Stede is just: Wait Izzy I thought you said these were your children?
Izzy: Yeah. They are.
Stede: But Mr. Bellamy just introduced them as his children??
Sam: Well, yes, they are also my children.
Stede: Did you. Did you use a surrogate???
Izzy: I fuckin wish we had.
Stede: Are they adopted????
Sam: No—well, Johnny is, but not the rest.
Izzy: That’s exactly why Johnny’s my favorite.
Stede: ????????????

Just finished my third full rewatch of OFMD and every time I’ve forgotten to look, so I’ve gotta ask - where does the “Edward has a bad knee” lore come from?
Does he wear a brace? Does he walk with a limp that I don’t see? Is it a history thing? Is it just a cool fanon thing that came up over time?
Please someone help me, I’ve gotta know 😭

kinda want izzy to absolutely decimate stede at chess and I can't explain why
#ofmd#stizzy#izzy hands#stede bonnet#like... maybe stede is teaching ed because he wants to have someone to play against and ed is trying his best to learn#and brilliant tactician that he is ed of course can understand the game and the rules very well that's not even remotely the issue#it's just that... well the game is about strategy and planning and anticipating your opponent's moves and ultimately overpowering them#and that's quite like pirating now isn't it except these are tiny wooden pieces on the board and ed is just used to this kind of strategic#planning on a much larger and livelier level with higher stakes and with the added element of human unpredictability and never quite#knowing what rules someone else is playing by. so he does learn and he plays okay but tends to lose focus somewhere in the first ten turns#so one day they're trying to get through a full game and izzy is sitting off to the side watching them play and ed is kind of trying but his#mind is already wandering elsewhere and he makes frankly ridiculously bad move and izzy is just like 'wait' then sighs walks over to them#and puts the piece back and makes a different move instead saying 'do this instead' and ed's face is just like ??? confused betrayal because#why and how did he not know izzy could play chess?? and stede's eyes of course fill with excitement at the thrill of a new opponent and also#because he's been taking it easy on ed while he gets the hang of the game but is actually rather skilled at chess and would love to impress#with his skills even if the only person who would truly get the brilliance is izzy (and stede admits to himself that izzy does know what#he's doing given that the move he corrected for ed is exactly what he would have done)#so anyway stede does his whole big eyes hopeful voice *vague gestures* thing and is like 'oh you play? care for a game?' and izzy stares#him down for what feels like forever but is actually about 8 seconds before saying 'one. one game' so they reset the board and it's only#fair for stede to let izzy go first but for izzy's first turn instead of moving a piece he rotates the whole board so the white pieces are#in front of stede and says 'i don't think so. not letting you have the excuse to say i only won because i went first' and stede#is a little taken aback but you know what? challenge accepted. game on#it's about twenty turns in when stede starts getting nervous that izzy does in fact know his shit and another ten turns later when he#realizes he may be in over his head#and while it isn't a carelessly simple defeat izzy does end up beating stede#and isn't there just something so satisfying about being the cause of stede making the displeased but invigorated expression he's wearing#(do i have any clue how izzy became a chess genius? no but we can speculate. maybe he played regularly with someone on a ship growing up bc#it was a good way to pass the downtime in an entertaining way without having to talk much at all. or maybe he learned as a child and was#required to keep strict hours of practice so because really good but kind of resented it so maybe this is the most he's ever enjoyed playing#or maybe he was watching as stede taught ed to play and just picked up on some of stede's strategies and/or snuck one of his chess books out

