Ok so for Buffy's big coming out scene, you dressed her mother and her mortal enemy/temporary world saving partner/gnc pseudo fella who has "come a courtin'" in exactly the same colors?? You said "oh her mother and this random guy? Who are facing her as if a united front? Yeah they're the same." Like, from the blocking, it's like they are both confronting her, which they kind of are, saying "ok this is it, who are you going to be?" But they are presenting two opposite paths; her mother, loved and familiar and normal, is asking her to abandon her calling, her queerness, because it can't possibly be her, it's too dangerous, she has to stay in the home, with her, where everything is safe and expected and normal/heteronormative. While Spike knows she is coming with him because it's who she is; she has to follow her calling and embrace her queerness and save the world because she can't not, and he is going to help, both with the world saving and helping her embrace her queerness (though the latter really kicks into gear a few years later). So each represents her two options before her, red pill and, well blue pill that is also dressed in red, but the point stands.

But if this is the case, why dress them the same?? Why put Joyce in a spikecore outfit? Retroactively, it's great because it's like "yes this is Buffy's family and they are dressed the same like it's a family reunion and they forgot to make t shirts so they just color coded instead." But it's not later, it's now.

Maybe it's like, "Here is her enemy, we know this guy is her enemy (ignore the fact he is in her domestic space and actively working with her to save the world which he explicitly said he wanted to do) and here is her mother, who is dressed just like her enemy, because we are foreshadowing that her mother is about to become another kind of enemy to Buffy." It's saying "you know these colors, you know they mean danger, shit is going to go down."
