Getting diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and doing the bare minimum required to not go into a ketonic coma or lose a foot doesn’t make me “brave.” It doesn’t make me “a warrior.” I want to punch a wall whenever anyone says that shit to me.

The other day I reblogged a post about waitstaff not respecting dietary requirements, and I didn't want to add to it because it's long enough already, but it got me thinking about disability and how it changes how you relate to the world.
I have a few health conditions. One of them is a potentially life-threatening food allergy (I carry an epipen and keep a spare one at home). This allergen is in a lot of foods, but it's thankfully relatively easy to avoid, particularly because I know the kinds of foods it's in, and also because it's an allergy that people generally respect.
This allergy has a minimal effect on my day-to-day life. My other health conditions have a much larger impact on my lifestyle. But my allergy has nonetheless shaped the way that I relate to food and my body. I always think about it when people suggest places to eat. I avoid foods that I've had close calls with in the past, or foods that sometimes contain the allergen. I'm wary of homemade food at potlucks and as gifts. I read the ingredients on everything, not only food but also things like toothpaste and soap, even when I know that there's basically no chance of my allergen being present. If I eat something risky then for the next twenty minutes I'm constantly checking my arms for hives and my lips for swelling.
There's something very strange about the idea that my body considers this food to be such a threat that it enacts a policy of mutually assured destruction. An assassin could kill me with something that is harmless to most other people. Every time I eat something new I'm scared that my body will decide it's a threat too.
Not everyone is as cautious as I am. But this sort of experience, and constant fear of your body turning on itself, applies to so many people. I have a friend who's severely allergic to nuts, dairy, legumes, and eggs. She rarely eats at restaurants and could never go vegetarian because she would struggle to get enough protein. Coeliacs and diabetics have to be constantly careful of what they're eating or risk permanent damage to their bodies. People with severe intolerances, or food-triggered migraines, or heart conditions impacted by caffeine, or any of the other food-related health conditions have similar experiences.
So much of life is centred around food (for good reason - I love food!), and yet so many people who don't have food-related health conditions just don't understand it, and sometimes even those who do their best don't always get it right. I check the ingredients on everything, even if a friend tells me that it's safe, because sometimes they're wrong. An honest mistake, but one that I can't afford.
I don't know where I'm going with this. I guess I just wanted to say that, if I discover that someone I know is blasé about food allergies, I don't bother talking with them about my other health conditions. If they can't even respect life-threatening food allergies then how could I possibly trust them with anything else? They haven't made the effort to understand how disabilities can completely shape the way that you experience the world. They wouldn't understand the concept of having limited spoons or executive dysfunction. They probably don't respect religious dietary requirements either, or sensory issues with food. I wouldn't trust them to understand microaggressions, or structural racism, or the complexities of gender, unless they happen to experience those themselves.
It's like the 'I don't know how to tell you that you should care about other people' meme, but instead, it's 'I don't know how to tell you that you should put yourself in someone else's shoes every once in a while'. Maybe that would make the world a better place.

So I just learned that gothic literature is basically about dark topics like abuse, violence, murder, bad mental and emotional problems
Is it just me or gothic literature is literally a definitive on my taste in fiction? Technically one of the first dark fictional works I'm still crazy about is a piece of gothic literature, it discusses almost every dark topic while having visual and symbolic themes I like
Sure I want a heartfelt story, it's cute
But I mostly watch/read heavy stuff cuz well if it's too sweet, I get diabetes, which is ironic cuz I have a big sweet tooth!

Gothic literature and tropes associated with it are deeply fascinating. A tendency I adore is how ‘blurry’ the world’s boundaries can be. It’s deeply dreamlike in a sense, it’s as if one is at a crossroad of experience in such stories. The crossroads of nature, ingenuity, mortality, morality, realms, eras, human relationships, normality, ethics. It’s as if you are gazing into the uncertain abyss and it flutters it’s eyelashes at you.
There is something so…applicable about gothic themes today. In a sense we live at a crossroads. AI is becoming more and more advanced, creating fears around privacy, theft and such while coming across as more human every day. Teachers in schools are suddenly having to crack down on the use of AI to complete assignments (from what I’ve heard). Corpos become more and more outwardly audacious about their mentality of “number go up weee” as people find it harder and harder to make ends meet, making many question their true intentions (all while the corpos post quirky memes on Xshitter about how ‘relatable’ they are, adding to that weird liminal feeling of ambiguity).
We suddenly know more than ever about ourselves, yet the uncertain abyss embraces us on the regular. We are constantly stimulated from all directions, but it can feel like the cold chill of nothingness as we stand on the precipice of…something.
(IMHO the best solution to this feeling I can think of is to hold your loved ones close. Our hyperindividualist society will have us think we should be all alone to flounder around, but that is not the case. Sorry small tangent.)
Writing this I just remembered the concept of hyperreality.
“Hyperreality is seen as a condition in which, because of the compression of perceptions of reality in culture and media, what is generally regarded as real and what is understood as fiction are seamlessly blended together in experiences so that there is no longer any clear distinction between where one ends and the other begins.”
Sound familiar? :3
Anyways that familiar feeling encountered in gothic works is something I’m adore to bits. It feels homey tbqh.
So yes dark themes for life! I love questioning everything and being moderately to severely horrified while doing so!!

