nestled between the cold and calculating eldest sister, and the free-spirited younger brother, euphemia “effie” stuart had been born and bred for the express role of support. all the work without any glory or gratitude, even though she had always been smarter than catherine, more charming than catherine, more beautiful than catherine. at least in her mind. she is a leading lady stuffed into the box of supporting character, what could go wrong? 

queen mary and prince christian wanted to raise a strong support act to the crown, a brilliant mind with a charming voice that could bring people to the cause — for what was one secure crown heir without an equally competent backup? the line was clear, however, that she will only exist to orbit the sun and not be one herself, it was how monarchies worked; there can only be one at the top. 

in hindsight, the stuart sisters were treated similarly until after their societal débuts. privately educated by a governess until boarding school in gordonstoun, finishing school at hughes school for ladies, and a stunning society debut, two years apart. there was nothing accidental about the upbringing of the next generation of stuarts, and the sisters were constantly reminded of that. a place and role for each child. as the second-born, effie knew from the beginning that she will never share her elder sister’s glory, nor will she be afforded the freedom that being the youngest will be. she was stuck, and yet was expected to perform at her very best without a moment of reprieve. it was a bitter truth that she was forced to swallow, that after all the expectations and pressures she must endure, she would slowly fade whilst the dynasty will go on without her. 

little george had suffered from the oppressive rule of their parents, and he feared that his eldest sister would continue on the same noble tradition. effie had more compassion, warmth, enough to warrant being on her younger brother’s side. but one could not help but to wonder if keeping george as the rebellious bane of her parents’ existence might be useful to keep effie’s spot as almost-favourite. surely not! she was secure in her knowledge that the queen loves her more than george; she is more useful, more valuable than a rebellious prince who decided to forge his own path quite so obviously. effie, however, held great trepidation of what lies ahead, for the most valuable role of a spare was to marry into an important scottish duchy — forever under the thumb of the crown, without a grand title to call her own. it might be in her best interest to keep george in line, to one day push that responsibility onto her brother in order to freely climb greater heights. 

so effie encouraged their mother to make a match for her in the prince of portugal; someone with an illustrious bloodline and from a respected catholic nation. the queen was elated, but catherine was worried — she knew she wouldn’t be able to trust the youngest stuart to pick up the slack effie will force him to inherit, although the queen simply demanded the results to appear. through one way or another, the engagement was called off after half a year of rumours and effie was free once more to do the crown’s bidding. however that did not last long. it took effie a few weeks to start fervently searching for a new betrothal, a more powerful betrothal that might bring her a grander title, and what better place to do so than the program? 

at the end of october, the crown princess gave birth to her first child, a son that will be an heir of switzerland instead of scotland. the very first of his kind, scotland wasn’t quite sure how to take such a big notion to stride. a small group of hardcore nationalists took up protest in front of the parliament building and holyrood palace, proclaiming that euphemia was the crown princess they deserve, instead of catherine — who they thought have prioritised switzerland instead of scotland. what will this mean for the sisters? will the tension be too much to bear? 

euphemia stuart has always been team scotland, the other half of the dynamic duo that had always made the stuart name proud. but will she tire of being taken for granted? will she yearn too much for her own glory that she will gladly forsake her role?
