Some know him as Blue Bowser, others know him as Bowser's Brother, but all you'll know is pain if you step in the ring with this guy! Bulrog may look a lot like Bowser, but he's got a degree of swagger his tyrant brother just can't match - just look at that combover!
fun fact: Bulrog's name comes from two sources!
first, the Korean food dish "bulgogi", which Miyamoto thought "Koopa" was actually named after
Tumblr media
second, this bizarre mistranslation of Bowser's name from one of those how to draw books
Tumblr media
combining "bulgogi" and "Kerog" gets "Bulrog"!

RECENT GAME ROUNDUP
Tumblr media
Whoops! Haven't posted in a while. I find that a lot of the things I want to say about games I feel would be better in a video format. I don't have the skills to do that yet, but I feel like I would get my points across better than a big fat stinkin' wall of text. Audio-visual game reviews are the future!
Anyway, here's some of the games I played recently.
CONFESS MY LOVE: Found this randomly for free on Steam, and wow! Lovely little game. Super short, can be beaten in a few hours. It seems simple, but when I started getting deeper into the endings, it was amazing!
SUPER MARIO BROS. 2 (JPN): A sequel in the truest sense. If you play this before beating the first game, it seems washed up and bad. But once you beat Mario 1 (without warps!), it gets so much more fun! It's like a challenge pack add-on!
SUPER MARIO 64: Controls like a dream. The camera is a double edged sword; it makes the game harder to play at first, but when you figure it out, it makes the game feel MORE fun. The thing I don't like about the game is that... the midgame is kinda bad. The first several courses are awesome, but once you get into Shifting Sand Land, Hazy Maze Cave, and Big Boo's Haunt, it feels like the game noticeably dips in quality.
DOOM: Been having a lot of fun with this! Advice: DO NOT go into this game thinking it's super fast action-packed gun slinging insanity, because it isn't. When you first start out, it's a lot more methodical and slow, and the action segments are pretty spaced out. You'll be using your minimap a lot to figure out where to go next. But on second playthrough, you'll know the layouts better and get through it faster. Later, even faster. The more you learn, the more action-packed it gets. It's a slow boil, but super worth it. I've only beaten Episode 1 so far, but hopefully the rest of the game is good!
GARTEN OF BANBAN: Yuck! I thought this would be funny-bad, but it was just bad-bad! The drone controls terribly, the chase section is unintuitive, the game is optimized like ass, and it's over before you know it! Super bad game. Even though it's free, I wanted a refund when it ended.
FITNESS BOXING FIST OF THE NORTH STAR: Man! When I saw this in a Nintendo Direct, I got so hyped! This sort of thing is right down my alley. But goodness, Kenshiro's English VA is so BAD. That just turned me right off the game. The rest of it was pretty whatever. I wasn't expecting the world with this one, cause for what it lacked in quality, I would fill in the blanks with my own enjoyment, but this game is too lukewarm even for that! Bleh!
PIKMIN 3: Right as the long-awaited fourth game releases, I start playing the decade-old third game for the first time. I don't know entirely how I feel about it yet, but it's a Pikmin game, so it's a good game.

If you were ranking NES games from all across the globe instead of just North America, do you think the science would Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 sitting higher or lower than Super Mario Bros?
Lower. The novelty of SMB2J is really off the charts, but the way that difficulty gets layered on actually makes for a fairly miserable experience in some spots. It's a game that can only work because of the existence of SMB1. Without that game to provide context for what "normal" is, SMB2J would just be a promising-but-frustrating platformer.

unfinished drawing of the SMB2J cover art I once did but grew displeased with and scrapped. Coming back to it, I'm not sure why I didn't finish it but here it is anyway lol from 2020

In "I made you a Salad with extra tomatoes", you can select 8-bit Pantufa, a homage to my first ROM hacks for SMB and SMB2J
Tumblr media
a Fireflower state was planned but got cut due to time constraints, the sprite mappings and art for it do still exist in the ROM

Skybilz: *Has an unfortunate jump into water in Super Mario World*
The shuffler: *Immediately jumps into SMB1, where she was right over a pit and promptly falls to her death*
Phan_tv: The Super Mario All-Stars Shuffler, everyone!
It very quickly shuffled again to Super Mario Bros 2 Lost Levels/SMB2J, and just as quickly off to somewhere else.
Skybilz: I was going to talk about the Bills of Questionable Intent but now -
Phan_tv or Aweglib, didn’t quite catch who: You’ll talk about it anywhere from 30 seconds to ten minutes from now!

