👀 you’ll meet a handsome stranger!
Ooops, it's a modern AU featuring Roz and the handsome one-night stand that turns out to be Rolfe, aka the older half brother she never met in Vincent's family.
It was another Christmas and another holiday alone.
It wasn’t for a lack of trying on her friends’ part: Vincent had tried to coax her back to the Trevelyan home for some holiday cheer with his family, but there was a thick cloud of melancholy that clung to Rosalind Marlowe like a bad cold that kept coming back when she thought she’d gotten over the worst of it. Perhaps she was being too hard on herself -- after all, it had only been nine months since Alderis had died and even that felt like both no time and too much of it had passed since then.
Instead of the cheer outside, Roz had slipped into The Hanged Man, blending in with those who either had nowhere to go or, perhaps, like she, had chosen to go out instead.
She had expected a quiet drink, something strong and sweet the nurse her sorrows.
What she hadn’t expected was him.

Okay okay okay have a looong list babe! 💚 (Going with literally everything that gives me vibes lol) (There's also ones that we already talked about but not explored that much... ops?! But they have a *) (Will also use # you'll know why lol) Also, there are some ocs that are in the same universe, but decided just about specific relationships so kept them separated! (Also, tried to follow you "don't do crossover with this oc" list, know that you alredy did some exceptions with me but we always talked about it first and I don't want to make you uncomfortable! If you think you could feel comfortable with some of that ocs or have some other ideas you know I'm always here 👀)

Review: Miss Newbury’s List
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
England, 1820
Rosalind Newbury loves her family and wants nothing more than to add to their legacy. So when an opportunity arises to marry a duke—a dream come true for her family—despite hardly knowing him, she quickly agrees.
But after rediscovering a childhood wish list, Ros realizes that she has dreams of her own and little time left to fulfill them. She recruits her dearest friend Liza and subsequently Liza’s handsome but wayward cousin Charlie—a gentleman turned rugged boxer—to help her complete her list before her wedding.
From boxing lessons to buried treasure, Charlie helps Ros experience a life and love that she’d never dreamed possible. Soon, Ros is faced with the very decision she’s been running from—to save her family’s future or her own.
Plot:
Rosalind Newbury was getting every girl, and every parent, dream - she is marrying the Duke. This adds huge economical advantages to her family, as they move up in social status as she will become the Duchess of Marlow, and bear the Duke’s heirs. Where she spends her days busily getting ready for her wedding, and being the best Dutches she can be, Ros cannot get out of her mind the list her Aunt Alice had. Aunt Alice, before her wedding, completed a list of items she wanted to do as an unmarried girl to make her life complete before the new chapter. Doing the same, Ros decides weeks before her wedding bell to complete the list of ten items younger Ros thought she would need to be whole. A list that she has recruited her best friend Liza, and her cousin, Charlie, to help. Some of these list items are easy, like painting a self-portrait, and going on one last adventure with her younger brother Ben. Others are more challenging like learning to swim and un-lady-like of eating all the sweets she can in one sitting. Where Liza is not totally game for the entire list, Charlie is, and despite his rough past, Ros and he become close friends. With every day with Charlie feeling like a breath of fresh air, Ros begins to realize how much she actually does not know the Duke, and how unhappy she could be in this marriage. When her relationship with Charlie stays friendly, but with hints of there could be more, Ros has to follow Aunt Alice’s advance and take her own happiness into her hands. In the hope to find true love after all.
