The other adorable millies who arrived last week: Spirostreptida sp. ‘Gorontalo’. A little larger than the Centrobolus, but still one of the mid-sized species.

do millipedes spray cyanide? i relocated a couple while cleaning my yard and now i'm mildly concerned
the millipedes that release hydrogen cyanide release it as a gas. these include various flat-back millipedes, although there’s plenty of flat-backs that just use a benzoquinone-based fluid defense chemical, which is what many other common millipedes produce (including the round-backed juliforms one often finds in the yard). in either case, you’d need to swallow a millipede for it to do you any great harm.
Tumblr media
Apheloria virginiensis is one local to me, and I am guilty of picking them up when on walks in the woods to smell the cyanide: it’s a fragrant scent of almonds or cherries.
cyanide-producing millipedes, since their defense chemical is gaseous, really can’t hurt you unless you’ve already ingested the millipede or are like huffing dozens of them, which would both be probably be actions deserving of consequences.
other millipedes’ liquid chemicals usually just smell foul, like burning rubber. most millipedes under 3-4 cm aren’t going to pack much of a toxic punch at all. some of the larger tropical species in the Spirobolida and Spirostreptida can cause caustic burns if it isn’t washed off soon with detergent or if you have very sensitive skin. I’ve harassed plenty a Narceus and gotten some yellow, later dark purple stains on my hands, but that was the extent of it.

The bugs
Hey there, I'm Ray and I keep mainly millipedes as a hobbiest and I'm still learning a lot about insects.
I have a number of millipedes and will try to keep an up to date list of species here, as well as any I've named 💕
Millipedes - Gaint Olive/striped Leg(Telodeinpus Aoutii) Adult - Just the one and she's called Shoelace! -Gaint Olive/striped Leg(Telopedinpus aoutii) juvenile x3 - Thai Rainbow(Apeuthes sp. Thailand) just the one called Rain! - Spotted Fire(Centrolobus splendidus) x 2 - Gaint Golden(Orthroporus Ornatud) x 3 - Bumblebee(Anadenobolus monilicornis) x 14 - Yellow Dragon(Orthomorpha communis)x1 - Smocky Oak(Narceus gordanus) x1 - Red-Legged (Epibolus pulchripes) x19 - Giant African train(Archispirostreptus Gigas) x3
I have 12 baby millipedes as well! I'll try to ID them once they're bigger and have more colour. But I believe they are spotted reds and MAYBE some bumblebees.
Woodlice/isopods - Wild caught ?? - Dairy cows 70-100 - Mixed Armadillidium 30+ There's tons of other speices I'd love to get in the future! The new few I plan to get if possible are:- - Candy Ball pills(Phopalomeris carnifex), such super cute little guys, I believe they're a type of pillbug? Related to millipedes? Got more research to do but I hope to get come soon! - Ivory Millipedes(Chicobolus spinigerus) their colours are so nice and they're so itty bitty! - Avatar Millipedes(Apirotreptida sp) I LOVE their yellow legs and feelings, they're the next millipedes I'd like to get once I have the funds for another tank. - Cameroon rosey leg millipede(Spirostreptidae sp) my friend got some of these and oh I loved them! They're so big and active. - Coromus Vittatus, a type of flatback Millipede that I've had before and would love another of. - Purple Ivory Millipede(Chicobolus spinigerus) I just LOVE the purple on them, they're also said to be climbers!
For other plans I want to redo the isopod tanks, get them some nicer tanks with clear glass/plastic so I can see what they're up to. More sticks and branches in the big tank to the big boys have more to climb on.
Passed pets - Bark - Coromus Vittatus
I won't be listing any that pass here that I didn't name.

The “trachystreptoform” species of Spirostreptidae, i.e., species which would formerly have been ascribed to the tribe Trachystreptini, from the Udzungwa Mountains are (re)described, including one new genus and five new species: Attemsostreptus reflexus Akkari & Enghoff, 2019, A. cataractae Enghoff sp. nov., A. leptoptilos Enghoff sp. nov., A. julostriatus Enghoff sp. nov., Lophostreptus tersus (Cook, 1896) (= L. ptilostreptoides Carl, 1909 syn. nov.), L. magombera Enghoff sp. nov., and Udzungwastreptus marianae Enghoff gen. et sp. nov. The type material of Lophostreptus regularis Attems, 1909 (= L. tersus) is discussed. The discussion includes paragraphs on the classification and the Udzungwa fauna of Spirostreptidae, on grouping of the Udzungwa trachystreptoform species in relation to altitude, and on the possibly recent immigration of A. reflexus and L. tersus into the Udzungwa Mts.

Giant African millipede, Archispirostreptus gigas, Spirostreptidae
Found mostly in forests in lowland parts of East Africa, this species is the largest millipede in the world, reaching lengths of around 13 inches (33cm). Once popular in the pet trade, imports to the United States are now illegal due to the mites that live symbiotically on the millipedes; it’s thought if introduced, they could potentially become an agricultural pest.

hey do you have any tips on millipede keeping?
millipedes are an entire class of diverse animals, so I’m basing these very broad care tips on just the subtropical to tropical members of the orders Spirobolida and Spirostreptida, which covers the most commonly bred examples. you should consult a more comprehensive source if you are considering keeping any though! McMonigle's book on millipedes in captivity is my recommendation and probably what most people I know base their care guides on.
substrate as deep as the largest adult of the species is long, and deeper is better even than that. don’t dig in it except in emergencies. should be as much well-rotted hardwood as possible in the substrate, and leaf litter on top. rest can be topsoil of some sort, or coconut husk if you must. some species prefer wood over leaves or vice versa, but can't hurt to have both. keep them a bit drier than moist, so that the soil is soft and easy to burrow in but not waterlogged. slabs of bark or sticks can be good surfaces to climb and live under. spirobolidans lay eggs in wood-pulp pellets nearly indistinguishable from frass, so it might be wise to conserve old substrate to pick out any kids that hatch from it.
good treats include cucumber, other squashes, fish food (especially algivore pellets), and apple. remove any food that starts to mold.
I don't know much about heating them since I have not kept any species that demand heat. warm room temperatures and above are probably best for most species.

A handsome giant African millipede (Archispirostreptus gigas) I met while working in the Kalahari almost ten years ago. They can get to be fifteen inches long, and often carry around little mites who don't do them any real harm, but keep their exoskeletons nice and clean! #fieldwork #desert #commensal #mites #partners #hygeine #meerkatmanor #animals #wildlifephotography #wildlife #cute #legs #entomemeology #armor #travel Sustr V, Tajovsky K, Semanova S, Chronokova A, Simek M (2013) The giant African millipede, Archispirostrepus gigas (Diplopoda: Spirostreptida), a model species for ecophysiological studies.
