THE BIG VULCAN BIOLOGY POST (aka Vulcan is a Hell Planet)

DISCLAIMER: I am not a biologist, astrophysicist, neurologist, animal psychologist or literally anything that would qualify me to talk about this with 100% confidence. This is the result of dozens of headcanons and obsessive deep dive research. I don’t want this post to be three miles long, so after I address the planetary stuff I will oblige y’all with a Read More.

Adsfasdkfjhaslkdfh I’ve been working on this post for almost a month SO HERE WE GO!

First of all, Vulcan (aka T’Khasi) is a HELL PLANET, which is part of the reason they’re so badass, I say this for the following reasons:

No moon(s) (natural satellites)

Sodium (Salt) is so rare on the planet that Vulcan’s oceans are freshwater

It’s a “Super-Earth” (as in big chonkin’ planet of similar composition to earth in the “goldilocks region”)

Let’s do this.

“Vulcan has no moon Ms. Uhura.”

Tons of things change about our planet if there was no moon:

Much darker nights (no moonlight)

Much lower sea levels since there is no gravity from the moon to pull it upward.

Lower and weaker tides because the water is pulled by the sun instead of the moon, and it depends on how large the Vulcan solar system’s sun is for how big the waves are.

Stronger winds from faster planet rotation.

Depending on whether the axis of the planet would straighten or tilt further without the moon’s pull, combined with the faster rotation would lead to more severe seasons (strong tilt) or no seasons at all (no tilt)

The first factor may lead to Vulcan eyes being very catlike even if they aren’t nocturnal (I think they’re crepesucular but we’ll get into that later). Which given the likely nature of their blood and their herbivorous eating habits they probably aren’t. The sky would still be so dark that our human eyes couldn’t even see our hands in front of us, being blind when the sun goes down could be a death sentence. Alternatively, if they didn’t develop strong night vision that may be one of the reasons why they have such strong senses of hearing.

The stronger winds, faster rotation, and stronger (or nonexistent) seasons come from the lack of resistance and friction that stronger tides and the moon’s pull create on our planet. I suspect that Vulcan is larger, or at least denser than Earth, but I’ve been informed that according to the TMP novelization that it does rotate faster. I also think that Vulcan’s tilt is on the more extreme end to get the hostile extremes like storms and heat that we see on Vulcan.

If you look at this image of Vulcan, water covers way less of the planet’s surface than Earth. I don’t think this is necessarily because Vulcan has less water, but that it isn’t spread as far because of the lack of moon, and the fact that the oceans are freshwater, I’ll get into that shortly.

In the Star Trek: The Original Series (third) pilot The Man Trap, there is a creature that kills its victims by draining their bodies completely of salt. Spock encounters the creature but does not die, implying his (and Vulcans overall) body contains little to no salt. His justification is that his species did not evolve from a salinized ocean.

What does it mean to have oceans with no salt?

This has to mean that sodium is a very rare mineral on Vulcan, as the reason our oceans are so salinized is due to erosion of minerals by rainfall, carried from river to ocean. Salt in the ocean is also generated by submarine volcanic activity, which means either that the volcanoes on Vulcan (which we definitely know exist) somehow don’t produce salt, or the vast majority of the submarine volcanoes have been inactive for millions if not billions of years. The active volcanoes on Vulcan must be very far inland and/or Vulcan has almost no rivers, which given how hot the planet is, wouldn’t actually be too much of a stretch of the imagination.

Which means every single lifeform on T’Khasi, including Vulcans, evolved biosystems that exist without (or with very little) salt content. Any salt that exists would likely be deep beneath the planet’s surface, and within volcanoes.

No saltwater has a ton of consequences:

Plants (like underwater algae) are rarer and may not photosynthesize the same way Earth plants do, meaning less oxygen and more carbon dioxide, which means more greenhouse effect, which means higher temperatures.

The lack of salt would also mean less diverse plant life (at least as humans know it) and given the lack of visible rivers and vast swaths of desert on Vulcan, we can safely say vegetation must be hardier and infrequent.

Lower sea levels as the oceans would have lower density due to lack of salt.

Little to no water convection, which salt is crucial for on Earth. Which means warm ocean water doesn’t move to cold regions and vice versa. Creating extremes, the equator being obscenely hot, and polar waters freezing at the poles more extensively.

Lack of convection means more frequent and stronger storms like hurricanes.

If you thought the lack of a moon made Vulcan inhospitable, compound it with the low sodium factor and you’ve got a planet of even more severe extremes than before. The heat, and the decrease of plant diversity definitely explain why the vast majority of Vulcan is rocky desert, even being near the water poses more extreme dangers than it would on earth due to the increased frequency of hurricanes.

I am almost 100% sure that Vulcan is either bigger or denser than Earth. Which would explain why Vulcans are so much stronger than Humans and other species that exist on similar gravity worlds.

Effects of a high-gravity planet or “Super-Earth” include:

Everything is shorter or has very strong foundations, plants, animals, structures, and people.

More “Armageddon” class asteroids would hit the planet (like the one that killed the dinosaurs and created the Gulf of Mexico)

Larger liquid mantle under the planet’s surface, higher pressure under the surface as well.

Weaker magnetic field due to lack of convection in the planet’s core (not to be confused with the mantle interacting with the planet’s crust). Which means a weaker atmosphere, lower magnetism in surface metals, and increased vulnerability to solar flares.

More volcanically and seismically active due the the increase in the mantle’s size and generated heat, more earthquakes, and more volcanic eruptions.

Would have to have a smaller sun but be closer in orbit to it than earth.

Extremely deep oceans, potentially with water under so much pressure at the bottom that it becomes solid like ice. Luckily Vulcan is not an ocean world, because the pressure would block the planet’s core from interacting with the atmosphere, which would prevent life as we know it from happening.

There is plenty of evidence for this on so many levels. We never see any plant life similar to trees on Vulcan. Nor animals significantly larger than Vulcans, the ones that are bigger are much more muscular. Vulcan’s sky is more red than blue because of the lack of oxygen molecules for the light from the sun to filter as blue. I actually headcanon that Spock is unusually tall for a Vulcan because of his human heritage (Leonard Nimoy was around 6ft tall) , and may have had heart and muscle problems in his teens and early adulthood while on Vulcan.

Perhaps Vulcans are the result of many more extinction level events than we are, contributing to their hardiness. Perhaps they are, evolutionarily, not too much older than we are, and had more incentive to develop extraterrestrial technology than we have, so that they could repel Armageddon Class meteors and defend their planet against Solar Flares? Space travel being born out of self-preservation rather than curiosity. Which would absolutely account for their attitudes in the beginning of Star Trek: Enterprise.

It could be that Vulcans still maintain a semi-nomadic lifestyle even today because their planet is so incredibly volatile. Unsentimental and utilitarian in anything less than the most sacred of architecture long before they adopted the teachings of Surak. Their own survival more valuable than any structure that would inevitably be damaged or destroyed by their planet’s harsh environment.

In summary, Vulcan is a Nightmare Planet because:

So, so many much natural disasters, like, so many, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, hurricanes, twisters, just, so many more than Earth.

Water is relegated to specific locations in the world rather than spread across it due to lack of flow and lower sea levels.

Extreme temperature changes, intense heat, intense cold, hard to breathe, stronger gravity.

Due to the planet’s hostility, there is a smaller diversity of life than we have here on earth, which means fewer and hardier food sources that, like Vulcans, are very difficult to kill.

So… How do they handle it? What features have they developed to adapt and thrive in such an inhospitable place?

First thing is first, lets talk about

BLOOD

“My hemoglobin is based on copper, not iron.”