Thoughts:
Megan Walker writes this proper friendship-to-lovers story as Ros falls in love with Charlie, and has to break up her marriage to the Duke to save her heart. With a fast plot and easy writing, Walker writes this clean content story for all readers, who want to enjoy a passionate romance and escapism into 19th century England. Ros is a fun and remarkable character. Her humor, recklessness, and her wanting to live a fun life, make her connectable, and a true character to root for. Charlie was also a likable character, with a past that he wanted to be better than, humor, having a willingness to help out, and how he loved Ros even for all her un-lady-like characters. One of the main plot drivers is Ros's completion of her list before she marries the Duke. This fun concept has our young adults doing the things that child Ros wanted to be before her big day, which is why some were strange like eating all the sweets, and others more wholesome like one last adventure with Ben. What I hated about the list is that Walker gave it to us all at once, whereas a chapter-by-chapter reveal could have been more entertaining. The second was that the majority of the list was boring items, that even Walker skipped through to get to the more exciting ones. I feel like, even as a child, Ros had grander wishes than to paint a self-portrait, and we should have had a few more actions, one that was reading about Ros writing in her diary. For side characters, Ben and Liza added some flair to the story, but generally, Walker focuses on Charlie and Ros, and their friendship turned into a relationship throughout the story. Overall, a proper romance to add to your shelf, if you are down for some friends to lovers, as Ros completes her marriage list only to realize she is ready to marry the person she is, currently, not engaged with.

Adaptations of Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Films:
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1908 - U.S.). Produced by William N. Selig. There are no known existing copies of this film.
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1908 - U.S.). Produced by Kalem Films. Directed by Sidney Olcott, starring Frank Oakes Rose in the lead role.
- A Modern Dr. Jekyll  (1909 - U.S.). Produced by William N. Selig. There are no known existing copies of this film.
- The Duality of Man (1910 - U.K.). First Jekyll-Hyde adaptation filmed in England, directed by Harry Brodribb Irving.
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1912 - U.S.) United States production based on Richard Mansfield's stage performance. Thanhouser Company. Starring James Cruze and Florence Labadie.
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1913 - U.S.). Starring King Baggot and directed by Herbert Brenon. Distributed by The Universal Film Manufacturing Company, Incorporated, the precursor to Universal Studios.
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Done to a Frazzle. (1914 - U.S.) Ten-minute satire starring Charles de Forrest as both Jekyll and Hyde.
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920 - U.S.) . Famous silent film version, starring John Barrymore. Plot follows the Sullivan version of 1887, with elements from The Picture of Dorian Gray.
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920 - U.S.) . Directed by J. Charles Haydon, starring Sheldon Lewis.
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde  (1920 - U.S.). Satire starring Hank Mann of the Keystone Cops.
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931 - U.S.) . Known for its acting, visual symbolism, and special effects, it follows the Sullivan plot. Fredric March won the Academy Award for his portrayal. The technical secret of the transformation scenes was not revealed until after the director's death.
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941 - U.S.) . A remake of the 1931 movie, it stars Spencer Tracy, Ingrid Bergman, and Lana Turner. Unlike the 1931 version, this film uses what Christopher Frayling called "the movie pronunciation", /ˈdʒɛkəl/ JEK-əl, instead of the original /ˈdʒiːkəl/ JEE-kəl.
- The Son of Dr. Jekyll  (1951 - U.S.). Dr. Jekyll's illegitimate son Edward tries to recreate his father's formula to clear his father's name.
- Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1953 - U.S.). A comedy starring Boris Karloff as Dr. Jekyll and an uncredited Eddie Parker (Karloff's stuntman) as Mr. Hyde.
- The Daughter of Dr. Jekyll (1957 - U.S.) . A young woman discovers she is the daughter of Dr. Jekyll. This low-budget adaption includes the bizarre and unique feature of Mr. Hyde as a "human werewolf", who can only be destroyed by a stake through the heart, which is the traditional way of killing vampires, not werewolves.
- The Ugly Duckling (1959 - U.K.) . A comedy film and the first of three adaptations of the story by Hammer Film Productions. It has nothing to do with the story of "The Ugly Duckling", despite its name.
- The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll or House of Fright and Jekyll's Inferno (1960 - U.K.) . A lurid love triangle and explicit scenes of snakes, opium dens, rape, murder and bodies crashing through glass roofs.
