

“Stop it, Clownfishie. You know I won’t let anyone pick on ya, especially yourself.” He ruffled her hair, the curls blooming out around her in the water. “Look at yooooou. You look like you’ve always belonged here.”

Joker felt her cheeks start to heat up, and she tried her best to keep from blushing. She had to redirect the conversation. “So. Now that I’m part of your world, what are we gonna do in it?”

“As much as we can before sunset!” Floyd took both of Joker’s hands in his, and started to lead her along a warm current of water. “There’s the museum, some parks, a concert hall, shoppin’, all kinds of stuff! Where do you want to start?”

“Oh gosh. I don’t even know…” Joker tore her gaze away from Floyd briefly, trying to take in all the sights around them. It was so different from up on land, and more beautiful than she had imagined. A school of tiny silvery fish shimmered past them, weaving through an irregular outcropping of coral. Beyond, a patch of seaweed waved gently in a soft current, and the sunlight rippled around them. “Everything seems so new and exciting.” She turned her head back to him. “Why don’t you show me the things you like the most?”

Floyd puffed out his cheeks, looking thoughtful for a moment. “I dunnooooooo. A lotta stuff’s kinda boring to me, if I gotta be honest. You know how it is, Clownfishie. You grow up in a place, and no matter how cool it is to someone else, it’s just the same ol’ same ol’ that you’ve always known.”

“Well, what did you do for fun?”

“Pick on Tako-chan and throw rocks at crustaceans.”

Joker stifled a giggle. “I see, I see; only the best, then. Well, barring a trip to the ol’ rock-chucking grounds, hm…” She thought for a minute as they swam along, hands linked. “Okay. Why don’t you take me to someplace you haven’t been to in a while? Maybe you’ll find something interesting there you overlooked before.”

Floyd squeezed her hands, then pulled her in close as he thought. After a few moments, he perked up. “I have an idea nowwww. Lemme get us there.”

He started to swim rapidly along the current, keeping her tucked up against his body. Joker tried to move along with him, but the swimming motions felt unnatural in her transformed body, and she allowed Floyd to transport them both as she held on tightly to him. She always knew he was strong; between his easy movements on the basketball court, the way he could speedily disable any troublesome Mostro Lounge customers, even the way he held himself when he danced, it was all indicative of someone with an uncanny control of their body. But the way he moved through the water was like nothing she had experienced before, like he was a part of the ocean itself. Joker closed her eyes and tucked her head into the crook of Floyd's neck. It was a thrill just to be so close next to him as he swam, seemingly unaffected by any resistance her body might have provided.

“Hey, Slick? Do I get a hint as to where we’re going?”, Joker questioned after a few minutes of traveling. She had opened her eyes again, and the sea floor was still zipping along below them at a good turn of speed. She had been expecting at least to be able to see some merfolk homes as they passed, but it seemed as though Floyd was keeping outside of any populated areas.

Floyd looked down at her, mischief in his eyes. “I don’t wanna spoil the surprise. It’s gonna be good, I promise! We’re almost there. You hang tight, okay?” He faced forward again, and began to propel them forward even faster. Joker yelped and clung to his shoulders, which made him laugh. “I’m not gonna lose you, don’t worry!”

They wound through the currents together, and Floyd slowed his pace as they approached a space teeming with life. Even though they were deep underwater, some sunlight managed to stream down, illuminating the space. Tiny colorful fishes flickered back and forth between spikes of coral, which sprung forth from a familiar shape. “It’s an old sunken ship?”, Joker asked, wonder in her voice. She detached herself from Floyd’s grasp and approached the vessel, brushing aside some waving seaweed. “How long has it—”

“Dunno, Joker.” Floyd swam up to her, circling around her as she slowly approached the ship, his long tail brushing against her. “For as long as I can remember, at least. The coral growin’ out of it’s gotten bigger since I was a kid, but other’n that, it’s just like I remember it.” He tilts his head. “Maybe not as big as I remember, but I was kind of a lil’ squirt last time we were here, haha!”

