Fic: A Gift For The Worst
For @shattsunday Holiday Exchange!
Pairing: Matt Holt/Shiro
G Rated, Modern Setting, Meet-Cute.
Wordcount: 2.1k.
If there is any decent reason for Keith to want that stupid videogame, it escapes Shiro's understanding. But what he really didn't expect was having to fight a complete stranger over it, in the most bizarre showdown: Whose sibling is the worst?
Despite that terrible name, it has nothing to do with MY gift to the great @ahatfullofoctarine !! I’m your secret Santa and I hope you enjoy the story, your prompt was super fun and I hope I made it justice! Happy Holidays!

ShattSunday Challenge - January Prompts
These prompts are open to everyone! The only restriction is that they are the good Shatt, that is, they are for the Shiro x Matt pairing =)
When creating content for the ShattSundayChallenge, you can choose any one of the prompts on this post from any of the categories, or even choose multiple prompts for different works (or even combine multiple prompts into one work). Basically, do as many as you like, however you like, within the month.
The challenge will run until the first Sunday within the following month, when we will also be switching to the new month’s prompts. Following the first Sunday of a new month, we will make a post featuring links and descriptions of all the content created for the previous month’s prompts. So please be clear that your content is for the challenge so it is not missed!
When you post your content, please tag the post with #shattsundaychallenge and/or #shattsunday so that we can see and reblog your content the following Sunday (or same day if you post on Shatt Sunday). Mentioning us ( @shattsunday ) on the post itself will also make it even easier for us to find your content!
If you are posting your content on AO3, please feel free to add it to the ShattSunday Collection!
(Bear in mind that for your post to show up on our tracked tags, the tag must be within the first 5 tags on the post. This is a tumblr limitation, not our own.)
We use #shattsundaychallenge on the blog to sort all challenges/fills for our prompts, and use #jan2019challenge for this month specifically.
Categories:
A Scenario/Situation
One is famous. The other is a hotel concierge.
In the middle of the night
A Theme/Single Word:
New year/New beginnings
Snowfall
A Sentence:
"Do we got beef? Do we need to have words?"
“Maybe you forgot what it’s like to touch and be touched?”
Take 1 line and write the next 5:
Oftentimes, he just didn’t know what the other was thinking.
This would be the best anniversary dinner if it’s the last thing he does.
Even if you end up not quite adhering to the guidelines (e.g. your ‘take 1 line and write the next 5’ ends up long), don’t worry about it! Just post and tag as normal, and we will welcome it with open arms!
If you can’t get your content in on time, don’t worry about that either! We’ll still reblog your content, you just won’t make it onto the masterpost of Challenge inspired works.

Shatt Week Day 4: Garrison/Copiloting
There’s a reason that Matt never practiced piloting for the Kerberos mission.
(I love Shiro too but I would throw him out of the simulator in .5 seconds if he did this to me. Hey, my ship, my rules.)

I was trying to work on the next chapter of TLA but my brain decided it would rather spit this out for @shattsunday instead.
Imagine an AU where Matt, maybe due to one too many guards beating on prisoners for fun, or injuries sustained during the escape from prison, loses all his memories of who and what he is. It takes a while, but he learns to cope, even making a home for himself among the rebels, but he can never shake the fact that no one can tell him his home planet, his species, or even his own name. It always feels like there's something missing, people that should be there but aren't and he can't even find their names somewhere beyond his tongue.
Eventually, though, the rebels team up with Voltron. And in a twist of fate, he happens to be the closest engineer handy when the Green Paladin needs technical back-up in the middle of a battle. He joins the paladin and they work seamlessly together, and when it's done the paladin's laugh of pride tingles in the back of his skull. And then they pull their helmet off and he freezes, it can't be. "Who are you? And why do you look like me?"
They tell him. All the paladins do, people who can tell him his name and his species and so much more that supposedly fits in the blank space inside his head. But he has to take their word for it. It might as well be a history lecture about ancient Altea for all it feels like they're talking about him. He stays, though, settles in, learns to answer to the name Matt and use the strange, clumsy language (English, they tell him) that he'd almost forgotten he could speak, and pretends not to notice when they flinch at the blank looks he gives their jokes and references. They tell him more, but he still finds himself having to take it on faith.
One night, though, when he and Pidge (his sister, the one he didn't even know he had) are working late, he finds himself turning to make a comment over his shoulder like he has to no one so many times before, and she's there and fires back a reply just as automatic. It's not until later that he realizes ‘oh. She's the one I kept expecting to be there’. The stories feel a little more real after that.
And then there's Shiro. Matt can't help but feel drawn to him, want to be around him. There's something about him that makes the two of them fit together so naturally, like an interlocking puzzle, and every time Shiro smiles Matt tries not to think about what his lips would feel like against Matt's own. Because as much as he's attracted to Shiro, as right as this feels, despite knowing he's fallen hard and fast and with his entire being, there's something in Shiro's eyes that stops him. A sadness, a hesitance in the moments where Matt thinks Shiro might just feel like the same way about him. They'll spar and pin and be inches apart and then Shiro will abruptly leave. Or cuddle on movie nights, Shiro's body fitting perfectly against his own, until Shiro suddenly stiffens and gives him two inches more space.
Matt can't be upset. He's seen the shadowed eyes of those who've lost lovers too many times before.
This goes on for months, Matt oscillating between irresistably drawn and trying to respect Shiro's loss, before Pidge grabs him and pulls him aside. "Why haven't you kissed him yet?"
He explains what he can see. Pidge looks at him for a long moment, expression thunderstruck before realization crosses her face. "Right. You don't remember that, either." She shakes her head in exasperation, and pulls a necklace chain out from under her shirt, a ring glinting in the light that she presses into his palm. "He lost you, idiot. Now go get him back." Matt stares at his sister, at the ring she kept secret for him while he went into space with the man he loved once before. Then goes.
Shiro nearly topples over when Matt grabs him outside the training room and yanks him down into a kiss. When they finally break apart, Matt can see the glimmer of hope in the other man's eyes. "No." Matt says sadly. He wishes that was the case. "I still don't remember. But that doesn't mean we can't be together." He holds out the ring in his left hand, still looped on the chain. A silent promise for the future. "You're the man so nice I loved you twice."

