The Headhunters | Live From Brooklyn Bowl
Few bands can claim a history as remarkable and illustrious as The Headhunters. Originating in 1973 under the visionary leadership of renowned musician Herbie Hancock, the band quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with. Comprising percussionist Bill Summers, bassist Paul Jackson, saxophonist Bennie Maupin and Harvey Mason, who was soon replaced by legendary drummer Mike Clark, each member brought their unique talents to the table, forging a timeless legacy that surpasses the dreams of most musical ensembles. By blending jazz, funk, and rock, The Headhunters created a sound that resonated with audiences worldwide, selling over a million albums and inspiring musicians across genres for generations. Their music was even sampled by hundreds of hip-hop artists throughout the '80s and '90s, leaving an indelible mark on contemporary music.
Live From Brooklyn Bowl by The Headhunters
Today, The Headhunters' impact remains a global phenomenon, with their time alongside Hancock serving as a transformative experience. The band went on to release six more full-length albums. They ventured out on their own, free from Hancock's involvement, producing standout albums such as "Survival of the Fittest" in 1975 and "Straight from the Gate" in 1977. The band reunited with Herbie in 1998 for “Return of The Headhunters” and subsequent released albums “Evolution Revolution” in 2003 and “Platinum” in 2011. The Headhunters’ latest studio release “Speakers In The House” came out November 4th, 2022 to international acclaim through Ropeadope Records in association with Devil Hills Entertainment.
Now co-led by original members Bill Summers on percussion Mike Clark on drums complemented by the talents of some of New Orleans' finest musicians: Kyle Roussel on keys, Donald Harrison on alto saxophone, and Chris Severin on seven-string bass. These lifelong friends have shaped the band into a musical powerhouse. In celebration of their eponymous album's 50th anniversary, the band embarked on a world tour in early 2023.
The journey began with a monumental performance meticulously recorded at the iconic Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg, New York, on February 9th, 2023. Showcasing the band's incredible live energy, this momentous occasion was masterfully captured and subsequently mixed and mastered in New Orleans by the talented Keenan McRae. The result is an extraordinary live album that encapsulates the essence of The Headhunters' artistry.

Prince Far I :: Under Heavy Manners
Ital and vital. Produced by Joe Gibbs and engineered by Errol Thompson, Prince Far I, aka the Voice Of Thunder, dropped this slab of essential roots reggae in 1976. His grizzled ropeadope delivery scorching the LP’s ten tracks, Far I’s epic toasting (or chanting, as he preferred) is on full display riding a wave of rumbling bass, subtle dub effects, percussion and organ.

Greg Spero - The Chicago Experiment: Revisited
Following the global success of The Chicago Experiment, the long awaited fourth in The Experiment Series, Greg Spero brings us 8 unreleased tracks from the original sessions. While the sound is instantly recognizable, The Chicago Experiment: Revisited expands on the original in a flowing and explorative way. These tracks represent an expansion on the original Chicago Experiment concept, bringing in more long-form compositions, drawing from our early Chicago roots. So much has evolved in Chicago music to bring us to the innovative urban-rooted beat-oriented idiom we play with today. In this record, I'm reaching back to pull in influences from our early days, playing at Von Freeman's jam session, the Green Mill late nights, and our long-form creative improvisations at the Velvet Lounge. (Greg Spero) Revisited is not a group of bonus tracks assembled for commercial sale; it is a cohesive and deeper look into the artistry of the players and their relationship to one another. One gets the feeling of being present in a dimly lit studio after hours, when the real talk comes out. Makaya McCraven (drums) Marquis Hill (trumpet) Joel Ross (vibraphone - track 2) Jeff Parker (guitar) Darryl Jones (bass) Greg Spero (piano)

New Music | Jonathan Suazo
The masterful Puerto Rican saxophonist and composer Jonathan Suazo is thrilled to announce the August 4, 2023 release of his formal debut album, RICANO, on Ropeadope.
All About Jazz has glowed: “Three vastly different ideals — rhythmic agility, soaring grace, and barbed blowing — all merge under Suazo's mouthpiece.” Avant Music News called his playing “compelling.“ A strong command of the jazz language, limitless imagination on his improvisations, intensity in both emotion and technique,” opined LatinJazzNet. Ahead of RICANO, GRAMMY.com declared him one of “10 Emerging Jazz Artists To Watch.”
Suazo calls RICANO “an original Afro-Caribbean experience” that deals in themes of “exploration, integration, community, education and self-acceptance.” The title is a tip of the hat to Suazo’s dual heritage; it fuses the words Puertorriqueño and Dominicano.
RICANO also features an array of special guests from the highest echelon of the global jazz scene: saxophonists Miguel Zenón and David Sánchez, percussionists Enrique “Kike” Serrano, Florentino “Magic” Mejía, and Otoniel Nicolás, cuatrista and singer Fabiola Méndez, singer Tanicha Lopez, bassist Ricky Rodriguez, cuatrista Christian Nieves, pianist Josean Jacobo, rapper Emil "El Hijo de Borikén" Martínez, and many more.
Suazo threads each track on the album with enveloping chants, curiosity-piquing lyrics and elements of dance and improvisational elements — all inseparable from the traditions of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. As Suazo explained to GRAMMY.com, the period of self-reflection that culminated in RICANO began during his time at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, when he took several research trips to both islands.
"I started doing a deeper dive into my roots as an important exercise to find something in the source of your identity that can carry the rest of your career forward," Suazo explains of his time at the Global Jazz Institute. "Something that I personally identify with that can be translated into music." As such, each composition on RICANO pays homage to Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic through standalone representations and unique combinations of both island’s musical traditions.