“So you played here when you were a kid?” Joker reached out her hand towards him, and he took it, their fingers lacing together as well as his slightly webbed hand would allow. “It’s really amazing. Guess this might’ve sparked your interest in going onto land?”

“Maybe a liiiiiittle bit. Mostly tryin’ to find context for the stuff that was left behind by the collectors, n’ all.” He started to swim to the upper deck, and she followed along. “Used to be a good place for me n’ Jade to hide out, too. Lotsa kids were scared to go near this place.”

Joker paused. “Is it dangerous?”

“Naaaaaaah.” Floyd’s face split into a grin. “But everyone used to say it was haunted.”

Joker’s eyes got wide. “Haunted ships are real?? I mean, I’d heard stories, but I always thought they were just that; just stories.”

Floyd laughed. “Oh, they’re real all right! Me n’ Jade have seen our share of haunted battleships and pirate ships and all that. But this one’s a bougie passenger ship. I’ve seen ghosts, I know what ghosts are like, and there ain’t any ghosts down here! It’s just dark inside, is all. But we still got a couple hours of sunlight left, we’ll be a-ok.”

She chuckled, relaxing somewhat. “Don’t wanna be here after sunset, huh?”

“We gotta be back at the mirror by then. That’s when Azul said that potion’s gonna wear off. I’m pretty sure of it. I was kinda in a hurry to get to you once I had it, haha.”

Joker smiled at him, and squeezed his hand. “You really couldn’t wait, huh?”

“I never wait when I know somethin’ is gonna be good.” Floyd shrugged, squeezing back. “You gotta live for the moment, right? Waitin’ around just means that good stuff is gonna pass you by. I already told ya that when I asked you to be mine; you know that.”

“I do.” She didn’t know that it was possible to blush so hotly under the cool water. She shook her head, letting her hair obstruct her face while she took a moment to recover. He really could be charming, when the spirit moved him to be. “Well. In the spirit of not waiting, let’s head inside!”

“You got it!” Floyd guided Joker across the ship’s deck and through a pair of double doors, hanging open on their hinges. He released her hand once inside, and circled the room while her eyes adjusted to the relative dimness of the light inside. Her eyes tracked him as he skirted the perimeter, slowly taking in more details as her vision acclimatized itself.

The room was paneled in dark wood, and some pale curtains made from a sheer fabric hung by the windows, drifting in the slight current stirred up in Floyd’s wake. A glimmer caught her eye, and she looked up. A chandelier, bedecked in crystals, hung above their heads. She swam up to get a better look at it. “Was this some sort of party boat, or luxury line, or something? It’s really fancy. This looks like an entrance hall for a cruise ship…” Her voice trailed off a bit.

“It coulda been. I don’t really know the specifics, ya see.” Floyd finished his circuit of the room and swam upward to join her. “All I know, is when I was little, this buncha crystals, when the light hit it, was the prettiest thing I ever saw.”

“That can’t be right.” Joker gestured back towards the door. “Everything out there is breathtaking. This is glass and wires; it’s cool, but not the prettiest.”

“I know that NOW. Duuuuh.” Floyd playfully tapped Joker’s head with his knuckles. “But there’s something even nicer we found later. If it’s still here? I can show you somethin’ even prettier inside this ship.” He started to swim downwards, beckoning her to follow. “C’mon. We have a lot of ship to check out, and not a whole shipload of time to do it.”

“Floooooyd. That’s awful.” Joker groaned as she clumsily swam after him, her fins finally getting accustomed to propelling her. “Great job on punning but also nooooo.” He only laughed in reply, and she just shook her head as they descended below deck together.

The way down to the lower deck was a gleaming brass staircase that skimmed the outer walls in a lazy spiral. Joker took Floyd by the elbow as they swam down, tails barely skimming above the surface of the stairs. The room was darker than above, illuminated mostly by light coming in through damaged areas of the upper deck, shining down like solid bands of shimmering brilliance. Joker was overwhelmed by the scale of it; the ship was the height of luxury once upon a time, and even damaged and sunken, it was tremendously beautiful. The walls were dotted with intricate metal and crystal sconces, and Joker could only imagine how the place would have looked at the peak of its glory.