One thing I want more of in fic is other pirates recognizing that Izzy is actually a pretty decent pirate and trying to poach him. Maybe they offer him more money. Maybe they try and drive a wedge between him and Blackbeard. But he'll occasionally get headhunted and I'd love to see how Blackbeard would respond.
Got distracted and forgot to answer this lol
I personally am a huge fan of Edward being possessive as fuck, so I too would very much like to see some form of this. Or write it, though that would not be happening any time soon. I do have a rough idea for something with Izzy in Spanish Jackie's, where some guy decides to push his luck since Blackbeard is all happy tipsy and distracted with Stede, and Jackie, Fang, and Ivan are all like "Oh fuck" while the Revenge crew throughout the room is like "What's happening?"
Izzy is not being receptive at all, but he isn't telling the guy to fuck off or ending the conversation either, which for Izzy looks kinda receptive. Fang grumbles that "Izzy has way too much fun watching people walk into their own swords" and "is he trying to start a brawl?"
And Edward is subtly but definitely watching Izzy's new "friend" like a hawk as they all wait for the tension to snap.
Because Izzy is Edward's - it's written on his face and his clothes and everyone fucking knows it - and nobody fucking touches Edward's things. Not his gun if he leaves it on the table, not his jacket if he throws it over a chair, and not Izzy unless you want to fucking die.
Anyway, like all exceptionally bold and stupid men, this guy at some point grasps Izzy's arm in an overly friendly way, Edward is making his way toward them before anyone can blink with a grin that's all teeth, Ivan is catching a baffled Stede to suggest he sit this out until Ed's done, while Stede was entirely unaware something was happening until the exact moment Edward bolted out his seat.
Also Edward might have Izzy cut off at least one of the guy's fingers while being insanely affably threatening, while Spanish Jackie is across the room like "I fucking knew this would happen..."

a thing i have JUST realized, isn't the human brain amazing lol -- is that we talk about izzy's thoughts and feelings on ed, on blackbeard, about how he serves one but not the other, etc, etc, and how it means he never loved or even respected the True Man Underneath It All but rather the bloodthirsty legend of a pirate--
e x c e p t izzy is not the first person who makes the distinction between edward and blackbeard. it's ed himself, when he says "actually, i want to be called edward from now on".
before, when he was with stede, it didn't bother him at all that the crew called him blackbeard. that was his name! he was blackbeard, what else would they call him. only stede and izzy got to "ed" or "edward" him, because they were closer -- stede was his first close friend, izzy was his friend and first mate for decades. (note that fang was with ed the longest, but he doesn't call him by his name! you gotta deserve it.)
izzy doesn't do anything inappropriate or out of proportion when he snaps at the crew to call him blackbeard or captain -- that's who ed is, is supposed to be, to them. they're not friends! they even call stede captain, and have you seen that guy?
it's ed that makes the connection between his current state: draped in fuchsia robes, singing sad songs about how sad he is, showing his vulnerable and emotional state in front of people who are supposed to respect and trust his authority. and by that he splendidly loses that authority, to the point that wee john calls him ed, and when izzy snaps at him for disrespecting his captain, ed goes no, actually, yknow what, do call me edward! and then he goes on to encourage the crew to sing as well and hey, actually, why are we being pirates! we should do a talent show!
the distinction is clear here. before all that, in izzy's eyes, his boss was blackbeard, captain, ed/edward -- different names for different occasions, but one and the same guy. but now? this guy singing songs in a pink bathrobe doesn't want to be called blackbeard, he's edward! ed time now! we're going to eat marmalade and express our feelings in front of everyone! and hold talent shows! Ya Hoo !
yeah, it's no wonder izzy doesn't want that. he wants his competent captain back, and this current dude, edward? he's not him. so, uh,
#shrimp thoughts#AND it's not izzy that's the final nail to magenta ed's coffin. it's the lads calling for EDDIE to come and sing for them again#right after izzy -- his first mate! the guy who followed him for all those decades with only mild complaining and an occasional#fed up tirade here and there -- tells him he has no reason to respect him the way he is now. if that's the way with izzy -- then fuck!#what about these guys? those basically strangers to whom he stupidly bared his soul? who are treating him like a source of entertainment?#man's just lost izzy's support. he doesn't have stede (the guy who has the sort-of loyalty of the crew). and the crew respects and admires#blackbeard -- but ed? eddie? uh oh.#look at his face and body language before and after the 'hey eddie give us another song!'. before: he's clearly upset by what just happened#but he starts to fix the robe on himself. starts trying to deal with it and stuff. but the second he hears that one sentence? he freezes.#he turns his head towards the source of the voices -- the crew chanting his name -- very slowly. his eyes are barely moving#this is not to say that izzy's words had no effect on him because they clearly did! but he did not go full kraken to make a point that izzy#is wrong and actually pink and karaoke are good. he goes kraken because attack is the best defense. and it's so fun when#everyone laughs at your jokes and claps when you sing! it's just that people are fickle as fuck :/#tl;dr the bekrakening is a complex process that doesn't have its source in one grumpy first mate who just wanted everyone to do their jobs#but rather in a fuckton of factors from which one was -- yeah -- stede abandoning ed after he bared his feelings to him. leaving him a#confused raw wound. which would be fine if ed was a teenager but unfortunately he's a scary pirate who loves a good maim#this post is soooooooo long oh my god i could have fit it in three short paragraphs probably

