me ranting on the marvin triolgy i unironically love the marvin trilogy so much?? in trousers makes no sense. esp the end song/ begginning depends on what like version ur listening too. i heard this theory that in trousers is actually marvin being hypnotised by mendle in therapy and it would make sense!! like it'd explain the inaccuracies between it and falsettos. Like Trina having two kids, as mentioned in your lips and me, 'the oldest drink wine the baby's wailing', while in falsettos Jason is the only child known. And in you gotta die sometime when whizzer says i dont smoke but in whizzer going down marvin says 'he takes me in his arms and he lights *another* cigarette.' Then i love how they re used im breaking down from in trousers and using it in the 2016 revival of it. imo it fits better in falsettos because you go more in depth about both trina and whizzer charaters. In trousers musicals actually is so bloody good??? like every song is great, my favourite song is marvin's giddy seizures. It highlights marvin's suicidal attempts and how it doesn't get noticed unless he acts out., then the whole thing just sounds so good. i wish the lesbians got more screen time though because theyre so radicial. every scene they're in they just light the stage up. I love how all the charaters are wrote. I would like to know if in high school ladies at 5 o'clock/ the r--e of mrs goldurg. are we meant to take that literally? im assuming we are because marvin says something along the lines of for my 14th birthday i was hoping you could show me the wonders of the bed. i think we would be, and if we are what the fuck? like i know marvin is an incredibly abusive person before about time but jesus christ. i didnt expect that. now i do adore that marvin's abusive behaviours are acknowledged and reprimanded unlike another musical that attempts to do something alike to falsettos, rent, where all characters have abusive behaviours. i wont dwell on the failures of rent too much because this isn't about rent. I have saw that 2004 college production amd i find it hilarious that in the thrill of first love that marvin drops whizzer, i hope that was scripted because that seems like such a Marvin behaviour. at the same time it would also be funny if it wasnt. either way i like it. anyway in marvin at the physiatrist, in the og off brodway cast, mendle says its queer mr marvin which is so funny to me. on the topic of the og off brodway cast, i find it fun how chip zien played both marvin and mendle in in trousers and march of the falsettos/falsettoland. marvin in in trousers and mendle in MotF/falsettoland respectably. I genuinely adore everything about falsettos. the openeing number is such a good opening song, i dont think ive heard a better one. Then my father's a homo always makes me laugh and i just love how jason doesn't hate his father for being gay, its how his homosexuality tore the family apart. Then this had better come to a stop is such agood number. i love how in the og of brodway run of it the late again sounds like yapping. then the way that trina and whizzer sort of bond over marvin's abusive tendencies is heartbreaking. A tight knit family reprise is a great song again. then the chess game, marvin my guy you know you agreed to let whizzer win cmon now. i never wanted to love you is heartbreaking. and the games i play makes me violently sob. march of the falsettos made no sense to me until i realised that it was a song to remind you that acts of affection are NOT masculine at all. i honestly dont get why act one didnt end with i never wanted to love you, but father to son is heartwarming compared to the previous songs. i love the second act so much. marvin has done everything to change himself yet the love of his life is stripped away from him. it is like a reminder that due to his past actions he can never like fully be a good person. he changed. he did im not putting that down, but his actions can always haunt him.

"Welcome to the Theatre": Diary of a Broadway Baby
Broadway Backwards 2024
March 11, 2024 | Special | BC/EFA | Evening | Concert | 2H | Fundraiser
Tumblr media
I've already complained in detail about the lack of women, specifically old broads, in Broadway Backwards this year, so I won't repeat all that here. Overall, a solid night with some entertaining sketches. They've moved away from the overly sentimental things they've had in the past, and that's a relief. I do tire of the same sketch where a young queer twink has an unsupportive family with a shrewish bigoted mother and a sympathetic yet henpecked father. After the third year in a row, do something new. Why are women always your villains?
Highlights:
Chip Zien and Len Cairou playing old geezer gays at a bus stop, singing the pineapple song from Cabaret. Baker and Barber was a ship you never thought you needed until now.
Julie Benko in a 1930s speakeasy flirting with twenty young female dancers.
Two former Jasmine actresses actually flying around on the magic carpet (because they do this show on the Aladdin set and stage) singing "A Whole New World."
Alex Newell's "Back to Before" - it doesn't come close to touching Marin's rendition, but then, no one can. And it was damn good.
Gay Godfather sketch.
Surprise guest Debra Monk showed up at the eleventh hour, told a dirty joke, wore this snazzy white suit, and gave a wonderful speech. Genuinely, I was going to rate this night a solid "enjoyable..." but surprise Debra Monk instantly bumps it up to "a lovely night."
In short, Broadway Backwards has been just okay these last two years after a triumphant post-COVID return in 2022. I am begging them to please just bring back old broads. Who are these performers they're bringing on who have never actually been on Broadway but are popular with the kids? I don't know that man. Please. Where are my Divas? Where's Bernadette Peters in a sparkly dress?
Verdict: A Lovely Night