-Spock, Obsession

Funny thing is Spock, it’s not hemoglobin at all! It’s hemocyanin! In fact, there are earth animals that have it, among them Horseshoe Crabs, crustaceans, mollusks and spiders!

Hemocyanin is blue when it hasn’t been exposed to oxygen, and blue-green when it has, according to some sources on Vulcans their blood is orangey red when unexposed to air and that’s why they have pink lips and so on, but we can brush that off as chemical variation within their hemocyanin. Better yet, maybe it’s trendy for Vulcans to wear pink lipstick nowadays, ‘cause Surak knows how horny Humans and Vulcans are for each other XD! Anyway!

Hemocyanin does quite a few things that our blood can’t, it’s uniquely built for high pressure, low oxygen environments, as well as endure temperature extremes like cold (not unlike nights on their planet). Not only that, but it coagulates and clots WAY faster than our blood. Which means wounds seal themselves off from harmful bacteria and stop bleeding much faster than hemoglobin. Pair that with the Vulcan ability to enter a healing torpor, no wonder Spock keeps surviving environments and wounds that would definitely have killed a human.

Now, the animals I listed don’t have veins, which for us carry oxygen around via hemoglobin, so it’s possible that the same difference that causes Vulcan blood to be a coppery orange-red beneath the skin, is the same reason they have veins. Allowing them to look more like us and lack the exoskeletons and deep ocean delving that their earth blood cousins have.

Oh goodie, the Vulcan blood temperature discourse has arrived, the age old question, are Vulcans warm-blooded or cold-blooded? The answer to this question is

YES

I am firmly in the small (but hopefully growing) camp Vulcans Are Heterothermic. Among the earth animals we know to be heterothermic are bumblebees, several species of bats, the opah fish, and the arctic ground squirrel. Of all these animals, despite the opposite temperature intensity of Vulcan’s environment, I’m basing how Vulcans function on the last one, the arctic squirrel.

Which means they can deliberately control their body temperature in accordance to the needs of their survival. I imagine, just as arctic ground squirrels can drop their body below zero as needed (entering what is called a “daily torpor”) Vulcans can do the same. In turn, they could possibly skyrocket their bodies to temperatures that would be a lethal fever for humans. Which makes both McCoy’s “nonexistent Vulcan metabolism” comments in various episodes, as well as describing his blood as “ice water” make sense. As well as Spock being able to handle the heightened body temperature caused by Henoch in “Return to Tomorrow”. It also explains why Spock was in far better shape than Bones in the freezing temperatures of the planet from “All Our Yesterdays”.

However, like arctic squirrel newborns, they start out as ectothermic (cold-blooded) which lends itself to the Vulcan infants needing even more skin to skin to survive than humans theory by @acesexualspock. Being born cold blooded would prevent them from immediately dying the second they were exposed to the dangerous extremes of Vulcan’s heat. I also think they slowly lose the ability to control their metabolic rate as they grow older, slowing down dramatically as they age, which is why Spock gets increasingly colder as he ages rapidly in “The Deadly Years”.

I wanna thank @tribbleland for inspiring this part in particular.

I want to offer a special congratulations to furries people who let their love for anthro-cats bleed into their love for Vulcans, turns out Vulcans are very catlike! Like our feline Terran friends, Vulcans have what is called a Nicitating Membrane. It’s functions that would serve Vulcans well in their desert home include spreading moisture across the eye, protect the eye from small water and small debris (like sand for example), as well as protecting the eye from ultraviolet radiation, which is more or less what Spock said in that episode. Other animals that have Nicitating Membranes aside from felines is actually the majority of the animal kingdom, and primates (like us) are the exception and not the rule. I also subscribe to the idea that Vulcans have other desert dweller features like thick hair and eyelashes, sealable nostrils, big feet, a crepuscular sleep cycle (avoiding extreme midnight and midday temperatures), and a tough as nails digestive system!

As an added bonus fact since this section is pretty short: It makes purrfect sense for Vulcans to purr! In cats purring is an emotional regulator when they are angry or scared (Vulcans are ALL about regulating their emotions) as well as purring when they are happy. It is also a mechanism for healing themselves, their kittens, and their owners, the frequency at which cats purr (25-140 Hz) cover the same frequencies that are therapeutic for bone growth and fracture healing, pain relief, swelling reduction, wound healing, muscle growth and repair, tendon repair, and mobility of joints. I’m over here getting emotional about the mental image of like, Spock or Tuvok or smth sitting next to a wounded crewmember and just like, purring with a completely straight face and that is soft and just a little funny and I am emotionally compromised.

Surprise! This isn’t just going to be about Vulcan dietary needs, it’s gonna be about animal behaviors and self-domestication as well! I was trying to think of herbivores that are capable of eating meat, and then this idea hit me like a bomb going of in my head-

Vulcans are like Hippos!

I don’t mean I think they used to be hippo-like (visually anyway) somewhere along the evolutionary line. I mean that they were probably big, extremely aggressive, pack roaming herbivores that are able to eat carrion when food is scarce. Have you ever seen a video of a group of Hippos smashing an alligator to smithereens? They kill more humans than any solitary predator on the African continent! What about a murder of crows killing a cat that injured one of them, or a group of bison saving a calf from a lion?! Herbivores can be insanely aggressive while still being social, plant-eating animals.

With that in mind, let’s talk about self-domestication! This is something that we humans (and to an extent, cats too) did way back in our biology according to some studies, we bred out aggression and bred in cooperativeness and curiosity. Cats, while partially domesticated by us, started looking for mates that were more sociable so that their offspring could exist closer to humans (and their food) as well as to tolerate other cats. While I do think Vulcans self-domesticated to a degree, I do not think they were able to do so nearly to the same extent as humans or our deliberately domesticated companions. Vulcan is a harsh, violent, and unforgiving planet, even more so than Earth, if Vulcans were naturally as friendly and curious as we Humans are now, they would not have survived as a species.

I believe this is why their emotions are so primal and strong, and things like Pon Farr and their unusually high wariness of the new and unexpected still exist so strongly. How do they live together in such high numbers and develop a functional society? They developed other means of coping as a work-around the impracticality of decreasing aggression!

So, how do you have a species as aggressive, unforgiving, and frighteningly strong as Vulcans keep from completely destroying itself (aside from Surak’s teachings)? You take the empathy that humans already have, turn it up to 11, and tack on every evolutionary possibility to increase it. We already know how the Earth comparisons for Vulcan empathy: the extreme vitality of touch for the survival and emotional stability, cats purring to heal each other and themselves (and regulate emotions), nonverbal communication, the ancestral instincts of an infant animal being able to walk days after its born. What if we had all of these traits in remarkable spades, Vulcans certainly seem to! (Be prepared, the science starts getting a little squidgy because there are no real world comparisons and neurology research is very jargon heavy)

Electricity is a fundamental part of the biology of nearly all living things, it allows synapses to fire, regulates our internal organs, and gives us our senses of touch and movement. Skin to skin is so incredibly vital to the survival of infants, and the emotional stability for adults, that needing any more touch could be impractical and counterintuitive. So what if we got more from less? What if our sense of touch, and the acuteness of being able to read the emotions of others from body language and touch manifested as a form of what looks like from an outsider’s perspective, telepathy!

Now what if the radius of the sensation of touch could be extended much farther, say being able to sense someone to the same intensity I described in the last paragraph, like, through a wall or from across a room? What if you could connect to other lifeforms with the same ability like a chain circuit that could connect a whole species together in one giant circuitboard? I just described what Vulcans call the kwar’ma’khon, the telepathic energy that connects all Vulcans to each other!

