Small thought on the end of LiS
I'm going to say something controversial. After all, over half of the folks who played the game disagree... but I think that if it were up to Max Caulfield rather than the player... then there is no Choice. Max would always choose to save Chloe.
My opinion is based off of two things: what Max Caulfield says and what she writes in her journal. The problem is, many folk would skim over the journal or ignore it outright.
Even after a self-destructive "nightmare" sequence trying to drive a wedge between Max and her feelings for Chloe, Max's journal shows how much she cares for Chloe and how her thoughts are fully fixated on keeping Chloe safe. If you listen to her words then you hear a girl who does not want to let Chloe die and would never have asked for the photograph on her own and is only holding it because Chloe forced it into her hand.
And if you look at Max's actions throughout the game... you see someone who doesn't just blindly do what she's told. She acts for herself. So... yeah. Chloe's not going to just convince Max to let her die, especially at the end when Chloe says "I'll support whatever choice you take."
Chloe herself is not offering her life for Arcadia Bay. Yeah, she loves her mom. She cares for her mom (much as any abused child does - abuse will twist you up inside and make you believe that you're a horrible person for causing discord even as you also see this situation as wrong and know you're not to blame for all of it) but she is tossing Joyce, David, and the others out for Max. Because she sees Max is tearing herself up in blaming her actions for causing the Storm. In short... Sacrifice Chloe is Chloe's attempt at keeping Max from feeling guilt over all those deaths, despite the fact that Max would feel far worse for deliberately letting Chloe die.
So... yeah. Max on her own would not offer to sacrifice Chloe. She would not choose that option if the player didn't force her hand.

Chapter Seventeen is up; “A Funeral and a Wake Up Call”
Now, this one is listed as a “Route B” chapter. Meaning it’s set in the “Sacrifice Chloe” route/timeline of this story.
Tumblr media
This chapter was gonna be a lot longer, but I am splitting it for length issues. So instead this one is gonna be a two parter. Originally, I was finally going to introduce Vampire!Chloe here, and cover what would have happened instead of the storm, but it was getting long.
So instead, this chapter is gonna cover the immediate aftermath of Chloe's funeral, and her subsequent transformation into another one of the Red Queen's “daughters”.
The next chapter will cover what happens after Chloe first awakes. There’s really not much else to cover here, so angst, pain and horror aside, I hope you enjoy the read more than I enjoyed the write!

I've finally drummed up to courage to post the first few chapters of a weird lil cyberpunk/sci-fi Pricefield romp I've been working on.
It's the culmination of three months of writing, a lot of support from friends/encouragement from a few fic authors, and listening to Vacant, Daughter, Burial, and Sangam on repeat.
I've got all of "act 1" done and dusted, so I'm going to be putting out 2ish chapters a week until that's finished while I tee up act 2 and 3.
I hope y'all enjoy!

