THE VIENNA SCHOOL OF FANTASTIC REALISM
The Vienna School of Fantastic Realism was an art movement founded in post-WWII (1946) Austria by a group of young, mostly Austrian artists. These artists attended the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts together, and their teacher and mentor was Albert Gütersloh, who himself had studied with the famous iconoclastic Viennese painter Gustav Klimt. Gütersloh emphasized the techniques of the old masters, giving his students a grounding in realism, and exposing them to the clarity and detail of early German and Flemish painting. Fantastic Realism combines these Northern Renaissance techniques with religious and esoteric symbolism and elements of psychoanalysis, and their figures, while rendered with a hyper-realist attention to detail, are often distorted and stylized in the same manner as the early Northern masters they emulated. Having initially associated itself with Surrealism, the differences between Fantastic Realism and Surrealism soon became evident. Orthodox Surrealists such as André Breton demanded that painting not be subject to any control by reason, whereas most of the Fantastic Realists created artificial spaces of fantasy which they then interpreted with their intellect. (Paraphrased as best as possible from a grammatically garbled online article.)
I have included here the work of artists who were followers of, or greatly influenced by, the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism and carry on their legacy.
