Chasing a Memory

Summary:

Derek had bothered with a quick shower but only spent a few minutes after that to tug on clothes, grab essentials and pile into his car. Nothing else mattered to him than finding who needed him and why.

Derek sped towards the city limits not knowing exactly why but consumed by the overwhelming urge to be somewhere. Someone needed him and that was a bone deep revelation but every time he had tried to focus on exactly who it was, he got lightheaded and the knowledge would escape him. He spent three days chasing his tail and it was time for him to take drastic measures. He had picked up the phone and made the call.

“Nephew? Well my my, what a surprise this is.”

“Believe me I wouldn’t be calling if it wasn’t of utmost importance.”

“I take it that seeking the status of your favorite uncle’s wellbeing is not your reason?”

“You’re my only uncle. So, not even close but hey you’re still kicking. So, that’s lovely.”

“For all you know I went back to the dirt as often as you check in.”

“Peter! I’m not interested in this right now. I need you to meet me.”

“Where?”

“You know where.”

The call hadn’t lasted long but it was long enough for Derek to feel slight regret for the entire predicament he found himself in and he had tried to talk himself out of it many times. It had taken a full five days before he wore down enough to consider it and that was when Derek realized that if he felt so strongly about this, then calling his uncle was the obvious next step. That meant it must be serious and had to be taken seriously.

He wouldn’t put up with any baiting or tolerate any teasing nor entertain his uncle’s antics for even a millisecond. This was something clearly evidenced on his face based on the fact that one look made his uncle snap his mouth closed before he could utter something that he realized would result in a tussle.

Peter was unusually quiet as if the state his nephew was in was evidence enough that something was definitely wrong but first they needed to get to the root of the situation to fully understand what they were dealing with.

After offering Derek a cup of tea which Derek accepted graciously albeit with hesitancy, Peter felt it was safe to proceed yet still to do so with caution. “So, Derek? Tell me everything.”

Derek took a sip of the tea and felt himself settle but only slightly. “Something is clawing me up inside. It’s nothing like when my wolf is restless although it is restless. There’s more to it than that. I have this overwhelming urge that something is wrong and someone needs…me.”

Peter watched his nephew with assessing eyes. “Describe the feeling.”

“Well it’s like my heart is pounding but I’m just sitting there and I’m terrified but there was a freaking song I love playing on the speakers. It’s like there are shadows even when the sun is blinding and it’s like I’m cold and I never get cold but what really gets me is the all consuming belief that I’m alone and awash with utter despair.”

Peter was tense as he recalled hearing of things like this before but he had not expected to ever deal with it personally nor for any who shared his blood to experience it. Still, he shoved aside any qualms about helping when he saw the shattered look on his nephew’s face. “I’m going to help you but answer me one question first, Derek, okay?”

Derek gave a nod, keeping his gaze on his uncle though his eyes seemed glazed over slightly.

“Whatever has happened is not your fault. You know that, correct?” he asked, almost certain Derek would argue that it was, in fact, his fault and that would mean a delay. He only hoped that whoever needed Derek would be able to hold on long enough for Derek to lose the belief that he was somehow responsible but this time his nephew surprised him.

“Realizing that this person is in trouble and that their feelings match ones I’ve felt in exact detail many times in my life makes me think there’s a possibility it’s my fault but I won’t know until I find them,” he stated before setting the cup down on the coffee table and resting his head in his hands. “If only I could latch onto their face or their name.”

Peter tilted his head. “What do you mean by that?”

Derek sighed. “I get this inkling of who it is but when I try to focus on it, I get lightheaded and the knowledge fades to the far corners of my mind. Then it’s completely unreachable. I just need to fucking know because someone’s in danger. Someone is hurting and I—” He choked up. “I need to know who they are and I need to know why this is happening to them and to me!” he ground out, his chest rising and falling faster and faster.

Peter’s wolf growled as he moved closer to place a comforting hand on Derek’s arm. Derek got a distinct feeling that his uncle was doing one of two things. He was either humoring him or he knew something and was going to help Derek.

“I know, pup and I’m going to help you. I think I have a pretty good idea of what is happening.”

Derek perked up and looked at his uncle. “You do?” His tone was full of hope and trust.

Peter figured the least he could do was be open with the guy but he had to refrain for just a little longer. There were two very important details he still needed to figure out. Details that may not have seemed crucial but if provided would change everything.