#anime#manga#vanitas no carte#vnc#the case study of vanitas#lord ruthven#august ruthven#hear me out ! ruthven is one of the most intriguing characters to me#despite being portrayed as an antagonist i can't really see him completely fitting into that role / ruthven's actions are ambiguous#yea yeah he's a manipulative mf and is doing bad things now but i don't think that's what it's all about#i believe ruthven is being controlled by something (?) through his right eye and has no much choice in that matter#in the scene where ruthven tried to put a curse on chloe he looks almost shocked when he realizes what he was doing#he also spoke to someone who wasn't there and it seemed to be an act of desperation / even though the war was already over (?) by that time#the eye shows him terrible things ever since the war (and the betrayal that i'm not sure if really happened or was staged to trick him)#i think the continuous trauma the eye causes on him shaped him to be a colder and more cruel person#the opposite of what his original self showed to be (someone more like noe in beliefs and world view)#i guess he truly believes he's doing this for the sake of vampires / that idea of “sacrifices will be necessary for the greater good”#this could explain the alliance w charlatan who seeks to find a way to create more vampires (moreau's research) & rewrite the world formula#also it's clear that ruthven has a distorted view of vampire's malnomen (what caused that? what he saw in the war?)#both for his speech referring to luca's brother “salvation takes many forms (...)” and for the way he uses his own curse on others#until now we know he cursed queen faustina / jeanne / noe (i doubt he would betray the queen without a reason)#maybe his right eye is a malnomen he considers now as a form of freedom / or maybe that allowed him to finally see the “truth”#and yet i think his character is constantly questioning himself about it (in a very sutil way)#(e.g. when he listens noe talk about his ideals / when he sees jeanne dressed like a normal girl after her date)#in these moments we can see him falter a little bit and his expression changes to something more soft and genuine / introspective and sad#the curse he put on noe i think it has more than 1 purpose: 1)trump card against teacher 2)to not kill noe as monsieur spider had demanded#at first i thought it might be for naenia get noe's true name but if that were the case she would have done it by now#and in that moment naenia regained her form for a brief moment in d'apchier mansion and everyone felt her presence#ruthven looked equally surprised so he must not know naenia's true identity either (is he being used?)#lol i could write an essay about vnc... so many tags... lol sry i got carried away!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JULIETTE!!!
The absolute queen you are 🛐🛐🛐
Here’s a little something I drew :))
It’s them trying their best to throw Juliette a surprise party!!
Rosalind and Orion were in charge of the decoration and Rosalind is done because orion keeps on asking my right or your right!!??! When it’s the same right. . . (also orion is putting up the decorations because he is the tallest) (shhh he is concentrating)
Roma, Alisa and Katya were supposed to make the cake and we can see how it’s going 👀
Oliver and Celia took charge of food and flowers respectively. Because Oliver is a very good cook, like he was sewing buttons on blouses, of course he knows how to cook! And Celia helped him out and brought flowers <33
(oliver is smiling because he is looking at celia) (poor celia is absolutely horrified at seeing the state of the house) (also peek their cat~)
Phoebe went shopping with Juliette to distract her and Silas is panicking looking at the time because everything is still a mess and according to what phoebe said before leaving they should be coming back soon!!!!
Will they finish everything before juliette comes back??? Yes because they take another hour to come back! Why? Well somebody has to call from Moscow to wish Juliette too ;)
They gossip for a while with phoebe joining in too (Phoebe and Marshall and Juliette are THE gossip besties) (benedikt only comes on the phone for a minute to wish her and then goes back to whatever he was doing) (the three of them would have gossiped more but somebody else had to use the phone too)

on one hand I feel overwhelmingly compelled to righteously add my name to the wiki as the angel who granted us with the stage play
on the other I'm not the kind of person to vandalize wikis... otherwise poor Jan has to fix my goofing around 😔

Sacrifice Chloe vs. Sacrifice Arcadia Bay
Originally I was going to post this in response to someone else's comments on which endings they enjoyed for LiS. I decided that honestly, the person doesn't need to have me ranting on about this topic as it's long been talked about... but I didn't want to let it just go to waste. So... it's become its own unique post.
It's undoubtedly not a surprise to folk who've seen my LiS post that I always Sacrifice Arcadia Bay. In fact, I've only ever watched the Sacrifice Chloe ending on YouTube. A huge part of that is I play from Max's point of view and I honestly cannot see Max accepting Chloe's death after everything she went through. The only reason she would go back in time is to sacrifice herself so that Chloe and everyone else could live. And from a thematic aspect, if Max's time travel abilities caused the Storm then only with Max's death will there not be a Storm. But I know some folk feel otherwise.
No doubt a big part of my "issues" with the ending come from the... sense of moral superiority the Sacrifice Chloe folk swing about, as if deliberately allowing a girl to die is a noble thing. Oddly enough, the Sacrifice Chloe folk kind of shut up after LiS2 Chapter 5, when it was discovered that three years after being arrested for Chloe's death, Nathan was likely to be getting out of jail (which means he's winning an appeal, and also that anything involving Rachel was hidden or considered contaminated evidence and thus justice doesn't happen).
I have a suspicion that if Nathan and Jefferson had not been shown being arrested or we saw a newspaper headline about Nathan being "vindicated for defending his life against Chloe" then this sense of "superiority" for Sacrifice Chloe would never have come about. But that's just me.
However, there is also another aspect to this and how often I come to the defense of saving Chloe... and that's the misogyny voiced toward both Chloe and Max. I have had arguments from folks who just... went to town attacking my saving Chloe and insisting that I was a horrible person. Inevitably it would come out that they hated Chloe. One person actually admitted that they hated Max, and deliberately made choices to make Max suffer. And to a man, they were all for killing off Chloe, having Max be with Warren, and fuck everything else under the guise of moral superiority. After all, they didn't kill an entire town of people! Hahaha, so much more superior than those Chloe lovers who are mass murderers!
They defended David and got offended when people called Joyce on abuse as they liked their little enabler and said Chloe was bad and deserved to die. And then? They moved on. They had other targets to hate on, rather than some girl who they killed in one playthrough and fuck the other content.
Ah well. I saw clips on the game, and then my spouse (before we even moved in together) urged me to play the game rather than just watch it... and I fell in love. I'm just weird that way, I guess. And I look at the game through Max's eyes. I choose things I think she'd do. Just because it's fun being Max.

