Palia Tips
Some things I have learned that might help others. 🩵
Game Controls
You can put away your tool by pressing X.
If you get stuck, type /unstuck in the chat window and you’ll be teleported to the nearest stable surface.
Right clicking with a tool equipped will let you switch between different types of ammo (for bug catching and hunting).
You can cancel without wasting ammo after entering "aim" mode by pressing the Shift key or right mouse button (h/t @sharky857 ).
You can climb ivy in addition to cliffs. (Like inside the lighthouse..!)
You can cancel climbing/drop from a cliff face by clicking X. (h/t @lazyadmiral )
You can jump (space bar) while climbing cliffs to climb faster.
You can hold down the mouse key when mining, tilling, and chopping down trees rather than clicking for each chop.
Camera & Photos
Press K to enter camera mode.
There’s a 🔁 button in the corner if you want to swap to a front-facing camera/“selfie mode”.
If you want to see your photos while in the game, you have to save them to the album. However all photos taken, even if you don’t do that step, will be saved to your computer’s hard drive.
To find your photos, open Windows Explorer and enter %appdata% in the location bar. From there navigate to %AppData%/Local/Palia/Saved/Screenshots. You should be able to pin this folder to your quick nav/favorites to find it again easily.
Time
One hour of real time = one entire day in Palia. That means an hour in Palia passes in only 2.5 minutes of play.
You only get "credit" (for building friendships) for chatting with villagers once per villager per day.
Many bugs, fish, and plants can only be found at certain times. Time in Palia is divided into: ‣ Morning: 3-6am (rooster crows at 3) ‣ Day: 6am-6pm ‣ Evening: 6pm-9pm ‣ Night: 9pm-3am (owl hoots at 9)
Time in Palia is the same across all servers. Midnight (a new day) will always be on the hour in real world time, so 6am in Palia is at X:15, noon is at X:30, and 6pm is at X:45.
6am is a "new day" for crops, but midnight is a "new day" for chatting with villagers. Midnight also seems to be when the furniture in Tish’s shop refreshes.
Gifting runs on real world time, not Palia time. You can only give a villager one gift every 24 hours in the real world, and "Weekly Wants" are valid for one real world week. The week currently resets on Mondays at 12am Eastern.
Once you get a villager's key, you can talk to and visit them even when they are "asleep".
Mail is delivered and picked up (shipping bin sales) at 6am and 6pm.
To find rare spawns, arrive in the area 15-30 Palia minutes before the start of its catch period and clear all the common critters/plants. This will make it more likely your rare will spawn when the clock chimes.
Inventory & House
Furniture does not take up inventory space!!
A gold star on an item's icon means it's "star quality." Starred items fetch higher sales prices and are required for some quests.
Starred items will not stack with normal items.
Only star quality food can be placed in your house/lot.
More storage chests = more storage slots, but you are capped at 8.
You can hang items on the exterior walls of your home - including wallpaper!!
When in placement mode, you can rotate items using Q and E. You can turn off “grid mode” by pressing z, which allows more flexible item placement.
Leveling
Your character level is a combination of your level in each of your skills.
Eating food increases your "focus," which applies a percentage bonus that will make you level faster.
You can increase that bonus by visiting the Dragon and Phoenix shrines and spending Renown to increase the percentage (Phoenix Shrine) and the amount of focus you can accumulate.
You can only "carry" 1,000 Renown at any time. If you're not spending it, you're throwing away Exp.
Renown is also needed to expand your housing plot (by buying "Writs").
Event
You can get "displayable" food from Reth and Delaila, but it's based on RNG. Just keep buying the item until you get a star quality one.
The quickest way to get Chapaa Chase tickets is by completing the Achievements; some require you to party with others.
The drums are not obvious, but you only need to go back and forth between a pair of them interacting as they light up. Eventually the big fireworks will trigger and you will get the achievement and reward. (Do this 2 more times for the second achievement!)
The event achievements are on the Event tab, not the achievements one.