Imagine having this same intense telepathic connection to someone for an extended period of time, like a t’hy’la or Bond Mate. What if you had a relatively easy to master non-lethal attack against other members of your species, that comes to you easily due to your intrinsic understanding of nerves and touch, like the Vulcan Nerve Pinch. In turn, what if, through the intensity of this connection you could transfer everything you knew and saw and felt to another person in the event of your death. That way, if you survived the harshness of your world without dying violently or unexpectedly, you could deliberately pass on that knowledge and those instincts to your next of kin, like the Katra. Now, that’s A LOT of empathy on top of A LOT of aggression, if you don’t have a work around for any of these, as a species you’d be rendered a complete emotional wreck pretty much 24/7 (or whatever the time cycles for Vulcan are). Which is where @ineffablebuddies theory that Vulcans can control, or at least mitigate their incredibly strong emotional reactions the same way they control their nervous system and metabolic rate. Which is how they are able to be touch telepathic, able to enter a torpor at will, and be heterothermic in the first place. The only reason Vulcans come off as unemotional to us is because we simply do not see and feel the way that they can. Unlike us, because of their ability to control their own internal chemistry, if they follow Surak’s teachings and/or Syrranite ideology, they can take that emotional regulation to the extreme.

Part four of my Master of Emotion Season 8 Rewrite.

Kai wakes up on a soft bed, the world around him hazy. Mmm, did he sleep in late? Usually Zane wakes them up early for training. Why-

Oh.

Oh, shit.

Yeah, okay, he remembers. He remembers what happened now. That’s nice. He kinda misses two seconds ago when he thought he was back on the ship.

He scrambled to his feet, looking around. The room he’s in looks nice, but it only takes him a few seconds to realize that all the furniture is bolted to the floor and that everything in the room would be near impossible to use as a weapon.

He looks down at his wrist, groaning as he notices that the bracelet with a clasp has been replaced by one with a lock.

Without even trying, he knows that the door is locked. He gives a half-hearted pull on it anyway, and it only confirms his suspicions.

It takes him about an hour of searching every nook and cranny before he fully admits to himself that he’s not getting out of here any time soon.

“Well isn’t this nice.” Kai grumbles quietly, flopping back onto the bed. “Could’ve at least given me some video games.”

With a loud sigh, he picks up a Rubix Cube, quickly shuffling it. Well, time to see if he can beat Zane’s record.

About three or four hours later, Kai is tired of the puzzle, annoyed at being captive, and wishing that he had gotten something for breakfast.

Glaring at the cube, he groans. Everything is so much more frustrating when you’re hungry.

After a few moments of consideration, he gets up and knocks on the door. “Hey, is anyone out there?” He calls.

There’s no response, but he can faintly hear muffled noises. Someone is out there, they’re just not acknowledging him.

With a sigh, he just gets to the point. “Could I maybe have something to eat? Please?”

There’s spoken words that he can’t make out, but then there’s a louder voice. “Yeah, I’ll get you something.”

“Thanks.” He breathes a sigh of relief and makes his way back to the bed. At least he knows that they don’t plan on starving him.

Which now that he thinks about it, makes a lot of sense. Harumi doesn’t want him hurt- she thinks she’s helping him. It’s a really deluded mindset, but at least it means that no one’s going to torture him.

About what he thinks is forty minutes later, a slot in the door opens and a tray is pushed through, the slot closing immediately after.

Kai blinks before going over to it. “Okay, this is seriously starting to feel like some kind of fancy prison cell.” He comments, picking it up.

He almost drops it right back onto the floor when he sees what it is.

Vindaloo, a kind of curry. His favorite kind of curry. Actually, it’s his favorite of any kind of food.

Kai swallows, nerves overtaking him. How do they know his favorite food? “Not that I don’t appreciate this, but this is really creepy. You get how creepy this is, right?”

There’s no response, and after a moment of hesitation, he decides to just eat it. From what he’s seen of Harumi so far, it’s probably not poisoned.

With a sigh, he picks up the fork- they actually have him both that and a spoon- and starts to eat. He’s too hungry to debate whether or not he shouldn’t.

Lloyd paces around his room, cursing himself for his mistake. He’s realized that confronting Kai straight on like that was a bad idea and is more than ready to apologize, but the Master of Emotion is nowhere to be found.

He had only been expecting Kai to be gone for a few hours, maybe come back in the morning or midday at the latest. But now that a second night has passed and there’s still no sign of him, he’s starting to worry that he’d gotten himself kidnapped again.

But it’ll be fine. They’ll find him sooner or later, apologize, and get him back. They just need to explain that they were worried because they had found an old text about a previous Master of Emotion who had flattened an entire city after breaking a leg.

The hard part will be finding Kai before someone tries to manipulate him into doing something he shouldn’t.

Lloyd sighs, running his fingers through his hair. They’ll find him. They have to find him.

It’ll be fine.

Or at least, that’s what he keeps telling himself…

Cole throws another punch at the sparring bot, trying to ignore his tension. They’ve searched all over Ninjago, and they still haven’t managed to find him. If he’s hiding, he’s doing a damn good job at it. If he’s gotten captured…

It’s better not to think about it.

Trying to ignore his stress, he continues sparring with the bot, hitting and kicking and even throwing rocks at it.

Until eventually he throws it to the ground, sparks coming off of its now visible circuits. But even then, he doesn’t stop, continuing to beat on it until all of the lights flicker out and it shuts down.

Panting, he gets to his feet, hands trembling and dust swirling around him. After a few moments of consideration, he activates another bot.

He needs to stop thinking.

Nya picks up another tool and continues to work on her latest invention- a pair of shoes that should repel water to the point that the wearer could walk on it as a solid surface. The main problem is that making it have the proper functions without it being too heavy.

Jay is beside her, working on the same project. The two of them exchange notes and try new strategies- they’ve been working on this for at least six hours now.

And Nya knows that the reason Jay is focusing so hard is that he doesn’t want to think about what happened to Kai- that’s the same reason she is.

Because she can’t help but feel like it’s her fault. She should’ve realized that he would react like that and found a different way to bring up the topic.

“Could you hand me that spudger?” Jay asks, pointing at the tool in question.

Wordlessly, she picks it up and hands it over, getting a quiet thanks in response.

With a sigh, she continues her work, trying to ignore her worries about what happened to Kai. Zane is the one working on it, and he had kicked everyone out of his work area to allow himself to concentrate, meaning that everyone was forced to find something else to do.

It’s going to be okay. Zane will find him, they’ll all explain the situation, and everything will go back to how it was before.

It’s going to be okay.

Zane types in another set of search parameters to his computer. While he waits for the results to come back, he continues his scans from the large screens on the bridge.

He would be doing this inside his head, but he needs to be using all of his processing power on connecting the minimal clues that they had acquired.

They know that Kai had been in New Ninjago City just yesterday and had been somewhere near Lloyd, and Zane had managed to trace his energy signal all the way down to Central Station, but once it reached there, it became muffled by the distance from the surface, and he had lost track of him.

Despite his best efforts, Zane has been unable to find any other clues. No matter how many security cameras he hacks or how many different scans he puts in, he just can’t seem to get a location.

He glances back over at the computer, a quiet sigh escaping him when he sees that the scan had come back negative.

“Where are you, Kai?” He whispers, staring at his work hopelessly.

If he has to shut off his tear ducts to prevent him from crying, well… that’s no one’s business but his own.

Do Horses Love Garlic?

