Album Number Three Hundred Twenty One. “The Book of Taliesyn” is the second studio album by Deep Purple, recorded only three months after #shadesofdeeppurple and released by #tetragrammatonrecords in October 1968, just before their first US tour. The name for the album was taken from the 14th-century Book of Taliesin. My copy is on Tetragrammaton Records - T-107. The structure of the album is similar to that of their first, with four original songs and three rearranged covers; however, the tracks are longer, the arrangements more complex and the sound more polished than on Shades of Deep Purple. The music style is a mix of #psychedelicrock, #progressiverock and #hardrock, with several inserts of classical music arranged by the band's keyboard player Jon Lord. “The Book of Taliesyn is a representation of seven different feelings with #richieblackmore #RodEvans #ianpaice #nickysimper and #jonlord establishing the moods under the spiritual direction of #taliesyn. The lyrics tell a true story: on 4 December 1971, Deep Purple were in Montreux, Switzerland, to record an album using a mobile recording studio (rented from the Rolling Stones and known as the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio—referred to as the "Rolling truck Stones thing" and "a mobile" in the lyrics) at the entertainment complex that was part of the Montreux Casino (referred to as "the gambling house" in the song lyric). On the eve of the recording session, a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert was held in the casino's theatre. This was to be the theatre's final concert before the casino complex closed down for its annual winter renovations, which would allow Deep Purple to record there. At the beginning of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on "King Kong", the place suddenly caught fire when somebody in the audience fired a flare gun toward the rattan covered ceiling, as mentioned in the "some stupid with a flare gun" line. Although there were no major injuries, the resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. Album Number Three Hundred Twenty. “Shades of Deep Purple” is the debut studio album by the English rock band #deeppurple, released in July 1968 on #tetragrammaton in the United States and in September 1968 on #parlophone in the United Kingdom. The band, initially called Roundabout, was the idea of former Searchers drummer Chris Curtis, who recruited #jonlord and #ritchieblackmore before leaving the project. The Mk. I (That “Mk. I” confused me) line-up of the band was completed by vocalist/frontman #RodEvans, along with bassist #NickSimper and drummer #ianpaice, in March 1968. My copy is on Tetragrammaton Records - T-102. (Don’t know the pressing dates, but, I bought it in the 80s, so I’m sure it’s many repressing down the road). After about two months of rehearsals, Shades of Deep Purple was recorded in only three days in May 1968 and contains four original songs and four covers, thoroughly rearranged to include classical interludes and sound more psychedelic. Stylistically, the music is close to psychedelic rock and progressive rock, two genres with an ever-growing audience in the late 1960s. “Dragon head, machine of lead.