She finished looking around and swung her gaze back towards Floyd. He was looking at her with a goofy grin on his face.

“What is it, Slick? Something stuck in my hair?”

He shook his head, not looking away. “Nah. I’m just likin’ watching you. You’re having fun.”

“Are you?” She nudged her shoulder against his.

“Wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t.” He released her hand and put an arm around her shoulders again. “C’mon. It’s up ahead. Through the door.”

Joker let herself be drawn closer to him; close enough that his finned ear tickled her cheek. The door he mentioned was right ahead. A huge double door, with intricate carvings in the worn wood, it still bore traces of gilded paint despite the years spent beneath the sea. Floyd reached out his free hand and gently pushed against it. The door moved slowly, leaving particles of glittering gilt paint and rotting wood swirling behind it in its wake.

Joker peered in through the opening. A large part of the upper deck had broken away, allowing the light to flood into the space, shimmering over dark tiled floors and shattered debris. She and Floyd entered slowly, hand in hand, taking it all in. It was an enormous room compared to the rest of the ship - a grand ballroom, with a large stage at the far end. There were more crystal-adorned lights in here, and although they hung at crazy angles from the ruined ceiling, the sunlight filtering down through them made the whole room sparkle. And even the places that sunlight didn’t reach had their own charm; they played host to bits of bioluminescent algae, which gave those areas a mysterious blue-green glow.

Joker released his hand and swam forward, mouth agape, just taking it all in. She finally made a high-pitched, happy squeak, and whirled back towards Floyd excitedly, the dappled light playing across her. “This is amazing! Could you imagine the events that happened in this room? Enormous parties, formal dances, grand performances… it gives me the shivers just thinking about it.”

“This ain’t even the best part of it. But while we’re here, you wanna give this ol’ ballroom one more dance?”

She clapped her hands together, beaming. “Would I!”

Floyd looked momentarily confused, and held out a hand to beckon towards her. “... would you?”

Joker giggled. “Yes, Slick. I would.” She glided back towards him, spinning into his arms. “Shame we don’t have any music, though.”

“Since when do we need that?” he scoffed. “Just follow your natural rhythm. Imagine there’s a little ensemble… yeah.” He tightened his grip on her, and started to tap a simple beat onto her shoulder. “All right, let’s dance!”

Laughing, the two of them began to whirl above the dancefloor, keeping well away the debris below them. Even to his simple tap, their rhythms synched up readily, as they usually did. But there was a whisper of melody coming from her dance partner. Joker looked up into Floyd’s eyes, brilliant in the sparkling light. “You’re humming something, mister.”

“I figured out what we’re dancing to, is all.” He shrugged one shoulder as he raised her arm over her head, spinning her around.

She switched directions, and let him dip her over his arm. “Gonna share with the class?”

He lowered his face to touch his nose to hers. “Uhhhhhhhhh, no. But I’ll sing for you.” They both straightened up, face to face, and fell into a steady eight-beat.

And sleepy and yawning,

Still the taste of wine.

Then I remember you’re mine,

And I’ve got a world that’s fine.

Floyd started singing one of the standards that the guys played at Mostro in the evenings; Joker had heard it a few times while she had visited him there, but it had never sounded so bright and brilliant before, even a capella. He kept singing, a smile lighting up his eyes.

What’s before me?

Routines that bore me!

Punch the clock at eight.

But what a lucky guy I am!

I’ve got a world that’s great.

As they spun around together, it was all too easy to imagine how lively this ballroom had been in its heyday. Joker could picture the room filled with beautiful people in evening dress, light on their feet as they danced the night away. But none of the imagined dancers were as remarkable to her as the long, lovely eel serenading her in the afternoon light. They came to a stop in front of the ballroom stage, and Floyd beckoned her to come closer and look. Like the rest of the ship, it had suffered a lot of damage between its descent to the sea floor and the subsequent picking over by explorers, but it was still impressive. It had a wide wooden floor, with dark planks laid out in an intricate and subtle pattern. The sides were lined with pillars, interspersed with the remnants of thick, sparkling curtains.