The History of Garlic

Garlic is one of the oldest known foods and has been consumed by humans for several thousand years dating back to 2600-2100 BC. Its roots began in China, Japan, and Korea. From there it migrated to the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea and then Great Britain. Today, it is one of the most popular medicinal foods in the world. Garlic is used across the globe, including India, Egypt, and Israel, for its nutritional and culinary value, as well as its medicinal properties. Close relatives to garlic include onion, shallot, leeks, and chives.

Garlic for Nutrition

Garlic, which is categorized as a vegetable, contains high levels of sulphur and vitamin B1 (thiamine), both of which nourish the skin. And because Vitamin B1 changes the body odor, it is a popular addition to supplements to help resist or repel insects including flies and ticks. Garlic also contains the essential minerals of calcium, phosphorus, manganese, and selenium, as well as a high content of Vitamin C. There is also germanium in it; a lesser known but still important mineral with antioxidant properties that heals wounds, strengthens the immune system, and has been used in cases of cancer.

Garlic as Medicine

Garlic contains allicin, a phytonutrient which breaks down to form a variety of organosulfur compounds, compounds which give garlic a number of therapeutic effects. Garlic is widely used for bacterial infections, yeast infections, viruses, colds, flus, immune problems, respiratory conditions, toothaches, abscesses, a lack of appetite, and low vitality. In war-time Russia, garlic was known as “Russian penicillin” because it was so effective in treating wound infections. In more recent times we have learned that garlic is also an effective blood thinner and helps to reduce high blood pressure as well as cholesterol. There is also an association between the intake of garlic and the reduction of certain cancers.

All this considered, garlic makes an excellent tonic.

Garlic is also thought to ward off ghosts and negative energies and can be used for those people or animals who are prone to attracting entities that deplete their life force.

Garlic as Horse Medicine

It seems that everyone is passionate about garlic! There are garlic lovers and there are garlic haters. Especially when it comes to feeding it to horses! In fact, one of my Facebook posts on garlic was in the top ten posts ever for record engagements. Whew! That’s a lot of passion over garlic. The conversation went on for days.

Garlic lovers see a lot of positive changes in their garlic-eating horses. Garlic can help horses with digestive upsets, leaky gut, respiratory problems, infections, skin problems, and overall malaise. It is also an excellent general detoxifier. Garlic can also be used as a poultice on abscesses, wounds, and joint infections.

What The Studies Say

Some horse folks are fearful to feed garlic because of its reported effects on red blood cells. But studies are sparse and often unreasonable and inconclusive. One study showed that high quantities of garlic over several weeks can lead to anemia, i.e., a reduction in red blood cells. The study included four horses and two of them were controls which meant that only two horses ate the garlic which was fed in freeze dried form. These two horses were given .1 grams/kg of body weight (approximately 45 grams in total) every day to start which was then gradually increased to .5 grams/kg (approximately 227 grams in total) of garlic over 41 days. This higher dosage was then continued for another 30 days for a total of 71 days.

This means that a one-thousand-pound horse would have been fed the equivalent to 7 medium cloves of raw garlic for the first 6 weeks and then up to 38 medium cloves of raw garlic for another month!

And so, perhaps of no surprise, after 2-1/2 months of these toxic doses the horses’ blood work showed a type of anemia called Heinz body anemia but no other visible signs of physical symptoms or other health problems. Symptoms of anemia can include fatigue, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, pale gums, and yellowish eyes. In any case, within 5 weeks of discontinuing the garlic, all of the blood work returned to normal.

Another study used 250 grams per day on 1,000-pound horses with the same results.

Now I don’t know about you, but I don’t know why any sensible horse person would feed their beloved horses these kinds of toxic dosages. It defies common sense. Few vegetables or plants would NOT be toxic if fed in this way. It’s all about the dose. Horses are very sensitive and do not need to be overdosed with anything for it to work.

According to the National Research Council in 2008, a presumed safe intake for horses is 90 mg/kg (= .09 grams) of body weight per day (6 raw cloves) and a historically safe intake is 15 mg/kg (.015 grams) of body weight per day (1 raw clove).

Meanwhile Health Canada has approved garlic for all equine supplements, with a precaution to not feed to any horses with a bleeding disorder. Fair enough.

Garlic as People Medicine

The effects of garlic on red blood cells are not exclusive to horses, it has the same effects on humans, and dogs too. In fact, it is these chemical properties that make it such an excellent antioxidant to improve circulation and reduce blood pressure. And so, while some people may be nervous about its supposedly adverse effects on horses, many of these same people are eating lots of garlic for themselves. But no one is worried about the same potentially toxic effects on people because they are focused on the benefits. In fact, the world production of garlic for human consumption is over 25 million tons! That’s a lot of garlic!

My own mother took garlic every day for many years and credited it for her strong immune system. Good thing she didn’t live in ancient Greece though, the authorities of the time forbade anyone who smelled like garlic from entering their sacred temples.

How to Feed Garlic to Horses

Horses are also garlic lovers and garlic haters, although most of them really like it. They must know that garlic has a long history of helping people and animals with its nutritional, medicinal, and therapeutic benefits. So, we side with both the horses and Health Canada and highly recommend it for equine medicinal purposes where indicated. But like all medicinal herbs and supplements, it should only be given if the benefits are obvious, and of course it should not be given over long periods of time as in months or years. A shorter duration will not only prevent any kind of toxic effects, but it will avoid desensitization where the body no longer responds to it in a positive way. Most herbs or supplements, if given for longer than is needed, will lose their potency. So, it is always best to use herbal plants or vegetables temporarily as indicated for specific situations.

The Garlic Equine Dosage

Raw garlic is the best and most potent form. Feed 2-3 medium or large cloves daily for 2-3 weeks or less if the condition improves. And if your horse doesn’t like the taste or stops eating it take that as a sign that your horse is finished with it. My own horses let me know when they have had enough because they start to flip the cloves out of their dish. This is usually after about 2 weeks of 2-3 garlic cloves per day. Horses know best!

Warning for violent character deaths

With our sights set upon the Cove, I decided it was best to send our fastest men in to scout the place and attempt to figure out what could be stealing the inhabitants of my Hamlet. Heading in blind was a sure fire way to ensure that we lost more people, but even to this day, the last thing I had anticipated was news that spirits were haunting the coves. Initially I thought that I was the victim of a jest, but I had never known Dismas to lie in his reports, so I believed him. After all, at this point, was it truly so strange compared to everything else we had fought?

I was, at the time, unfamiliar with how they worked. Everything I knew was from stories passed around campfires to try and scare the more faint-hearted, so I called Alhazred to try and understand what we were against. He explained to me that some ghosts are harmless, but others should be feared. Those who are bound to this world through malice have been known to cause physical harm. It could be that the missing citizens heard something odd and decided to investigate, but their curiosity costed them their lives when the specters found them.

With a unique enemy on our hands, I attempted to assemble the best crew for dealing with these ghosts. Alhazred was a natural choice given his area of expertise. He was confident that if we found these ghosts, he could seal them away and prevent them from causing any further damage. Dismas was another natural choice given the fact that he was the one who had done the majority of scouting in the area. If anyone was going to know the safest paths within the coves, it was him. Tardif and Jingles were not additions I planned on making, however. Jingles offered his services both to keep things calm in the face of these spirits, but also because he was a more capable fighter than he appeared. He promised he would not slow us down. Tardif was ultimately allowed to come as well given that he could deal with anything more physical should we encounter trouble within the Coves beyond the ghosts.

As we walked through, Dismas attempted to explain more of what he saw. He explained that due to his time as a highwayman, he came to recognize other types of criminals. The clothes the ghosts wore were not quite uniforms, he explained, but they resembled more of the outfits of pirates. They would often blend different uniforms along with whatever cloth they had available. The lack of a coherent uniform was their tell-tale sign, essentially.

