📽️ Along for the Ride (2022)

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I thought it was going to be like To All the Boys I Loved Before (which I liked but didn’t love), but it wasn’t really. I’ve never read the book which apparently was an advantage because a lot of people who read the book weren’t fans of the movie. It’s not like this was anything earth-shattering or life-changing. It was your typical coming-of-age, first love story. It was sweet and easy to watch.

Sex/nudity: 2/10 (swimsuits, kissing)

Language: 3/10 (a little bit of most things, at least one f-word)

Violence: 0/10 (I don’t remember any)

Overall rating: 7/10

Sha Na Na, with Donny York on lead vocals, performing I Wonder Why in 1973.

It was originally a hit in 1958 for Dion and the Belmonts (UK viewers will probably also be familiar with the Showaddywaddy cover from 1976). It was written by Melvin Anderson and Ricardo Weeks who, as far as I can tell, didn't write any other hit singles. Probably didn't need to after writing this.

Unfortunately as this was in the days of square CRT TV's we don't get the full Sha Na Na choreographed experience with Joff, tall chap with moustache, on the right cut out of many of the shots. Great version of the song all the same.

EL EFECTO BELMONT [OPINIÓN]

El candidato a la alcaldía de Lima Ricardo Belmont ha sido noticia en la semana, pero no precisamente por sus propuestas sino por sus declaraciones crispadas -y otras alborotadas- sobre la llegada de venezolanos al Perú.

Las palabras de Belmont fueron contundentes: <“Nos hemos vuelto más papistas que el papa”>. Y en efecto. En los últimos días, muchos periodistas y personajes televisivos han evocado a la solidaridad y ya son varios los programas que difunden reportajes tristes sobre los llaneros.

Existe hoy una necesidad de los medios de comunicación para que el peruano sienta una pena que nunca antes había sentido (ni por sus compatriotas que viven en las heladas de Puno, la trata de personas en la Selva o la desnutrición de los niños en Cuzco, por mencionar algunos casos).

Belmont ha sabido aprovechar bien el descontento popular, porque hay que aceptarlo y decirlo como es: un buen porcentaje de electores no quiere a los venezolanos. Aquellos que trabajan en la calle son los que más sienten la arribada de extranjeros a la ciudad. ¿Xenofobia? Si, claro. Ya que el peruano común (no el que tiene un buen auto o está como asalariado en una empresa) muchas veces no es tolerante ni consigo mismo.

Hace mucho que los medios dejaron de tener el respaldo ciudadano. Después del congreso, la prensa es la que más desaprobación tiene. Cómo dice el buen Deyvis Orosco: “No te creas tan importante”. El efecto Belmont ha sido un disparo a los pies.