Skill-Specific Tips
Fishing: If you don’t click in time and the fish disappears, don’t panic — the same fish will keep trying again! And if you change your mind, you can pull your line in/cancel and you won’t spend any bait. This means you can wait to be sure you’ve hooked the fish you want before reeling it in so you don’t waste all your precious glow worms! The one caveat is that sparkle pools (and the guaranty of a star quality catch) disappear if you don’t catch the fish on the first nibble.
Hunting: The Proudhorn Sernuk can teleport and the Azure Chapaa can make an illusion of copies of itself that disappear when shot. They're both very difficult to hunt until you learn to make Dispel arrows. If you’re still struggling to have enough resources for everything, learn the lowest quality arrow that can kill something in one shot and hunt with those. (Kilima chapaa can be killed with a makeshift arrow while regular Kilima sernuk require a standard arrow. Bahari chapaa need at least a standard arrow while elder sernuk in Bahari will cost you several fine arrows.)
Looting: For hunting, mining, and chopping down trees, everyone who gets one "hit" in gets loot, and the loot is not diminished by sharing. So working together to find pallium nodes or hunt rare critters rewards everyone. :) (Note that you need to have the required equipment quality to be able to share, though - if you get a message saying “sorry, you need to upgrade your equipment” then you won’t get any loot.)
Mining: On the topic of Palium, it’s not as rare as you think. It has very specific spawn points, which it only shares with stone - you’ll never find palium where you found iron before. This means you should mine all the stone sharing those points to encourage palium to spawn for your next visit. Palium can be found in the caves hidden around the perimeter of Bahari and in the Pavel mines.
Foraging: Purple glowing trees are flow trees, and require more than one player to chop them down. Again, everyone gets "full" loot, no matter how many people get a swing in. For small trees, let them heal after each hit if needed to make sure everyone present can get a hit. If you’re looking for a specific resource, say, sweet leaf, look up what it shares spawn points with (in this case, morels) and pick three as well so sweet leaf has a chance to spawn. Also, brightshrooms are typically found in ruins right up against the structures so they can be easy to overlook or mistake for glowing bugs at night.
Cooking: You can find recipes in villager's homes, by fishing them up in bottles, lying around the wilderness, and completing quests or bundles in addition to buying them from Reth.
Cooking together: Like with looting, everyone gets the full reward, even if you don't contribute any ingredients.
Lore & Fun Stuff
There is a mysterious beast in the Elderwoods.
The mine's haunted.
Sooo much queer rep: All the romanceable characters don’t care about the player’s “body type.” Sifuu, the Duchess (Kenyara), and Eshe are canonically wlw. Chayne was raised by two dads. The former lighthouse keepers in Bahari Bay were a gay couple. 🏳️‍🌈
Critters that have been mentioned but don't have in-game models or released concept art yet so we just have to speculate: ‣ Kitsuu: Sacred companions, according to Hassian. There is a kitsuu constellation which has "floppy ears" and horns. Possibly the "fennec fox with antlers" creature drawn in the Vault of the Waves? (Confirmed by the official Discord emotes!) No longer unreleased as of 0.3.6. :) ‣ Peki: Palian version of chickens, or at least they lay eggs and have feathers, and according to Nai’o “there are at least 72 unique color and pattern combinations for peki breeds.” ‣ Riffroc: Palian mounts. Nai'o has a beloved one named Sugarfoot; Kenyatta’s is named Sundrop.

*whispers* Mods are asleep, post F bombs.
Bonus point: a little bit of in-depth musing under the cut.
Sifuu: Doesn't give two 💩💩 about who's around her. Whether you're ready or not, F bombs fly like mosquitoes in summer. If Hassian made her keep a swearing jar, they would be richer than the local family of Magistrates.
Hodari: Much like Sifuu, he too would say the F-bomb every other word. Unlike Sifuu, he tried to cut down on F bombs the day little Najuma entered his life. Unfortunately for Hodari, this didn't stop Najuma from picking up "bombs", also of the "F" kind.
Reth: Probably scolded as a child by his parents for using "bad words" in front of his little sister. This never really stopped him from using said "bad words".
Zeki & Hassian: They might or might not be kinda lying when they say that they used to say "F words" but not anymore. Hassian might or might not be also the one dropping the most, out of the two.