Fortunately for Dismas, he didn’t have to wait long for his explanation to make sense. As we traveled further within the Cove, we started to discover the shattered remains of ships. Initially it wasn’t much, just a plank here and there, half rotten and covered in seaweed and the likes. As we followed the trail of wreckage, we started to see more of the ships, and with them, the first of the ghosts.

They were not so different from the skeletons we had seen back in the dungeon, save for the fact that they had an unnatural blue glow about them. The first we saw was simply walking across the broken mast of a ship before all at once he lifted his head, quickly looking around as if he was alerted to something. We were careful not to make too much noise and to try to pass by him, but all at once, his head snapped in our direction. The specter howled and then charge. I didn’t notice it at first, but looking back, he did not pay my companions any mind, but instead he was charging at me. It didn’t work out in his favor as Alhazred was faster.

It continued like this as we pressed further and further in. It seemed like the deepest parts of the cove were nothing more than a ship graveyard. There seemed to be an endless supply of specters to attack us, or rather, me. At the time I did not know why they had such an intense hatred for me, but I had my suspicions as to who I could blame for it. Regardless, I started to wonder how much more we would have to put up with. I asked our Occultist what could be done about the countless ghosts. He chewed at his lip as I saw him wrack his brain. I feared that perhaps he had not been as honest about his knowledge and that we were in over our heads to deal with this problem, but as I was about to ask if he truly knew anything on ghosts, he spoke up again. He said he had a suspicion that there was a curse that was binding them to this place. If he could either break it or find a way to render them powerless, then the problem would be solved.

He then turned to Dismas and asked if he knew anything further on the pirates that we were encountering. The highwayman paused to give the question some thought. He then said that it seemed as if they weren’t all from the same crew. Some uniform pieces were simply too old to survive sea that long. He then motioned to the broken ships around us, suggesting that perhaps there was an original ship that is the source of the curse, the rest were simply pulled into it. They were unfortunate enough to crash into this cursed location, and now they were just a part of fit. Alhazred gave a nod and said it was a good observation but voiced his concern about figuring out which was the first ship. No one had an answer for that, so the scholar sighed and said we would just have to keep going. With some luck, it would be obvious.

The deeper we traveled, the harder it was to dodge the bits of ships that we found. Eventually we found ourselves having to walked through cracked hulls in order to continue our path, but that all came to a stop when we saw the most curious sight. Where the water just met the Cove, there was a ship hull. Attached to the hull was an anchor bound in its own chains. Within the chains were old bones that had long since turned yellow from exposure. I told Alhazred that if anything was bound to be cursed, it was going to be that anchor. I could not think of a single way such a tragedy could occur naturally, and he agreed.

Cautiously, we approached. Tardif stayed behind to keep watch in case anything tried to ambush us. As we got closer, there was a terrible feeling that washed over me. I could already taste the salt from the sea water in the air before, but now it was thicker. It took everything I had not to start coughing and hacking. Alhazred must have felt it as well as he held his skull closer, muttering to it, likely repelling whatever curse haunted the anchor away from himself. Dismas and Jingles were quick to back off, and I could not blame them. If it felt like an option, I would have stayed behind as well.

Once we finally made it to the cursed anchor, Alhazred reached a hand out and attempted to touch it, perhaps to get a better understanding of the curse, perhaps because he was just curious, but regardless of intent, it caused the crew tied to that anchor to suddenly spring to life. Behind us we heard the horrible sounds of someone choking. Quickly I looked back to see one of the skeletal figures bending over Tardif. In it’s boney hands, it held a boat hook that was stuck firmly in his his shoulder. The bounty hunter was doubled over as he fell to his knees. Even from my distance, I could see the water that he coughed up through his helmet. Dismas attempted to save him, firing upon the figure, but it hardly budged as it continued to curse the bounty hunter until he didn’t struggle anymore.

I barely had a moment to process the fact that I had watched Tardif drown on land when I heard the most discordant screech from a violin that had not been tuned in years. My shoulders tensed and all I could do was cover my ears to try and block out the horrible, cursed tune. At once, Jingles attempted to play over it. It helped take the worst of the sting out of the horrible screech of those strings. This quick thinking allowed Alhazred to focus once more. His hand was firmly planted on the anchor at this point and I could hear quick, hushed chanting, though I knew nothing of what he said. Regardless, the candle on the skull in his hands started to flicker and burn brighter as he spoke.

Seeing as how I could be of no help to Alhazred, I backed off and returned to Dismas and Jingles’ side as the rest of the crew continued to manifest, attempting to close in on us. Our attacks seemed to do very little as my sword would pass through the apparition. Bullets hardly seemed to do much either, but their attacks found us just fine. The only thing that seemed to phase them was the sound of Jingles’ lute. The more pleasant sound seemed to cause them to recoil and it kept Alhazred safe for as long as the jester played.

We stayed close, hoping that Jingles would not grow tired as he kept the ghosts at bay. The only thing Dismas and I could do was watch as more manifested with each round of chanting that Alhazred performed. Eventually, we saw what we assumed was the Captain of the cursed ship. Unlike his companions, he seemed to have the ability to press through Jingles’ music and we noticed it far too late.

Initially he stayed back with his crew, but his reactions were not the same as those around him. It was likely the captain was a poor actor in his life as his recoils were half-hearted at best. Dismas and I noticed this at once and attempted to move between the ghost of the captain and Jingles, but it seemed that the captain was faster on the draw. As he saw us move, he pulled the pistol from the holster on this chest and fired. Our poor jester attempted to raise the lute to save himself, but it fired through. He dropped to the ground, not dead yet, but gravely injured.

All at once, the ghosts rushed. We failed to protect Jingles, but we would not fail Alhazred. Dismas and I did the only thing we could and stood between him and the ghosts, ignoring the choking feeling the anchor gave. The ghosts attempted to attack, but we took the hits until Alhazred’s final chant ended. We heard the chains loosen on the anchor and drop the bodies it held. At once, the ghosts began to fade. At this moment, we rushed to the aid of our injured companion. Alhazred joined us and, despite his very obvious exhaustion, attempted another spell.

The gunshot wound attempted to close, but it was not enough. Alhazred was too tired to see it through and our friend bled out before our eyes. In that moment, I felt ashamed. Was there truly nothing we could have done to protect him? I felt as if I went into a battle with half baked ideas again and two people paid the price this time. I could feel my hands shake, and I wasn’t sure if it was due to the shock of having two more people die, or from my wounds.

My companions sat with me in silence as we mourned the loss of Tardif and of Jingles. After what felt like hours, Dismas finally spoke up. He pointed out that Alhazred was likely about to faint after performing such an impressive act and that we had our own wounds that needed treatment before they became infected. Someone else could come by and collect the bodies. Alhazred voiced his agreement and started to move towards the door, waiting for me and Dismas. The highwayman offered me his hand and I took it. I found myself leaning on him before we left the cove. The act helped me from breaking until we reached the Hamlet.

From there, we visited the healers at the Sanitarium and had our wounds cleaned and treated. They asked about our other companions and Dismas informed them of their demise. They tried their best to comfort me, but their words felt hollow at the time. I knew it was my fault, their reassurances that I couldn’t have known felt wrong.

Once we were released, Dismas refused to let me return to the Estate, insisting that I shouldn’t be alone for now. He steered me towards the Tavern and had me sit at our usual games table. I told him that I was in no mood to play, and he said he understood. So instead, we talked. We talked about what we did before we arrived at the Hamlet. I learned of how he learned his tricks he used during games, I told him about my studies. He told me why he gave up his life as a highwayman, I told him of the agreement I made with Damian. He gave me lots of strange looks about Damian and told me to be careful.

