In the spring of 1890, newlyweds Walter and Mary Ellen Twining arrived in the small village of Chestnut Ridge, Nevada. There laid a dilapidated ranch, which Walter had purchased sight-unseen from a New York magazine.

The journey out was a hard one for the northerners, losing quite a bit of furniture and oxen on their trail. But the two were young, overly optimistic, and confident in setting their roots in this strange new place.

Part 6: 1899-1900

The funeral was a quiet affair. John and Richard dug out the grave and a church official said a few words.

"Richard, promise me you'll be a good boy. Your siblings depend on you more than ever"

"I promise, father"

None of them really got over the loss of Edmund, but the siblings grew older regardless. The triplets started school the same year Edmund died, and Mary became a toddler.

After making yet another loan payment they still had a little money left and decided to expand their farm. Richard and Albert helped his father every single day. Richard never complained, realizing that his parents were still hurting - just as he was. His younger brother hated gardening and complained about it non-stop, "Why can't I just play? Paige and Etta never have to help on the farm. Life is so unfair!"

Albert really disliked school. "It's too hard! No one can understand anything. And our teacher is mean! He never explains anything"

"Don't be silly", Eloise told him, "Look at your siblings. They have no problems. If you don't understand something, maybe you just need to study more".

When not helping their mother Etta liked to sneak off into the living room to play chess. She never saw her mother play and assumed girls weren't allowed, "but I'll do it anyway. It's too much fun"

A couple of weeks pass and there is yet another fire. This time in the dining room. Luckily, no one got hurt this time around, but John decided there and then to invest some money into hooking up his home to the grid, hoping to avoid any more fires in the future.

Sunday brought disheartening news for Louisa, her Aunt Amelia had sent word that she would be traveling to Windenberg to collect her niece and escort her to finishing school. A spot had suddenly opened up at the very same prestigious ladies academy that Amelia and Maude had attended.

“I’ve already packed your trunks, Darling. All you have to do is get a good nights rest so you are well enough to travel tomorrow,” Maude wraps her arm around her daughter, giving her shoulder a little squeeze. Louisa musters all of her might not to cry in front of her mother.

“May I go for a walk after supper tonight?” She asked quietly, afraid if she raised her voice it may break.

“It’s far too cold, Lou. I won’t have you catch your death out there before your big day tomorrow,” Maude stands up from sitting beside her daughter. “Could you set the table dear?” With that, she left her daughter to finish preparing the meal in the kitchen.

Louisa couldn’t leave without saying goodbye to Edward.

The next twelve months were rather calm for the Harrell family. Ethel Northrop had decided to attend university in the city after that tumultuous summer, leaving behind her good friend Francis in Brindleton. Mandeok found it difficult to see her son so downtrodden after the departure of his closest friend, but if anything, it inspired him to attend the local college as well.

Francis was seventeen, so he still lived at home, but he was working steadily on his degree in architecture and set to graduate at the same time as Ethel. Francis said he wanted to be there for his best friend as soon as she left school, but Mandeok couldn’t help but wonder if there were other reasons behind his decision that perhaps Francis hadn’t yet realized.

Lillian had found a new passion for the violin, helped by her teacher Miss Isabela and her friend and tutor Clarence Bailey. She still preferred the piano, but Mandeok was glad to see her daughter expand her musical horizons.

Clara had developed a new hobby of gardening. She had practically taken over the front porch with fall flowers and perennials for spring, but the whole family loved the color they brought to the house during those cold autumn months. Clara still loved to explore the woods and beaches, but Mandeok had to admit she preferred Clara’s newer hobby for its relative safety.

Hudson had been gone for so long that Mandeok now found it hard to recall how his voice sounded. Mandeok and Hudson had been through so much together. 

In retrospect, perhaps she shouldn’t have taken those twenty-four years they had for granted. 

When she was younger, it had felt like forever. 

Now that she was approaching middle age, she knew that it had only been the blink of an eye before her best friend was taken from her. 

Now, all these years later, their children were almost grown. It broke Mandeok’s heart that Hudson would never be able to see what fine young adults Francis, Lillian, and Clara were becoming. She knew that he would be so very proud of each of them, just as proud, if not prouder, than Mandeok was of their children herself. She couldn’t wait to see what the future had in store for them.

Lupine Cottage

A CC Free Victorian Beachside Cottage

Lot size: 20x20 Price: §40,013 Lot type: Residential Location: Bedlington Beachhouse, Brindleton Bay

This build will be familiar to all of you who have downloaded Antiquated Brindleton, where it's previously been released as a cc-lite build. This build is really no fun to play without Romantic Garden, so in honor of it being free to download I wanted to release a cc-free version of it. It also gave me the chance to refresh it with some of the new assets we've gotten since then, and it's turned out so well.

