Gen Weekend 2022!
Tumblr media
💛 💛 🖤 🤍 💜 💛 💛
ABOUT THE EVENT
We all know shipping and romance is wildly popular, as it has every right to be, but now it’s time to shine a light on the beauty of friendship, platonic love & family!
What is Gen Weekend? Gen Weekend is named after the ‘gen’ category on AO3, that means: no romantic or sexual relationships, or relationships which are not the main focus of the work.
Tumblr media
The aim of Gen Weekend is to promote and celebrate stories which don’t have romantic love and sex as their main focus. We want your tales of life-changing friendships, your family dramas and your wild action adventures!
ASPEC friendly! This fandom event is consciously ace/aro friendly and inclusive. Some of the organisers are on the asexuality spectrum and encourage you to check out this great resource when it comes to writing asexual/aromantic characters.
WHEN? On the 25th, 26th and 27th of March.
HOW? On the above dates (or after! - the collection will remain open for a while) post your contributions to the AO3 collection (Queen_Gen_Weekend_2022) or alternatively on Tumblr, tagged ‘#GenWeekend2022’ and/or ‘#Gen Weekend 2022’. If you post on Tumblr, please also tag @queen-gen-week to make sure you get a reblog!

RULES & FAQ
⛔ Strictly No Negativity ⛔
This is the NUMBER ONE RULE of the event, to ensure that everybody feels safe to participate. No unsolicited criticism, provocations or hate aimed at creators or other commenters will be permitted, not on AO3 nor Tumblr. To help with this, we strongly recommend that you enable comment moderation.
Follow these steps if you receive a comment or ask that distresses you:
Do not engage. (You can take a screenshot as proof.)
Delete it. No ifs, no buts. Just delete it. (Don’t hesitate to block anon hate on Tumblr.)
Alert us via @queen-gen-week. As the organisers, we are here to actively support you. We’ve got your back, and we will gladly talk to you and help you feel better.
But what if one of the works has upset me?
Can the thing that upset you be tagged, but it wasn’t? Then please inform the organizers. We will bring it to the creator’s attention. (Remember to use the appropriate tags, everybody!)
Was the thing that upset you already tagged? Or is it perhaps simply the characterisation you find disagreeable? Then we suggest you click on the ‘back’ button, take a deep breath and remind yourself it's just fanfic.
Who can participate?
Anyone! This event is open to all content creators.
Can I combine prompts from different days?
By all means! The prompts are only there to inspire, you can follow them as closely or as freely as you like.
I'm not sure where my creation fits in, what day do I post it?
The days, like the prompts, are only suggestions. We don't mind when you post it, as long as you post it! Even if it's two weeks late!
Help, I've never posted fic before!
Don't worry, we've got you! (And more importantly, we've got AO3 invites!)  We are more than happy to walk you through the process of setting up an account.
I’m still too nervous to participate!
You can post anonymously to the collection. You can disable anon comments on your work. You can disable comments entirely and just collect the kudos. You can close anon asks on Tumblr temporarily. But most importantly, we want you here and we want to see what you’ve got!

Happy Ace Visibility week y’all!
I don’t normally do stuff like this, but this one is more personal for me and I felt like I wanted to say something for once. Although I’m still hesitant about it, I’ve found that asexuality is something I identify with more and more. It helps me make sense of myself and my feelings. Am I ace? Am I demi? I’m not always sure, but the fact that the community is so kind and welcoming helps me to know that I have the space to figure myself out and still be accepted. And that’s why visibility matters, isn’t it? So that people questioning can learn about who they are, and finally understand, and find support.
For me, as a writer, representation is such a huge part of visibility. I know there’s always been aspec kids who’ve never quite been able to identify with the characters in books or TV because of this heavy media focus on romance and whatnot. I know I was like that, always craving more close friendships in the stories I saw, and being so disappointed when it was always deemed necessary to make two characters “more than friends”, as if friendship wasn’t good enough or something.
I remember when I first came up with the ideas for Dusk and Norvori, and thinking to my fifteen-year-old self, “I’m going to make a story about two best friends who are cuddly and affectionate and follow each other to the ends of the earth, and it will absolutely NOT be romantic!”. The story got put down for a few years as I moved on to others, but I never stopped feeling that way. It wasn’t until college that I picked it up again. By then, I knew what asexuality was, and it was pretty clear that both main characters were ace, but it was through my rediscovery of my own work that I finally began to see myself through that lens as well, and so many things about myself began to click.
Not every kid is going to become a writer, but it’s safe to assume that almost every kid is going to read a book or watch a movie. Don’t they deserve to see themselves there in those characters, and to understand themselves and the things that might otherwise make them feel alone? And don’t they deserve to see themselves not demonized or relegated to a side character, but as protagonists and heroes who are good and kind and smart? With really cool swords maybe? That’s why it’s the responsibility of creators to represent a diverse audience. That’s why visibility matters, and why it matters to me.
Thanks for reading, if you read this far! As payment for your time, here’s a doodle of Dusk and Norvori, the two dorks who helped me figure all this out
