Everybody Hates Lila (And Why It’s Concerning Sometimes)
Lila Rossi is not a stranger in the Miraculous fandom. In fact I’d argue she’s more infamous than Gabriel in some cases. She’s despised by nearly everyone and while some reasons are more justifiable than others, she’s all around not a good person and a mid at best character.
But here’s my deal with it. The fandom hates this girl to I’d like to say an….unhealthy degree. Like the amount of salt this character gets is unmatched. And I feel like the causation of all of this salt doesn’t really live up to the response.
Lila is a liar who causes characters to act out of character very often. And not only that but she also is Marinette’s main rival now and is a jerk to her. She’s underutilized and her lies aren’t that convincing and yet the story wants to convince us she’s more important than she really is pre butterfly miraculous.
This is Lila’s character summed up. At the most I’d expect is frustration mixed in with mild dislike. Reasonable but not over the top. Instead though, I see SEVERAL people make so many salt fics and talk so much shit about her that I just have to sit down and say….y’all need to chill. You all seriously need to chill.
The fandom talks about this character like she’s the spawn of Satan, something we’ve been criticizing Astruc for doing with Chloe, all because she doesn’t have as many redeeming traits as her. Did we forget that they’re BOTH kids? Both of them still have room to improve on themselves.
And I’ll admit it, I was one of those people who kept on saying “Why demonize Chloe when we have Lila” but thinking on it now, neither of them deserves to have that fate. If we REALLY need a character to do the whole “people don’t change” thing, why not Gabriel?
It’s so much better to have this lesson taught to adults to not be like Gabriel, to accept change and loss and to be better. To teach how heavy the impact of a lost love can be and how old age isn’t an excuse to be “stuck in your ways”.
Plus the lesson works better for someone who’s older than for teenagers who’s literally at the stage of their lives where change is everything. And I’m not saying Lila needs to be redeemed or she isn’t allowed to be a villain. What I’m saying is that the over salting on her character, a character that can be easily fixed and patched up, is kinda dumb and kinda annoying to see…especially when some people do like Lila.
SPEAKING OF WHICH, don’t think I’ve forgotten what happened years ago with that one fan that claimed that they loved Lila. That’s what happens when you take salting on a character WAY too far. And I can say that it’s only gotten a little better.
I just don’t understand why people can’t spend their energy talking about how to make a character better instead of salting on them 24/7 and this goes for all of the characters in ML.
I’m gonna be in the minority when I say this but Lila doesn’t deserve to be salted in as much as she does. She deserves reevaluation and a true villain arc. The constant bashing and insulting her at any chance ain’t it.
But you wanna know the thing that frustrates me the most about the Lila salt? How she started getting salted on in the first place. Aka, her being another barrier to Adrienette.
If y’all don’t know already, I don’t like the lovesquare and even back then I didn’t like it. And when I started seeing people hate Lila for this reason, I got very annoyed. It’s the same reason as to why people hated Kagami and it’s a stupid reason (imo). At least the other reasons why she’s hated had some foundation and sense.
TLDR: Lila is a mess but she’s not a mess that’s beyond repair but the constant salting on her and her character isn’t going to do anything. (If you really wanna salt on someone, salt on the writers for making her writing so subpar)

Tough ask, maybe one that isn't fair but hey you are the ML guru, I apologize if it is.
What makes someone an ML 'Salter'?
I had someone call me a salter before, but then I the 'They would write Marinette as Velma' ask and essh, no.
My concern has always been how the show seemed to deviate from its own one-time core values or treat characters as disposable props for singular points. Is that salty?
I know all shows have slight OOC moments for plot, but degree varies. I think it is also safe two say prople approach these moments differently. Dome people acknowledge them, others weave narrative justification. One camp will accuse the other of being too narrow and looking for any excise at all to bash the characters/writers. The other will say the counterpart will do anything to justify the text, even read it while squinting with one eye covered and standing on their head.
But when I see something like the homework situation- something made ludicrous by existing since kindergarten unchecked, and we have Chloé(yes I know discourse lightning rod) about to be saddled with 9 years of makeup work, that seems for ML to be the perfect blend of comedic commuppanance. Chloé buried under a pile of books and papers is a great image, and perfect kharma for dodging so long (even if enabled by literally everyone)
So when Marinette -the protagonist- jumps up and starts railing about how it isn't enough. It feels... Gross? It doesn't feel like Marinette. Is she having guilt issues about facing zero consequences for losing the miraculous? We get nothing, but it's nails on a chalkboard and very much feels like someone else speaking from Marinette's mouth.