any good obscure musical recs?? ive listened to like almost 400 musicals and i need some new ones
oh boy, oh boy, oh boy *rubbing hands together* i'm so glad you asked
my number 1 go-to rec is always "waitress" cause it's gotta be my favorite; it's my comfort musical, i know it's a little more mainstream but i've met a lot of people who just weren't interested enough to watch it, so if you fit into that category pLEASE DO
i think i'd also have to recommend "avenue q"; it's fucking funny, the whole show is done with puppets and the dude who wrote it purposefully hired people who had worked either on sesame street or the muppets, only on this show they're swearing up and down, talking about porn, racism and whatnot; gold mine.
i also love "35mm-a musical exhibition;" dude wrote a musical that makes you feel like you're walking down an photography exhibition and each song tells the story to a different picture. i've actually got a side blog ( @35mm-a-musical-exhibition ) with the pictures to each song cause they're so frickin hard to find??? i was like, why hasn't anyone just dug deep to find the pictures and compiled them all into one place yet?? meh, somebody's gotta do it so it might as well be me (that was a "spies are forever" reference if you didn't get; another great rec; it's a tin can brothers musical, that's made up of some starkid members, including joey richter)
i'm also a really big fan of "lizzie the musical;" i actually made a post hyping it up a while back; it's a rock horror lesbian musical. need i say any more?
now, this isn't really a new musical rec, cause since you said you've listened to almost 400 musicals i'm pretty sure you've heard of "into the woods," bUT lately i've been obssessed with the central park run they did and i'll talk about it for hours to anyone who gives me the chance. they did this shakespeare in the park kind of thing? in which the show is actually put on in the middle of the woods. the lady who plays the witch? my favorite witch up to date; donna murphy was actually the same person who voiced mother gothel in "tangled," which is basically the same role, right? further proving my point that she was born for this part. its so much creepier than any other production, not only because of visual elements but some details they added into some of the characters' representations and detail on the actual story. i do have to warn you tho, that they did not take the wolf's song to little red as a "subtle" reference to being a sexual predator, it's actually pretty explicit, so watch out if you've got any SA triggers. some other details include that amy adams (yes, giselle from "enchanted") plays the baker's wife, jessie mueller (yes, jenna from "waitress") plays cinderella and chip zien (yes, the baker from the original 1987 production of "into the woods") plays the mysterious man. it's so good. please watch it.

Welcome to the Chip Zien tournament!
yes I'm jumping onto the tournament bandwagon. i actually have more than one in mind but I'd like to start out with a smaller scale one only a very specific circle on tumblr can really partake in since Chip is relatively unknown by the general public.
I'll probably only reveal the competitors tomorrow so look out for that. although there's not that much of a selection to choose from. either way,
may the best chip win.

Original broadway production of into the woods>>>>>> any other version. And I could never put my finger on exactly why but you’re so right it’s because every other production going forward takes itself way too seriously. This show is camp!!!! I’m assuming you haven’t seen the 1987 proshot but highly recommend that if you liked the score/plot the performances are great and genuinely funny and they lean into it so much that’s always where my love of into the woods comes from
I have intended to watch the proshot for a while actually (since back in my Chip Zien phase)! I will probably actually get to it now due to having a reason; my friend who saw the show with me said much the same thing. my favorite moments were the ones the production let breathe in their silliness and ridiculousness - overthrowing the narrator, assigning the blame onto each other - but “No One Is Alone” is like. oh my God. to me it’s ridiculous. and it’s not even entirely this production’s fault - Into the Woods, for the past maybe 5 years, has been slowing getting phased into this solemn and deeply artistic thing. any Sondheim Internet personality will go on and on about the artistry and power of the lyrics. I return with the notion that you the audience are perhaps supposed to be annoyed at the incessant, frantic repetition of some of those lyrics and melodies; you all are taking it too seriously. I think it insane that people assert I am supposed to feel something at like, the Baker’s Wife randomly making out with the sexy prince then dying tragically. it’s all pointless and James Lapine wants you to know you’re silly for caring so much. it is camp. why is no one laughing