Slacking off Work
Pairing: Matt/Shiro Word Count: 4,022 Rating: Explicit Summary: Shiro tags along as Matt spends the day out in a shack in the desert monitoring the effects of a dry lightning storm on an experiment alloy. It doesn't take as long as he expects to distract Matt from his work. Notes: Written for the July Challenge Prompt ‘In a Thunderstorm’ for @shattsunday.
(AO3 Link)
Excerpt:
“How long is this experiment going to take?” Shiro asks, peering over Matt’s shoulder at the screens in front of him.
Lightning flashes again, turning the inside of the tiny shack a blinding white, as well as turning the screens white where Matt is watching the security feeds from outside.
“When the storm ends or the alloy is damaged beyond repair by the lightning strikes,” Matt replies, a hint of warning in his tone.
Shiro doesn’t think he’s asked that already, but it’s been a couple of hours, and he’s getting restless enough to probably repeat himself without realising.
“When was the storm forecast to end?” he asks.
Matt turns from the screens to glare at him. “You asked to come with me, I told you that you’d be bored.”
“I’m not bored,” Shiro lies. Sitting in a tiny shack in the middle of the desert for the duration of a thunderstorm still sounds more appealing than the event Shiro’s skipping out on. His promotion had been nothing but exciting until he realised it meant he had to attend formal events in dress uniform.
Matt snorts but doesn’t call him out on his lie, tapping out some notes on his tablet as he watches the screen. Shiro doesn’t see the point of it. They could leave the computers running and analyse the data in the morning. Matt always insists on doing it manually even when it’s someone else’s experiment he’s been assigned to.
“What is this, the fourth time they’ve tested that material?” he asks, sitting heavily in his chair again.
“Fifth,” Matt replies, his tone dark.
Shiro takes in his expression, the hard set of his jaw. “You think it’s a waste of time, don’t you?”
“I’m just doing my job, Shiro,” comes the tired reply.
Unable to help himself, Shiro perks up. He knew this wasn’t one of Matt’s experiments, but he didn’t realise he hated it that much. There’s a much higher chance of getting him to slack off if he hates the experiment. Especially when he doesn’t really need to be watching it so closely in the first place.
“The computers are doing your job,” he says, reaching out and turning Matt’s chair until he’s facing him. Matt glares but doesn’t turn back to face the desk. “You don’t really need to be watching the feeds.”
“His monitoring program might as well have been written by a dog,” Matt mutters.
Shiro slides his own chair closer, wincing at the squeaky sound of the wheels straining on the uneven floor.
“But I bet you fixed that in the first five minutes,” he says. “I bet it can easily run on its own with no errors now.”
Matt grumbles something under his breath and Shiro knows he has him. He rests his hands on Matt’s knees and drums out a random rhythm with his fingertips. “You know, it’s not often we get to be all alone somewhere with no chance of someone walking in on us.”
“Shiro,” Matt warns.
“All alone in a shack out in the desert,” Shiro continues, sliding his hands a little higher up Matt’s thighs. “No security cameras. No random room inspections.”
“No lube,” Matt replies, even though he’s leaning closer to Shiro.
Shiro reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small tube with a smug smile.
“Oh my god, Shiro,” Matt groans. “You have no shame.”
“None whatsoever,” Shiro chuckles, leaning over and kissing the top of his nose.
Matt scrunches it up and then turns back to the computer with a sigh. With a few clicks of the mouse and a couple of lines in a command prompt box, he turns back to Shiro and climbs right onto his lap.
“You are a terrible influence, Takashi.”
