If you’ve gotten a free flu shot, mammogram or diabetes screening lately, there’s a good chance you can thank the Affordable Care Act (ACA), aka Obamacare. Unfortunately, a recent court decision may take that coverage away from millions of Americans.

Some 20–40 percent of U.S. deaths from cancer, heart disease and other leading causes of mortality are preventable. Preventive health services can ward off disease entirely, or detect a condition early when interventions are most effective. Before the ACA passed in 2010, insurance companies didn’t always cover preventive services, and, if they did, they could make enrollees pay deductibles, co-payments or other out-of-pocket cost sharing. So Congress required most private health insurance plans to cover a set recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and several other expert bodies. Most Americans with private health insurance—estimated at over 150 million people—are enrolled in plans that have had to meet these coverage requirements. And as the ACA’s drafters had hoped, expanding no-cost coverage led millions more people to use many of these important services.

Unfortunately, two ongoing crusades—one to weaken the ACA and the other to impose certain religious views on other people’s health care—might roll back this health care success. In late March, federal judge Reed O’Connor, whose courtroom is a popular venue for anti-Obamacare plaintiffs, issued a ruling in Braidwood v. Becerra that blocked a portion of the act’s prevention services provision nationwide.

O’Connor’s order, if upheld, will have antiscientific and deeply discriminatory effects on Americans’ access to health care.

The legal arguments in Kelley v. Becerra aren’t exactly good arguments, but five justices have signaled that they agree with them.

"Kelley v. Becerra is the fourth round of litigation attacking major provisions of the Affordable Care Act. It seeks to take out several provisions of Obamacare governing which forms of preventive care — things like birth control or vaccinations or cancer screenings — must be covered by health insurers. And it primarily relies on the kind of legal arguments that fell out of vogue in the federal courts more than 80 years ago.

But there’s a twist. Though the primary legal argument in Kelley is tough to square with existing legal precedents, five members of the Supreme Court recently signaled that they intend to abandon longstanding legal principles in favor of the same interpretation of the Constitution proposed by the Kelley plaintiffs. The plaintiffs in Kelley are an array of religious conservatives, and what Judge O’Connor labels as “Free-Market Plaintiffs,” who wish to purchase health plans that do not cover some of the preventive services that insurers are currently required to cover." (...)

SPAR South Africa unlucky to lose final Psi Exhibition Match

The final game of the Psi Exhibition series was played in front of another capacity crowd at UCT Sports Centre. SPAR South Africa were using the series to prepare for their upcoming test series against world number 5 Czech Republic and world number 7 Switzerland. For the coaching staff featuring Lennie Botha, Robyn Morgan, Brighty Mashaba and AJ Spieringshoek, they will be largely satisfied with the progress the team has made in a thrilling series.

The match started with a bit of a scary incident as Tegan Fourie took a bad knock to the eye and the game was stopped for a few minutes for her to receive treatment. Fourie was taken to hospital for a scan but received the all clear to travel to Europe. That scare seemed to set a bit of a surreal environment at the arena, but the game sprung to life just before half-time when Lena Lindstrom finished a team move to give the All-Stars the lead.

SPAR South Africa surged forward though and got the goal through a superbly worked penalty corner as Cindy Hack set up Kelly Reed for the finish. It was a goal that was fully deserving and a half-time score of 1-1 was a fair score line based on the match seen so far.

The second half followed the same tactical route with both teams reducing opportunities and space to a minimum. When called upon Alexander Heerbaart and Cheree Greyvenstein were in superb form to keep the scores level. The All-Stars finally took the lead with a trademark powerful flick from Marlena Rybacha.

SPAR South Africa once again surged forward and thought they had levelled as an infringement in their D was allowed to play on and then they went up the other end and Kelly Reed scored past on onrushing Heerbaart. The decision left the crowd disappointed as a short corner was awarded to the International All-Stars and Rybacha smashed it home. 3-1 the final score.

After the game Jessica O’Connor the vice-captain of SPAR South Africa was full of praise for Pro Series Indoor and the teams development:

“It is unbelievable what Pro Series Indoor is doing for the country and for the development of the game of indoor hockey. We hadn’t played together as a team too much when we got here, and we quickly learnt to fight for each other and grow as a team. I am excited for the tour to Europe in January. We are a team that plays with full hearts and that’s what really matters!”

Facebook is shooting for a big year in live sports, making its mark on the fragmenting sports streaming industry.

Through a new partnership with Univision, Facebook will stream 46 games from Mexico’s top soccer league Liga MX to the network’s U.S. users, the companies announced Monday.

That’s just one sport and one league, but it’s a big deal for Facebook and it could be bad news for Twitter, Amazon and other streaming platforms. Facebook, approaching 2 billion monthly active users and on a quest to be the new TV, offers massive reach for videos.

Soccer is the most followed (via users liking Facebook Pages) sport on the platform, and it paves the way for more sports games to be broadcast. Live sports has been one of the most difficult industries for rights since the leagues have longstanding deals with television networks.

“Now Facebook represents the next wave of TV.”

“Now Facebook represents the next wave of TV and, given its scale, they are an ideal partner to distribute our Liga MX matches in English,” said Tonia OConnor, chief commercial officer and president of content distribution at Univision, in a statement.

For Univision, the deal allows the network to potentially reach new, younger audiences as well as experiment with social and mobile streaming and perhaps a new source of revenue. The stream will be available in English.

The games, which start Sunday and run through playoffs, will not feature ads at first. Facebook is currently experimenting with short ad breaks within live videos, where Facebook and its partners share the revenue. Terms of the deal with Univision were not disclosed.

Sports are inherently social, with the power to build and connect communities around the world. This aligns closely with our mission, and we feel Facebook is a natural home for sports content, including live games,” Dan Reed, Facebook’s head of global sports partnerships, said in a statement.

“We plan to bring fans more live games from a variety of sports in the Video tab, and will collaborate closely with our partners to do so in a way that supports their business goals,” Reed continued.

The game will be available in Facebook’s video tab to all users in the U.S. from the Facebook Page of Univision Deportes.

Facebook already has had some success with live sports games. More than 3.7 million people watched Wayne Rooney’s testimonial match between Manchester United and Everton while it was live. This summer, Facebook streamed nine U.S. basketball exhibition games. Facebook also has streamed smaller sports like table tennis and net ball.

Not every sports partnership for Facebook has made the biggest splash. Facebook released Sports Stadium, a live hub for sports content and score updates, with the Super Bowl in 2016. It chose not to do much with the feature this year. Live scores are still available on the app.

The latest deal intensifies the competition between Facebook and Twitter. Following two years of stagnation in user growth and little movement in revenue, Twitter has been reinventing itself by locking down live video partnerships, many of which are exclusive.

Twitter made its grand entrance into premium live video by scoring the rights to 10 of the National Football League’s Thursday night games, where it was up against Facebook and Amazon.

Twitter has since inked deals with the National Basketball Association for two original shows, the National Hockey League for weekly games, Major League Baseball for weekly games beginning this summer and the PGA Tour. Twitter also streams college sports with Campus Insider and Pac-12 networks and has streamed the Melbourne Cup (a horse race in Australia).

Facebook’s deal with Univision is not exclusive, however, and could mean other networks are vying for a similar deal. Twitter declined to comment. Meanwhile, Twitter continues to be a place for sports conversations especially from the leagues and players themselves.