I suppose Alhazred had told the others of what happened, for slowly but surely more of our companions arrived and invited themselves to our table. They didn’t speak of the deaths, but the sympathetic looks were enough to tell me that they knew. Still, I found myself appreciating their company. Dismas was right, if I were alone with my thoughts that evening, I have no doubt I would have fallen apart. Before I finally decided I needed to rest, I bought my friend a drink and I embraced him. We lingered for a moment before he told me to please get some rest. The Hamlet needed me at my best.

When I returned, I found Damian resting already and decided to leave him be. I returned to my chambers and fell asleep soon enough. However, when I woke up, I had a strange lock in my hands. I looked up to a large set of wooden doors and realized I had never seen them before in my life. In a blind panic, I looked around to try and figure out where I was. I had a feeling I was underground as there was a lack of light except for what came from an open door behind me. I dropped the lock and dashed for the door and found that it opened into a long hallway. That ended in a trapdoor that I frantically climbed out of. At last I saw the familiar sight of the wine cellar below my Estate. I wondered how I never noticed the trap door until I looked around the room and noticed the table knocked over. At this point, the room started to grow lighter as Damian descended the stairs, lantern in hand.

He looked at me with a confused expression and I frantically tried to explain what had happened. He had me take him into the basement and show him the lock that I was holding. He seemed just as perplexed as me but decided that it was best to leave it be for now. He noted that it smelled like something was rotting on the other side. I then noticed the smell and scrunched my nose. He was right. It was that sickly, sweet smell of putrefaction. We decided that there was not much we could do about it in the dead of the night, so we returned to the first floor of the Estate instead.

At that point I was too shaken to rest. I told him that I found myself having strange dreams and then I’d wake up in a different room in the Hamlet, but this was the first time I woke up in that room with a lock in my hand. He asked me to detail these dreams, but I found it difficult to recall much at the time. I admitted that I was pretty shaken between the deaths and waking up in an unfamiliar place, so my memory was patchy at best at the time. He seemed genuinely surprised by this news and so I had the unfortunate job of informing him that we had lost two more heroes that day.

He listened and then he asked if he could offer me something. I said he could, and at that time Damian began to explain what he had learn from his time in the Church about death. He knew I didn’t believe in the Light, but he said that no matter what I did believe, they were at peace now. They were heroes, the Light would be foolish to banish them into the dark. It is true that I didn’t believe in the Light and their teachings, but still, his words were comforting. It was something to ease my mind, I suppose. It’s funny, isn’t it? The idea that the dead are resting peacefully is somehow a comfort. They’re still dead, they’re still gone, and yet hearing that they are not suffering is enough to make someone feel a little more at peace with what happened.

I thanked Damian for the kind words before retiring to the den. He came with and we continued to talk about nothing in particular until eventually I fell asleep. I don’t recall when it happened, but I recall waking up to the morning light coming in the window. There was no sight of Damian, he had likely gone to his own duties for the day, so I decided it was about time to do the same.

Mina Harker's Journal.

I am more than ever sure that I am right. My new conclusion is ready, so I shall get our party together and read it. They can judge it; it is well to be accurate, and every minute is precious.

Mina Harker's Memorandum.

(Entered in her Journal.)

Ground of inquiry. -- Count Dracula's problem is to get back to his own place.

He must be brought back by some one. This is evident; for had he power to move himself as he wished he could go either as man, or wolf, or bat, or in some other way. He evidently fears discovery or interference, in the state of helplessness in which he must be -- confined as he is between dawn and sunset in his wooden box.

How is he to be taken? -- Here a process of exclusions may help us. By road, by rail, by water?

By Road. -- There are endless difficulties, especially in leaving the city.

There are people; and people are curious, and investigate. A hint, a surmise, a doubt as to what might be in the box, would destroy him.

There are, or there may be, customs and octroi officers to pass.

His pursuers might follow. This is his highest fear; and in order to prevent his being betrayed he has repelled, so far as he can, even his victim -- me!

By Rail. -- There is no one in charge of the box. It would have to take its chance of being delayed; and delay would be fatal, with enemies on the track. True, he might escape at night; but what would he be, if left in a strange place with no refuge that he could fly to? This is not what he intends; and he does not mean to risk it.

By Water. -- Here is the safest way, in one respect, but with most danger in another. On the water he is powerless except at night; even then he can only summon fog and storm and snow and his wolves. But were he wrecked, the living water would engulf him, helpless; and he would indeed be lost. He could have the vessel drive to land; but if it were unfriendly land, wherein he was not free to move, his position would still be desperate.

We know from the record that he was on the water; so what we have to do is to ascertain what water.

The first thing is to realise exactly what he has done as yet; we may, then, get a light on what his later task is to be.

Firstly. -- We must differentiate between what he did in London as part of his general plan of action, when he was pressed for moments and had to arrange as best he could.

Secondly we must see, as well as we can surmise it from the facts we know of, what he has done here.

As to the first, he evidently intended to arrive at Galatz, and sent invoice to Varna to deceive us lest we should ascertain his means of exit from England; his immediate and sole purpose then was to escape. The proof of this, is the letter of instructions sent to Immanuel Hildesheim to clear and take away the box before sunrise. There is also the instruction to Petrof Skinsky. These we must only guess at; but there must have been some letter or message, since Skinsky came to Hildesheim.

That, so far, his plans were successful we know. The Czarina Catherine made a phenomenally quick journey -- so much so that Captain Donelson's suspicions were aroused; but his superstition united with his canniness played the Count's game for him, and he ran with his favouring wind through fogs and all till he brought up blindfold at Galatz. That the Count's arrangements were well made, has been proved. Hildesheim cleared the box, took it off, and gave it to Skinsky. Skinsky took it -- and here we lose the trail. We only know that the box is somewhere on the water, moving along. The customs and the octroi, if there be any, have been avoided.

Now we come to what the Count must have done after his arrival -- on land, at Galatz.

The box was given to Skinsky before sunrise. At sunrise the Count could appear in his own form. Here, we ask why Skinsky was chosen at all to aid in the work? In my husband's diary, Skinsky is mentioned as dealing with the Slovaks who trade down the river to the port; and the man's remark, that the murder was the work of a Slovak, showed the general feeling against his class. The Count wanted isolation.

My surmise is, this: that in London the Count decided to get back to his castle by water, as the most safe and secret way. He was brought from the castle by Szgany, and probably they delivered their cargo to Slovaks who took the boxes to Varna, for there they were shipped for London. Thus the Count had knowledge of the persons who could arrange this service. When the box was on land, before sunrise or after sunset, he came out from his box, met Skinsky and instructed him what to do as to arranging the carriage of the box up some river. When this was done, and he knew that all was in train, he blotted out his traces, as he thought, by murdering his agent.

I have examined the map and find that the river most suitable for the Slovaks to have ascended is either the Pruth or the Sereth. I read in the typescript that in my trance I heard cows low and water swirling level with my ears and the creaking of wood. The Count in his box, then, was on a river in an open boat -- propelled probably either by oars or poles, for the banks are near and it is working against stream. There would be no such sound if floating down stream.

Of course it may not be either the Sereth or the Pruth, but we may possibly investigate further. Now of these two, the Pruth is the more easily navigated, but the Sereth is, at Fundu, joined by the Bistritza which runs up round the Borgo Pass. The loop it makes is manifestly as close to Dracula's castle as can be got by water.

