Merino silk blend from a local dyer, getting close to halfway I think :)
Will be chain plying and then theoretically socks if I've got the thickness right. And I need to learn socks...

So I want to make a pair of socks for every month next year, and am currently collecting hand-dyed yarns from small, UK based creators. These are the ones I have that have not yet been wound into cakes and they are all so pretty and soft!
I'm still waiting on one that's still to be dyed and dispatched called Unicorn Farts (looks as good as it sounds) to take the number up to 12.
L-R: Venom (Malton Yarns), Nautilus, Release The Kraken, Poinsettia (Steampunk Sheep Yarns), Raspberry Pie (Chimera Crafting - no longer in business), Hocus Pocus, Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots (Red Robin Yarns).

Foraged wild fennel dye
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Skeins as they were drying and I was already so excited about how they were turning out
In autumn, I took myself picking in the definitely haunted abandoned orchid behind the railway, between the housing estate and the wetlands. There were signs of at least one person living in the bushes there, and I hoped that I wasn't about to surprise anyone/make them feel uncomfortable. I helped myself to blackberries, and stripped the wild growing fennel of all the feathery leaves I could find. (Fennel is invasive in my part of the world.) The plants in the orchid were tall after a wet summer, going to seed. In the way of annuals going to seed, there weren't many leaves left, but plenty for my first experiment with fennel.
Tumblr media
Pictured: my dear friend with a giant fennel plant. This friend first showed me the abandoned orchid.
I try to do 1:1 leaves to weight of fibre in all my dye baths, but I'm not precise about it.
The dyebath of fennel leaves I heated and let cool over several days. The smell was the most potion of potions I have ever. Aniseed but turned up to 11.
I mordanted my fibre with alum before adding it to the dyebath
After heating and cooling to extract the colour, I strained out the leaves and added the alum mordanted fibre. Gently heated and held at 80c for as long as I could be bothered (an hour). (Note to self for next time: try flowers as well as leaves.)
Modified with iron water - warm water and {iron water preparation} left in bucket for 1 hour. This shifts the tone from a yellowish green down to a forest green <3

So I can never seem to get a good photo, it is much much greener in real life I swear

And they're done!!
Tumblr media
first post about these socks
second post about these socks
What an intensely enjoyable knit! I've never done so much colorwork before, and certainly never with 3 strands! What a challenge, but also highly engaging. These socks felt like they took no time at all! They're also quite soft and pretty darn warm, so I'm very excited to add these to my closet come fall & winter. Thank you to Oakwood Knits for a fantastic sock design!
Like the first attempt, I tracked my daily progress, but I started doing so after I caught up to where I stopped from my first attempt, which took half the time to do this attempt!

These still need to be blocked, and I have a set of sock blockers on the way, but I didn't want to wait to share because I just am so pleased with them. I learned a handful of new things making these, namely continental, to hold the secondary color, and how to better tension strands of color. I knit these both at the same time across two circulars, and the little onion* skeins of Palette actually made it so I could use only one skein at a time for both socks! I did make a little ball for each sock for the third color rows, however. But ultimately, it worked out great. I also did Eye of the Partridge heels and toes, because I know my feet and those are the spots that need the most reinforcing, and I also added in a single row of purls on the top at the toes because I like how it looks on socks.
Bonus: the start of the spring socks, since I missed the KAL for them and was so jazzed by the summer socks I want to knit more!
Tumblr media
*I don't know of they're really called onion skeins, but I can't remember if they have an official name and they look like onions to me, so there you go
pattern: Oakwood Knits
yarn: Knit Picks Palette

I dyed this to pair with Haunted, and named it Batty.
I dyed these as they were twisted up, so the black and grey would not get to everything... I originally wanted to dye pastels into the white spots, but liked how smokey this felt.

Despite knitting for 7 some odd years I’d never knitted socks. The process of making them always seemed incredibly complex, and just pure magic to be honest. But I decided I was finally going to knit a pair, no matter how complex it seemed. After finishing these two pairs of toe up socks, I’m not really sure what I was so scared of. These were quite easy and fun to do.
The socks on the right were my first attempt, and the ones on the left are my second.

Raspberry Eyelet Cowl
Can you tell I like knitting eyelets? 😅 And that I have a penchant to make big lacey cowls out of sock yarn?
This one has tonal variegation with shades of magenta, raspberry, red-violet, and a warm gray that barely skews pink. Three bands of open eyelet lace (k2tog YO to the rescue!) are broken up by garter stitch bands.
Yarn: Forbidden Fiber Co Gluttony Sock (merino wool/nylon)
Measures ~8" tall by ~67" circumference

all of my knitted creations from 2024 so far, a sweater im frogging, my 2 pairs of socks (my first socks ever), a pair of fingerless gloves (also my first ever try), some fluffy leg warmers, and the beginning of a cabled sweater (my first ever try at cable patterns)

So i’ve perfected my personal sock recipe.
I tried something out with smaller needles for the toe area and reinforcing the ball of the foot with a slip stitch and I LOVE how it turned out.
They’re sooo comfy, warm, and a little supportive. It’s only taken knitting like… 15 pairs of socks to get to this point??
Yarns are Patons Classic Wool Worsted in Brown Mustard and Dark Gray Mix.

Wanted to share more of the process that lead to Haunted. There are accidentally two versions, one being super neon-vibrant green, and one with more somber swampy green. They both turned out really cool, but have *slightly* different vibes.
These are 50g mini skeins, dyed for spooky season and paired with a contrasting mini.
