📝 Started of funny but it is hard to get behind the two characters when they don't seem to have any redeeming qualities and are selfish about the people they hurt. I enjoyed the setting in Belfast but I did not enjoy the self absorbed "lovers" who were happy to lie and cheat their way into a relationship and didn't seem to have much of a moral compass. Nothing rom com about it.

Irish Film, TV Nominations 2023: ‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ ‘Bad Sisters’ Lead With Most Nods
“The Banshees of Inisherin,” starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, led the nominations for the Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs) as the full list of nominees was unveiled on Monday night local time, picking up 11 nods in the film category.
“Bad Sisters” – Sharon Horgan’s Apple TV+ mystery series – led the pack in the drama category with 12 noms.
Coming off the back of a stellar year for Irish film and television, the nominations include a number of familiar names and titles, including Paul Mescal, who has been nominated for best lead actor in a film for “Aftersun” and best supporting actor in a film for “God’s Creatures” while Farrell is also competing in both categories, both for his star turn in “Banshees” and his supporting role as Penguin in “The Batman.”
“Conversations with Friends” has also scored noms in multiple categories while Aoife McArdle is up for best drama director for Apple TV+ series “Severance.” Sinead O’Connor doc “Nothing Compares” is up for best feature documentary.
The IFTAs are set to take place at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre on May 7. They will be broadcast on local network RTÉ.

WTF did I just see?
I finished "The Lovers" Sky Showtime series today and I haven't been that confused in a while. I like both main actors, I think there is something magnetic about Janet's character, I love the setting in Belfast. But the show asks me to root for an affair and I get that it happens and I'm not really judging Janet here but I am judging Seamus. We meet the other woman and you can see she cares about him and they know and support each other. In the same episode he says they will probably marry and at the end of it he declares his love for Janet - when did that happen? What was the stupid "don't fall in love with me" bs if it doesn't last even a full next episode, did they love each other before or did it take a few days and one night of sex for him to get from affair and probably marrying the other one to deciding he will leave her for Janet? And then he is angry at her about the terrorist thing cause he wouldn't broke up with his girlfriend but the way you're treating her, you shouldn;t be together anyway my man. On top of that the whole terrorist plot is so thrown in. I have no idea if it's a weird joke on a very serious matter or if they're treating it seriously but were absolutely unable to correctly translate it onto the screen - the conversation on the bench where they trauma dump on each other in a span of a minute is the most tonally weird thing Ive seen in years. Why, why, did someone think its a good idea to get into a very heavy and recent historical issue in this way? And to what purpose? The season (first and hopefully only) ends with Seamus getting weirdly moved by common people and leaves him job live on air to profess his love to Janet and run to her supermarket in the rain. I get the point of him being too focused on being famous, I get that the politicians offer points out the fakeness and dirtiness of the whole field but wasn't he supposed to love it. Is really the best thing to drop his dream job and screw his whole team?
One more thing: did they make up "LUV" group Janet was supposed to be a member of? I couldn't find anything about it online and I could understand not wanting to use a real one but if they created the name only to tie luvers to the shos name than its another example of how untactfully the show uses history.
Okay I feel better after this rant but honestly this was an absolutely confusing TV experience and I can't believe that's what came out of mixture of ingredients that I should all love on paper.

he did as his father asked of him and dropped out so that he could become a mechanic, but he only stayed in ireland until his younger brother turned eighteen before moving to los angeles to pursue other dreams for himself.
he's always been a part of bands since he was seventeen but starting static midnight was the first time he'd ever been a front man before and not just a guitarist.
cian is definitely low key a drug user and will often abuse pills. he's got hella self esteem issues which is a big part of why he self medicates.

start at the beginning, who are you and why are you important?"uhm," the man grimaced at the word important, failing to understand why he'd be referred to as important. "'names cian gallagher, 'm part of a band called static midnight. i sing and play guitar." his thick irish accent brought a certain rigidity to his syllables, whilst he was direct and to the point.
how long have you been making music?"i started teaching myself to play guitar when i was probably about seventeen." his arms are crossed over his chest as he speaks, but there's always movement to his body. a restlessness that permiates throughout him. "yeah it was stupid, i wanted to impress a girl so i learned a few chords and i just kept playing ever since. then being in a band was just always somethin' i did till it became my thing and people were listenin'.
how would you describe the kind of music you make?
shrugging his shoulders, he had to admit he found defining his styles difficult. especially considering his influences were always so varied. "i mean alternative rock for sure, i think i've seen some comments about being soft grunge or fitting into an emo category but i think it's all kinda much of a muchness. sometimes we try and change it up but as long as people are listening to it and feeling it it doesn't really matter."
who are some of your biggest musical influences?"growing up in ireland i had a lot of british and irish music influencing my tastes and styles. i always grew up listening to alt rock, goth, punk and post punk styles of music because of my parents especially. but i also did always love the american scenes too."
what is the first record you ever bought?"i think it was either psychocandy by the jesus and mary chain or wish by the cure. both of those albums are amazing."
how would you describe your style of performance? what makes your shows worth seeing?"i definitely think my favourite shows are definitely with the crowds who are there to get on your level you know? the shows in the intimate rooms with the small stages and the crowds who wanna really feel it with ya." there's a small pause whilst cian brushes his lips with his tongue, contemplating how mad he sounds right now. "that's what i like doing at shows, connecting with crowds and feelin' the energy, ya know."
what are you still hoping to achieve in your career?"i'd really love to make money, i mean i think that's most peoples dreams. and we're definitely headed in the right direction but there's still a ways to go."

I enjoyed watching this 8-part, 'dark comedy' series on the ITVX channel with my friend yesterday. Set in Dublin, written by Nancy Harris and first aired in 2022, it has been described as an "Irish Fleabag", the BBC comedy about a "dry-witted, free-spirited, confused, angry, grief-riddled woman" written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
'The Dry' starts with a newly sober Shiv Sheridan, played by Roisin Gallagher, returning home for a family funeral, having spent the past decade living a chaotic and increasingly dangerous lifestyle in London, the consequences of an hellacious addiction to alcohol. But Shiv is not the only one navigating choppy waters. Each character has their own knots to untangle, and the family are often at each others' throats, as they try to cope with difficult emotions and situations, such as blame, anger, disappointment, secrets and sorrow.

We also watched a documentary about the pomp and ceremony party held at Persepolis in Iran by the Shah 1971 which hosted over 60 heads of state from all over the world, while half the Iranian population lived in poverty, and which ultimately led to his downfall and replacement by the Ayatollah Khomeini. Will add more info later as a separate post. E.g. it was to celebrate the 2500th anniversary of the Shah's dynasty; info re. the link with Cyrus the Great; the Shah had himself crowned as the 'King of Kings'; Queen Elizabeth did not attend [ADD REASON WHY] but was represented by husband, Philip, and daughter, Anne. Add info re. earlier British and American assistance at some point on behalf of the Shah. Etc. Also add how much the celebrations cost.

The Lovers premieres today
The Lovers, the new TV series from David Ireland and Justin Martin, is out today.
The Lovers follows Janet (Roisin Gallagher) as supermarket worker who doesn’t care about anything, including her life, and Seamus (Johnny Flynn) a handsome, self-centered, political broadcaster with what looks to be a perfect London life and a celebrity girlfriend (Alice Eve). When they unexpectedly meet, they instantly clash – and yet also find themselves inextricably drawn to each other.