When I had done reading, Jonathan took me in his arms and kissed me. The others kept shaking me by both hands, and Dr. Van Helsing said:---

"Our dear Madam Mina is once more our teacher. Her eyes have been where we were blinded. Now we are on the track once again, and this time we may succeed. Our enemy is at his most helpless; and if we can come on him by day, on the water, our task will be over. He has a start, but he is powerless to hasten, as he may not leave his box lest those who carry him may suspect; for them to suspect would be to prompt them to throw him in the stream where he perish. This he knows, and will not. Now men, to our Council of War; for, here and now, we must plan what each and all shall do."

"I shall get a steam launch and follow him," said Lord Godalming.

"And I, horses to follow on the bank lest by chance he land," said Mr. Morris.

"Good!" said the Professor, "both good. But neither must go alone. There must be force to overcome force if need be; the Slovak is strong and rough, and he carries rude arms." All the men smiled, for amongst them they carried a small arsenal. Said Mr. Morris:---

"I have brought some Winchesters; they are pretty handy in a crowd, and there may be wolves. The Count, if you remember, took some other precautions; he made some requisitions on others that Mrs. Harker could not quite hear or understand. We must be ready at all points." Dr. Seward said:---

"I think I had better go with Quincey. We have been accustomed to hunt together, and we two, well armed, will be a match for whatever may come along. You must not be alone, Art. It may be necessary to fight the Slovaks, and a chance thrust -- for I don't suppose these fellows carry guns -- would undo all our plans. There must be no chances, this time; we shall, not rest until the Count's head and body have been separated, and we are sure that he cannot re-incarnate." He looked at Jonathan as he spoke, and Jonathan looked at me. I could see that the poor dear was torn about in his mind. Of course he wanted to be with me; but then the boat service would, most likely, be the one which would destroy the ... the ... the ... Vampire. (Why did I hesitate to write the word?) He was silent awhile, and during his silence Dr. Van Helsing spoke:---

"Friend Jonathan, this is to you for twice reasons. First, because you are young and brave and can fight, and all energies may be needed at the last; and again that it is your right to destroy him -- that -- which has wrought such woe to you and yours. Be not afraid for Madam Mina; she will be my care, if I may. I am old. My legs are not so quick to run as once; and I am not used to ride so long or to pursue as need be, or to fight with lethal weapons. But I can be of other service; I can fight in other way. And I can die, if need be, as well as younger men. Now let me say that what I would is this: while you, my Lord Godalming and friend Jonathan go in your so swift little steamboat up the river, and whilst John and Quincey guard the bank where perchance he might be landed, I will take Madam Mina right into the heart of the enemy's country. Whilst the old fox is tied in his box, floating on the running stream whence he cannot escape to land -- where he dares not raise the lid of his coffin-box lest his Slovak carriers should in fear leave him to perish -- we shall go in the track where Jonathan went, -- from Bistritz over the Borgo, and find our way to the Castle of Dracula. Here, Madam Mina's hypnotic power will surely help, and we shall find our way -- all dark and unknown otherwise -- after the first sunrise when we are near that fateful place. There is much to be done, and other places to be made sanctify, so that that nest of vipers be obliterated." Here Jonathan interrupted him hotly:---

"Do you mean to say, Professor Van Helsing, that you would bring Mina, in her sad case and tainted as she is with that devil's illness, right into the jaws of his death-trap? Not for the world! Not for Heaven or Hell!" He became almost speechless for a minute, and then went on:---

"Do you know what the place is? Have you seen that awful den of hellish infamy -- with the very moonlight alive with grisly shapes, and every speck of dust that whirls in the wind a devouring monster in embryo? Have you felt the Vampire's lips upon your throat?" Here he turned to me, and as his eyes lit on my forehead he threw up his arms with a cry: "Oh, my God, what have we done to have this terror upon us!" and he sank down on the sofa in a collapse of misery. The Professor's voice, as he spoke in clear, sweet tones, which seemed to vibrate in the air, calmed us all:---

"Oh, my friend, it is because I would save Madam Mina from that awful place that I would go. God forbid that I should take her into that place. There is work -- wild work -- to be done there, that her eyes may not see. We men here, all save Jonathan, have seen with their own eyes what is to be done before that place can be purify. Remember that we are in terrible straits. If the Count escape us this time -- and he is strong and subtle and cunning -- he may choose to sleep him for a century, and then in time our dear one" -- he took my hand -- "would come to him to keep him company, and would be as those others that you, Jonathan, saw. You have told us of their gloating lips; you heard their ribald laugh as they clutched the moving bag that the Count threw to them. You shudder; and well may it be. Forgive me that I make you so much pain, but it is necessary. My friend, is it not a dire need for the which I am giving, possibly my life? If it were that any one went into that place to stay, it is I who would have to go to keep them company."

"Do as you will," said Jonathan, with a sob that shook him all over, "we are in the hands of God!"