And fully intact, descending over the performance space, was a massive wood carving of a woman, arms outstretched to flank the wings of the stage. Floyd patted Joker on the shoulder. “Check this out,” he whispered. There was some superficial damage to the carving that became more evident as they drew closer; some places where kids had carved initials into it, a few clumps of barnacles, and some spots where the paint had been worn away. Joker was even able to find a spot with a crudely carved FLOD, which made her smile. But, untouched above all the minor vandalism, the carved woman’s face wore a peaceful smile, and her long hair tumbled down over her shoulders in a cascade of dark waves.

“This is amazing. Is this what you wanted me to see?” Joker whispered, awed.

He released her hand, and started to swim slow, lazy circles around her. “For a looooong time,” Floyd began, “I used to think that if I went up on land, this was what the women would look like.” He snickered. “Ten feet tall, at least, with rock-solid arms and the ability to defy gravity.” He reached out, tracing a finger along her jaw. “... and beautiful.”

Joker swallowed. “I guess it sucked to be wrong about them, huh?”

“I dunno.” He drew himself closer to her, letting his tail coil gently around her body. “I got one part right, hehehe.”

Joker tried to smirk, and she patted her own bicep, making her upper arm wobble slightly. “These guns, huh,” she joked weakly.

Floyd shook his head. He was so close to her face, she could see the soft transition of skin to scale along his throat, and the way his hair glistened in the soft, filtered light. “Sooooooo close. Try it again, my Clownfish.”

He ran his fingers through her hair, little claws grazing her scalp. She shivered. “Then….”

“You’re gonna make me saaaaaay it, huh?” He chuckled, his voice low and teasing. “Joker. You are beautiful.” She found her arms wound around him of their own accord, and they pressed against each other. And under the joyful gaze of the carved woman, Floyd met his lips to hers.

Joker’s heart swelled. Her body felt warm all over, and if she might have been learning some grace in the borrowed mermaid body, it all flew away as she came undone in his arms. Sure, they may have kissed each other before, but there was something very different about it this time. Almost as if it was changing her. She held herself close to him as her body tingled, and she felt like it was becoming harder to breathe.

Floyd pulled away briefly, and gave her a rare, unguardedly sweet smile, which quickly melted into a horrified look. “Oh, no. No, no no no no. It’s not sunset yet. This is wrong. This can’t be happening!”

Joker tried desperately to gasp for breath, but her body was rapidly changing back into its normal human form. The last thing she remembered before things went dark was Floyd grabbing her tightly and starting to swim at top speed.

“Hold on, Joker. I’m gonna get you outta here.”

Floyd practically flew through the water, holding Joker close to his chest. He couldn’t afford to waste any time; she needed air, and they were far enough down that he knew they couldn’t get to the surface on time. He needed to get her back to the mirror. He skipped all the little detours and scenic loops that he has brought her down on the way to the sunken ship, and pushed himself to his full speed. Within minutes, he was back to where they had started. He only hoped that it had been fast enough as he dragged her back through the portal.

The two of them burst through the surface of the magic mirror, Floyd transforming to his human form in midair before his bare feet hit the ground. The transition from water to air was always a little uncomfortable, and water flowed from his mouth and nostrils as he coughed, holding her to his chest. Joker hung limply, her clothes and hair dripping onto the floor. Floyd shuddered, but regained his bearings easily. He was used to this. But Joker…

Floyd looked down at Joker, still cradled in his arms. Her eyes were closed, as if she were sleeping, but her chest wasn’t moving. Her skin had gone pale. She hadn’t started breathing yet.

No.

He would not stand for this. Not after he took her to one of his special places, one that only he and his brother had shared. He could still feel her heart beating, slowly but steadily, deep inside of her. He had to do something. He must have been forced to read something about this sometime, he just needed to remember.