Trigger warnings: violence implied and mentioned sexual and regular The ship Alma Bonnet takes to attend boarding school in Charlestown is raided on it's way there. Her first impulse is to fight: to kill as many men as she can manage...only her body doesn't want to cooperate.
She ends up huddled on deck with the other passangers as their possessions are ransacked and the manifest is gone over with.
People are killed, a lot of people are killed, their blood soaking the hem of her dress.
She doesn't understand why a commotion starts among the pirates while they are going over the passanger list, she doesn't know why she's singled out.
She regains her ability to move properly when they drag her to the narrow plank that's been thrown between the two ships.
Alma isn't stupid, she knows what happens to girls who are kidnapped by pirates. She twists and kicks as much as her dress allows for it, eventually sinking her teeth into someone's arm. She isn't sure what she thinks to accomplish but everything must be better than...
The world fades, turns black and quiet.
"...got another bitch, just like you!" Alma hears when she returns to consciousness.
A door creaks and she is tossed onto rotten, stinking straw.
The door slams shut behind her and footsteps tell her her captor has removed himself.
It takes forever for her to regain her composious enough to sit up and look around. The sell is damp, stinking and cramped, it's also occupied.
A man is sitting against the hull, his clothes are dirty and torn, his face and hands, as much as she can see of them are grimy and it looks like his eye has been blackened a while back. His gotee is scraggy and his salt and pepper hair tangled and greasy looking.
"Stop staring, girl!" The man growls looking away.
There are angry red marks on his throat, Alma notices.
"I'm sorry, sir, I'm not myself I'm afraid." She answers in her most polite voice, which makes him grimace.
"Fuck!" Izzy Hands groans, "even imprisoned I can't escape fucking toffs!"

I desperately want to see Ed and Stede roleplaying
And it's not even because I want them to have sex (and I do). But let's be honest. These two would embrace their roles like they were auditioning for a community theater play.
Lucius or Frenchie or even Olu might mention off hand how much roleplaying spiced up their love lives before explaining to their very confused captains exactly what it is.
"You play a character," Lucius would explain. "Something sexy. To spice up the moment, yunno?"
And these two would hear play a character and run an entire fucking 5k with it.
It would take them a solid 2 hours to even get to the sexy stuff, because Ed was so invested in running a professional bed and breakfast and Stede would be so enamored by Ed (Jeff) explaining why he chose lavender soap for the rooms instead of jasmine and they'd recruit some of the crew members to pretend to be guests, which ends up being really fucking awkward because Lucius expected it to be like a freaky orgy thing, but these two just genuinely wanted them to rate the services provided by Jeff's Inn by the Sea and give their opinions on whether or not they should put out orange marmalade for breakfast or raspberry jam.
"I really don't think you're understanding roleplay," Lucius will try and say.
"Hey!" Stede would snap. "Ed's doing a lovely job. You're a top rate innkeeper, darling!"
"But I think the point is like... what would happen if you showed up without money or something like that. Yunno? Like... how would you pay for the room...?"
"If he can't pay, he can't stay, man," says Ed, like it's obvious.
"Uh huh. But... you wouldn't let him offer to pay it some other way...?"
"Bro!" Ed has the audacity to look horrified. "I can't just go ahead letting people stay in rooms for a handy! I'd never make any money that way! I've got a business to run here!"
"Yeah, Lucius," says Stede. "He's got a business to run!"
"Right then," says Lucius. "My mistake."
(they get to the sexy times eventually. mostly because Ed is so incredibly turned on when Stede shows him how to fold napkins into swans, and nothing is hotter than stellar customer service.)