Kenyatta: She's more of the "regularly say the thing" kind of Majiri. But alas her front desk work + the presence of her parents prevents her from saying them out loud. Her "swearing off" is actually a fat lie.
Tau: If dogs could talk, Tau would go for the F bomb whenever needed.
Badruu: He may have fallen under the "can say the thing if so desired" in his youth, but he's been utterly refusing to say it ever since his first son was born. If he feels an F bomb incoming, he might try to mask it under one of his veggie-themed dad jokes. Example: "WHAT THE FLYING FFF-IG?!"
Eshe & Jel: They simply find any sort of vulgar cuss word "uncouth".
Chayne: Guy's just way too chill to drop an F bomb, even accidentally.
Auni: Has been forbidden from cursing multiple times by both his parents, hence why it counts as "legally cannot say the thing". This, however, doesn't mean that he might not say said "thing", especially when far away from prying ears.
Hekla: She was built to look after children. Absolutely no cussing around children! She's still sticking to this directive to this day. Might also virtually clutch her pearls in horror when she hears "her Jina" drop the smallest F bomb.

The market is back and better than last time! I think Kenli might be getting the hang of this.
So, okay, there's the chappa chase, and I really want to know who started that up again because good grief. Oh well, it's fun, and it's a game now, apparently!
I almost wonder if Kenli trained the chappa...
Zeki got his booth this time! He has some food for sale, and a lucky wheel to spin. Also a pretty flimsy story about not believing in wishes, but I will wait a few days and see if he decides to tell me himself.
Oh, who'm I kidding? Every day is Bother Zeki Day, and he hasn't tried to maul me yet, so I think I can get away with pushing him a little on this. He looked so sad! Like, I get that wishes are kind of... unrealistic at times. But that's the fun of them, getting to dream and hope. (Auni's wish cracked me up. Child, you'll grow, but you're not growing yet. Don't be in such a rush. Also, Kenyatta, you're a healer, no going pirate allowed.)
Anyways, There was a bunch of new foods, and something called a hotpot that was apparently also a card game. I didn't get to play much, the Chappa Chase caught me off guard while I was listening to the rules, but I'll give it another go later.
Also?
Tumblr media
Jel styled me fantastic~ I would like more feminine colors, but this? This is awesome and I adore it~
And being fair, it's hard to chase chappa in a skirt. I remember trying that in the first Maji Market and regularly eating shit, so pants or leggings are definitely the way to go!
Chayne explained the Luna New Year, and the lucky envelopes, but... I dunno, something about his explanation felt sideways. Maybe it's more of those forgotten memories poking at me again, stuff I should know but I don't. Still, I like it. It's a sweet tradition, hanging wishes on a tree, and sending lanterns floating off into the sky.
I did spend time with Jel at the market. He seemed almost manically inspired though, so I did end up walking away for a bit to talk to Hodari and Najuma. They were both happy to see me, and I got to encourage Naj to join Uncle B and the rest for some hot pot. I mean, I didn't tell her she should, I just asked what was holding her back, and she decided to go all on her own.
Help, I love this village so much~
Oh, and Kenyatta also told me about some new cosmetic house stuff, like new roofs and bigger windows! I definitely need bigger windows, but I don't know where to put them... Maybe I'll see if Hodari or Dad can help me build one, just to see how it'll look. Once I've got that, I can figure it out on my own, but it helps to have help first.
Tumblr media
I really like my new roofs~
Oh, and Hodari said he was going to open up some space behind the house, a rockfall had blocked the way to an old mine. So I went off to do some stuff in the village, and when I got back, he was all done!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's nothing in it, which is a little disappointing, but honestly, it's pretty cool to see. Maybe if I dig around in it a bit, I'll find something worth bragging about.
Or maybe I won't, but who knows?
I picked up some new seeds from Auntie Dal at the market, so soon I'll have even more crops to rotate in and out of the garden. Reth also has new recipes for sale at the market...
I wonder what would happen if they let Tish have a booth?
I need to rest now, it's been a long, exciting day and I did entirely too much~

Hi !
Hope you're having a great day
I just saw your post about a beta reader for a fic with Reth ?