The memories kicked into place. He gently placed her down onto the floor, turning her head to the side and smoothing her clothes down over her. Humans were funny about that modesty thing, he knew. He put his hands together and placed them into the center of her chest, and began pressing down in a steady rhythm. If he could force the water out, maybe she could start breathing again. He watched her face as he worked, watching for a change. Come on. Come on.

After a few seconds that took an eternity to pass, Floyd finally saw an effect. Joker’s eyebrows furrowed, and he felt her body shudder. She tried to inhale, choked, and began coughing. Floyd almost cheered out loud as he rolled her onto her side, angling her so that she could eject the water from her lungs. He knelt beside her, patting her back and smoothing down her hair until her breathing quieted and became nearly normal again. Then he gathered her into his arms.

“... I forgot about the catch in the potion.” He sounded miserable. “I should have remembered the story of the mermaid princess. Her potion was supposed to have her stay a human after she got a kiss. I just… psssssh.” He mimed something flying over his head. “Completely missed that, apparently.”

Joker coughed, and leaned against his chest. “You got carried away,” she said, weakly. “Me too.” She coughed again, and groaned. “We’re….?”

“Mirror chamber. Back at NRC. I’m gonna get you to the infirmary, clownfishie.” He paused, and laughed. “Usually, when I put people in there, it’s a real different kinda squeeze! Hehehe.”

Joker smiled weakly, her eyes just barely open. She reached an arm up around his neck, and gave him a tiny hug. “But thanks anyway, Slick. That… that was amazing.”

Floyd focused for a moment, then straightened out to stand. “Once they gotcha settled in, I’ll come back for our stuff, okay?” Joker nodded in reply, not even opening her eyes as she curled up against his chest.

And then, her eyes flew open.

“Floyd?”

“Yeaaaaah?”

“You, um. Started to help me right away. Soon as you got back, right?”

"Riiiiiight."

“And you didn’t stop to do anything else?”

“Nothing at all.”

“So, that means…. your clothes, Floyd. What are you wearing?”

“Nothing at all,” he repeated, and he started to crack up as Joker’s face went red as a beet. “I know my priorities.” And with that, he started to carry her out of the room, laughing.

The clouds below rumbled and threatened rain upon the valley. She could feel it around her, the dropping pressure as the warm front pushed through, and the inevitable fall of water dropplets coating the vegetation.

Maya, in her dozing off, focused on every single one. They trickled down and bounced, some colliding with each other and some shattering into mist and cycling back up into the clouds.

It was a shame that it never rained on the monastery, what advantages would she have during training if it did, but then again the fire EMs powers would surely be dampened.

Speaking of, her mind wandered back to his odd behavor that day. During training he had excused himself claiming to be sick, in which Wu allowed, and the he didn't show up for lunch or dinner or even chores. Ray didn't allow her into his room despite how close she felt that had become as of late, which was even more odd.

Did she say something to him and made him upset? Maya made note to speak to him about it in the morning.

Falling deeper into sleep, her mind's consiousness slipped into lucidity. The dream before her she had many times before: a blue lit cave with strange markings that coiled around led her down to a gated opening. Within laid an unfathomably large serpent, its horns jutting like jagged yellow coral from its dark scaley head. Its eyes, however open, peered lifelessly towards her.

In her hand she held a stone that shimmered blue, the shape ever shifting between her fingers. Somehow she knew it belonged to the sleeping beast, and although she knew it wrong to return the stone, she felt as though it was calling for her.

Just as the thought to break in came to her, Maya felt the hairs on her neck stand up. Something was watching her, something large and unknown that loomed with an intent to attack.

Maya snapped awake fast enough to see a serpents tail twist its way into the shadowed rafters.

A serpentine, here? Wu had said anacondrai could turn invisible and despite their size, were very sneaky. If one had snuck out here and managed to get past everyone, that meant that it surely has had enough time to collect information and was on the move to get out.

"Oh no you don't," She spat and sprung up into the rafters.