Am I going to go out and write Marinette-as-Velms fic? No. I *like* Marinette. Marinette is not mean spirited. That's the very problem I have with the interaction here.
If I were to write anything it would focus forward. Chloé buried under her extra work, visibly struggling because while the school assigned all the work and tests, they gave no plan or structure for the learning (now that is a good school critique)
Marinette feels for her, because Chloé is in full on Diktator-roof-meltdown. Sure there is satisfaction at first, but Marinette doesn't revel in Misery. She inquires, which leads to a chain of events. Chloé fobbing her off->admitting she needs help->Marinette tries to build her a study plan-> Chloé trying to get Marinette to do some of her work->Marinette realizing and rejecting this->Chloé coming back defeated again, submissive, just asking Marinette to check her work->Marinette realizing quickly that Chloé has been following her plan(though she gets a lot wrong) and studying->Marinette offering to help Chloé study for the subject-aptitude tests only, Chloé has to do all the coursework on her own.->Chloé finally coming to terms with give-and-take, and thanking Marinette. Maybe even apologizing. This would either be in time-crunch or carried over into S6 as a background arc.
This puts Marinette ascendent, demonstrates her core strengths of intelligence, planning, and compassion, has her interact with her former nemesis from a position of power while showing the difference between them (Does not abuse this position or revel in the disparity) shows boundaries being set, and keeps with the overall theming of hope over despair.
So is that 'salty'?
Okay so, as far as "salt" goes, it tends to have two different meanings that stem from the same root: the first being intense criticism of something, being unhappy with it in some way. And then a more specific meaning, referring to the way "salt" and "salter" were being used when the term first started being used a lot in the ML fandom, to describe the group and conceit that Miraculous as a show was being horribly unfair to Marinette, that her friends and family were all awful to her and needed to be punished while Marinette got what she "deserved" in terms of getting a new group of friends and family who would happily hurt anyone she was mad at and follow her orders without question.
For the record, when I rail at how terrible salters are, I'm talking about the latter category. I don't necessarily want to hear people go on too much about Miraculous being bad or the characters being bad, but some criticism is fair and reasonable. It's just the criticism that spawned out of Chameleon and the entire saltdom that formed around it that tended to not be.
Technically, what you're describing, being unhappy with the way the show did something and wanting to change it, would be classified as salt. HOWEVER, it's not the kind that people generally have a problem with - there's a reason there's been discussion of trying to get "critique" to catch on for that instead, when it's a saner form of criticism that isn't just hell-bent on revenge.
Also something to note with what you're laying out - you're looking to make the situation better, to address it and doing more of a fix-it, rather than just trying to burn the characters at the stake. I think that's what got the people who initially joined up with the salt in the early days, when it was billing itself as being "progressive" and "the right thing to do to address the problems of the show" to slowly bow out of the saltdom. Some people joined up with it because it criticized problematic elements of the show and they wanted to join with what appeared to be the more morally, socially conscious side of the fandom. Some ventfics made sense in that context, but once it became clear that was all it was, and that it wasn't actually setting out to fix things, to make things better, a lot of that group left the saltdom.
I don't personally have a problem with Marinette being upset that Chloe didn't get a greater punishment - she's got plenty of reason to be upset with Chloe and to believe that Chloe will wriggle her way out of any punishment she's given anyway - but your points are fair and I like the way you're seeking to address and fix the situation, laying out an alternative scenario, rather than, you know, burning everything to the ground.
That's a key difference - you seem to be aiming for a fix-it scenario rather than a bashing one.

Are there Adrien Salt takes that you disagree with?
Since I know this is just a random anon ask that gets asked to every major blog, I’ll still answer it.
But yeah, most takes I already see as just overexaggerated and go along with the flow. It doesn’t really matter anyway, the whole point of reading a ml salt fic is because its exaggerated. I don’t read it because I 100% think Adrien or Alya would act either cruel/abusive to Marinette, I read it for exaggeration how far pettiness would go, what people write.
