The DMMd Stage Plays
No one asked, but I can’t shut up about them, so I thought I’d talk a bit about these.
There’s a tradition, it seems like, of making stage plays about just about every subject imaginable in Japan. Search any anime you’re into on youtube and add “stage play”, and you will find everything. There are stage plays for Haikyuu!, Demon Slayer, SK8 the Infinity, Sailor Moon, Persona 5, Sarazanmai, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Given, Ace Attorney... that’s just off the top of my head. The productions are always creative and interestingly staged. If you’re into theater at all, I do recommend investigating.
It was a bit of a surprise, no doubt, that a stage play for DMMd ran in 2019, given that the game came out seven years prior; still, it did well enough to warrant another run, so we can’t argue with that. The production ran over a two-week period (stage plays don’t seem to be long-running; following any of the actors on social media, you’ll see they do several plays a year), and what’s particularly fascinating is that they did all of the love interest routes in that time period on alternate days.
Tumblr media
The cast:
Nagata Seiichiro as Aoba
Kohatsu Allen as Koujaku
Yamagata Yuki as Clear
Tomizono Rikiya as Noiz
Takanori Yamaki as Mink
Yamazaki Shogo as Ren/Sei
Iwaki Naoya as Mizuki
Tominaga Yuya as Virus
Yoshioka Yu as Trip
Hayato Moriya as Akushima
The cast is rounded out by four dancers who added to the background in a variety of ways; Hayato Moriya also played multiple roles as a member of Bug Bomb, the person welcoming Aoba to Platinum Jail, and so on.
This was apparently not the highest-budget production out there, but they got around that with a stage resembling a generic Rhyme field onto which could be projected a variety of images, using that and lighting to make its appearance change significantly to the plot.
Unfortunately, due to (I believe) contractual issues, DVDs were not released for this production. They were livestreamed, and the final route was pro-filmed and can be rented on JP Hulu and U-Next, but that’s all we got. Sadface. However, there was a special after-show “curtain call” segment where the audience was allowed to film on their phones, resulting in a wave of clips that can be viewed here. In a couple of cases, Goatbed also performed “AI Catch” for this segment.
There was a wave of merch released for the plays, including bromides (postcard-size, collectible pictures, many of which can be found on secondary markets), a pamphlet, can badges and such. One presumes we will have another round of these with the new production.
Now the new production is coming up at the end of April 2023, and in addition to being “evolved” from the last one, a Virus/Trip route has been added. It’ll be interesting to see how this goes down, since before, it was only hinted at during the final route.
Recently and devastatingly, it was announced that Seiichiro would not be able to perform as Aoba again. While he was part of the initial lineup for this new cast, the official twitter stated that due to illness, he was being forced to step down and the role was recast with understudy Tsuchiya Naotake. I sincerely hope that Seiichiro is getting better and wish him all the best. Hopefully this is something he’ll be able to bounce back from. What’s particularly shattering is that Seiichiro has been working with Shogo on the recent run of Touken Ranbu in whatever incarnation it’s on now, so to have them not be reunited again absolutely sucks.
In other casting news, both the roles of Trip and Akushima were recast. Trip is now being played by Isono Dai, and Akushima by Makita Tetsuya. Presumably the dancers are all new as well; at the very least, I don’t recognize any of their faces, though as all the cast photos have everyone masked for safety, that makes it more of a challenge. The play is being directed by the same person as before, however.
As to whether DVD/BRs will be released this time, we can only hope that the legal issues have been worked out and we’ll get actual releases. If not, I’m sure there will at least be livestreams, though I haven’t seen anything announced yet. We will no doubt need a VPN for them at minimum; beyond that, we’ll have to wait and see.

Kashira, Kashira Ikuharaesque, been awhile since my last sent Drum, huh? Anyways, here ya' go. uu (link) "This is our Survival Strategy, this is the Proof of Our Existence..." CM for the movies on Blu-Ray/DVD! Quote is what I got from what Momoka says. u///u' and (link) here's the opening to the first movie in all Sarazanmai-esqe glamour! I guess not really important, but did notice it is missing a couple of seconds from it, cause before that, there's the sound of passing by trains with 3 spinning penguin insignias, before each of them change into the "95" symbols, and lastly stopping with "The Destination of Fate" sign, as we hear the sound of crowds getting off. Again, here's hoping they localize/dub the movies here!... ><'
Hello!!! It's great to hear from you again 🥰 thank you so much for sending the links! I haven't been able to keep up with the announcements (the uni is biting my ass), but OH MY GOD THE INTRO.... Somebody else hit chills when another rendition of children of fate dropped or is it just me