- The Nutty Professor  (1963 - U.S.). Directed by Jerry Lewis. This screwball comedy retains a thin connection to the original.
- Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971 - U.K.). Starring Ralph Bates as Jekyll and Martine Beswick as Hyde. The earliest work to show Jekyll transform into a beautiful woman. The film notably recasts Jekyll from a kind, well-intentioned man into Jack the Ripper, who uses Sister Hyde as a disguise to carry out his murders. Jekyll also employs the services of Burke and Hare.
- I, Monster (1971 - U.K.). Starring Christopher Lee in the Jekyll and Hyde role and Peter Cushing as Utterson. Recasts Jekyll (with a name change to Dr. Charles Marlowe/Mr. Edward Blake) as a 1906 Freudian psychotherapist. Retains some of Stevenson's original plot and dialogue.
- Dr. Black, Mr. Hyde (1976 - U.S.) , a blaxploitation version by William Crain starring Bernie Casey as Dr. Henry Pride and Rosalind Cash.
.- Jekyll and Hyde... Together Again (1982 - U.S.) , a campy satire wit Mark Blankfield as Jekyll who experiments with a "drug to replace all surgery", which is inadvertently mixed with an unknown substance.
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1986 - Australian) it was made by Burbank Animation Studios.
- Edge of Sanity (1989 - U.S.) , a low-budget adaptation with Anthony Perkins as a version of Jekyll whose experiments with synthetic cocaine transform him into Hyde, who is also Jack the Ripper
- The Pagemaster (1994 - U.S.) , a mix of animation and live action, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde appear as the movie's first villain (voiced by Leonard Nimoy).
- Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde (1995 - U.S.) , in which a descendant of Dr. Jekyll creates a variant of his ancestor's potion that turns him into a woman.
- Mary Reilly (1996 - U.S.) . Starring Julia Roberts and John Malkovich and based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Valerie Martin.
- Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (2002 - U.K.), Director: Maurice Phillips, starring John Hannah

Books
- 1890, The Untold Sequel of the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Frances H. Little is a 're-telling' of the story based on the -idea that Edward Hyde was an actual person, a former actor whom Jekyll had met in America and brought to London, and not the alter ego of Henry Jekyll. Told from the perspective first of Utterson and then of Hyde, the story recounts Hyde murdering first Sir Danvers Carew in an opium-induced fit of rage, then Jekyll for the inheritance stated in Jekyll's will, and finally hiding Jekyll's body in a secret room in Jekyll's house. Hyde finally tricks Lanyon with a false transformation before committing suicide as in Stevenson's book.
- 1979, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Holmes by Loren D. Estleman is a 'retelling' of the story based on the idea that Utterson hired Sherlock Holmes to investigate Hyde's connection to Jekyll in the belief that Hyde is a blackmailer. The novel is written in a manner that suggests it was essentially taking place 'behind the scenes' of the familiar storyline, with Utterson hiring Holmes to investigate the apparent blackmail and the Queen herself later asking Holmes to investigate the death of Sir Danvers Carew. The story culminates with Holmes and Watson confronting Hyde just as he consumes the last sample of the potion to turn back into Jekyll, Jekyll telling them his story before forcing Holmes to kill him, as he recognizes that Hyde will never commit suicide and cannot bring himself to do it. In the novel's final chapter, Holmes shares the story with Robert Louis Stevenson, but asks that Stevenson leave Holmes and Watson out of his version of the story to prevent anyone realizing that it is a chronicle of real events and to avoid facing the legal issue of Holmes killing Jekyll, even if in self-defence.
- 1990, Robert Bloch and Andre Norton's The Jekyll Legacy acts as a sequel to the novel, in which Hester Lane, a reporter from Canada, discovers that she is Jekyll's heir. However, someone is continuing Jekyll's experiments. The novel takes an even more sinister turn as Jekyll's butler Poole and Utterson are bludgeoned to death.

