....And now @coffee-mage-sans-caffeine is playing it, and I am thrilled beyond words. I am bursting with stuff to say about Assassin's Creed: Valhalla (even though it is an objectively rather mid game), but I don't know anybody who's played it IRL who interacts with fandom the way I do.

Basically: if you're an easy sell on story-driven, open-world RPGs, and have no trouble ignoring the dumb parts to focus on the excellent blorbo parts, then you'll probably enjoy AC:Valhalla. If that's not your genre, or if you have super-high standards, then this isn't going to be the game to change your mind.

But my god how queer this game's protagonist is. (‼) For years I legit thought that Eivor was canonically meant to be nonbinary. Whether you play as male or female, they are gender-transgressive in fascinating ways, and that's even completely setting aside the gender-indiscriminate hookups the game lets you have. (Granted, I think Eivor's particular manifestation of queerness was 100% an accident on the part of the devs, but such is life in the world of queer media criticism.)

So yeah. If anyone else wants to join me in the pit of viking blorbos and play through at least through the Ledecestrescire storyline so you can meet both my blorbos, it's either free or very cheap on playstation right now, apparently. :D Join meeeeee~~

I had a dream last night in which Dethklok released deth-eyeshadow palettes. Everyone had their own personalized palette with colors that perfectly fit them and the names for each color in the palette were given by Dethklok themselves. Some refills had funny stamps embossed in the style of each of the band members, and the cover of the packs had their faces on it.

Nathan's palette was mostly black and blood red with names like Death, Murder, Crushed Skull (the only light color there, a milky white), Guts, Hatred, Bloody Vomit, and blue-black color named Abyss.

And when he saw Pickles' palette, he grumbled for a long time that his palette is "not metal" and looked gay, because Pickles' palette didn't have a single dark color, it had a few red-orange shades, but none of them were even brutal blood red (!!!). There was a neon pink shimmer called "Glam" in memory of snakes n barrels, a bottle-green shade called "Booze". The rest of the refills was some trippy bright colors with names like "Party", "Sex on the beach", and there were also a few drug-related named shades: I remember "Acid mushroom", "bad trip" and "cocaine". It looks pretty cool tbh. But Nathan was so fucking pissed off, he was like "Pickles, what kind of gay fucked up shit you put out, it's not even brutal! Okay with Toki put out his candy pink girl shit with glitter and unicorns, 'cause that's Toki, but what's fucking wrong with you? Now, of all the deth-palettes, only mine looks metal, it's fucked up!"

Toki's palette was cute and candy-colored, just the way he likes it. Ufortunately I only remembered a few color names – "Rainbow", "Candy Paradise" and "Magic Unicorn" and there were A LOT of glitter refills in his palette (besides Toki, only Pickles and Skwisgaar palettes had glitters in it, but even they had only one glitter per palette). The cover of the box showed Toki in a cat's body running through a rainbow like in the hamburger time song.

Murderface had the entire palette done in just yellow, ranging from regular yellow to acid yellow to a yellow with red streaks. All the shades were simply called "PISS", "PISS", "PISS", "PISS", "PISS", "ACID PISS", "BLOODY PISS", "PISS". A single black shade in the bottom right corner with the name "Self-hatred" stood out against this. The package was also done in yellow colors, a bit in the Planet Piss style.

Skwisgaar had a cold colors palette.  There were various cold white, gray and blue colors with names like "Ice fjord", "Snow vortex", "Northern wolf", "Viking". There was also a very beautiful golden glitter named "Golden god", Skwisgaar said that it was made of real gold particles. 

Anyway, it's an incredibly cool concept and I woke up feeling really sad that these eyeshadow palettes don't exist in reality because I want to buy them all 😭

Upd: forgot to add another interesting detail. Throughout the dream Exitus from Brendon Small's Galaktikon II was playing somewhere in the background (I didn't fall asleep with headphones on, the song was part of the dream and existed inside it). Namely the lines from "hold my breath, look in my eyes" to "and you live, you live in your heart. And we live, we live with you". So when I woke up I had those lines running through my head.