They decided to take the night to regroup and then when the sun had just barely brightened the sky, Derek sat in a wooden chair, straddling it with his claws digging into the wood.

“Are you ready, nephew?” Peter asked as he lined his claws up with the back of Derek’s neck.

The alpha grit his teeth and with a snarl said, “Just do it!”

Peter’s claws sank into the tan column and both men gasped as they were thrown into memories long forgotten by the mind but never by the heart.

FLASH

Pale skin with moles and amber eyes like melted gold and whiskey.

FLASH

A blue jeep older than its owner but as reliable as the boy himself.

FLASH

Paralyzed, sinking down, down, down and then a tug and a strength guiding him up, up, up, inhaling sharply as they break the surface. How?

FLASH

Death, both unnecessary and at his own hands, and a firm but gentle grip on his shoulder, a touch the alpha leaned into and took comfort in the scent of the one grounding him.

FLASH

Fear, plain in the expression on the boy’s face, ivory skin even paler as a yell to ‘Get down!’ erupted from the wolf’s throat, and he listened, trusting the wolf, allowing the wolf to face the feral alpha.

FLASH

A closed door up against which the wolf shoved the sarcastic teen, but thoughts of violence were far from his mind which was instead consumed with the thoughts of how it might have felt to kiss those perfect pink lips, even more tempting when a pink tongue swiped over them to wet them.

FLASH

Derek roared as Peter pulled his bloody claws out of the wolf’s neck and then everything was silent.

After a few minutes had passed, Peter spoke softly. “That must be Stiles.”

“Stiles,” Derek whispered in agreement and a sense of awe. Then, guilt socked him in the gut. How could he have forgotten Stiles, HIS Stiles? How could he have forgotten his mate?!

“We will fix this, nephew. I promise you that.”

Derek nodded, swallowing thickly. “Good. He’s waiting for me and being the smart little shit that he is, he’s using the mate bond to bring me to him.”

Peter gave a feral and sharp grin. “Please tell me that I get to murder someone?”

With an equally terrifyingly sharp and feral grin, Derek stood. “Definitely. Anyone and everyone who had anything to do with my mate’s disappearance and the meddling with our memories, will die and I don’t care if you choose to bathe in their blood. So long as my mate is safe and in my arms alive by the end of it, that’s all I care about.”

The two wolves smirked, their eyes glowing in the dark as they descended the loft stairs later that night. Their fangs glinted in the moonlight and silent as shadows, on the wings of death they rode to deal swift justice on those who harmed Stiles Genim Hale, Alpha Mate, Nemeta Guardian and the boy who ran with wolves.

First & Last Lines

Basically, post the first and last lines of the last 10 fics you posted. WIPs are welcome.

So. Why the heck not, LOL? They're all Teen Wolf. I added two at the end that are unposted WIPs so I put in the first and last sentence from my most recent drafts. Sidenote, this took so much wrangling. LOL. Seriously, it was literally easier to hand-write out the code than it was to use the built in rich text editor, so shoutout to Tumblr for motivating me to re-familiarize myself with HTML. XD I don't have anyone to ping, but I still wanted to participate, so here's my contribution!

1. Worth Fifty Thousand Words, (344 words): Sterek comedy ficlet

First: Stiles gaped after Mrs. Brooks. Derek stood beside him, eyebrow raised. Last: The Sheriff answered half a beat later. "So, dad..."

2. Taste of Truth, (781 words): Danny/Stiles ficlet

First: Danny rubbed his temples and rose early from his meditations. Last: Stiles grinned back, cock-sure. "I'm counting on it."

3. Scent Masked at Midnight, (344 words): post-canon Sterek. Angst with a happy ending/smut.

First: Stiles cracked open the door to the tiny New York apartment he shared with Derek after another night of striking out at the club. Last: “So, Stiles says I’m a maudlin drunk…”

4. Pie, (1,337 words): Sterek with Peter/Sheriff on the side. Pure silly fluff.

First: Derek huffed, rolling his eyes at Stiles' theatrics. Last: Peter was right. It was goddamned delicious.