So I ordered another Zapper since the one that came with my NES didn't work... the new one works. Duck Hunt plays like a dream. I'm a lot better at it than I was when I was a kid. But i'm still not a perfect shot. I played it with the Wii, and with a mouse on my PC.. But that just felt way too easy. Having a crosshair on the screen really cheapens it.
Not only did my Zapper come in, but so did my everdrive... and much like my NES classic edition, I inagurated it with Super Mario Bros. But not just any version of Super Mario Bros. I played the Super Mario Bros. I played the Super Mario Bros. Tweaked.
youtube
( Not my gameplay, I just failed to take a snap shot )
So... I might make this my default way of playing Super Mario Bros.... on the NES anyway. I'll probably more often default to my Super Mario All-Stars redrawn hack once it's done.
It's essentially Super Mario Bros. Modernized, but with no silly changes to the graphics. It adds title screen music, the sounds pitch up when you rack up consecutive points, you can bounce higher off of an enemy when you hold the jump button like in SMB2J/Lost Levels onward, they extended the Princess Peah rescue music, you can earn 1ups with the starman, and you can earn 1ups by touching the top of the flag pole.
It feels just like the original game, just better.
I do think one change I don't care for is the fact that you just power down when you get hit as fire Mario. Kind of makes the game feel just a tad too easy... maybe that's a bit of a silly complaint when you can rack up 50 lives very easily compared to the first game where i'm lucky to even see double digits in my life counter, but ehhh, I feel how I feel.
If you always wanted to play SMB1 but couldn't get into it because it felt just slightly too antiquated, maybe give this version a spin.

Do you believe that HAD Smb2J/Lost Levels came out internationally instead of the reskinned Doki Doki Panic, the Mario series might've died off just due to how unfun the real SMB2 is?
Eh, that's going to vary person to person of course.

Introduction:
Hi my name is Aryll, im a mario speedrunner who mainly plays any% the games that i play mainly are smb1, smb2j, smb3 and smo and i stream them on twitch(link in bio). Also im ace. I dont really like putting a label to my romantic attraction so i just say im gay. I live in Madrid, Spain and my favorite animals are cows, although i also really like possums. Im a plushie enthusiast since they help me sleep and deal with anxiety so i have a looooot. There's other games apart from mario that i like, for example, i really enjoy zelda, splatoon, metroid, phoenix wright and other nintendo games. I also watch anime but not too much. My favorite ones are Ranma 1/2, One piece and dragon ball. Although i know a lot about jojo's and lupin the third. There's animes that i still want to watch like cowboy bebop and urusei yatsura.
In terms of music taste, i really like everything that my friends put me so i dont really have a preference, although one of my friends recently made me have a hyper fixation on the band Cardiacs, being R.E.S and A little man and a house my favorite songs from them.
I really hope i start knowing a lot of people here, i still dont really know how to use this app but im probably gonna use it to post stuff about the things im passionate about, like drawings, clips and stuff that im doing.

Out of all the classic Mario games out there, like the original 2D sidescrollers with no fancy graphics, just sprites and 2D platforming, would you say SMB2J Lost Levels is the overall sore thumb in that entire set? Frustrating to the point of being difficult, pointing out so much that ROM hacks abuse, as well as being way too similar to the original SMB1?
Lost Levels is an official rom hack of SMB1. No exaggeration either. I have never beaten it and never plan to. I don’t have the patience for that level of bullshit. That’s why Rod played Kiazo and I didn’t.
I’m damn happy we in US got Doki Doki Panic The Real SMB2 instead. I love that game.

playing Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) as Luigi

I started a ROM hack recently of Super Mario Bros. that isn't so much of a new game as it is a tweak of the original. Levels remain unchanged, but the graphics are now a more fluid mix between the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2 (the Japanese release, AKA The Lost Levels for us). The difficulty has been spiked but not to an extent that the game is impossi-hard. All 1-Up's have been replaced with Poison Mushrooms as a pseudo-reference to the VS. Unisystem (arcade) version where 1-Up's were removed. All green Piranha Plants have been replaced with swifter, faster red ones (like in the modern day games) that don't mind if you're standing beside their pipe or not, they still rise out. The only way to prevent this is to stand directly on top of their pipes. The biggest tweak is that now Mario and Luigi both play significantly differently and sport their SMB2J physics- Luigi can soar with each jump but is quite a bit harder to control, and can slide right into danger with each turn. Mario sports his original physics, sans the bounceback that SMB2J threw into the mix where each stomp gave a little more hangtime. I don't really know why I even started this hack, but it's a pretty fun experience to work with and play, and all the changes (although few) really add to and set the game apart from it's original, unmodified form. I had the idea to tack on a story- considering how Nintendo has deemed this "The (Y)ear of Luigi", Luigi is given one last chance to turn it all around and steal the spotlight- by being sent back to his very first. The hack removes 2P mode in exchange for MARIO and LUIGI modes, where you're locked onto either one or the other. I was hoping I could tweak around with the MARIO mode so that it's basically a cakewalk mode akin to the original game, whereas LUIGI mode is much more of a challenge. Oh well. Maybe.

Do you think the hammer bros in Lost Levels/SMB2J which run TOWARD you are particularly evil?
Granted, Hammer Bros in the original SMB and Lost Levels always felt like one of if not the biggest threats in the game to me, second only to Bowser when he gets his hammer spamming abilities.
