Beauty In the Bad Things

I've decided to cave and started writing the Robron reunion fic that's been brewing in my head. Super excited about sharing this with everybody!

Here's the synopsis if you're keen to give it a look!

When Robert crashes back into Aaron's life in the most traumatic way imaginable, he's left as a shattered man, unwilling to let anyone in, least of all Robert. But that's exactly what Robert wants. Prison has turned him into a mere shadow of his old self, and he despises the person he has become. He's harsh, angry, and ready to set the entire world on fire. With anger and a deep-seated resentment dividing them, and with both of them burdened with so much trauma, the void between them now feels insurmountable. But, as they navigate their new relationship as entirely different people, can they discover a way to rebuild what they lost all those years ago?

Great question! It probably depends on who is suffering the most angst at each stage of a plot so I switch it up a lot.

Still, perhaps I choose Aaron's pov more because I like to show how much in love with Rob he is; in canon I craved more of this so I make up for it in my writing.

the delusions keep going strong and after seeing aaron behind the bar i can't help coming up with silly scenarios like aaron overhearing gail gossiping about victoria being stressed on the phone all the time lately and then one day vic comes over to help marlon cover a shift in the kitchen but then she needs to run out because of some harry/jacob emergency so she leaves her phone behind and gail whines to aaron about it because vic was waiting for an important call that day and then the phone starts ringing and there is nobody there to answer other than aaron and even though it has been years aaron recognizes the prison ID instantly and he freezes for a few seconds before picking it up and hearing robert's voice on the other end of the line saying victoria? like no time as passed at all and hearing that voice still makes aaron feel everything at once, happy and hurt, broken and complete, but finally, finally at home.

I have never posted a fic anywhere in my life, though I have written quite a few. I've always been too anxious about criticism to put myself out there. But hey, there's a time for everything, right? New year and all that.

I wrote this two-piece in my phone notes right after Liv died, when we thought there was still a chance Robert would turn up. I'll post part one, from Aaron's perspective, below and see how it goes. Please be gentle with me 🙉

Part 1 - Aaron

Aaron is buckling under the weight of it all, the death of his little sister who in a way was almost like his child, the betrayal of his mother against not only himself, but Paddy too. He feels the need to hurt himself building inside, from the soles of his feet to the tips of his fingers. He craves a blade or a match, anything that could outweigh and distract from the pain he feels inside. But even more than that, he craves for someone to hold him, and love him - someone who knows him, and knows just how close he is to drowning in this moment.

But there is no one. Paddy is devastated, ruined by Aaron's mother again, and there is Eve to think about. She is just a small child, and Aaron can't be Paddy's priority right now.

All that mattered to his mother was that her secret be kept hidden, even knowing how Aaron feels about keeping them. And there is no Marco, not anymore. Of course he got fed up with Aaron's inability to make a decision, who wouldn't? One minute Aaron wanted his italian boyfriend to up and move to a rural Yorkshire village, the next day he backtracked and said he'd go back to Milan. Then he'd gone back and forth between the two options at least four more times, when finally Marco had said he was staying in Milan, but strongly hinted that Aaron shouldn't bother coming back.

So here Aaron is, staring at the fresh grave of his little sister, nails digging into the palms of his hands, leaving little crescent moons in their wake and tears burning behind his eyelids. Alone again, because people don't stay with Aaron. Why couldn't someone just stay?

There's a chill in the air, it makes the hairs on the back of his neck stand up, so he pulls his coat tighter around himself. It's going to be November soon. His heart clenches a bit at the thought of a little boy he used to think of as his own turning 5 in a few days. He hadn't been allowed to stay either.

Something in the atmosphere around him has shifted, Aaron can feel it in his bones. He turns around slowly and looks around, over towards the bridge. A lone figure is standing there, dressed in a long black coat, as if dressed for a funeral. Though for this one, for Liv's, they're a day too late. Aaron blinks harshly, he's cried so much it's hard to see clearly. It can't be, can it? It must be his mind playing tricks on him, he has probably - finally - lost the plot.

His feet start moving none the less, almost making him stumble several times with how fast he's going. The figure has started moving too, the black coat flapping about in the wind, and soon enough they're face to face at the top of the bridge.

'Aaron.'

That voice, the way he says his name. It's been so long since he's heard it. Aaron's knees give out then and he knows he would be nothing more than a heap on the ground if two strong arms hadn't steadied him and gathered him into a tight embrace. Aaron is sobbing now, fingers clinging to the lapels of the coat his ex-husband is wearing.

'Robert?'

His voice comes out wounded and cracked - desperate, even to his own ears. With that one spoken word, he tries to convey everything he wants to say; she's gone, I'm so alone, you're here, I've missed you, please don't leave me. And because he's Robert, he seems to hear everything Aaron can't say, as he always has.

'I know. It's alright, I've got you now.'

Aaron nods and just holds on with all he has.

'Stay,' he quietly whispers into the shoulder of the woolen coat. It smells faintly of citrus, just like he remembers. A hand is stroking across his back in a soothing motion and Aaron melts into it. 'Please, just... don't go.'

'I won't. I promise you, I won't.'

Chapter two is up! This one is a bit of a heartwrencher so I hope you're ready for it ! Would love to know what you all think!

Aaron’s still in the corridor. 

He feels he’s been here for hours but can’t say how long it’s been. He’s kept his watchful gaze on the prison guards situated outside Robert’s door, who seem to be pretty shit at their jobs considering the number of people they’re letting in and out of the room.

He doesn’t even get why Robert needs them. He’s not some high-security threat to humanity. 

He’s a man in fucking coma.

As Aaron leans against the wall outside Robert’s room, his thoughts continue to run rampant, making him think through all possible scenarios of what could be happening in there right now.

He tries not to think about it.

He tries reminding himself he’s not actually married to Robert anymore.

Why, then, is he still even here?

Deep down, he knows he’s never stopped caring about the man he used to be married to. How could he? He’d been such a big part of his life for so many years that now, with the chance of him dying, Aaron’s heart feels like it’s on the verge of breaking for good.

He has no idea if he’ll ever recover from it. Not if Robert actually dies.

He feels sick to the stomach and can’t find the nerve to go back in there, so he just waits.

What he’s waiting for, he has no idea.