okay but now im sitting here thinking about no more from into the woods and trying to pin what characters would work best. i think the baker would be kris just bc main character mome (though i AM tempted to make it berdly bc of how much this properly fits my family hcs for him) but for the mystery man there’s a few options!!! i think gaster is the most obvious fit bc mystery man speaks in a lot of riddles, which works. BUUUUUUT gaster as the narrator and RALSEI as the mystery man is something even MORE interesting.
ralsei being this weird little guy kris meets in the woods who ends up helping way more than what the mystery man does in the play. and then kris finds out it’s bc ralsei knows like Everything about their curse (which would be different from into the woods as well) and being betrayed. it would add to the somber undertone i always sense in ralsei, but would get a bit muddied by the father son lyrics in the song itself (which barely apply in the first place since kris is not A Son). but like a song where kris has a breakdown about being controlled and wanting no more??? ohhhhhhhhhhh

today i will be rating the musicals that have Nostalgic Value to me despite being problematic/cringey because i watched them on repeat from a very young age!
Peter Pan (Specifically the one starring cathy rigsby): 6/10, powerful nostalgic value but problematic in the usual ways that peter pan tends to be. it gets a 6/10 because the rooster crow was my favorite stim to scream while dangling from the stairway rails as a child, much to my mother’s horror
Phantom of the Opera (unfortunately,, the 2004 movie): 7/10, the opening is so incredibly Loud and Big in a way that fireworks wish they could achieve. while the cinematography is horrifying,, it’s awfully, terribly chaotic,, in a way that makes my little adhd brain buzz. the flooded cellar scene actually gave 3-year-old me nightmares, we had this one on DVD boys
Cats (1998): 9.5/10, i love it so dearly with all of my heart, call me a furry all you want but you know i have the upper ground of pure unironic enjoyment. the rum tum tugger is the source of my crippling gay urge to impress every asshole that comes my way. i know the choreography and lines by heart and can recite it on demand. the only reason it’s not a full 10/10 is because it is Very Dated And British,, which means that for every “magical mister mistoffolees”, there’s a “battle of the pekes and the pollicles”, which is not good. mistoffolees is a magic sparkly twink and i love that for him.
Into The Woods (1987): 10/10 oh my GOD. holy shit. into the woods by stephen sondheim is one of my favorite musicals to date, because sondheim is a master and the Themes,, musically and storytelling-wise-- also it makes me laugh. Every Time. it’s a personal goal of mine to play either jack or one of the princes. this recording especially is fantastic?? because Bernadette Peters?? and Chip Zien?? oh my god i love this musical with all of my heart,, with none of the issues that come with Cats. i’d memorized everyone’s lines by the age of 7. i can still recite it nearly perfectly. also, “children will listen” always makes me want to hug my mom so i DO. we don’t talk about the movie. it’s good,, but No One can be bernadette peters.
Mary Poppins: 8/10, don’t get me wrong, i love julie andrews to death, but again. Very British. also i played mary poppins twice in two separate states, which made me a little bit tired of the songs. i still enjoy it immensely though,, since i watched it at a young enough age that i couldn’t register exactly How Bad dick van dyke’s accent was. (side note: poor dick van dyke?? his name is literally a curse word and a slur,, the dude had it rough). gave me excellent diction from a young age,, so it’s earned its place on this list.

