giving psych another go after having watched the first season and a bit a couple years ago before stopping because I hadn't really been feeling it

only like six or seven eps in this time, and I am enjoying it, and I would like to stick with it this time, but god, now I do remember why I gave up on it in the first place. for all the show has going for it (which is a lot!) so much of the tone (and shawn is usually the biggest offender) falls back on those really insufferable attitudes from the mid ’00s of like. hit on every woman you see, getting laid is always the biggest priority. kneejerk disdain for anything nerdy or "uncool." I'm a guy and that means I care about porn and sports and that's it

#like yeah it's fun when shawn gets blindsided by a woman (bc she's hot ofc) only to get a reveal later that she was the bad guy #but also I'd rather he just. treated women like people in the first place lmao #and I'm sure he does later! like everything I've seen of late series him and juliet looks good and intriguing #but we're starting from such a rough place. and like. is the show aware? #bc then you've got gus who doesn't conform to those same masculine behaviors (often to set up a punchline for shawn) #but gus himself doesn't feel like a punchline or stereotype. he feels well-rounded and is often validated by the circumstances #it's just bizarre. wondering if this is one of those cases where s1 of a show feels least tonally accurate #e.g. how it's initially pitched or what it plays up for viewership or attention vs. how it settles into itself down the line #but man I'm over s1 shawn. like I'm watching the convention ep and he's being so unnecessarily dickish and dismissive to gus and everyone #because it's nerd shit? it's uncool? this just feels like such an outdated sensibility #(which it is. it's 18 years old at this point. these sensibilities are now legal adults) #but I'm glad we as a culture moved past this energy and I'm ready for the show to do the same #psych #kayla posts

-Remembers how T’Pring looked as she watched Spock & Chapel vanish into the bathroom together after seeing them kiss on the bridge (which she knew was for a mission and didn’t hold against them but perhaps she could sense something there since they do have feelings for one another), maybe attempting to calm herself and her suspicions as she’s left alone again (and later finds she’s been left out entirely this whole time) and how she doesn’t know that Spock almost told Chapel he loved her then and there, with T’Pring in the other room waiting, and how Amanda and Sevet both think she could have more confidence in herself and how T’Pring thought that she and Spock were in this together (her holding his hand, subtly letting him know to pour slower so the tea flowers would bloom correctly, a whispered ‘well done’, the ritual is over mother) and how mere hours after she expresses to Spock how she feels: Like he doesn’t trust her, like he doesn’t care to include her in his life, how she’s trying her best to show him that she will accept him wholly, how she wants to be his partner instead of an adversary or an obstacle, after all this he’s found Chapel within the hour and is kissing her.-

usually when a character does Bad Things in a narrative (espec if they're not the protagonist) it is Portrayed As Bad so people who enjoy the character Likely Know They Are Bad

& either way harassing people over enjoying a fictional character is just really childish

if you don't like the character, that is perfectly valid. but there's never any reason to characterise everyone who likes said character as Evil, and/or imply they condone the character's negative actions.

also sometimes i look at internet discourse and it's like people want morally grey characters but then turn around when "morally grey" is not always "i have my own rules but i still make all the right choices !!" some of y'all just need to admit you just like good characters that's fine not everyone is into the spice it's ok to like that good protagonist energy

People say they want to see characters with PTSD and trauma, but then complain that characters are "OOC" or "whiny uwu soft babs" when they realistically depict being traumatized.

#There's plenty of legitimate criticism to throw at this show 1000% #but some of the shit I've seen after the newest episode is like ''oh okay you don't actually know how PTSD manifests at all do you'' lol #the guy's nervous system is still reeling from having been kidnapped and held for ransom AND being around another fire just THREE DAYS prio #''aw why isn't he his usual sassy self'' because you've only known this character for 3 eps and he isn't addressing his own needs #plus his hyperperfectionism is clashing with his trauma making the entire issue worse which USUALLY sands down people's personalities #how can you miss the point of the episode so clearly like the POINT was that perfectionism and pretending you're okay when you're not is BA #not enough media shows how hyperperfectionism is often a very unhealthy coping mechanism for trauma victims and I loved how they did it

#fave spotting #peter wyngarde #jason king #the champions #the invisible man #itc #1968 #what's that? no‚ no‚ don't worry #I'm not rewatching the champions... yet... #one of my... shall we say less prudent purchases of recent months was getting my hands on a cheap copy of Network's retro action set #basically a sampler of single itc episodes in shiny HD; the intent was to attract customers to their burgeoning blu ray upgrades of #various itc serials. imprudent bc of course I've seen most of these episodes; i own a lot of them on dvd in fact (and cough some on blu ray #so yes not a wise investment perhaps... but with network gone (forever in our hearts) and their blu ray range finished (with little #chance of any other label picking up the mantle) this was my only chance to see certain things in brilliant high def... maybe highest on #the list was The Champions‚ a series I've always had an inordinate fondness for. it seems unlikely anyone will give it a blu ray release #so here it is‚ the one and only hd ep. sigh. part of me wished they'd gone for another ep tbh; this has never been a favourite‚ with #Richard and Sharron sidelined for most of the episode and a strangely underwhelming ending (the villains just sort of crash their vehicle #through no fault of the champions). but... it does look beautiful... and finally we can appreciate Peter's wonderful wardrobe as it always #deserved to be seen! he's always dressed in such a particular way that I'm half convinced he provided his own clothes for tv work #here he's... well im fairly certain he gets referred to as Dr but he seems more likely to be a surgeon‚ performing sinister operations on #unwitting stooges. his coconspirator is the lovely James Culliford‚ who like Wyngarde was a relatively out gay actor within the biz #i must admit it lends the episode an even deeper frisson of camp knowing the two actors were gay; Hallam and friend Charles do seem #and it makes the line 'Charles‚ use the vibrator!' utterly risible #still it's good fun. oh! and i finally got to see Tremayne's desk in hd! i always knew he had a bundle of crayons in a jar (a bizarre bit #of set dressing that was presumably an afterthought nobody was expected to see); what i didn't know and shiny blu ray revealed was that the #crayons are sitting on top of a bundle of marbles at the bottom of the jar... Tremayne what are you doing with your office time? #eta: half a tag got eaten‚ i meant to say Hallam and Charles seem remarkably close...