Just real quick! Something not soapghost (sorry)

I was rewatching httyd 2 (one of my favorite movies btw)

And I remember the first time I watched it, when Stoic was singing to Valka, I hated when Gobber kept interrupting. I thought it was annoying, and didn't belong.

But watching that scene again and I actually kind of like it now. And to properly explain this I just want to put an image in your head.

So imagine this - you, a fresh-faced young viking, has grown up next to his best friend your entire life. He's been beside you through thick and thin, and has never once left your side. Now you yourself have nevr seen any lady that's caught your eye, but your best friend? Oh He's got his heart locked on one. He's quite the fella, has no shortage of women that he could wed. But no, he want the kind-hearted woman who refuses to harm a dragon.

You think maybe she's too soft for this life. She doesn't belong. But you're best friend loves her, and you're his best friend for a eason so you don't say anything.

At first you leave them alone, the waves of love that radiate from them are sickening. They can't keep themselves away from eachother for a second. So you let them be.

Imagine around this time that perhaps you realize lads catch your eye more than lasses do (this is canon btw, and the VA for gobber is also gay)

At some point, after a few moon cycles of your best friend and his lady being together, the three of you start hanging out. You realize this lady is quite nice, still too kind, but you can see why your friend likes her.

At some point you can't keep it in anymore, and confide in your friend that you won't be looking for a lass, but rather a lad. Your friend claps you on the back, and says he's with you always, and it's like a weight has lifted off your shoulders. But then you hear a noise behind you, and you whip around. Standing before you is your friend's lady, and you freeze, but she gives you a nice smile and says she won't say anything. She says the village won't think anything of it, but regardless she won't say anything.

A few moon cycles later and you really do like this lady now. She may not harm dragons, she may fight to save them, but she is just as fierce as any viking you've ever met. And through it all you're best friend and his lady are tag teaming you, trying to set you up with other lads.

These are your best friends, you couldn't imagine your life without them. You do everything together. They never left your side, even when you lost your leg. They've been with you through everything, and you them.

It's been years now. And your best friends are still just as in love now, as they were when they met, in fact they might be even more so. They're married now. They're still trying to set you up with a few guys. You have dinner every night at their house. You cook because like a perfect matching pair, neither of them can cook. And you all laugh and sing together, and you know that no matter what happens it'll all be okay as long as they're here.

They have a baby together, it's a wee little thing. The lady worries something's wrong with him, but your best friend says he's gonna be the greatest chief there ever was.

Then imagine one night there's an especially bad attack, you see your best friends' house catch fire, that's where the baby is, and quiet possibly the lady. You're too far to do anything. But your best friend isn't. He races to the house.

The next thing you know a dragon busts from the roof with the lady in its clutches. Your best friend bursts from the house, little bundle of furs in hand.

After thay day everything changed. It was the same just... less happy. Less kind. But it can be kind of okay with three out of four pieces.

You watch the little boy grow up. Your best friend he's happy, but he worries. He never sings anymore, that's sad. He won't put him in dragon classes because he's scared of losing him too.

Eventually you convince him to allow it. And it goes great until it doesn't. And your best friend disowns his own son for befriending the very beasts that took his lady, the boy's mother.

And then you see that very beast save your best friend's kid's life. And your with your best friend through all of that. Life and death, thick and thin.

And then imagine you find the lady! Or well the kid did. And all of the sudden, this light that died in your best friend's eyes lights up again. And then for the first time in over 2 decades you hear your best friend singing again. Just once. And it's been so long. And then you hear the lady! And now it's like everything is better, just like old times, and you can't help but sing along.