5. Untitled Swan Stiles, (18,592 words): Sterek comedy/drama with two poly side pairings/heavy side pairing emphasis.

First: “Also! I don’t appreciate you entering the territory unannounced, magic tree stump be damned, and I sure as fuck don’t trust you with our territory, no matter what Derek says,” Stiles yelled, mid-rant, arms waving in not so silent fury. Last: Stiles’ laugh was like music as they climbed back in the Camaro. It filled with the scent of Stiles’ joy as they sped off towards the cafe.

6. Aubergine, (1,494 words): Sterek comedy fic

First: Derek stared down at his phone, brow furrowing. Last: Eventually, Derek, broke the silence. “…Is your offer still on the table?”

7. Ephemeral Sacrifices, (1,294 words): Sterek. Distilled a much more complex fic idea into a single angst to fluff scene.

First: Stiles stared down at his hands, complete and clean of the blood-and-black-goop slurry that should have still stained his skin. Last: Derek listened fondly, occasionally providing input as they walked out of the woods and into the gray light of a new day's dawn.

8. Naga gonna give you up, (17,146 words): Sterek comedy/drama. One major poly side pairing, two minor.

First: “Show me.” Last: Derek answered with a kiss.

9. Trading Ties, (currently 5925 words): Sterek smut with plot fic.

First: Stiles came to slowly, modulating his breathing and heart rate to hide his consciousness as best he could as while he collected his thoughts. Last: ..."Got any more of that kanima venom?"

10. Untitled fic. The chapter I have written is called Remittance. (2016 words): Sterek angstdrama/action fic.

First: Stiles trudged into the room as the Rogers pack filtered in. Last: Even so, they weren't forgotten. He'd see them in his nightmares.

2022 Fic Year in Review

For the first time ever, I tracked my word count in a spreadsheet, which means I get to see the overall patterns in my writing now that the year is over. This includes fun with charts and graphs, as you can see below:

Total words written: 182,526

Worst writing month(s): February-April

I wrote literally 0 words from February 6 to June 1. Ongoing knee pain made 2022 a rough year. The chart above shows my fun little "wow fuck my knees actually" break for physical therapy woes.

Best writing month(s): June-July

Once I committed to AU-gust, I outlined in May and started churning out words in June and July. My June wordcount alone was 53,804, and I at some point wrote 7,522 words in a single day, a harrowing feat I have since blocked from memory.

Total fics published: 37

This includes The Striking Complication, a longfic I finished in early 2022. It also includes 30 fics (~2k-5k each) for AU-gust and several continuations for them, plus two fics for my long-haired Steter collection. In October, I wrote a Stetopher Week sickfic, a werecat Stiles AU and a Sterek horror fic I’ve been wanting to finish forever.

My longest work was The Third Sacrifice at just over 21,000 words.

My shortest work was We’ll Have Words Tomorrow at 1,145 words.

My most popular work by kudos and hits was When It Counts, because I’m apparently not the only one who’s a sucker for tongue-tied!Peter Hale.

My favorite fics were:

When It Counts (Steter) - Surprise, surprise. Can’t overstate how hard I cackled while writing this.

It May Simply Lie in Wait (Sterek) - Haunted houses are my favorite, and I basically wrote this just for me.

a small span of quiet (Steter) - A super fun miscommunication fic, and I adore established Steter.

The Endgame (Steter) - My favorite of the AU-gust sci-fi fics. I wish I had sequel ideas, because I want to know what comes next.

The Third Sacrifice (Sterek) - Horror, my beloved. This was a very self-indulgent romp through some monster-infested woods.

Stuff I Want to Work on in 2023

My dreaded nogitsune fic. I posted it as a ficlet for AU-gust, but I want to do a full version even though it's fighting tooth and nail. Waiting to see if it'll cooperate or get buried in my fic graveyard.

A mob AU sequel, which I told myself at the start of 2022 I would definitely work on, and yet here we are.

A second (smaller) AU-gust??? I am really considering it. They say the mind forgets trauma, and I’ve already mostly forgotten the seven layers of hell this year’s event put me through. If I did the 2023 challenge, I'd probably tweak the rules for myself.