I don’t think Adrien would be abusive or stand by if Marinette was getting beaten up in certain fics, or stand by as the ‘class’ tear into Marinette’s sketchbook, he’s naïve but he wouldn’t stay put like that. And I do think the ‘high road advice’ would only go so far, if he really saw how bad it was affecting Marinette, for instance if the lies did get worse, I do think he would step in and tell everyone and he would apologise to Marinette for it. He’s naïve and too forgiving to everyone to not know when he’s getting walked all over, but I don’t think he’s as bad as some fics say.
I honestly really just want more from him and his character. Yes he can still be quiet and kind and happy as Adrien, coming out of his shell around his friends and clueless about social norms, and as Chat Noir he can still joke and be funny and a partner to Ladybug and vice versa, but I wanna see him be more than just the jokester, or just there for his Cataclysm, I want him to go on development that he can be more, to take the job of being the one of the only two heroes in Paris a little more seriously.
Like I do get that he’s meant for comic relief, but it only goes for so far cause it gets boring when he gets captured or hit by the Akuma for the umpteenth time, where it seems he always relies on the cure and Ladybug to save the day and think of himself as able to sacrifice himself because she can fix it. Its not a good mindset and if the writers could expand on that and actually have them as an equal Team it would be good, but they frame him as always being in the right and it does get annoying when he is pushy and sometimes unreliable in battles, when times have shown Ladybug could realistically do plans herself at points, they always tell us Chat is important to the Team but were always able to figure it out without him, and that kinda sucks cause it does seem he can be easily replaceable, and if he was just a bit more competent it would seem fair. Cause at the moment, if I was in the ml universe and I had to wait for either of the 2 heroes to save me from being turned to stone or flattened, I’d really hope Ladybug would come get me cause I’d have far more faith in her.
Anyway sorry for the rant and slight change of topic, I guess I got a bit side tracked. But honestly yeah, him being either abusive, mean, possessive, and insistent that he’s right are takes I don’t think are him but won’t stop reading if they are in a fic cause I already have all their personalities exaggerated anyway. And I think if he saw how he was either hurting Ladybug or Marinette he would feel so bad and try and make it up to them.

Name All Your WIPs Challenge
Thank you to @sing-in-me-oh-muse for tagging me! I have a whole bunch, most of them unpublished.
Already Published:
Breaking Down (ML salt fic) : Tikki sees Marinette sad and is out for revenge. Let’s hope someone talks her out of it. I’m getting there so nearly done. Involves salt to Marinette’s parents and Lila, though there may be some redemption coming, possibly. I’m very conflicted about that.
Past and Future Demigods Put Together to Read (PJO read the books fic): Exactly what the title says. Percy and a few others go way back in time, nearly 2 millennia, to read some books. 2 chapters away from completion!...of the first book that is. No continuations promised as of now.
To Publish/Write: I have so many of these it’s not even funny
Midsummer Night’s Dream AU (ML AU fic): Slight variations to the play to fit it to the ML-verse. Also has no miraculous involved.
Untitled Miraculous Writer’s Guild October Event Fic: A collab fic, with October themed fun! Mainly carving pumpkins with Love Square shenanigans.
Remember Everything (Miraculous Fanworks October Challenge Fic): Though this may end up being done much later. A sad songfic set during Chat Blanc; Chat Blanc-centric. The song is by Five Finger Death Punch so if you know it chances are you can guess what the fic will be about. Just pure sadness.
Leporiphobia (PJO fic): A crack fic I’m working on because I got inspired when I reread The Last Olympian for the umpteenth time. Grover is deadly afraid of bunnies and Percy did promise to talk about it later. Later has come. No clue how that’s going to happen though, it’s sitting half done.
Untitled PJO + FT Crossover: Lucy’s Celestial Spirits are all constellations and all of those constellations have stories from Greek Mythology. That’s the basis of the fic anyways, it gets more into gods vs humans and all that fun stuff.
Why Lucy Joined Fairy Tail: That’s the working title anyways. Everyone else in the guild has a story on why they joined Fairy Tail but nobody knows Lucy’s. Based off of OVA 3 because if no one else will write this then I guess I will.
Natsu is Petty (FT fic): Also working title. I’ll come up with something better I promise. Modern AU fic, where Gajeel is Natsu’s cousin and Gray is his best friend. Even though Natsu hangs out with both of them all the time, neither has ever met, until now. Of course, when setting it up Natsu perceives dumb stuff as insults and decides to prank them. I just haven’t figured out what that prank should be.
Tagging: @kitten-noire, @silveryeet, @mdelpin, @rougescribe, @theanxiouscupcake and anyone else who wants to do it!