So there! Now you all know some (probably) useless knowledge :)

Abed was interested right away but not too committed to the idea. Then ofc Troy fell hard and, well, the rest you already know <3

At first Troy reacts to Abed kinda like he doesn't want to be weird and a nerd like him and tells him things like "my friends do things for me, not the other way around" while Abed is trying so hard to connect with him and does stuff like pretend to be an alien because Troy said friends mess with each other (makes more sense in context), but by season three Troy thinks Abed is like magical and amazing and even canonically gets upset that he can't have his babies

Bob Zanotto/Helmut Fullbear (Psychonauts 2):

So in-game they're already married and love eachother very much, but I would say it's pretty obvious that Bob fell in love first from his memory vault and wedding vows you hear in-game. Though we don't get to hear Helmut's vows (sad), I wholeheartedly believe that he fell for Bob later and totally fell harder. Also they know eachother so well that when an imaginary Helmut says he doesn't love Bob, Bob instantly knows that's something he wouldn't say. Before I get too rambling here, to sum up my thoughts: I think they are just the sweetest part of the game and more people should know about them.

To be honest, I did kinda submit viking vines because I wanted redemption from them losing the gay elders tournament. And that I the love the ship of course.

Moments in Kinks-related books that I can't stop thinking about, no matter if it's happy, horrible, or sad :

-Michael Aldred. It was really interesting to see Ray's perspective. It was funny to see how he mentioned the word "friendship" right after writing about how Michael listened to the walls at the Connaught Gardens house. And also, Dave's recollection of their breakup. (X-Ray and Kink).

-Staying on the Michael Aldred topic, the fact that he was already trying to hit on Dave the first time they met during Ready, Steady, Go!. And Dave jokingly(?) punching Pete because... I don't remember what Pete did (Ray Davies: A Complicated Life).

-Mitch Mitchell almost joining The Kinks after the Cardiff incident (X-Ray, Kink and Americana I think?).

-["Where the fuck did the Greenlaw come from ?"] (X-Ray, I need to find the page again)

-Ray comparing Pete leaving the band to a divorce. (X-Ray)

-The whole David Watts bit aka. Ray attempts to sell his brother's hand to a man in exchange for a mansion after finding out the guy was gay with Mick's help. Also Mick was dancing around while in birth day clothing (X-Ray and Kink. I'm pretty sure Ray Davies: A Complicated Life also mentioned it).

-The mention of Nobby's picture with the guitar and shovel after he went back to his day job due to Pete coming back in 1966 (X-Ray).

Käpnt'n Blaubärs Seemannsgarn - This was my favourite part of Sendung mit der Maus when I was a child and definitely helped develop my taste for absurd, over-the-top fantasy/fairy tale stories. Also, this serial led Walter Moers to become a novelist, which one can't be too thankful for (and if they ever remake this as 3D animation, I'm biting someone's head off).

Kalkofes Mattscheibe. Look I know. A lot of it has aged very poorly. But Kalki is my problematic fave, he has a good heart even if he has a case of boomer humor & I love him. And he's hilarious.

Hannibal. Whatever you think this tells you about me is probably accurate.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - fun! Whimsy! Gruesome murders! I am still sad this only got 2 seasons.

Torchwood, particularly the 4th season. Something about it just scratches an itch in my brain idk

Carnival Row. Granted I have only seen the first season but the Aesthetic. yk.

I think it's important to include something that I strongly dislike, because this will also tell you something about me, so: Vikings. In a better world, this show wouldn't exist (or if it did, be radically different), but alas. It has done damage that our culture may never recover from. The whole thing is a tragedy from start to finish.

Of course I can't not mention the gay pirate show, but I think for this, it's the other way round: If you know me, you also know about Our Flag Means Death, whether you want to or not XD

you have a sad gay viking story?? please tell me more

lol uhhhh yes? sort of? I belatedly decided to start obsessing over the blorbos from Asscreed: Valhalla. 😎

I'm writing it as a not-fic -- key dialogue and pivotal scenes, connected by summary -- because this thing would be a fucking BEHEMOTH if I wrote it out in full (like, 200k at least) and I know for a fact I wouldn't be able to sustain interest long enough to finish that. (To wit: this is a pairing with all of 21 fics on AO3 -- there is no fandom to help me stay hyped.)