The film adaptation stars Jason Flemyng as both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the latter using prosthetic makeup. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are employed by the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to combat the Fantom. The version of Hyde depicted in both comic and movie bears more resemblance to the Hulk than the malevolent dwarf of the novel, possessing great strength and size. As in the comic book on which it is based, this is attributed to Hyde "growing, free from boundaries, free from limitations" (although the film version is still dependent on Jekyll drinking the serum to transform, rather than Hyde no longer requiring the potion to manifest).
- 2004, film Van Helsing. Robbie Coltrane provides the voice of a CGI animated Mr. Hyde, who Van Helsing unintentionally kills at the cathedral of Notre Dame when pursuing him through Paris. Like in The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, Mr. Hyde is also portrayed as a large, hulking brute. When Hyde dies, he transforms back into Dr. Jekyll. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is also the focus of the film's animated prequel Van Helsing: The London Assignment, where Hyde is shown as Jack the Ripper, stealing souls each night for a youth potion that Jekyll, in the guise of a royal physician, uses to restore Queen Victoria's youth and seduce her.

- 2016, TV U.S., Once Upon a Time season 5 and 6, with Hank Harris as Dr. Jekyll and Sam Witwer as Mr. Hyde. In this version, Rumplestiltskin helps Dr. Jekyll to create his formula, hoping to benefit from Dr. Jekyll's work. Dr. Jekyll still has evil tendencies at times, and Hyde can be nice. The characters separate and appear in the present day.
- In season 10 of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, the serial killer Charles DiMesa a.k.a. Dr. Jekyll is active.
- In Power Rangers Dino Super Charge, the name of the character Heckyl refers to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde because he has a split personality and shares a body with Snide.

WIP Whenever
Look, no one's tagged me in anything and my brain has been FULL of wedding planning (16 days but who's counting?) so I haven't had the energy or room to do any writing. BUT chatting with @rhetoricalrogue and now I am full of feelings for Welcome Home Good Hunter. Maybe after the wedding I'll edit and repost because I loved the concept. For now, have a sneak peek at a chapter I had started but never finished.
-----------------------------
They followed her into battle, but Roz would be damned if they followed her into death. Regret, despair and pain tangled within her the moment she knew what had to be done. A signal above the hill flew to the sky, sparking to life a solution that was almost inevitable.
Perhaps she’d been marked for death years ago, the moment she first sliced into her palm, inviting the dangers of demons into her life. But that didn’t mean her companions - her friends - had to suffer with her. They’d listened, running when she’d shouted the command, face-to-face with the evil behind everything.
“Oh Maker, hear my cry…” Roz’s voice was too soft against the howling winds that surged through the mountain pass, her steps faltering in yet another deep snowdrift in her path. If there was a path, she thought, uncertain where she was or where she was going. Her head had been spinning since she woke from her fall, nausea rolling in her stomach that had only dimmed when she moved and discovered pain all along her body. She was a scholar, a teacher; she had never been bred for battle or survival outside of the circle. It felt like a cruel joke as she paused, gritting her teeth against a wave of pain that tugged along her ribs. Fractures from what she could tell, but her magic wavered and flickered as all remaining mana she had refused to recover.
Preserving what magic she had left felt futile, but she had to hold onto some sort of hope that it would be enough to see her to safety. If not…
They’d make her a martyr for their cause, the mage who died for them to escape from the monster that flew in from above. There’d be stories and songs and mourning, maybe a newfound vigor for the fight after. Like Andraste, she’d just be a distant memory, a tickle at the back of the minds of a world that barely knew her beyond her title.
She didn’t have enough energy to muster tears as a dry sob escaped her lips, slipping along the bank as she took another tumble. Through the clouds, she swore she could see pinpricks of stars against a tapestry of blue. She didn’t know how long she lay there, breathing heavily in and out, trying to find the energy to get up again.