What anime should be on your watch list??
Oh, like what anime do I recommend to people?
Idk, I don’t watch that much anime these days.
I’ve enjoyed Given, Hunter x Hunter, Haikyuu (though idk if I can recommend this one anymore knowing it’s going to end in two movies when it needs at least two seasons), Samurai Flamenco, uh, I liked Sarazanmai but idk if I can recommend it.
I liked the movie weathering with you.
I don’t recommend Naruto and if I do recommend it, just read the manga instead.
Now if you’re asking which anime are on my watch list, ie, what are anime I think might be good but haven’t gotten around to yet then Mushishi, Natsume Yuujinchou (I own the entire series on some bootleg dvds lmao), Kids on a Slope, Summertime Rendering, I’m mildly curious about Shokei Shoujo no Virgin Road, the mo dao zu shi donghua, uh, the star wars anime, mob psycho 100, and probably more. I’m REALLY bad about getting to anime I wanna watch. There’s like a million I have wanted to get to for years like Shouwa Genroku… or Nabari no Ou whcih I have been mildly interested in watching for like 15 years lmfao
I really need specifics here like… is there a specific type of anime you’re interested in?
Shounen, shoujo, seinen, josei, romance, action, gay shit, peaceful, slice of life?? Movie?? One short seasons vs never ending bullshit?? Or the lucious genre of “something gay is happening but in the background and never in a confirmed way.”
Like I need more anon!!
And like does “anime” include manga recs cause that is also a whole other conversation like…

Re: the Utena reblog... It’s story time.
I discovered Revolutionary Girl Utena when I was in my early 20s, just on the verge of becoming a serious anime/manga fan. It soon became one of my favourites, to the point of re-watching the anime and re-reading the manga regularly, and it still has a permanent place in my top 5 anime over 15 years later.
I introduced my ex to it, when we first moved in together - they saw my DVD collection and asked for recommendations, so we watched Utena together.
We were both queer AFAB nonbinary folk who’d grown up being excluded for not being properly feminine, so Utena was a big deal for both of us. It became Our Thing. Like we quoted it and theorised about it and talked about getting matching rose tattoos and even talked about an Utena-themed wedding.
Then the ex turned out to be a cheating lying cheat, and I moved out and took my anime and manga with me, and didn’t want to watch Utena for a long time.
I had a close friend who supported me during the break-up, and who I even ended up house-sharing with for a year. He had a period of illness where he was housebound and wanted stuff to do, so I lent him some manga, including Utena. He quickly got seriously into it, and borrowed the DVDs too - we didn’t watch it together, but we talked about it a lot - he enjoyed the magical reality aspects, and as he was working on his Theatre Studies masters at the time, he saw a lot of links between it and the expressionist plays he liked.
Then he turned out to be a backstabbing rat who took his mental health issues out on me, and I moved out and took my anime and manga with me (he still has two of my volumes of FAKE) and I haven’t watched or read Utena for a long time.
Then Sarazanmai happened, and I re-watched Mawaru Penguidrum and watched YKA to refamiliarise myself with Ikuhara’s work, and I desperately wanted to rewatch Utena, but every time I thought about it, I remembered how much I’d been hurt by people I shared it with. It is a beautiful, incredible story, in all its iterations, and I wish I could talk more about and share more of it, but it carries a lot of hurt for me as well.
There was no serious point to sharing all of that, other than just venting because I am lonely and still adjusting to being in a new town where I don’t know anyone. But I still feel like if I ever reach a point where I can share Utena with someone again, it’s going to be because that person is worth reliving all the hurt I still associate with it.