So, not-fic it is, and it is currently 32k words and counting. I'm trying to make it so that readers don't need to have played the game to enjoy it (I joke that you don't need to know canon, but you do need to read the wikipedia entry on the Great Heathen Army). I've written not-fics for witcher stuff before that were well-received despite the unconventional format, though I'm not sure if it'll work as well for blorbos that people aren't familiar with.

In any case, I am enjoying getting to be creative again, because it's been a bit of a dry spell since TWN cratered so hard. 💀 When I run out of stuff to add, I will post the not-fic, and hopefully some of you will give my guest blorbos a spin. :)

When a Queer club is being specifically targeted by a serial killer two gay best friends will have to find a way to not only survive but take down the killer before they're next! Dearie and Cole are the best of friends, they're inseparable, flirty, and unlikable. Dearie and Cole's friendship isn't for everyone, yes they flirt and hook up with each other, yes they can be rude and a bit mean, but they have each other's backs no matter what. In their town there use to be a serial killer known as Mr. Sandman who targeted individuals who were lonely and sad... but that was years ago and he wasn't caught... but suddenly his calling card is showing up and members of the Queer club are being killed off. Now Dearie and Cole have to stick together more than ever but everyone thinks that they did it and they are the main suspects. Now with the whole town thinking it's them, they'll have to figure out who the real killer is and prove that they aren't guilty... but with a bunch of people faking relationships to not be the next target, old town secrets, things are about to get very complicated! I am a huge fan of queer horror and this was a unique homage to Scream (which just happens to be one of my favorite horror movie franchises) and it definitely was a very unique story. It was a fun read and makes you interested to see what happens to the characters. Dearie and Cole aren't likable but thats what makes them interesting and I do enjoy a murder mystery but the plot felt a bit slow at some points but it might just be a me thing, so I would definitely recommend this for fans of queer horror!

🟡 - Happy

99 Always watched over their batch from the very beginning and probably the first real memory they have of an ori'vod paying specific attention to them was 99 stopping what he was doing to check on them after a hard training session. It was right after they got their name, when they still very much did not appreciate it, and the best way they could think of to protest was to go to the opposite end and just completely clam up. Can't be an Echo if you just don't talk. 99 aas the one to check on them all crammed up in a tiny corner and he coaxed them out and got them talking again - when he talked, he made it seem okay to be an Echo, and that was a first step to embracing the name their batch gave them, even if it still took some time to completely accept it.

...This came out more bittersweet than fully happy but. I TRIED.

🔴 - Angsty/Sad

Rex had to be the one to bring Fives up to them after they were rescued. Not because they weren't thinking about him, they were, ever since they came out of the fridge and saw that he wasn't there to greet them. But they knew Fives wouldn't have EVER passed up the chance to save them, so... if he isn't here, they already know why. It'll be painful to find out how he died, they know he's dead, and they're already in so much pain as it is both emotionally and physically that they've been terrified to bring it up. Rex knows what they're doing, so he lets it go for a little while but he can't let them leave with the batch without having this conversation, which is just as painful as they both expected it to be.

🟣 - Romantic/Sexual/Shippy

Echo is SO so shy when it comes to romance, especially coming into the Batch. They're the New person and very much coming in on a highly established team with longstanding relationships between them, and they didn't come in with expectations of ever being anything but the outsider. They are in fact SO resigned to always being the outsider that they do not notice they're being flirted with for several weeks. Tech is the first one to give up on subtlety and just ask them if they're interested in being more than Squadmates.

👪 - Family

Echo, as a reg, has the best relationship with the vode in general. Where the batch is super reluctant to intermingle due to the general tensions that have managed to root in between them and the regs, to Echo they're still very much important Family. And so they take it super personally when things keep erupting into food fight violence. They really thought they'd have more time to try to work on getting everyone to get along.

Unfortunately, instead, Order 66 happened. And now not even their batch family is together anymore. This is just going to make them more desperate though to make everyone get along as they meet up with more vode, though, because goddamnit there are not enough clones left to be fighting like this.