This lot is potentially my favorite build I've ever done and I'm so in love with how it's turned out here. Even if you have the previous one, I'd certainly give this version a try, because humbly; I think it's better.

I'm not sure how many of you will recognize this lot, or have already, but it's based off the cottage from the children's book Miss Rumphius, which tells the tale of the lupine lady who spreads lupine seeds along Maine's roadways in the early twentieth century. You can see the inspo pics below as well as a shot of lupines in Maine in the spring, where they really do look like someone rode around just throwing seeds as they went. I highly recommend the book for any history lovers the illustrations are beautiful.

Lupine's are unfortunately not native to Maine and are considered invasive, so loving them does come with a smidgen of guilt, but luckily we don't have that problem in Sims.

I picture this cottage as the perfect home for your loner, spinster characters, and that's exactly who lives there in my save. This lot is in some ways a love letter to Maine and Brindleton Bay as I see it. So please enjoy.

This build is appropriately furnished for the late nineteenth to early twentieth century; no indoor plumbing and lots of candles. It's really only suitable for one sim as built, but could probably be edited quite easily for a couple. Fully playtested.

Dear readers, It's with great joy and enthusiasm that I make my first post in this space.

My name is Ellie, a young girl of twenty-one years who is passionate about the universe of The Sims; if I had one last wish, it would be to spend hours upon hours creating stories with my Sims. My passion in the game is the Decades Challenge, so I decided to create my own challenge and share my story here.

I must confess that I am new to the simblr world; I have never had a simblr, and I have never managed one. This is my first (I am so excited)! Therefore, I am still learning how everything works here. Additionally, English is not my first language, and I fiercely struggle with English grammar. So, there may be some strange words and errors; please bear with me <3.

I have a very interesting and exciting story to share. I can't wait for you to meet the characters. I have spent countless hours dedicated to each member of the founding family, shaping their personalities, exploring their fears, dreams, and ambitions. Each character is unique, with their own journey and contribution to the story that I am eager to share with you.

Agnes came downstairs one afternoon and was surprised to find Benson and her parents sitting in the parlor. 

Her mother smiled widely as she entered. “Agnes dear!” she said. “Mr. Darlington came to ask you something!”

Benson awkwardly looked at the floor before approaching her. “Miss Emory,” he said. “I wanted to ask- my mother is throwing a ball this weekend at the Brindleton theatre. If you would, I would like you to accompany me?”

She was taken aback. A ball? With Benson? She had never been to the theatre before, or a ball, but it sounded very exciting indeed.

“I would love to go with you!”

Part 4: 1897-1898

Edmund(right) and Richard(left) have aged up. Edmund is really excited about being able to attend school and study a lot. His twin is equally excited about school though that's more to do with meeting other children their own age.

John decided that they are old enough to help out with some work. They both enjoy fishing and cleaning the sheds. Edmund in particular enjoys giving his mother a hand with the household chores without having to be told.

Little Mary is being born in the winter of 1897, just a few months after her twin brother's 6th birthday. Edmund dotes on her the most, nicknaming her "little pea" and reading her his homework to help her fall asleep.

Throughout the cold winter months there isn't much to do for the boys. The ponds and rivers are frozen and their father doesn't want them to help out with the gardening just yet, "you have a lot to learn before I can let you help with our crops. Go back inside and study, and maybe in the spring you can start weeding".

So, they do as told. Their favorite spot in the house is the chess table. Whenever they don't help with their four younger siblings or are doing homework, they can be found playing chess. "Why can I never beat you, Edmund?" whines Richard after every game, "I work so hard!". "It's because I'm a genius", Edmund would joke and then proceed to explain his moves.

Henry wasn’t yet the age to attend school, but he loved to join his older sister on her errands into town. Louisa didn’t mind the company, besides her little brother always found something in the store to occupy his attention while she visited with Edward.

“Do you think you could meet me to go iceskating this weekend? It’ll be spring soon and the pond down by the ruins will thaw,” The shop boy asked her.

“I should be able to get out of my chores on Saturday,” Louisa smiled, but felt butterflies in her stomach. She’d never met with Edward outside of the general store, excluding the time he visited house to deliver her Christmas gift. But she didn't want to lose her nerve now, she wanted to take advantage of the freedoms that came with her youth.