My GOT Ending: The Battle of King’s Landing (Episode 5 Season 8) Part 3

On the back of Drogon, Daenerys, Bran and Samwell finally arrive in sight of the capital, to see the full extent of the disaster. A naval battle is raging in the bay, while the streets of the city are submerged by the troops of the army of the dead, who are constantly advancing overwhelming towards the fortifications of the red dungeon. In addition, Viserion flies over the city with its terrible rider and continues its ravages. Daenerys makes Drogon lands in Dragonpit, where she leaves Samwell and Bran, well away from the city and the battle. Daenerys knows she has no choice but to face the undead dragon again, once her beloved child. Although she knows that the necromantic magic that animates Viserion offers a certain advantage to the latter against the attacks of Drogon, the young queen does not hesitate and flies, under the eyes of two young men. The Night King immediately notices the form of Drogon in the air and rushing straight at him. He also notices Daenerys. The look of the young queen against him makes it a challenge. Taking his sword of ice, the king of the walkers launch Viserion to the attack, and the two dragons, roaring loudly, clash violently against each other for a new dance of dragons. At first inflicting violent bites and claws while spinning in the sky, Drogon and Viserion come to try to spit flames on each other, but the breaths don't touch. Streets and entire squares of the city are swept by the fire breaths of the two flying reptiles. Viserion manages to make his way to Drogon's back and tries to snap Daenerys between his jaws, which she narrowly avoids. Drogon replies by biting deeply Viserion at the throat. While holding firm, Daenerys can see the Night King, harpooning her with his blue and icy gaze, and visibly trying to find stability to throw an ice javelin directly at her. ******** From a window in the throne room, Cersei attends the apocalypse that falls on her city. The naval battle, the streets devastated by the white walkers and the duel of dragons in the air .... But madness prevails over her reason. _ "Kill them, now!" she orders to the Mountain, pointing to Jaime and Bronn. The Mountain executes the order and assaults a violent lateral blow which would have cut Jaime in two if he had not dodged. Jaime and Bronn agree to attack the colossus on both sides, but Gregor manages to parry their attacks, or seems to feel no pain inflicted by their blades. Bronn uses his talents to pass Gregor's defense and inflicts several injuries on his ribs and right shoulder. Gregor reacts and pushes Bronn back with a powerful punch. Bronn falls to the ground, gasping. Jaime in turn dodges or blocks the massive attacks of the golem of flesh, undergoing several cuts on the shoulders. But ignoring the pain, Jaime uses his reflex knight and great swordsman to counter a blow that would have been fatal, and beyond the defense of his opponent, manages to place him a stab in the ribs, but surprisingly, Gregor remains insensitive to this important injury and in turn pierces Jaime at the ribs. Jaime lets out a groan of great pain, before receiving a violent setback that projects him several meters back. Having seen this, Bronn tries to save Jaime by attacking the Mountain again, but after several blows blocked, is again repelled and sounded by another reverse of the Golem. Remained behind, Cersei observes the fight with interest and satisfaction to see her invincible guard take over. Jaime is stunned, heavily wounded, and can not get back on his feet, seeing Gregor's tall figure coming towards him to finish him off. Sandor and Brienne, still pursued by some guards, burst into the throne room. While Brienne finishes the last remaining guards, Sandor lays eyes on his big brother. ********* Varys led Davos, Melisandre and Tyrion through the city's numerous subterranean networks to reach a very special place: the underground warehouse used to store the wildfire. The master spy absolutely wants to prevent the city and its population from disappearing in a titanic explosion of flames, thus showing once again his devotion to want to serve and protect the people first. Davos does not want to see the horror of the Battle of the Nera again, but on a much worse scale. Eventually, the small group finally reaches the wildfire cache, where are standing in line in dusty shelves the hundreds and hundreds of jars containing the terrible alchemical mixture. With astonishment, they discover that nothing has finally been prepared and that the pyromancers have deserted the place leaving behind their equipment. But for Melisandre, nothing seems to change in her mind and she turns to Varys. _ "It is time for you to fulfill your destiny .... Varys Blackfyre." The master spy remains marble at the mention of this name so special, guessing without a problem that the priestess knew from the beginning. Tyrion and Davos exchange a more than bewildered look at this. _ "What ... how did you call him?" Davos asks the priestess. _"I don't need to hide it any longer, because indeed, my name is Varys from house Blackfyre." Tyrion and Davos remain speechless, believing that the Blackfyres, that bastard branch of Targaryen House, had long since disappeared. _ "But ... what destiny are you talking about?" Tyrion continues in the interrogation. Varys and Melisandre exchange a look. _"No need to deny it more, Lord Varys ..." said Melisandre, coming in front of him and touching his cheek with her hand "... remember that night, this ritual where your cock and balls were thrown into the flames. ... and that voice that emerged, addressing you .... You know just like me who it was, is not it?" Varys is divided between fear and the belief that she says true. He had never been able to forget this ritual, the pain of castration and the supernatural voice that had come from the brazier .... He knew it from now on. R'hllor had addressed him, entrusting him with a very special mission that he would accomplish only years later. _ "The blood flowing in your veins, Varys Blackfyre, is a bearer of great power, such was the decision of the lord of the light when he addressed you that night .... and it is today that this power will be used for the benefit of all." For Melisandre, it is out of the question to prevent the explosion of the wildfire. On the contrary, only an explosion of this magnitude could be enough to completely eradicate the army of the dead and the white walkers in one fell swoop. Davos draws his sword and threatens the priestess. _ "Burning a little living girl was not enough for you? You want to see the capital disappear in the flames, you witch?" Varys, however, retains the hand of Ser Davos. _"Lady Melisandre is right. You and Lord Tyrion had to warn as many people as possible, and evacuate by sea. Take the ships by force if necessary, but leave the city as soon as possible!" Melisandre observes without saying anything but thanks Varys for the support. Tyrion and Davos then understand that a destiny beyond them is at work before their eyes. Although hesitant to abandon a valuable friend like Varys, Tyrion vigorously shakes his hand in a last goodbye. _ "For an eunuch, you have the biggest of all." said the dwarf in a failed attempt at humor, which nevertheless makes the spy master smile. _"I think I'll miss your jokes about eunuchs, sir ... good luck." he answers. After this farewell, almost tearing Tyrion away, he and Davos run off to save as many people as possible, while Melisandre and Varys stay by the wildfire. ************ In the bay, the naval battle continues fiercely, and Yara's army seems to take more and more advantage, many of Euron's ships having fallen into their hands after violent clashes. On the flagship littered with many corpses and the bridge impregnated with blood, Yara, whose face soiled by dirt and blood, is facing her uncle, also bearing the traces of the fight on his enraged face. _"Well, my dear niece, can I know where Little Theon is? Is he hiding like the little coward he is? Unless he is already buried six feet underground? as you will be soon too!" Remembering that she had learned with great sadness about Theon's death by Sansa's letter, and enraged by Euron's words, Yara is left dominated by anger and it is in a scream that she launches herself into attack, assaulting a first blow that Euron blocked easily. The duel between the two Greyjoys begins in the midst of the brutal battles between the crewmen. Dominated by a new rage, Yara leaves no respite to her uncle, making him back off while he dodges or blocks with more or less difficulty the many blows of ax she tries to give. But Yara does not pay enough attention to her defense and her leg is slightly slashed by a well-placed attack from Euron. Clenching her teeth against the pain, Yara pursues the duel without flinching. _"Not bad, you have at least more balls than your stupid brother!" continues Euron in deliberate and cruel provocation. _"SHUT UP!!" yells Yara while continuing her frontal attack. A well-placed blow slashes Euron's right shoulder, which lets out a growl of pain, a trickle of blood flowing over his fabric, redoubling his effort to defeat his tenacious niece. This time, Yara must retreat under the repeated assaults of her uncle, and a kick in the bump makes her fall to the ground, and lose her ax that slips further. A ironborn soldier who saw his captain in danger, rushed at Euron, but he killed him with a violent blow of an ax in the neck. Yara takes advantage of this moment of diversion to grab a piece of broken wood and plants it with all her strength in Euron's neck, through his throat. Uncle Greyjoy freezes, drowning in his own blood and falls to the ground, at Yara's feet, panting, wounded and victorious. It is without regret that Yara, with the tip of her foot, pushes the lifeless body of her uncle, letting him to fall into the water, and disappear into the opacity of the depths of the bay as a treat for fish and crabs. ********* In the throne room, Sandor rushes without hesitation on his brother Gregor in a roar like a wild beast. The swords of the two Clegane brothers collide in a screech of steel. Brienne having seen Jaime seriously wounded on the ground, must struggle to repel a new group of guards, but she is finally assisted by Bronn who managed to recover. The swords clash between the Clegane brothers is continuing with a force and brutality out of the ordinary, Sandor inflicts heavy injuries on his brother but still ineffective against the latter. Provided with his strength and his superhuman resistance, Gregor quickly takes the advantage and a stinging response, made knee to the ground to his little brother. But Sandor, galvanized by the thirst for revenge, throws all his weight against his brother, causing him to fall to the ground. A violent wrestling starts between the two Cleganes. Disarmed, they come to the hand ... punches, kicks fuse, but again, Gregor takes the advantage, succeeding in stunning Sandor by giving him several headbutts .... The Hound founds himself in four paws, dizzy and spitting a trickle of blood from his mouth. Gregor stands up, dominating his brother and picks up his sword to decapitate him. But suddenly, the small group finds itself facing a white walker alone, who finishes killing a Lannister soldier. The monster then focuses on them and advances with a confident step. He targets Tyrion closer, but Podrick throws himself with his weight at the creature, pushing him back. _ "PODRICK!!" exclaims Tyrion with horror, retained by Davos. _ "Save yourself, sir!!" the young squire exclaims as he is caught to the throat by the white walker and thrown violently against the wall of a house. Tyrion refuses to give him up, but Davos heavily insists and drives him away with him and the locals, time is running out more than anything. Tyrion then sees Podrick cast a last sure look at him, the squire not regretting in any way his gesture. Podrick breathes his last breath as the blade of the white walker pierces his body, nailing him to the wall of the house. Forcibly taken by Davos, Tyrion lets out a scream of despair, as the squire's lifeless body falls to the feet of the white walker.