🟡 - Happy

He's actually in a good mood much more often than most people would assume, he just doesn't show it in ways that anyone outside of his batch would notice. Happy Crosshair tends to sit closer to people, sometimes lean his whole weight on them, it's like having a cat really. People that aren't used to it tend to think he's trying to aggressively get in their space to prove a point, which is what Echo thought at first when he started planting himself directly in their way all the time until they actually got to know him more.

🔴 - Angsty/Sad

Do I dare do the Lula headcanon? Do I? I think I do.

Lula wasn't always just the name of a stuffed toy. Once, a few regs got their hands on a tooka that they brought back to Kamino for the cadets to take a look at, since the kids don't get off planet except for the occasional starship tour bringing back small animals is always a huge hit for the children.

Wrecker managed to get his hands on the little tooka and brought it back to their room, named her Lula, and absolutely adored the little creature just as much as he loves his Lula now. It's adorable. But this is a Crosshair headcanon, so where does he come in?

Well, the kaminoans didn't think much of the distraction of a pet, but they let Wrecker keep it for a short while because they saw potential for a test. She turns up missing Wrecker is losing his entire mind, and in the middle of it all Crosshair gets called in for a solo test. There's just one target, and the real test isn't if he can hit her it's if he'll do what he's told even though it will destroy Wrecker. He does, but not because of any real will to follow orders, he just knows it will be worse for them if he doesn't. He makes the replacement Lula to try to make up for it - it's not the same, but it's all he can do. (If this sounds similar to my Twelve Seconds fic it's because I imagine they did this to him multiple times with increasingly brutal targets to make sure he actually would shoot anything he was directed to before putting the batch out in the field.)

🟣 - Romantic/Sexual/Shippy

He probably gets the most hookups outside of the batch and literally no one knows HOW he manages this, because it's not his pleasant demeanor. Hitting on people usually takes the form of antagonizing them and seeing if they smack him or make out with him first and somehow people keep taking the second one.

He also tends to mood drop after them, but still won't recognize that this probably means there's something he's not getting out of it (like actual companionship) and so he comes back upset half the time to lay down with one of them and Radiate Sadness. Usually Wrecker, because he has the most Comforting presence and they've been together the longest by FAR.

👪 - Family

It is pretty much his only priority at all actually. There is a reason he takes it SO hard when he thinks they've abandoned him and it's because he has genuinely not at any point bothered to find anything else to live for. (And the reason he's still going at this point is that he does hope that they'll push back against his attitude and just make him come home so he can save face by not having been the one to give in first.)

Also the softest part of his brain really envies the life Cut and his family have, far away from fighting, but he tries not to listen to that part of himself because he's 1000% sure that kind of life is not for them.

And SOFT BOY ATHELSTAN:

🟡 - Happy

Athelstan keeps all of his journals as they fill up, so that he can look back on them and reflect. This means that he ends up with dozens of these, and he can open any of them to a random page and easily guess when he did it just by what he finds there. Even if it's just a sketch, how he draws the world and people around him changes as he shifts from being afraid to truly feeling like he belongs.

This means he can go back and usually pinpoint right around where he started to fall in love with someone, because he can see it in how his art of them changes.

🔴 - Angsty/Sad

Even years down the line he still has nightmares about his dead brothers. He's tried to move on from it and make peace and in many ways he has, but the nightmares haven't gone anywhere. Sometimes he thinks he's forgotten his brothers faces but then the bad dreams make it very much apparent that he hasn't.

These are also the only dreams that Ragnar can't help much with, which drives him insane because Ragnar HATES to think there's anything he can't fix. But this is one of them.

🟣 - Romantic/Sexual/Shippy

His favorite way to wake up is kisses, so he gets them every morning now from SOMEONE. Usually Ragnar or Floki will get him up this way but if they're not available metamours will do it (Helga especially loves to give him an adorable kiss to the cheek and make him make a SQUEAK of surprise.)