Where to buy Sarazanmai merch and goods from
Tumblr media
I’ve seen a lot of people ask this question so I figured I’d make a more extensive list with links to everything for all the lazy people out there who need that small push (or those who have no idea where to start looking).
I’ve been using mostly CDJapan and Amazon JP for my manga and book purchases. As for small merchandise I’m a loyal Amiami customer (I was once told they offer the cheapest prices and they have a points system so now I’m stuck with them lmao).
All these sites offer service in English and are very easy to use. I’ve been a customer for years with no problems whatsoever.
CDJapan offers several different shipping options whereas Amazon doesn’t offer me any and send everything through DHL. DHL has been A LOT faster (we’re talking a few days) and has cost me about the same as CDJapan’s cheapest (reasonable) shipping option SAL (which has always taken me about 3 weeks, old followers might remember the pain of waiting for Rutile to arrive every other month...). Amiami and HobbySearch (which is another good and reliable site for merch purchases) both offer different shipping options.
The prices I’m giving here are WITHOUT TAXES because if you’re outside of Japan you don’t have to pay for them. Note that some sites (like Amazon) includes them in the price. They won’t charge you for them.
1000 yen is about 9 USD or 8 EUR.
BOOKS
Reo to Mabu: Futari wa Sarazanmai - 660 yen
CDJapan Amazon JP
Sarazannai Novel vol 1 - 1400 yen
CDJapan Amazon JP
Sarazanmai Official Starting Guide - 1700 yen
CDJapan Amazon JP
MUSIC
Sarazanmai OST - 3000 yen
CDJapan Amazon JP
Sarazanmai no Uta / Kawausoiya CD - 1200 yen
CDJapan Amazon
Stand By Me (Limited Anime Edition CD + DVD) - 1389 yen
CDJapan Amazon JP
Massara (Regular Edition) CD - 1000 yen
CDJapan Amazon JP
BD & DVD
Sarazanmai vol 1 Blu-Ray - 3800 yen (release June 26)
CDJapan Amazon JP
Sarazanmai vol 1 DVD - 2800 yen (release June 26)
CDJapan Amazon JP
Sarazanmai vol 2 Blu-Ray - 6800 yen (release July 24)
CDJapan Amazon JP
Sarazanmai vol 2 DVD - 5800 yen (release July 24)
CDJapan Amazon JP
I’m sure you’re able to find the rest of the BD’s and DVD’s in the recommended sections. Note that their covers haven’t been released yet so they currently have the Sarazanmai key visual as a temporary cover. Also note that they’re in Japanese ONLY. There will most likely be an English release, but it hasn’t been announced yet.
The first volume is cheaper because it only includes 1 episode (and a bunch of extras). The second and consecutive volumes will contain 2 episode each (and a bunch of more extras).
MAGAZINES
spoon.2Di Vol.49 - 1194 yen
Sarazanmai back cover featuring ReoMabu with irises
CDJapan Amazon JP
spoon.2Di Vol.50 - 1194 yen
Sarazanmai front cover with the main cast dressed in kimono
CDJapan Amazon JP
Animage July 2019 Issue - 1000 yen
Sarazanmai front cover featuring the Alice in Wonderland themed illustration
CDJapan Amazon JP
PASH! July 2019 Issue
Sarazanmai back cover with the three boys dressed in sailor uniforms
CDJapan Amazon JP
OTHER MERCH
AmiAmi HobbySearch CDJapan
I hope you found this helpful. Please consider supporting Sarazanmai and its creators! Buying the Blu-rays would help the most, their sales are a direct way of seeing how popular a series is, but every little thing counts, even if it is just buying a strap or a badge!

sorry to disturb you houkago. Nino006 on twitter posted a sample image for sarazanmai that refeers to it being included in a "box volume". How can i get this image? Is it included with manga or Blu-Ray/DVD?
Tumblr media
This illustration will be used for a box to store your Blu-Ray’s or DVD’s in. You can get it by buying every single volume, collecting codes that come with them and redeeming them online. Unfortunately it’s only eligible for those who live in Japan.

i don't understand what's the deal with the manga and novel, it's a ikuhara thing? he likes to have all of these stuff releasing almost at the same time as the anime? what I care is, what's the original source?
Yes. It’s an Ikuhara thing, but also just marketing. The Sarazanmai manga is a spin-off story so it acts as support for the anime and fleshes out the characters more. That is, as long as it’s actually related to the anime and not an AU story. We don’t really know it yet.
The novel is written by Ikuhara and Utsumi, the same people who are writing the anime scripts. So far it’s been the same, but with some extra narration and some scenes have been shuffled around. It doesn’t matter to them that it spoils (half) the story. The fun is watching the events unfold and to see how they’re depicted in the anime. The novel might even make things easier to follow and understand, since Ikuhara anime can be quite cryptic.
To answer your question of what’s the original source, Sarazanmai has always been marketed as Ikuhara’s new original anime. The novel got made to give them more publicity. It’s also a fairly easy way for them to earn more money, since it’s expensive to make anime and Ikuhara’s series usually don’t sell that many BD’s and DVD’s.