I also realized it was posted a little over a month ago so I wanted to ask if you're still looking for one ?
Or maybe if you aren't, if the fanfic is out yet ? (Would love to read it)
Have a nice day ! :D
Oh hi sweetie <3
Yes I am absolutely still looking. I got someone helping me with the fanfic but she's more like my teacher than a beta read, so yes, I am very much still looking for someone to read through it and give me some feedback. Just a heads up though, it's...gotten a bit out of hand and it's quite long now haha I am still not finished either. But if you're still interested, you can definitely hit me off anon and we can talk <3

Tell me I'm okay.
I need you to look me on the eyes, since you're telling me that's the reason you love me. If that's why you felt and stayed in love, I need to know. Do you really understand why I can get jealous ? I believe that you don't. If you're falling for those eyes, you could fall for so much more. The hair, the mouth, the smile or the body of anyone. You don't look for a spiritual mind, a clever woman. You don't care about my interests or what I'm made of. You don't see how brave I can be, how fierce I am deep inside. You don't care about what I don't want to talk about. You don't ask if I am happy. What m'y dreams are made of. You're never there for me when I need you. When I am crying in the corner, running away from you. It doesn't matter because you are not mature and in love "enough" to care about another human being. I guess that you didn't chose me for my eyes. You chose me because I'm caring, loving, I pay attention. You don't have to talk for me to notice what you feel. I see your failures and who you really are, through my eyes. Through my love. Because when I love, I love trully and deeply. I want to help you feel better, to help you being a better person, to yourself and to your loved ones. For us too. So look at me now, and tell me. Tell me I am fine. Tell me you won't take everything to yourself. Tell me you won't leave me because you can't take me for who I am, and not what I am bringing you according to what you're expecting me to do for you. Tell me I'm fine and that you are seing me. That you are trying. That you're not just taking from me. Tell me and show me that you fell in love with me and not somebody else. Tell me who I am to you. Think. Ask yourself the question. Show me your love. Not because you like the idea of being in a relationship or just not alone. Not because you love that I give you so much almost effortlessly sometimes and that you sée that you don't do anything in return. Make me lie. Make me rething all of that. Make me see that you're in love with me. Me and not another person. That you love me, not just a pretty face, long hair, uncovered legs, a sweet or a hot girl you want to date or to have for the night. I am not a new beautiful barbie doll you can show to everyone of your loved ones so you can compare her to the last one. So you can show that you always will find "better". Tell me you're not selfish. Tell me you're not blind. Sing this chorus of yours where you are saying how you love the way we communicate when you will only find the way to hide me everything wrong from me. Tell me you're afraid to lose me as long as I am the idea you have of me, while you see and perceive who I am. I am not hiding. I am not lying. I respect you. Tell me you do the same. Tell me you love me for everything I trully am. Tell me I'm fine just the way I am. Tell me I am the one. Tell me everything will be fine. Oh, yes, you will. With just a few words and those already broken promises. You will do that, without saying anything. I see the best in you. So I will let you do all of those things. Because I care. Too much.
At least, I used to. I have no regret about everything that happened. Because I don't know who I would be today otherwise. I am happy of being me. I love who I am so much. I have respect for me. And all of those things taught me so much. Too much. I know what my worth is and I guess I loved you too hard to not be affected that much. I won't thank you, because of so many things. You are no good for me and if I am going through love again, I will do my best to find the one who will be sure that everything is fine. That he would know why je loves me. That he figures out who I am. That he's my mirror. I need and I deserve that. Maybe I won't be able to find the one. But I am not going back on this chaotic rollercoaster again. You don't have to tell me that I'm fine. Because I love myself and I know my worth. I can do it myself. I know we'll never know. But I'll do my best. I deserve it.

Character Introduction: Eltari Reth
Tumblr media
Name: Eltari Reth
Pronouns: She/her — but anything works.
Age: Somewhere between 1000 and 36, but that depends on which part of her you're talking about.
D&D Race and Class: Kalashtar (human), Druid of the Circle of Spores.
Setting: Homebrew.
