My theory on why Alice in Borderland didn't become as popular as "Squid Game":

This is a question I've seen all over the internet and I've thought about it a lot.

There's two reasons and the 1st one is more obvious than the 2nd one:

1. Everything from Korea is here highly popular right now.

And even though both series come from Asia, in terms of popularization they don't have the same impact (At least right now because Japan has been exporting media for ages as well).

2. There's a phenomenon of projection and catharsis:

Let me explain. I think Squid Game became more popular because it's easier for people to project themselves in comparison to AIB.

SG became a global phenomenon because many people in countries, countries that suffer the economic, social and political problems that are portrayed in SQ explicitly and implicitly, can relate to it.

Now, I have to clarify that I'm posting this after watching S2 of AIB. And yes, there's a huge and deep problematic portrayed in it as well. But the superficial impact of its problematic is more subtle than the one portrayed in SG where the characters might not even have the time to think about "the meaning of their life" because they're too worried trying to survive, one day at a time, a world driven by the power of money.

Inevitably media leads viewers to ask themselves: "what would I do if I was in this situation?" And the situations portrayed in SG are relatable in a superficial level. And that, my friends is enough to attract people.

The games in SG are also really simple and they give the viewers the opportunity of thinking that they could somehow manage to survive and get the prize. Or, if they don't survive, they can at least escape an unfair world.

On the other hand, the games portrayed in Alice in Borderland are much more complex and often times they leave you thinking: "This is too complicated, there's no way I could survive this"

(Now, if this is not your case and you think you can outsmart every game that's valid too but I don't think it's the mentality of most viewers)

In season 2 we learn that the situation the characters are experiencing is more complicated and metaphysical because their new life in "Borderland" depends on their will to live. But that is only reveled until season two (at least for people who haven't read the manga).

But if we ignore that, if we only have what we're given in season 1 the series makes the viewers understand that you have to be super smart like Arisu, Chiahiya or Ann; you have to be incredibly strong and fast like Aguni, Usagi and Kuina in order to survive; or you have to be strongly driven by violence and revenge like Niragi.

(Again, I understand that it's more complicated than that but I'm trying to explain the general perspective of the public)

And that breaks the illusion, the projection that the average viewer has and that Squid Games achieves throughout the episodes.

English is not my first language and I'm not sure if I'm making sense but yeah...

In conclusion:

Alice in Borderland is objectively better in terms of narrative and concept but there's a reason why it's not as popular as Squid Game and that reason is completely valid as well.