“It’s too hard,” she whispered against her sleeve as she wiped away ice from her lashes. “I can’t do this.” Then, with more force, “Why did you pick me?” What good could she do? Soft and weak, too unskilled to go up against the horde that showed up at their door.
Not to mention the ache that settled in her chest when she thought of all the hope they’d been given today. All the hope she’d been given, her breath catching at those last few moments when she felt free enough to move closer to Vincent. Warm and steady and so sure of what they were doing.
Stay she’d asked him. Her name on his lips felt like a prayer, a glimmering whisper of hope that she wasn’t imagining things.

R&J Clown Takes Part ♾ + Part 4
In which a TikTok attempts valiantly to defend R&J, resulting in a truly berserk comment section. Clownage, clownage everywhere and not a drop to drink
“It’s Just Banter, Mate”
Tumblr media
Man wasn’t evil, indeed. And as we all know, it is never Tybalt’s fault. But OP also decides to go for a bizarre interpretation of the duel scene as “low stakes” and “banter-y.” Clearly OP has watched the Zeffirelli version (either that or they’ve been reading one too many fanfics), which decided to have Mercutio and even Tybalt troll around for a bit. But the scene in the play consistently reads serious—Mercutio’s wordplay and baiting is downright caustic, and Tybalt is typically humorless. There is no indication that the duel isn’t serious, particularly by Romeo’s and Benvolio’s reaction. Whether Tybalt accidentally stabbed Mercutio is also up for debate—he does run out of the stage and then returns in fiery choler, so even if it was, it wasn’t heavily regretted.
Also, once again—I do not find Romeo to blame for intervening in the fight. Had he not done so, Mercutio and Tybalt would have 99.99% gotten the full penalty by the Prince, as they dueled in a public street, full of eyewitnesses, where “all eyes gaze upon [them].” Either Tybalt or Mercutio or both would have been sentenced to death or exiled. It is really a no-win, lose-lose situation.
“I Could Be Wrong”
Tumblr media
Romeo’s friends absolutely do not mock him for falling in love with Juliet—simply because they don’t know he has fallen in love with Juliet. Nor do they mock him for falling in love fast, period. Mercutio mocks Romeo for pining over Rosaline and tells him to get laid, but that’s all. Benvolio is genuinely concerned. The Friar is the one who is angry/indignant at Romeo for loving Juliet after Rosaline, but even he does not mock him.
“I, Renowned Shakespeare Expert—”
Tumblr media
MABN is definitely not the same story in the slightest. They have different rhythms, different preoccupations, different characters, different source material, hell, even a different plot!
Also, I have not yet read real, lit-crit criticism of R&J that positions it as a criticism or satire of young love. That clownage is almost strictly for the Internet set.
“It’s Lust, Not Love!1!1!1!”
Tumblr media
This is so close to being an actual insightful analysis, so close. But alas there is still a whiff of clownage to be found—namely in the “cautionary tale” aspect, like Shakespeare is some kindergarten teacher drawing up a picture book yarn for us wee little ones. Also—where is the lust in the “love and lust” equation? Which character(s) exhibits lust? Mercutio and the Nurse are quite bawdy, but ironically they are the least romantic and “chaste” characters in the play apart from the Friar. Are R&J the lustful ones? If so, where is the love? Or could it be they’re…both?
Tumblr media
“Romeo’s friend at the beginning even mentions that Romeo falls in love a lot—” I don’t know what kind of fanfic OP is reading and by this point, I don’t even want to know.
Also, not emotionally invested in each other???? They literally break down weeping and wanting death because they are going to be separated from each other; their parting is particularly painful to read. R&J are two of the most emotional characters in terms of their loving each other. The Friar had to go on an epic, twenty plus line rant even to get Romeo to accept his banishment. If anything, R&J do not chill.
