Im in Book 12 of SP now and...
With all the things about police brutality and abuses of power (even in my own country) it makes me incredibly uncomfortable whenever Skulduggery points out that "Arbiters make the rules" and "Mortal laws dont apply". Theres been a few scenes were people have asked for lawyers or pointed out that what Skulduggery and Val are doing is illegal, only for them to go "we're above the law".
And I know its supposed to be funny. But it just feels... wrong. Fundamentally, deeply and utterly immoral. Its the same thing with China having absolute power, which makes her more and more a dictator. Or the sorcerers openly disliking mortals, which is incredibly xenophobic.
I get that its realistic. China and the racist sorcerers are supposed to make a point about the world and all that.
But our detectives? Why is my feel good, silly investigation novel filled with sassy brutalits. Because thats what it is now, isnt it. They can go anywhere, to anyone and arrest them and the only thing stopping them from doing so is their (questionable) moral. And only the "Bad Guys" ever complain about it, no normal person would have a problem with that right? Because only bad people, only horrible people, could be against a system in which two incredibly powerful and problematic detectives have absolute jurisdiction globally.
Sorry. I know its a joke. It just... Its not funny. It never was. Makes my skin itch.

Gonna say this rn, for those who don't like phase 2.
At least it's not Harry Potter and The Cursed Child levels of bad ok. I've heard that that's awful.
We got freaking Ghastly out of this, like I don't see them getting Fred or Sirius back, do you?!

"Yep I was there to kill China. What of it?" My car "Dexer Vex" is back alive! Yes i´ve named my Car after the character Dexter Vex out of @dereklandyofficial Skulduggery Pleasant Book. So @mr._m_cosplay ,@/deidara_masaki @/kasu_chan.cos and a good friend of Wesker took this as an opportunity to drive my car out and take new photos Photo made by @/deidara_masaki

incase anyone is unaware, yes, there is a new trilogy coming. derek described it as actual murder mysteries where skulduggery is actually doing detective work for once, which sounds super neat! looking forward to this one!

something something Valkyrie Cain's struggles with mental illness are so well-portrayed and I remember reading the scene in [I don't remember what book but it was in phase 2 of the books so spoilers for that] where she's sitting in a car and she thinks she's dead and thinking 'holy shit how did Derek Landy write this so well' and just her depression is so relatable as well and the fact that she suffers from more than one mental illness but it's seen as valid and not that she's faking and I think it's rare that in popular media we get a queer woman with mental illnesses who is portrayed positively and sympathetically and isn't a villain and I love her and the way she's written and sometimes I love this book series so much it makes me incomprehensible something something

For all the SP people:
Ive started Phase 2 (I wont spoil anything) and its genuinely... theres genuinely so much good there? Like. First of all. A dramatic increase in Queerness™. And I mean absolutely visible Queerness. Not anything implied, full on LGBTQ+ stuff, right there. I know people dislike Never but I fucking love Never. Is it weird that Savant and Melchior are technically the bad guys? Yup. But is it cool to have the "I did it for my spouse" trope in gay? Also yup.
I love Omen! Omen is cool. Omen is so akward and I love him for it.
Also, Militsa. Yas Queen. Get yourself a girlfriend.
But reading all these books in such close succesion, theres some real bullshit here as well. The Abyssinia reveal completely takes the energy from Skulduggerys struggle. Steals the gravitas. China is just... yeah. Its a little much. Tipstaff? Hm. I love Sturmun Drang for being vocal but I also know how it will end with him and its weird going into it all that China is just a dictator at this point. Full on magical dictator. There are so many semi-fascist government ideas existent in SP now? And I know thats kind of the point, but I dont know if I wanted Magical Fascism and the whole race debate from the 19th century just vibing in the books.
Then again, Im never a fan of that.
Anyways, just needed to share. Almost done with Book 11!

it's very funny to see other (non in your case) readers in the fandom come to the same conclusion I came to by reading SP fanfic: other teenagers are boring and annoying and that's why Val had no friends her actual age. I have the inkling that Derek is trying to introduce these new characters as a way to maybe start a new SP phase without Skug and Val, which is???? who's in the market for that l o l
I mean. I think all ordinary teenagers are boring and annoying, tbh - that's part of being a teenager. Of the two Phase 2 books I read, all Omen did was basically Be Fat, Be Useless, and Sit In Maths Class. And who's interested in that? That's the life of every single fat kid on the planet. There's nothing interesting or compelling about mundanity in a world full of magic. I mean, personally, there's nothing interesting or compelling about mundanity ever, which was precisely why I read books like Phase 1: to escape my own Be Fat, Be Useless, Sit In Maths Class life. But some people like a normal life, so YMMV.
The only thing that set Val apart was that when she was a teenager, so were we. She was still annoying. She was overly edgy and selfish and shitty, but so was I at that age. Most likely, so were you. And teenagers will still be overly edgy and selfish and shitty in 100 years' time - that's part of figuring out who you are. If we'd been adults at the time, she probably would've annoyed us, but instead she was relatable, and more competent and kickass than we could ever hope to be. She had a personality and a life we wished we had, and that's why we enjoyed reading about her. If there was a "new Val", they'd probably still irritate me because I'm no longer a young teen and I Don't Like Children, but I'd understand why younger readers would imprint on them.
But? I can't see anyone doing that with Omen. He and his yawn-fest classmates have nothing an average kid doesn't already have. Most of their appearances are just...them at school. They're not cool, they're not charismatic, they're not well-crafted personalities, they don't have thrilling secret lives. Yes, they can do a little bit of magic, within a strictly regulated, restricted environment. But the badly-executed attempted Hogwarts ripoff takes all the fun out of learning magic and basically consigns those characters to being just...lame. And boring. A distraction from the actual story. I skipped most of their chapters in SPX and Midnight, because I just did not care what happened to them at all.
I genuinely can't see anyone wanting to pay for a book about them, and only them. I really can't.

Can we talk about Never?
So I like Never, she's a fun character, but I have some issues with him. (Sorry if the pronouns get confusing, I'm just going off of the book, I don't mean to offend anyone).
The one issue I have is the hatred for Valkyrie. I understand that her brother was killed, that's a horrible thing, but then he goes and says shit like, "You should have left magic, but you were addicted".
Now here's the thing 'k. In the same book that Valkyrie finds out that she's Darquesse, she gets attacked in her own home and a group of people with the intent of murking her specifically nearly kill how many damn people? At the age of fifteen, Valkyrie already had to many enemies to just leave. And Never would know that. Omen says so himself that there are History classes telling kids about the things that she's done.
Never doesn't like Valkyrie, that's cool. That's expected. But to say that Valkyrie could have walked away annoys me. And you can bring up the point of, "Oh, she was fourteen, she didn't understand." But again, this grudge is held onto throughout the phase 2. But the end of it, Never is sixteen and after everything, you'd think she'd understand from Omen that once you're in it's near impossible to leave. And maybe he does get it now, we can't really tell, but if she still says that Valkyrie could have just left I might scream.
That's all from me, no clue if this made any form of sense, but if it did tell me your thoughts. I like Never I really do, but gosh this irked me when I thought about it while re-reading phase 1.
