quando: sábado, 21 de janeiro.

Riley não é uma pessoa comunicativa ou simpática na visão de desconhecidos, mas, na última semana, essas suas características estavam à todo vapor ao ponto de se tornar um pouco estranho para seus amigos mais próximos do colégio. Todos recebiam respostas vazias ou desculpas esfarrapadas de que “estava preocupada com os últimos meses de aula” (o que também era verdade), porém o real motivo para seu isolamento intensificado era de conhecimento de pouquíssimos: seu aniversário estava chegando.

Já fazia longos anos em que o dia 21 de janeiro deixou de ser especial para a Navarro, mas não por ter crescido e a ideia de ganhar mais anos na conta lhe deixarem amarga, e sim por ser a exata data em seu pai a abandonou. Era torturante dividir seu aniversário com um momento tão traumático e sua ansiedade sempre falava mais alto quando a data se aproximava — bem que o maldito poderia ter esperado uns dois ou três dias para fugir, não? Riley só conseguia sentir raiva e tristeza. Não queria festas, não queria bolo, não queria nada. Seu desejo era passar por aquela data como se fosse outra qualquer, porém não era idiota e sabia muito bem que Jade iria planejar algo para não deixar em branco. E o maior problema disso é que a garota estava desgastada demais para cair na armadilha. Logo, seu plano mudou de “ficar trancada no quarto o dia todo” para “sair com o namorado”. Sentia-se um pouco culpada por não compartilhar aquele detalhe de sua vida com @thedicklee, afinal, que tipo de namorados não falavam sobre seus aniversários? Mas tudo o que Riley queria era se distrair de todos os pensamentos distorcidos que inundavam sua cabeça e estar perto dele sempre se mostrou ser a solução perfeita.

Com a mochila pronta desde a noite anterior, Riley só precisou trocar de roupa e pegar algumas comidas que havia preparado e seu skate antes de acelerar os passos para fora do apartamento. Era óbvio que a garota fugia de Jade e de qualquer “feliz aniversário” que surgiria assim que se esbarrassem pelo minúsculo apartamento — e óbvio também que a mulher percebeu. “Divirta-se e não chegue muito tarde” foi a única coisa que pôde dizer antes de ter a porta principal fechada em sua cara.

Avistando o carro de Dick estacionado, Riley estava afobada pela pressa de sair daquele bairro tão familiar, pois encontrar conhecidos também significava receber as felicitações indesejadas, então foi bastante breve na hora de entrar no veículo e esqueceu completamente de colocar o skate na mala. — Ah, foi mal! — disse agitada enquanto tentava criar espaço ao redor de todas as suas coisas, precisando se contorcer mais que o desejado para jogar o skate no banco traseiro junto com sua mochila, deixando no colo apenas uma ecobag com alguns potes de comida. — Bom dia, oma. — sorriu desajeitada enquanto se inclinava para beijá-lo brevemente. — Espero que não esteja com raiva por eu ter feito você acordar cedo num sábado. — eram nove horas da manhã, mas sabia muito bem o quanto ele gostava de esticar o próprio sono. — Especialmente para cair do skate algumas vezes.

↳ 014. the back of a wailing ambulance .

The night was a recipe for disaster, and all Dewey had done was add ingredients straight into the pot. A party at a time like this sound terrible, awful. He wanted nothing to do with it, but the three people he wanted to protect most thought otherwise. And while most would think it was his opinion that would weigh the most, both being the oldest and a literal cop, but those who thought that didn’t know Dewey Riley. So he reluctantly brought his sister, her best friend and his boyfriend (?) to the farmhouse he was somewhat familiar with; it was her boyfriend’s place. Well, his parent’s place, but anytime the place was brought up it seemed to be just Stu — much like this time. He had his own suspicions about Stu, mostly just as a result of him being an older brother, but there was something about the guy he always found… unsettling. But he thought he was too dumb to be a killer, not one that could evade the police this much. Oh, but he was wrong. Terribly wrong. And by the time he realized, it was far too late. The knife was already dug into his back —- both figuratively and literally. Tatum was gone from the world, Sidney was fighting for her life, Raleigh was… he really had no clue. He felt helpless, all he could do was listen to the chaos ensuing around him as he slipped in an out of consciousness. When he did finally come to, when he woke up and felt he could actually stay at least half awake, he was inside an ambulance. The sirens whirred with an urgency he’d never heard before, an endless crush as the vehicle rushed to the local hospital. He didn’t register much at first; not the EMT worker trying their hardest to keep him from slipping once more, and barely even the hand holding onto one of his. But after a few seconds, he was able to turn his head in the direction of the source. And he saw Raleigh. He was a bit banged up, obviously shaken by whatever he’d seen that night, but… he was okay. More okay than he was, really. And that alone put a weak smile across his lips, enjoying the last few moments of peace he had before the reality of what happened that night hit him; before the weight of his loss would finally start to sink in, and possibly sink him with it.

The drive up to Seattle had been long, incredibly long. People couldn’t fucking drive, it seemed. Jack had raged in the car as she drove until traffic died down, nerves calming. Now they were finally in Seattle, having brought their suitcases into the guest bedroom. The blonde had avoided going upstairs, not wanting to see her sister’s old room. At least, not tonight. Or tomorrow. ....Okay, maybe in a few days she’d be up for it.

Bryan was asleep but she could just hear her parents hovering outside of the bedroom door. Rolling her eyes, she ran a hand through her hair and grimaced. “I need a shower. Could you entertain my parents while I clean up? I won’t be too long. I promise.” She tugged at Riley’s shirt, this time not tearing it as she pulled her close to kiss her gently. “Love you.” Jack said softly as she pulled away, lightly smacking her girlfriend’s butt as she grabbed some clothes and headed to the bathroom that was attached to their bedroom.

As soon as she clicked the bathroom door closed, she heard the bedroom door open. Her parents immediately entered inside, Katrina all smiles as she moved to hug Riley. Adrian watched from the door-frame, leaning against it with arms crossed as he waited to hear the shower turn on, signaling his daughter wasn’t listening in. As soon as that happened, he gave Katrina a nod to which she immediately spoke to Riley. “Is she okay? She’s treating you well, right? Is this serious? I know you two have been friends for ages and we just--we don’t want to see you get hurt. Either of you.”

Usually Riley wouldn’t have been so startled by a touch like that, but --- well, usually Riley wasn’t focusing on Benny’s stovetop like he was right now. Warm hands wrapping around his stomach tore his attention away from the pan of batter he was hopefully going to turn into a pancake. He grinned up at his boyfriend, and gently nuzzled his chest.

“ I thought you’d be asleep for a little while longer, “ he said, “ at least until you smelled smoke. We haven’t gotten there yet, though, so maybe this surprise breakfast will not be attended by the fire department today. “ His worried gaze returned to the pan, and carefully he peeled some of the batter up to examine the underside. “ That’s...cooked, right? Good to flip? Can it even be flipped? This is an overzealous pancake. “