"Don't be afraid: death is just another phase of being! Have you considered the Oneness of all things?"
Eltari Reth appears to be a normal human woman of 35 or 36 years old. She is tidy and attractive, with silver-shot black hair tied in a braided crown, and a uniform of unmarked violet-grey vestments attached with a hazy purple sash around her waist. Along the edge of the sash she has attached various trinkets: an acorn, a bundle of sharpened twigs, a sumac leaf, a bit of wool.
It is easy to befriend Eltari. She is cheerful and outgoing, curious about the world, and a little naive. She approaches all strangers as potential friends, and often asks them what their opinion is on the "oneness of all things." Or at least, she used to. But Eltari Reth has learned much about the world in the past few months.
She has been travelling with Mareth of Green Pastures, a Tiefling Bard, whom she affectionately calls "Bruce," because "a new phase of being should be honoured with a new name." Eltari has a habit of naming all dead things she comes across "Bruce," and Mareth isn't sure what to think of that. But lately she seems to have taken to calling him "Mareth." Maybe their relationship has changed somewhat, or maybe Eltari, finally free of her temple, is finally growing up.
Eltari is not a normal human. She comes from a reclusive community known as the Temple of the Circle of Spores, deep in the mountains. Her people prize balance, seeking to balance light and dark, good and evil, male and female, life and death. They view mushrooms as the ideal organism, straddling the line between all of these dichotomies. To help balance their own selves, Eltari's people developed a curious custom of binding the souls of their dead to the souls of their children.
But Eltari's fused spirit was forgotten. For hundreds of years, he languished, until the elders of her temple discovered the oversight and hastily bound him to Eltari. Perhaps that's why, where her people are known for their calm, unemotional demeanours, Eltari is cheerful and excitable, her eyes often glowing with the intensity of her emotions and excess spiritual energy. Reth inhabits Eltari's body, but he also animates a symbiotic halo of fungal spores, constantly swirling around her. When she's sad, Reth settles onto her shoulders and glows gently, a kind of hug or self-soothing behaviour.
Although she is odd, Eltari was chosen to become a druid of her temple. As such she commands natural and necromantic magics. She insists that "death is just another phase of being!" But when the Found defeated a sea hag and discovered that she had been torturing and murdering locals to create undead abominations with their remains, she was forced to reevaluate her relationship with death.
After this experience, Reth managed to separate his spirit and Eltari's long enough to have a conversation with her while she meditated. Although he was not able to recollect specifics about his life, or his name before he was Reth, he did remember one thing: he was murdered by a former member of the temple. And that murderer is still alive.
Now, together with her friends the Found, Eltari is searching for her own murderer, training so she can stop him from bringing about something terrible. Meanwhile, she needs to cope with the terrible thing she did that got her ejected from the temple and find a way to right her own wrongs.
Of course, if something happens to her friends, there's always a chance Eltari might give in to the darker side of her nature and turn her necromantic magics to more violent ends...

What is sleep? FOR THE WEAK!
Look, when you have to get up stupidly early to try and catch fish, you generally just tend to say fuckit and stay up all night. At least, you do if you're me! But I have completed the Silvering constellation thing, and I feel... like something got missed.
But you know what, it's done, and dealt with, and I can figure it out later when I'm not so loopy on lack of sleep that Hodari of all people had to put me to bed.
In my defense, I was gonna go, and then Auni delivered a letter from him that said he was going to be at the Wave temple, and he wanted to share lunch! I'm not entirely sure if we're a couple yet, but...
Free food.
So I figured why not, I'll go say hi and see how he's doing with the survey thing, and get some lunch, and hang out for a while, tell him, you know, how wild it was to wake this temple up.
Because it kind of was.
Turns out, Hodari was so excited to see if I'd show up, he forgot the lunch. Which, frankly, is adorable no matter what he thinks. (He claims it's ridiculous, I think it's cute, we're just not gonna agree on that.) It wasn't a total loss though, There's mushrooms and fish, and while I'm honestly not a fan of fish, it was better than nothing, and kind of fun to gather things up and let someone else do the cooking for a change. (Jel burns water, and Hassian eyes my kitchen stuff like it's going to bite him. No, I do not know how Jel burns water, but there's definitely a reason why Reth brings him food every day.)