I’m J and this is my weight loss blog. Obvious trigger warnings for frank discussion of weight, food, calories, and exercise in the context of weight loss. If you’re struggling with ED, probably not a healthy blog to be on.
I’ve been fat for most of my life and I’m exhausted of it. My hope is to develop life-long good habits that improve my health and well-being as well as decrease my clothing size.
The benefits are several:
1) Eating better and exercising is good for every body, mine included, and eating things that are good for me while maintaining an active lifestyle will ensure that I can keep being active for a long time, weight loss or no.
2) My family is prone to heart disease and diabetes, which can both be exacerbated by obesity, so even if I can’t avoid the conditions all together, I’d like to keep from increasing my chances of complications.
3) The specific way that I carry my weight exacerbates my gender dysphoria to dangerous levels and weight loss will likely improve that immensely. Weight loss will also potentially end in more visually pleasant results from reconstructive surgeries related to my transition.
4) I will be able to achieve body aesthetics my brain is looking for. This is the least important reason for losing weight, because beauty standards are bullshit etc etc, but it’s still a motivator.
Current weight as of writing is 213lbs and some change. This is already lower than it was last year. But I can do better. The idea is effectively to get to a weight somewhere under 150lbs in the next year to year and a half. I don’t think I’ve weighed that much since I was 14, so it’s a bit of a stretch, but with the right mindset it can be done. I mean 135 would be an AWESOME but I would be happy just being in a BMI range considered relatively healthy, so. We’ll include 135 on the list even though idk if I’m that concerned with actually getting there.
I’ll make notes here whenever I reach a goal weight, and I may give myself a little reward for every goal met just to keep morale up.

Interest Check: I would love to have some sort of fan event for the upcoming Diabetes Awareness Month in November.
I'm thinking of doing some sort of prompt meme or general fest type thing. I want it low stress, low commitment, you can make whatever you want so long as there's t1d in it somewhere. Fic, art, gifs, anything goes. Any fandom welcome except RPF. Pretty much exactly like what usually goes here, except in a fest format.
I think it would be a good idea to offer some sort of prompts, like lows/highs, tech, diagnosis, whatever.
I have no issues with people doing their own thing either or heck just updating WIPs, but working in a prompt format or making a prompt meme (where people can give specific prompts and writers/artists pick and choose) can be really fun and bring a bit of cohesion to it while displaying the different ways people experience and create things. And ofc it helps offer motivation/inspiration.
So I guess if there's anything specific you want to see with a t1d specific fan event, shoot me an ask or a DM or reblog and let me know. Whether you're interested, what would make things easier for a larger variety of formats (gifs, art, podfics), or anything you want prompted.
I mean. There's a lot involved with this disease, and so many different ways to live with it and have to experience it and. I think this could be a great way to offer new content with t1d but also work with awareness month.
So yeah. Rambling a bit but please please please let me know what you folks would be interested in. Even if you don't plan to create anything yourself but there's something you want to see. Let's hear it.

If you like DC or graphic novels and are looking for original fantasy/sci-fi stories with canonical t1d rep, I cannot recommend Swamp Thing: Twin Branches enough.
It’s a quick, fun retelling of DC’s Swamp Thing (as you may have guessed 😝). It’s basically the prequel/origin story.
And the main character has type 1 diabetes.

Purple Hearts gave us a character who happens to have type 1 diabetes. It's important to the story, but it's not a big dramatic thing. It's just there in the background.

How to Find Fanfics with Type 1 Diabetes in Fandom
A Comprehensive Guide to Navigating the AO3 Collection
Hello again, friends and folks!
I've realized some of the blog’s followers haven’t visited the collection of fanfics with t1d rep over on the Archive of Our Own (currently with 250+ fics across 100+ fandoms. seriously go check it out). It has also been brought to my attention that quite a few people are confused about either how to use the Archive or how to filter and search within a collection. I’m thinking the two are probably connected, so consider this my first attempt at a guide on how to easily do things.
Basically, imagine a little diabetic gremlin hovering over your shoulder and offering advice as you browse the collection. That gremlin is me. You’re welcome.
The primary goal of the collection (and this blog) is to provide easier access to fanworks featuring type 1 diabetes. That means:
NO incorrectly-tagged fluff fics butting in on #actuallydiabetic works
NO t2d fics (they have their own collection)
Diabetic characters that are written as diabetic and not simply tagged as such
Comprehensive tagging
Any fiction-based fandom, any trope, any rating
Every. Single. Fic must feature t1d in some way
You just have to know how to use the tools available to you.
Other people have created several helpful guides on how to use ao3 in a more generalized way, so I’m going to provide links for those and then we’ll get into the nitty gritty of AO3 collections and my personal organizational system.

I just had to post this, I had to for myself and my Rhink lovin' Peeps.
Anyway, this meme post comes from r/goodmythicalmorning by Sissinou. I wanted to make sure that they get the credit they deserve for at least posting it. I'm not completely sure if they created the meme, but just in case they did I credited it for the creativity of the meme itself.
It is a brilliant as hell meme and very fucking hilarious in it's undeniable truth!
This one of the many things that shows how freakin' awesome my boyfriend is.
He sent this to me from the reddit app on Facebook messenger yesterday. He sends me things like this from reddit all the time. Sometimes, it is cute as hell kitty and doggy pics and or videos and sometimes it is stuff that fuels my obsession with my fandom ships like this for instance. He mostly sends me these while I am working to make me smile and or laugh because of how annoying and taxing my job can be. Just like he sends me things that I enjoy, I also send him things from Tumblr as well that I think he would love and or laugh at. Anywho, this is a ship that started because of him introducing me to GMM. In fact, he pretty much said to me that you are going to love this show so much because of the hosts and you are going to ship them big time! As you can see here, that turned out being true. I had a feeling that would be true because that is how he convinced me to watch Supernatural other than mentioning the show featuring monsters and such based on actual lore, folktales, myths, and such like that with the additional mention of Destiel and now I ship all kinds of characters together from the show as well. So... yeah a good bit of my later years shipping as I call it is all because of his introduction to shows and such like that he knew that I would like or love.