Tumblr media
Ho boy. This is a doozy
1) Shakespeare doesn’t believe in love at first sight/believes in love at second sight—. Rosalind and Orlando, Miranda and Ferdinand, Portia and Bassano kind of (as well as Nesta and Graziano, randomly enough), and the four guys and four gals in Love’s Labor’s Lost. Also, he quotes Marlowe’s famous “Whoever loved that loved not at first sight?” line in a positive way As You Like It when Sylvia falls in love with Rosalind disguised as a boy—also at first sight.
Needless to say, it was a very popular trope. In Shakespeare in particular, either a) You’re already in a relationship established off-stage or pre-play or b) You fall in love at first sight. Doesn’t mean he believed in it himself as a real life phenomenon necessarily (although I suspect he experienced something similar), but it does show that he had no problem using the trope in fiction.
2) The humors—. Please don’t. Shakespeare really does not go for humors in his characterization. Also, it’s understood by the characters that Romeo is sad because he is in love. His melancholy is actually looked on in alarm and worry as not like Romeo—otherwise the other characters would have taken it in stride.
3) Romeo confusing feeling better with meeting Juliet—. Ridiculous and nothing in the play supports this. Actually, Romeo’s later breakdown at his banishment makes his moping over Rosaline look downright cheerful by comparison.
4) The “garden scene” is a massive farce—. Die.
5) Shakespeare 101—. Die (Reprise, scherzo)
“Age Gap, Ew!!1!!1”
Tumblr media
Birds of a feather, paired together.
So ancora, con più emozione: Romeo’s age is not specified in the play. It is assumed he is older than Juliet by 2-4 years. 16-17 are the popular fanon ages.
As for R&J being so controlled they “lash out,” again, not supported by the text. Juliet is obedient to the point of silent—her intro scene has all of 6 lines by her. Very dutiful Elizabethan girl. Romeo is accounted as a “well-governed youth” by no less than Lord Capulet. When they meet, they have no idea they are each other’s enemy (masked ball and all). Their love is not based on nor motivated by their parents’ feud or their high-handedness.
As for the romance aspect being poorly integrated, Arthur Brooke would be very sad you don’t know him. Shakespeare adapted his poem The Tragedie of Romeus and Juliet as a stage play. And yes, in the poem R&J are lovey-dovey, lusty fiends—if anything, Shakespeare brought real warmth, beauty, personality, and, um, romance to their relationship.

Six Sentence Sunday
Thanks, @alittlestarling for tagging me! This turned into a full-blown modern AU Roz/Rolfe oneshot instead of a snippet, but I'm not mad about it.
Tagging @roguelioness and @ejunkiet!
“I don’t know what to get him.”
“Hmm?” Roz craned her neck to examine the spice jars that were placed on a shelf several inches above her eye level.
“Vincent.” Rolfe bent to grab the bags of brown sugar and granulated sugar that were on the list Roz had written out on cheerful yellow notepaper. It was a novelty for him: usually he did curbside pickup of pre-made convenience foods and maybe some fruits or something, mostly so his cousin Ravena wouldn’t yell at him to take better care of his nutritional needs instead of living like he was still twelve and eating the marshmallows out of the cereal box first.
Hey, little marshmallows were amazing. Ravena didn’t have to know that instead of picking them out of his breakfast cereal, now Rolfe simply ordered marshmallows only online in bulk.
“I think that anything you give him would be nice.” She rose to her tiptoes to grab a large bottle of vanilla bean paste, wincing at the cost. Her first paycheck after a hefty raise had been safely deposited in her bank account, and she wanted to celebrate by getting the fancier baking ingredients to make some of hers and her best friend Vincent’s favorite cookies, just to see if there was a difference in taste.
There was a flutter of butterflies in her chest at the thought that she’d be making something new to share with Rolfe as well. That flutter grew as she felt the warmth of his body at her back, his longer arms easily retrieving the bottle she was currently only shoving further and further back into the shelf with her fingertips.