Very confused by the recent proliferation of posts describing Ed and Stede as real sleepy cozy guys. Because, yes, they are a couple of cozy bastards who love to luxuriate in soft, fine things, but they are also a pair of high-energy weirdos. Real shenanigan-havers. Improv partners even.
Lock these two in a room for 48 hours, and yes they’ll have a good sleepy time cuddlenap. But they’ll also have built a fort, finalized plans for their new business as a traveling theater company, and invented the concept of TTRPGs. Also they escaped like 5 hours ago.

Stede's season 1 arc only makes as much sense as it does because he's GAY gay (has no attraction to women) but I think Anne Bonny really truely confirmed that he suuuuuper doesn't swing that way, because Stede's type so far seems to be a cool pirate who shares his interests and is unapologetically into him (that last part is important because of Stede's self esteem issues) and Anne Bonny genuinely ticks all three of those boxes. If they wanted to play him bisexual it would have been very easy for Stede to express attraction to Anne but turn her down in an effort to remain true to Ed and have it be proof that he's committed to his relationship with Ed even when they're broken up, but instead they had him be confused and a little weirded out that she was kissing him. Like this was not a "you're lovely but I'm engaged" moment it was a "eugh, why are we kissing?????" Moment.

Roach Appreciation
Samba Schutte does my favorite background acting on this show, and this post is showing some appreciation! He's on par with Matthew Maher in absolutely destroying one liners, and his emotive acting conveys just as much.
So.... here are some of my favorite scenes!
At the beginning of 1x2, I love his looks of annoyance as Pete is telling his story and Stede is so in to it.
Tumblr media
At the end of 1x3, his terror and confusion over the Jim reveal makes the scene.
Tumblr media
During Ed and Stede's storytime at the beginning of 1x6, I love his cute Tell Us prompting to Stede asking Ed how to use people's fear against them.
Tumblr media
At the end of 1x6, I love that he laughs at Stede's awful dad joke that he was proud of.
Tumblr media
At the end of 1x8, he really sells the sadness about Karl.
Tumblr media
At the end of 1x10, he's so happy about that talent show!
Tumblr media
In 2x2, he is the audience's reaction to watching LuPete kiss.
Tumblr media
In 2x5, his "Imagine if it bleeds" to stabbing the Cursed Red jacket is the best.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of 2x6, his excited gasp to "Today is Calypo's birthday" is the best acting in the season (even through Rhys Darby tried very hard to compete at the end of 2x3)!
Tumblr media
At the end of 2x8, he's just so happy when LuPete is married.
Tumblr media
Such a cutie. I love him.

I really enjoy the opening "morning after" scene, because it's just very...them: Ed bringing the breakfast (with a flourish), Stede lying there so pleased with himself.
I love that Ed really has no real guidance or experience for how to behave in this situation. He's never made a real breakfast, he's never brought anyone breakfast in bed, but damn he's gonna do it for the man who took him apart and put him back together.
I love how Stede is confused by the twine, but immediately just fucking melts when Ed explains it.
I also love Stede's expression when Ed asks, "Do you remember that night I died?" How Ed describes the vision so wistfully, about Stede just floating in the water, and how him just being there saved Ed's life. I love how Ed is trying to say that Stede doesn't need to kill to protect him; just be his sweet, gentle self, who is so resilient, so loving, whose very presence makes Ed's life better.
I wish they hadn't been interrupted, because the conversation is leading to Ed being more open and actually maybe trying to tell Stede how he's feeling about piracy. But the scene itself is so sweet and lovely and peaceful for two men who both do value peace in their lives.