Of course being in a partner's arms just makes it better, please hold him while he wakes up. (This also helps when he's been having bad dreams, which he has OFTEN. As long as they're not the above mentioned brother nightmares that is.)

👪 - Family

So obviously my headcanons and fic go off the rails sometime around season three but I adore Alfred too much to let him go just because of something as small as 'Athelstan isn't fucking Judith in this version' so therefore. Athelstan has baby Alfred with someone else, in this verse Helga. They're not Together as a couple, but they're close and Helga is happy to parent a child with him, once a polycule becomes Complex enough it's all just coparenting anyway.

Also they're precious together so sue me. He loves her, and whether it's romantic or not really doesn't matter to him, she's just important to him.

It's NYE 2022, and I'm hanging out with my dog so he doesn't get scared by the fireworks (which isn't going to happen because he's old and deaf AND it's raining here). But here I am, drinking Prosecco and looking at my books I read this year. Honestly, kind of embarrassed at the low number and the genre-heavy slant. It was a horror/mystery-tinged year!

I've spent a lot of my free time writing this year and trying to figure out how to write and read post-work without staying up so late I'm a zombie the next day. I'm feeling hopeful that next year I can read AND write more than I did this year.

Below are my Best of 2022:

Non-Fiction: A History of Vikings was absolutely fascinating. Neil Price is one of the top archaeologists in this time period/geographic area, and it was so interesting to hear how much early Scandinavians differed from the legend/Hollywood version of Vikings.

Short Stories/Novellas: Terminal Boredom felt dated, because it was written in the 70s and only recently translated, but a couple stories were sharp and sad and stuck with me for a while after reading them.

Her Body and Other Stories was an incredibly strong debut. The middle part of the book is a bizarre, sad piece that's basically a Law and Order: SVU fan fiction (like, literally I cannot stress this enough, Elliot and Stabler are the main characters in this story), and the shorter stories are very evocative and bold.

Poetry: Deaf Republic is a series a poems that all tie together, and tell the story of people in the middle of war/political unrest in their country. The author Kaminsky was born in Odessa before the Soviet Union dissolved, so the Russia/Ukraine conflict and war in general are major themes in the book.

Novels: Last Night at the Telegraph Club and The Hollow Places stuck with me the most this year, which really surprised me. The former is a 1950s period piece about a Chinese immigrant in San Francisco struggling with the discovery of her homosexuality. The latter is about a divorcee in her late 30s who loves fan fiction and discovers a portal to multiverses inside her uncle's occult museum. Both really spoke to me in different ways, but for similar reasons. Telegraph Club reminded me of being a little weirdo growing up in the South and finding a place of comfort/acceptance at gay bars/drag shows, and Hollow Places reminded me of my life now in my 30s. Still looking for that portal to multiverses though (I'll find it eventually!).

Honorable Mention: The Employees because it was so cold, yet fascinating in its narrative. It's a sci-fi story where every short chapter is narrated by a different nameless character. @screenshotsofdespair gave it a shoutout earlier today which really warmed my heart. If you like that blog, or sci-fi, or the weirdness and despair of what it means to be a human, I think you'll like this.

The anime cut out that Askeladd’s band was regularly raping women. Given that the anime also added a lot of extra scenes, I can kinda see why people watched it and were like “okay cool, so these vikings are Gay and Adoptive Fathers” or whatever. But even if you only watch the anime, I feel like coming out of the story w that being your takeaway has to be the result of fandom goggles, like, it’s the only way you know to interact w media. The same way dudebro fans go “why did the violence go away, this is boring”

Even if we’re not talking about rapists and rape-enablers and mass murderers, I’m just so frustrated this is the level we’re on when it comes to media. Like, I don’t have an issue with Thorfinn/Canute, don’t really have a reason to, but I’m also not interested in shipping them and I’m sad that I’ve seen 100+ shipping posts about them and very few posts about their narrative foiling and its significance to the themes. Like. I haven’t seen a SINGLE person talk about Canute’s realization about love and God, which to me was one of the most pivotal parts of the prologue.