“I’m serious, Roz.” Paper crinkled as he accidentally gripped it too tightly, nerves and the idea of meeting a brother he’d known about his entire adult life but who’d never even heard of him making his gut twist uncomfortably. “I want this to go well.”
The list in his hand was a wrinkled mess and Rolfe had to swallow the thought that this was a bad omen, that maybe the things his mother and older brother told him his entire life were true, that he did ruin everything he touched and that he was a fool to look for happiness, both with a fresh start with his half-brother and with Roz.
Bastards like you don’t deserve nice things. The overhead florescent lighting was suddenly too bright, the music popular a decade or more ago being piped in through ceiling speakers too jarring. Rolfe had the urge to moveout of the shopping aisle with its shelves that felt as if they were closing around him when he felt a pressure on his arm.
“Hey.” Roz gently pried his fingers away from the death grip he had on the list and threaded them with her own. “It will go well. You might not know Vincent, but I do. It’s going to be weird at first, but that’s because he’s a little awkward with people he doesn’t know, but he’s not going to be hostile.”
He dared to take the smallest of breaths to fight against the anxiety that clawed at his throat, the scent of her perfume centering him. “You think?”
Roz squeezed his hand. “I know.” She grinned. “Besides, I’m bringing his favorite cookies when we go meet him. He’s not allowed to be rude when we come bearing gifts.”
Rolfe squeezed her hand back. “Thanks for that.”
She shrugged and smiled up at him. “I’m not leaving all the cookies I’m planning on baking with him, you know. I’m making enough that we’ll have plenty at home.” It wasn’t what he meant when he thanked her and she knew it, but the joke was enough get the dark, haunted look out of his eye, at least for a little while. It didn’t erase it completely, but Roz was glad that she could help tuck it away. Rolfe always deflected when asked questions about his personal life, especially when it came to his immediate family and why he kept mention of them to a minimum when he was far more open about sharing information and introducing her to his cousins, but he’d been letting her in more and more as time went on.
She may not know much, but if she ever were to meet his mother, it would take everything in her not to set her hair on fire the first chance she had.
“Speaking of,” Rolfe began, “I still don’t know what sort of Wintersend gift would be appropriate for him.”
“Hmm.” Roz pushed their cart down the aisle, stopping every so often to grab another too-expensive-for-Past!Roz’s-budget ingredient. “Why don’t we finish up here and when we get home, we can hop online and see what sorts of things we can find that would be nice on that site you got Ravena a gift at? You know, the one with the different sellers and handmade things? If we find something now, we’ll get it in plenty of time for Wintersend.”
He nodded. “Piece of cake, then.”
Her eyes widened. “Oh! Speaking of, I promised your cousin Ada that I would make her a pound cake and you’re completely out of butter. I hope you don’t mind that I’m stocking your kitchen with baking staples, but your oven is way bigger than mine and I can get all my holiday baking done a lot faster instead of having to wait to put things in one dozen at a –”
Rolfe leaned down and pressed a kiss to the crown of her head, quieting the rambling she caught herself doing yet making the blush that had come up from her throat to the tips of her ears burn all the brighter. “I don’t mind. Lead the way.”
As they made their way around the grocery store, both of them picking out things that they liked, Rolfe had to rethink his stance on food shopping. It wasn’t such a bad thing, especially when doing it with someone he cared about.
Even if she did smack him on the arm when he pulled out his credit card to pay for everything.

16, 20, 36!
16. favorite villain?
oooo I'm going to split hairs here because Malvolio is my favorite "villain" but I refuse to call him a villain, he's an antagonist
my favorite villain (as in character who does bad things) is probably Macbeth. I promise i'm not dodging the question i just love villains
20. favorite female character?
Rosalind!! She strikes me as one of Shakespeare's most active female characters and I just love her humor. If I could play any character it'd be Rosalind
36. thoughts on anti-Stratfordians?