Seen some talk around the interwebs about how Izzy is a totally different, or his arc happened too fast, whatever. He is my argument to the contrary.
There are three major factors driving the change in Izzy's behavior.
Default Pirate Culture → Gentleman Pirate Culture
Izzy spent his entire pirate career before Stede acting like, well, a pirate. There wasn't room for softness. Being tough was expected. Blackbeard's crew's culture in particular discouraged weakness to such an extent crew were expected to kill their pets before joining.
In S1, Izzy's relationship to the crews and captains was ambiguous. Was he training the Revenge crew to be proper pirates? Was he in charge when the captains weren't on board? Was Ed planning on killing Stede and everyone aboard, or not? So it's unsurprising Izzy held himself away from Stede's crew instead of becoming part of it, and tried without success to make the Revenge crew follow his lead.
In S2, Izzy ends up in Stede's crew, and Izzy isn't in a place emotionally or socially to try to push to change the culture of the ship. He's outnumbered. Izzy has to adapt. At the very least, all of the expectations he has been living up to his entire pirating career are gone.
Taking Care of Ed → No More Ed
Izzy said he'd been cleaning up Ed's messes his whole life. Scenes from S1 and S2 suggest that is the case. In S1, Izzy is dealing with Ed making strange choices on his search for meaning, which requires him to manage restless crew members and deal with the risky spots Ed puts them all in. Once Stede arrives on the scene, Ed is contradictory and non-communitive, leaving Izzy to wonder if the plan to kill Stede and the promised captaincy were bullshit (they were).
And because Izzy has no emotional intelligence, he thinks that Stede is seducing Ed into losing everything, and he desperately tries to pry the pair ppart.
I mean, we all know what happened in the early S2 episodes. Emotional, off-the-rails Ed trying to himself and everyone else while Izzy desperately tried to protect Ed and the crew, until he was forced to give up on Ed.
After breaking up with Ed via bullet, though, Ed is officially Not Izzy's Problem. Ed isn't a threat to the crew. Stede is incompetent, but was clever and brave enough to escape Zheng's ship and rescue them. Izzy is free to have a drunken breakdown. After, well, he gets to do whatever he wants.
What does Izzy want? Well, he's finding out.
No Trust → Trust
The major reason pirates put on such a tough facade is to protect themselves. Being tough keeps enemies from messing with you. It keeps your crew too afraid to mutiny. It's easy to recognize that Ed puts on a persona of Blackbeard, but Izzy put on a persona too. A weak link can be targeted and broken.
Just look at the scene where Izzy finally breaks down and is comforted by the crew. Izzy doesn't make the choice to be emotionally vulnerable. He is behaving the same way he always with crew who question his orders. He yells, he curses, he commands. It is only the level of his emotional distress and the crew's acknowledgement of it that make him incapable of hiding his pain.
I think it's safe to say that has been hiding grief, frustration, confusion, sadness, etc. behind the "Get back to work!" facade for years. It only crumbled under extreme pressure.
But when Izzy breaks, and is at his most pathetic and vulnerable, the crew have his back. Under Blackbeard, they comfort him, hide him away, and treat his injuries at the risk of the captain's wrath. Under Stede, when he's at his most pathetic, the crew make him a new leg and accept him into the crew without judgement.
There's almost nothing Izzy could do in front of the crew now that would make him look more weak than he was when he was crawling across the floor drunk and repeating "You're born alone, you die alone" over and over. He hit rock bottom and there was a pillow there to catch him.
So, Izzy is in the "talk it through" culture of Stede's Revenge. He is free from obsessing about Ed as a man and as a captain. He is surrounded by people who saw him at his worst and showed him compassion.
Izzy's worst behaviors in S1 were motivated by fear. Fear of the new, fear Ed was losing it, fear of what would happen if he showed weakness. In a "safe space", where he has nothing to worry about? Of course Izzy calms way down. This is the Izzy that swaggered up to Stede on the island and at Spanish Jackie's in S1. Dry, sarcastic, sassy. Some flair for the dramatic with the swordplay.
It is because Izzy feels so safe that he can put on that makeup and perform. Wee John is doing it, and Wee John wouldn't let him do anything embarrassing. He's clearly got confidence in his ability to sing.
He's still Izzy. He says fuck constantly. He's kind of a dick. He offers good advice. He's a dramatic, whether he's cutting his name into someone's shirt or singing in French from a balcony. He's just an Izzy that can be whatever he wants without fear.