20. 5 things you love
1. my brother <3 you get first mention because you're the most important. and other people too like Lake and Cords and my beloved mutuals but like you're first priority though
2. Caroline in the city and Harmony and Merrily we roll along, i will lump these 3 together bc at this point they're on about equal levels of hyperfixation to me. also musical theatre in general is my special interest so that too
3. Chip Zien and Malcolm Gets. well actually there's a lot more actors i love but they're the most important to me
4. (especially lately) drawfee and dropout shows! drawfee has been my comfort youtube channel for a long time though to clarify
5. my cat! Szürki! i feel bad for mentioning him this late on but oh well

I finally watched the 1998 bootleg of anb and let me tell you it is my favorite thing. I had to make a list of everything iconic about it.
-Gordon before leaving for lunch: “to be continued.”
-Kristen Chenoweth literally sounds like a theatrical 10 year old it’s hilarious
-mr bungee’s bike
-just Chip Zien as bungee in general
-the bigass window that they had as part of the set
-Rhoda: stands up so fast the chair falls over
-whatever the frick the doctor’s accent was supposed to be
-“But I will call his mother. And Roger.” “Roger?” “His uh. Lover.” Was there instead of just “he’s gay” and honestly I like this version of the dialogue better
-the homeless woman lowkey looks like a minecraft villager
-the Heart and Music choreography enough said
-Mimi walking forward on the throwing out books line
-THE HEART AND MUSIC CHOREO
-just some iconic things about it:
— Rhoda and Nancy D running across the stage like zombies to get to their places
—Roger and Mimi dancing together
— the conga line
-Mimi: goes to ask the doctor something. The doctor, belting in her face: “WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT”
-Penny Fullers voice when she sang “nothing’s tougher than mother.”
-Norm Lewis’s voice in general. Just like every time he sings. Beautiful.
-he did the sound of music turn at “feeling wild and free”
-I know this isn’t exclusive to this production but can we just appreciate the violins in Sailing
-just the entirety of Gordo’s Law of Genetics and And They’re Off
-“in a suit” this is like the only production where he’s actually in a suit
-“So, how are you?” “As good as I can be for someone who’s peeing out brain fluid.” ICONIC EXCHANGE
-that guy who was laughing for like ten seconds after the “go get dinner” “we’re not hungry” bit
-“so go” as he wraps Roger’s arm around him, clearly not wanting him to go
-“later oOooOn” Norm Lewis I love you and all your riffs
-“MRI is tomorrow” “Thank you SO MUCH for reminding me.”
-“and getting older. HYELLO!”
-“once I was practically thin.” “Ohhhh :(”
-literally just Richard in general. What an icon.
-Sitting Becalmed in the Lee of Cuttyhunk wins the prize for ‘how uncomfortable can I possibly get’
-the doctor’s accent randomly appearing and disappearing
-“his son, ShMeNdRiCk Jr! :)”
-“and if you snore, AAAAAAAAAAAOOOOORE!”
-Gordon and Roger: having a sad, tender moment. Lisa, quietly to an audience member: “canyousparesomechange?”
-“the preferred word in any kind of situation is-“ (bungee whistles for Gordon to come over like a dog)
-bungee: “yes I will- harmony!”
-“in the middle of my fright! I- *forgets the words* in the middle of the night.”
-People actually laughed at the “how to meet a sailor” line
-“surgery’s... delayed! Oh!”
-the low note at the end of A Really Lousy Day in the Universe as well as “they all are. They aaaaaaallllll are.” Just the way they sang it aaah chills
-ROGER’S BRAIN DEAD HAT ADHLKFSSHLLGSDJLL I HATE IT
-THE FINGER SNAPS ADHLKFSSHL I LOVE IT
-whatever the frick Rhoda wearing
-“uuuuhh yes it is”
-Rhoda the zombie puppet
-Mimi in her dress looks like she’s about to host the Tonys
-“I’m okay.” Was spoken and I just. My heart.
-that one person who kept clapping extremely loudly after The Music Still Plays On
-the ridiculously long pause before Don’t Give In
-the frog noises
-CHIP ZIEN
-Mimi realizing Gordon was awake
-BUNGEE HAD A THING ON HIS BIKE THAT MADE FROG NOISES
-“time for our last sponge bath together!” “No! :0”
-“all gone is incredible strife” (t-poses)
-Roger and Gordon had an umbrella during The Homeless Lady’s Revenge. Like they were that committed to the fact that it was raining.
-literally all of The Homeless Lady’s Revenge
-the killer choreography returns for Time and Music
-then gesturing to the real piano player during bows
So yeah in conclusion nothing will ever top the 1998 production of anb.