The quiet nimble motions of the intruder became loud and scrambled as she skipped closer, its tail flicking around wildly as it attempted to throw her off. It dived between a beam and the roof, squirming as it squeezed its way into a small storage area.

Although being unable to see in the dark, she heared it and dropped down into the room just outside of it. Maya smirked triumphantly, knowing well that the room beyond the door was a dead end, albeit pitch black. "You're pretty dumb for a serpentine," she taunted, lighting a lamp and taking one of the sparring rods off the wall.

Confident in her combat abilities, she batted away the thought of getting backup and slid the door open. Many scrolls and boxes laid in piles amongst overflowing shelves, the yellowed paper flickering with the fire in the lamp. Maya eased her way in, eyes scanning the room as she went. This serpent could be anywhere, could be any colour, but any movement it had she was confident that the sheer amout of paper would give away its position immediately.

And then, as the lamp's glow met the far wall, she saw it: a red scaley form sat upon a crate, its body curled around in a tight ball with its hands childishly around its face as if it would help it further hide. From between its claws, a fearful eye peaked out and stared at her.

If this was a serpentine, she reasoned, it surely was an ugly one. Especially wearing such a red gi that seemed stretched and unfitting, yet somehow familiar... Maya took a step closer, eyeing over its form once more and lowering the lantern. "You're not a serpentine... you're... Ray?" She asked almost not believing her own words.

Any doubt left her mind when he squeaked out his awkward laugh and smiled his goofy smile. His hands fell to his lap and idly squeezed at the ruined fabric, "you caught me, surprise." Ray fidgeted.

"Ray what happened to you? Is this why you disappeared all day? We need to tell Wu right away, I'm sure he can undo this-" Maya turned to do so as she talked, only to spin around and approach him again. This time, in a much lower voice she asked, "Was it the fangpyre general?"

He blinked, unsure of what she meant, "N-no? Maya this isn't serpentine related, its, I'm-I'm not fully human." Well that's an odd way to put it.

"Then what are you?" Her voice became harder, "and why were you watching me sleep?"

"Well, I maybe kind of sort of am part dragon..." he squeaked, "and I-I can explain the second one! I was going to tell you about this but then- well you looked so peaceful I didn't want to wake you up. But then you looked at me like you wanted to kill me so I got scared and ran." Ray smiled.

Maya squinted, not buying it for a second, "does Wu know?"

"No. I rather him not know... Maybe he already does... I don't know."

"Can you change back?"

"Uhh, well, no. I'm stuck sort of."

If it was a secret enough to cause him to be in hiding all day, that certainly didn't bode well for tomorrow. "How did you end up like this in the first place, maybe we can reverse walk through this." She set the lamp down and sat on a box across from him, leaning the rod against a shelf.

Ray thought about it, "I dunno. We were all sparring in the morning and then I guess I just started thinking about how to really channel my element you know? Then I started thinking about the war and what we're fighting for and I just got so worked up about it that I felt -I dunno- sick. And thats when this happened." He flicked his tail. "My dad told me a story once, about how a dragon in our family went rogue and forced a drought that wiped out villages. What if I do the same thing?? What if I lose control when we go to fight and I hurt you?"

Maya tapped her fingers on the wood, "do you feel yourself slipping away?"

"No... but what if people think I am?"

"I think you're overthinking this."

"But what if-"

"Ray," she stopped him, "So you're part dragon and you had some bad family history. That doesn't mean anything until you prove it to mean something. My mom told me when I was a little kid that all of the great feats in my bloodline mean nothing to me unless I make them meaningful, and unless you actually want to go and make farmers mad, I don't think you'll do it." She crossed a leg over the other, "You may look differen't, but you're still the dorkishly annoying blacksmith I care about."

He looked away, "you don't think the others would be scared of me if I looked like this?"

"well... no I think they would be, which is why we should tell Wu."

"I don't want anyone else to know about this." Ray muttered.

"Then we'll make him promise not to say." Maya nodded, picking up her things. "Ill be back with him shortly."))
