I get that “best little whorehouse in Texas” was considered very progressive for its time (and today) for its portrayal of sex workers and arguing for decriminalizing in person sex work.

However, the more I think about it the more inaccurate and sanitized a portrayal of sex work it seems. At least from what I remember. The cast of the movie was almost all white, cis-het, and Dolly Parton even sings a song about how she doesn’t want the prostitutes who work for her to drink or even have tattoos????

This obviously doesn’t accurately acknowledge that most prostitutes are WOC, most of them are queer people, and there is also a huge issue of drug abuse in the sex trade. There is also very little violence in the movie which doesn’t accurately portray the epidemic of violence against sex workers.

I’m not saying you can’t like the movie, but not all sex workers are clean cut, cis-het, sober, blonde, white women with cutesy southern accents and no tattoos 🙄.

I should clarify that I personally have no direct experience with sex work I just have some friends who are. Any movie that takes place in Texas should probably have more Latin American characters. I guess this is what happens when you try to make sex work appeal to conservative, white, republican, cis-het, Dolly Parton fans.

Instead of bashing women who do Onlyfans/sex work, men should criticize the industry itself.

Not to mention the MEN who consume OF content and keep them in business. Misogynistic men are so quick to criticize "OF thots," not realizing that they wouldn't exist if there wasn't a DEMAND for their product!

Also, men do OF, too, but no one attacks them for it. (example, when Markiplier announced his OF no one got mad about it and it was just a funny haha thing, whereas if a female YouTuber did the same thing, she'd be burned at the stake)

I 110% agree that the industry itself is terrible, but being upset at sex workers (mainly the women) for making money on OF and just going out of your way to bash sex workers in general is cringe.

Also, the majority of dudes who shit on sex workers probably watch porn. You can't disrespect someone for providing a service you directly benefit from. That's like insulting fast food workers and then going to McDonald's.

Hate the INDUSTRY, not the INDIVIDUALS.

You can really tell when someone hasn’t had contact with the average hand-to-mouth, gig-to-gig sex worker. “A sex worker’s client is half the fucking job” mhm and most sex workers do not like johns and wish they didn’t have to rely on them for money to live. Low contact, video only sex work is not the common denominator in this industry. A fraction of a percent of sex workers are wealthy enough to live well and not have to perform. And those tend to be the most popular ones who feed on and feed into sexual trends, which trickle down to effect struggling sex workers who have less agency. Because, again, 99% of sex workers aren’t Mia Khalifa and Belle Delphine. They are young, poor, and without any ability to dictate trends or their job outcome. Class consciousness means we must be conscious of how class stratification affects all forms of labor. The most visible, influential, and unaffected will continue to lead their respective industries until they are questioned. Despite this other side of this argument (from what I’ve seen) claiming communism there seems to be a strange Democracy of the Dollar undercurrent to this argument. That this arrangement and its machinations are just because there is a buyer continuing to supply demand, and if we criticize the “buyers” we are harming “suppliers”. In our current circumstances, sex work is stigmatized because it is seen as a criminal act that both the john and worker partake in. It is individualized as a social evil effecting only those who are involved. Pulling back the scope to show how this exchange is socially informed and how that can ultimately harm workers across multiple exchanges does not create the same stigma. It can, surprisingly, lead to beneficial changes for both parties. While I wish sex workers would not need to perform under coercion, I believe in harm reduction over prohibition and that doesn’t mean “no holds barred” on what can be considered ok and not. It means everyone has to change their mindset for the betterment of those who can’t choose, even if it means it’s a little harder for you to get your rocks off however and whenever you want.

Sober thoughts🫂

The other day during a phonecall, my friend brings up a point about desirability. We're both afabs in our mid 20s, me a nonbinary, her a genderfluid woman. She talks about this study of desirability and dating apps, how as women age they tend to stay in their age range with potential suitors with some venturing a bit younger. As men age they search for younger almost inevitably. In bringing up this topic I could tell she was troubled by this (I guess I am too?).

It seems like for afabs you spend a lifetime in your youth warding off unwanted attention. Some conceptualize power

by leaning into the lust and others find power in shielding. As a swer I've done both, as a bigender I've tried both. A lifetime of figuring it all out. Then you're old(er). You've got the rhythm of life and you feel beautiful in it, but the men come around less frequently. I wonder if that's true, and if so does it really scare me? Should it? As a queer nonbinary person I'm limitless in finding and receiving love and desire. But in gender and queerness there's still a root of socialization to unpack. We still don't fully understand gender if at all. How will I know if I've broken free?