[One Last Chance]
Tumblr media
Max jumps back in time to let Chloe meet her original fate and spare Arcadia Bay from destruction.
But as she stares at that photo, doubts about her choice, about all of her choices, assault her. What if she hadn't stayed hidden that day?
Deciding to challenge fate one last time, she offers up her life to save Chloe and spare the town.
But will trading her life suffice to save both the girl she loves and the town they grew up in?

So by the end of Life Is Strange, Max’s six possible kiss statuses are:
She’s never been kissed but has possibly destroyed a town for a girl. If not, then with whom she shares her first magic kiss is left up to your imagination.
She has her first kiss with Warren during the middle of a raging storm.
She has her first kiss with Chloe as a “dare”.
She goes from not kissing anyone to kissing Chloe and Warren in a week.
She goes from not kissing anyone to getting three different kisses during the span of a week.
She’s kissed Chloe twice. Once a quick kiss during a joyful moment, and once a long kiss when they say goodbye.
I think it’s adorable that Max can have her first kiss during the game events if that’s what you decide. How many times has your Max been kissed?

Sacrifice Arcadia Bay & Blood Brothers
I don't know how often fandom talk about this, but I believe that the endings of "Sacrifice Arcadia Bay" and "Blood Brothers" (my canons, so I apparently have a type) have obvious visual parallels. Just look at it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Even ending the scene with "Bienvenido a Mexico" as "Welcome to Arcadia Bay.")
I don't think these parallels are accidental. In fact, it looks more like the ending of "Blood Brothers" is a kind of analogy of "Sacrifice Arcadia". And they are similar not only in terms of visual parallels of the constructed scene.
A Storm caused by Max's force, and Daniel's force. The willingness to sacrifice Arcadia, just not to lose Chloe, and the willingness to demolish the police at the border for stay together with enano. Those whose forces have caused destruction, look at it from the window of the departing car, when the one for whose sake it was done is driving this car. There is a physical contact in order to calm the one who used the force, and show that now they are together, forever and no matter what. They drive off into the sunset to a new life, leaving the damage caused. I hope I was able to explain.
And the main motive of both endings is that it is a necessary sacrifice for Max and Chloe to stay together/for Sean and Daniel to stay together. (these are the only endings in which this is possible)
(And you know that Max, that Daniel and Sean are unfairly called mass murderers by some in the fandom for the choice they made.)
And if you look from this point of view, the moment when Sean visits the destroyed Arcadia may not only be a reference to the first game, but also a direct omen for Sean that he will have to make the same choice as Max in order to stay with Daniel and achieve his main goal (saving Chloe at Max and maintaining fraternal ties with Daniel at Sean's).
Tumblr media
In any case, I am glad with my endings, and although I understand that not all people will agree that they are parallels to each other (because some people who saved Chloe's life don't like the ending of "Blood Brothers", and some people who got the ending of "Blood Brothers" and glad with it, don't like the idea of sacrificing Arcadia), but for me it makes a lot of sense. Both from the visual side of the construction of the endings, and from the point of view of the narrative.