In Conclusion

Tried some new fandom events. Met some AMAZING tumblr mutuals, followers, and commenters who made me feel much more connected to the fandom. Wrote some fun stuff I never would have imagined without help and inspiration. 2022 was a fun year for writing, and I can't wait for what 2023 brings 🥳

Hi Christine! I'm looking for a fic where Derek gets kidnapped by a dragon and I was hoping you could help me find it. The dragon takes him to this canyon and rolls a boulder over a cave to lock him inside when she goes out to steal shopping trolleys full of groceries for him to live off. She likes sparkly things and her favourite are tampons, which Derek promises to bring her some of when the pack eventually rescue him. He's wearing bright orange booty shorts he got from one of the trolleys when they do. She let's him go because Stiles says Derek is his and she can't keep a "prince" if his heart belongs to someone else (I think?). Thanks in advance!

The Stargate fandom has grown very much smaller from its heyday when any of the series were still being created. But there still are pockets of active Stargate folk who are hanging out, creating works and being merry.

The thing is that we're now also spread across different platforms and don't always get to visit together. The Live Journal and Dreamwidth folk don't always spend time on Tumblr and Discord, and vice versa. And the SGA folk don't always know about SG1 things happening. And I know there are SGU folk out there. Somewhere.

And it turns out that there were two separate "SGA Santa" fests going on at the same time in the Fall. There were a couple of folk who did both, but some of us didn't even know the other existed until it posted. That's okay, but either fest may have had a couple more participants if more folk knew they existed.

So I'm putting together a Stargate Fests list. All fests, of all types, of all durations, of all types of work, of all franchises. If it's related to Stargate, I'll include it on the list.

As an example, "Romancing McShep" is almost over for 2022, but I just ran across "McShep Month" on Tumblr. If I wasn't a Tumblr user, I would never have seen it.

I'm looking for your Stargate 'fest' - where fest is used in the broadest form of the word. If you'd like to see your fest added to the list, fill out the form: Fest Submission Form

There isn't a lot there right now, but I'd love to see a longer list... and if there's something critical that needs to be added in terms of fest details, I'd love to know what it is. I'm relying on the fest for details. I'm just looking for enough information to lure folk into looking...

Room For Rent

"Come in," Stiles invited.

Derek stepped into the small room and shook his head. "Nope. You're not staying here another minute."

"Derek! It's cheap and all I can afford!" Stiles protested.

"Anyone and their brother could break into this place," Derek replied, picking up a packing box. "It's not safe."

"I have no place else! And classes start Monday."

Derek took a breath. "The apartment Laura and I rented is still available... I never stopped paying rent..."

Stiles wrapped his arms around Derek. "There are too many memories."

Derek hugged Stiles back. "Maybe we can make some new ones? Together."

Constellations

"I don't know, Derek," Stiles murmured. "It's pretty expensive for a shower curtain." Although Stiles had to admit to himself it was gorgeous.

Derek blushed. "I know, but, well, it makes me think of you."

"Really, big guy?" Stiles smiled as he turned to his husband.

Derek touched the material. "The pattern of stars looks like the scattering of moles on your back. Like you'll never be far away from me." A deeper flush. "Even if I'm only bathing."

"Aww..." Stiles leaned in for a kiss. "For that alone, I'd take a dozen."

Derek smiled as he returned the kiss.

Way To A Man's Heart

The siren whooped once, pulling behind Derek.

Derek sighed. Harassment by the Deputies was part of dating the Sheriff's son.

"Am I in trouble..." Derek looked up from grabbing his license. "Oh. Hey, Jordan."

"Nah," Jordan said. "Saw you alone and thought I'd pass on some advice."

"Anything!" Derek begged.

"Pie. Sheriff loves pie and Stiles never lets him have any," Jordan grinned. "But if you bring it over..."

"Ah! Stiles can't complain... as much," Derek replied.

"Yup!"

"Thanks! That will be helpful," Derek admitted.

As he drove off, Derek wondered if any of Nana's recipes were in the vault.

"Rwarrr!" Eli extended his fingers like claws and swiped at the teddy bear.

"Umm... what?" Derek was confused.

Stiles shrugged. "We saw a sign in the Asian food section of the supermarket that said this is the year of the Tiger. So. Now we're a tiger."

"Oh!" Derek watched as his son pretended to pounce on the defenseless teddy bear.

"It's kinda cute," Stiles said as he leaned against Derek.

Derek wrapped his arm around Stiles and dropped a soft kiss on the side of his head.

"Just like his dad," Derek replied with a smile.

Stiles kissed him back.