I honestly haven't put a lot of thought into anti-Stratfordians! I've never had to like, actually interact with someone who genuinely held those beliefs but I think it might be fun to read an article where someone lays the whole argument out. As far as I understand the stories are along the lines of "kit marlowe faked his death" and "someone had a secret baby with the queen" so it might be fun to read the scholarship, lol.
I was once having a conversation with one of my professors that I still keep in touch with--she's a directing professor with Shakespeare chops but not a Shakespeare scholar herself by any means--and she mentioned that she'd read an article about how Shakespeare might have been a woman and I just didn't have the heart to explain the whole drama to her. I doubt she has that as a genuinely held belief, and I do see how the idea is fun to play with.
So I suppose my overall thoughts are the ideas are kinda funny but mostly harmless!

Lux Radio Theatre (1935-55) was a radio anthology series that adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films (”Lux Presents Hollywood”). These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences in Los Angeles. The primary sponsor of the show was Unilever through its Lux Soap brand.

CAST
Lucille Ball (Maggie Cutler) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. “My Favorite Husband” eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon.
Tumblr media
Clifton Webb (Sheridan Whiteside) had appeared with Lucille Ball in the 1946 film The Dark Corner. He was nominated for three Oscars. Webb had played the role of Sheridan Whiteside on stage for two years.
Eleanor Audley (Mrs. Stanley) appeared in several episodes of Lucille Ball’s “My Favorite Husband” as mother-in-law Letitia Cooper. Audley was first seen with Lucille Ball as Mrs. Spaulding, the first owner of the Ricardo’s Westport home in “Lucy Wants to Move to the Country” (ILL S6;E15). She returned to play one of the garden club judges in “Lucy Raises Tulips” (ILL S6;E26). Audley appeared one last time with Lucille Ball in a “Lucy Saves Milton Berle” (TLS S4;E13) in 1965.
Ruth Perrott (Sarah) played Katie the maid on Lucille Ball’s radio show “My Favorite Husband.” On “I Love Lucy” she played Mrs. Pomerantz in “Pioneer Women” (ILL S1;E25), was one of the member of the Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League in “Lucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dress” (ILL S3;E3), and played a nurse when “Lucy Goes to the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16).
Betty Lou Gerson is best remembered as the voice of Cruella De Ville in the original Disney film One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961).
Stephen Dunn had appeared with Lucille Ball in Miss Grant Takes Richmond (1949).
John Milton Kennedy (Announcer)

The ending of radio’s “My Favorite Husband” episode “Mother-in-Law” (November 4, 1949) starring Lucille Ball is identical to the ending of The Man Who Came To Dinner.

In “Lucy and Viv Reminisce” (TLS S6;E16) on January 1, 1968, while nursing Lucy, who has a broken leg, Viv slips and also breaks her leg. She says she feels just like a female version of The Man Who Came To Dinner.
Tumblr media
“Vivian Sues Lucy” (TLS S1;E10) on December 3, 1962 also has a plot that resembles The Man Who Came To Dinner. Viv injures herself due to Lucy’s careless housekeeping, and is bedridden. Lucy goes out of her way to cater to her every whim, so that she won’t sue!
Although the play is fictional, it draws on real life figures and events for its inspiration.
Sheridan Whiteside was modeled on Alexander Woollcott.
Beverly Carlton was modeled on Noël Coward.
Tumblr media
Banjo was modeled on Harpo Marx, and there is a dialogue reference to his brothers Groucho and Chico. When Sheridan Whiteside talks to Banjo on the phone, he asks him, "How are Wackko and Sloppo?"
Professor Metz was based on Dr. Gustav Eckstein of Cincinnati (with cockroaches substituted for canaries), and Lorraine Sheldon was modeled after Gertrude Lawrence.
The character of Harriet Sedley, the alias of Harriet Stanley, is an homage to Lizzie Borden. The popular jump-rope rhyme immortalizing Borden is parodied in the play.
Tumblr media
Radio critic Dick Diespecker was not exactly enthusiastic about this adaptation.