Honestly, the best part has been the fact that Hodari insisted I come home and nap, saw me home and everything, and then once he'd left, Najuma popped in and asked me if he'd given me a thing yet. Given that I wasn't all sure it was a date, I was a little confused until Naj pointed to the pins I have for Hassian and Jel.
Which, uh... Admittedly, it's probably time to see about making one? Because I do like him, and Jel and Hassian have no problems with him, and clearly Najuma is on my side with the whole utter exasperation she was fielding when I told her that no, I didn't have Hodari's pin. Legit asked what he thought he was doing, and yanno...
When you have the kid's approval for something like this? You're doing all right, I think.
But she said she was going to bug him about it, which is Concerning, but I don't think I can talk her out of it. So I might have a third pin soon.
I have almost decided what to do with my house. I just need to save up a bit more money to get a large room (I'm upgrading my bedroom) and another harvest house (for a guest house), and then I just have to smack some trees.
Dad suggested I could make a workshop, if I was floundering for ideas, and that could be fun too, but most everything I have still fits in the tent that was home for a bit before I had the money for the house. So I'm not entirely sure if I want to do that or not. But no matter what, it's gonna be a big project that'll probably take several days.
Maybe I should ask Tish for ideas. And I'll need help from Einar again, to get stuff down from way up high... Hm...
...oh right. I'm supposed to be sleeping. Time to do that before a certain thiefy palcat runs off with my pen.
Again.

I told Tish I was ready for her help in making my workshop, and man.
Whirlwind Tish!
Tumblr media
She insisted, since I have smelters indoors, that the whole thing was to be made of stone. No exceptions. I like the look of it~
Tumblr media
Gave me the picture herself when I said this whole area was built with her in mind. She's not my type (She has way too much energy and I prefer my datemates Chill), but it was a sweet thing. Also finally found a place to put the ormu horn mount Dad gave me!
Tumblr media
Behind the screen is a mini bathroom. That way no one has to run to the guest house to pee.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I put porches on either side of the place, just to make easy exit points no matter where you are. That felt very important. (Tish seemed impressed by that. It feels like basic safety to me...)
Tumblr media
This side is the noisy side of the workshop. Also the warmest. I don't actually use the repair anvil that much (I prefer to pay Sifuu to do it for me, what with all her experience), but Tish said it fit perfectly into the aesthetic, so I put it out. I need to fix my glass maker and set that out too, eventually...
Tumblr media
This is the quieter crafting stuff. The loom, the decorating table, and the main build point of the workshop. Again, this set up was Tish's idea.
Maybe I should move Einar's net thing to a different spot...
Tumblr media
Tish dubbed this the 'You've worked too hard and can't make it to bed' corner. And then promptly passed out on the lounge for two hours. I had to get Reth to take her home. Even with that flower hairpin making her stronger, she still has moments like that.
Tumblr media
This last bit I did myself, mostly because having a snack table in a place where you're using so much energy makes sense to me. Also kind of why I stuck a plate of sweets and a cup of water over in the 'crash corner' of the 'shop.

I later got this from Zeki's Lucky Box thing, and I swear it reminds me of a story. Something about a cursed prince, an enchanted rose, and something about love?
It's a pretty flower if nothing else, and maybe I'll remember more if it hangs out in my house. Or maybe I could go bug Caleri about it; she's the librarian, maybe she'll know what she's talking about.
And besides, I found her missing lucky quill!
Which was definitely a weird find, all things considered. People have been swearing that there's interesting stuff in the chappa burrows, so I've been trying to remember to check them out, and this time I got something really interesting. It was a fancy little pen!
While I know everyone in the village can read and write, it just made me thing Librarian, so I brought it to Caleri, teased her a bit, and she gave me one of my own! I think it was mostly to make me go away, but still.
I put it in my temple, next to the illuminated script she gave me. I'll take pictures next time, I've added some new things to the temple and I should document that for the future!

Also, Najuma came through for me again. No idea how she does it, but that aerial view is amazing and I appreciate her for it.
