hi! I just recently came across your fics and I’m loving them! I wanted to ask for something with steven conklin and a fem!reader, i was thinking maybe something that starts with angst like maybe she overhears him talking about how annoying she is and clingy but in the end it was all a misunderstanding and he makes it up for her or something.
Anyway if it’s inspired in any taylor swift song it would be even better! Thank you for all of your fics they’re amazing!
PS| Sorry if you can’t understand something, I’m Spanish and English isn’t my first language😞

SUMMARY You overheard a conversation Jeremiah and Steven were having, but him asking about you earlier and made another comment lead to a misunderstanding.
REQUESTS ARE OPEN | STEVEN'S MASTERLIST | MASTERLIST
The music was pretty loud at the party Taylor and Belly had forced you to go to.
All of your small group of friends was there, so all the more reason they said 'you should go'.
But you didn't want to, you didn't like it at all.
But you decided to give them the luxury of your presence. That same afternoon Taylor helped you and Belly to choose what both would wear, the blonde said that y'all had to be the trio of hot friends.
She used the word 'hot' quite often, and sometimes you made fun of it.
"Oh shut up, you look super hot."
Anyway, you loved her just the same.
Already at the party, it had been at least an hour and your glass was empty, so you went to the drinks bar to pour some beer into it.
"So you and y/n are something?" Jeremiah asked Steven, upon hearing your name you decided to stay and listen a little longer.
"Oh yeah, we've been together for a couple of weeks."
"And what is she like? That is, in the relationship."
"I understand you." He laughed taking a swig of his beer and then looked at Jeremiah. "Super clingy..."
"Are you going to drink something?" a boy asked you while you were still at the drinks bar.
"Oh, no, I'm sorry."
When you listened to Jeremiah and Steven's conversation again, you were surprised by his words.
"Yes, it's annoying but it's not something I haven't been able to handle until now." and then they laughed.
You frowned listening to him, did he think you were annoying?
You left there as quickly as you could towards the stairs of the porch of the house.
On Steven's side, he started to worry when he didn't see you anywhere.
"Jere, I have to go, I have to take y/n home."
"Yes, of course, see ya, be careful."
"You too."
And then he started looking for you throughout the house until he left it and saw you on the porch.
"Ah, there's my girl." He stood in front of you so that he could see your face. But you didn't even look him in the eyes. "What happened?"
"Do you think I'm annoying?" you asked quietly and looked at him to hear his response.
"What? No, of course not, why do you think that?" He sat next to you and you sighed, running your hand through your hair.
"I overheard your conversation with Jeremiah, not on purpose, but I overheard you."
And then that conversation came back to Steven's mind and he relaxed at the memory.
"No, he asked me if a girl who has been in love with me since... forever, I think, wasn't annoying, even you've seen her try to flirt with me, love."
You looked at him from the corner of your eye, playing with your hands and you remember that boy interrupted you, it could have been in that small period of time where you didn't listen when Jeremiah said that.
"Come here." He murmured opening his arms, you approached him and he immediately hugged you. "I love you."
"I love you too." You smiled as he rubbed your back, placing a kiss on the top of your head.
"Let's take you home." He stood up offering you one of his hands and you took it to get up. He guided you to his car and the entire way to your house he didn't let go of your hand.

Hi so I was hoping to request a the summer I turned pretty fic(platonic relationship with everyone but steven?) I’m like very insecure about my body. When I was younger I was so skinny to the point you can see my ribs and whenever I eat I feel sick and throw up the food or I have to force myself too. And I just can’t gain weight, and being in a Hispanic house hold isn’t good at supporting or comforting. So I get made fun of a lot for being skinny. I just feel like they wouldn’t make fun of me for being very skinny.

summary: request
steven conklin x reader
a/n: i’m sorry you’ve felt this way ml, but you’re always amazing the way you are. i hope this brings you some happiness and comfort <3
y/n’s been surrounded by people differently her whole life. it’s been a struggle since she was too young, something she shouldn’t have had to worry about. comments and remarks got the best of her, though. little points about her ribs and her slim stomach, people complaining that she was too thin. they said she looked sick, ill, they thought maybe something was wrong with her. any time she went out to the beach or on a hot summer day, she got stares from wrongfully concerned people.
it took her a while to find a group of people who accepted her no matter what her body type was. when she started going to cousins during the summers, she met her true friends. she met the conklins first, seeing them around town with their mother. they were so sweet, giving her accepting looks and not one ounce of judgement in their eyes. then, she met the fishers, who were raised with respect and gentleness for everyone in their community. y/n admired that about them, knowing that they could be good friends.
for a while, she was nervous about what they might think of her. they might see her body and get freaked out, give her dirty looks, think she was ugly. but, to y/n’s surprise, they didn’t give any of those. they were so kind, and didn’t feel the need to make comments.
y/n grew up with comments from her own family as well, feeling like there was no one in the world who would understand. all she wanted was someone on her side, someone who didn’t critique every little part of her. her arms, her legs, her stomach, her face. she wanted people to know her heart and the beauty she has on the inside and the outside.
something was always special about steven. he was always someone to connect with, and he was always ready to have a good time. he was raised well, his mother teaching him proper manners and sweetness in his demeanor. he was a good guy, and maybe he knew it.
y/n and steven had been official since the beginning of the summer. they’d visited each other very often throughout the year, always delighted to see the others face. y/n’s worries and insecurities all disappeared with him, never feeling like he was thinking bad about her. it was a beautiful thing, it was rare, but y/n loved him for it.
it was still new though, y/n’s insecurities popping back up even when she was with her group of friends. some days, she just wanted to stay home and forget about anything. even if she was all dressed, looking in the mirror felt like a drop of energy. she begins the cycle of picking everything people might not like about her.
steven always knew that she had the problem, and that her family didn’t support her either. he never understood how people could be so cruel to a loved one about something that they can’t control. it shocked him even more, because y/n was nothing less of glorious in his eyes. he looked at her with complete adoration, thinking that her personality and her adorable smile were something to die for.
he never hesitated to comfort her when thoughts flooded her mind. he always checked up on her, bringing her anything she might need and staying with her. he reassures her every day, making her feel at peace. if it weren’t for steven, she would’ve just wallowed in whatever anyone else said.
the whole group of confused about why people would say that to her. she’s so pretty, and she always has been. there’s no room in people’s lives to judge other people, but somehow they want to make her feel bad.
they invited y/n out to the boardwalk, preparing to tease her and steven the whole time. y/n was excited. she loves spending time with steven and that whole group makes her feel whole. she only feels accepted. steven had said he wanted to come over and see her early today, so he drove over as she was getting ready.
she wanted to feel pretty. she put her favorite outfit on, and did her hair in a luscious style. the first glance in the mirror wasn’t as painful as the stares that followed. her eyes wandered down to her legs, and up the rest of her body. she tried to conceal anything she could, but she was taken out of her attempt when a few light knocks appeared on the door.
“hey, your mom let me in,” steven says, a light grin on his face. he can tell what y/n was doing, standing in front of the full body mirror with a stiff stance. he always hated when he saw her trying to cover up, he wants to be able to love every part of y/n that he can.
“hi,” y/n replies, softly. “i’ll be ready in a minute.”
“you look ready, and you look perfect,” he tells her, a weave of confusion through his voice.
“i was going to change the shirt, i really liked this one but now i’m not sure,” y/n sighs, gazing back at herself. steven grabs her shoulders lightly, turning her to face him.
“listen to me,” he says. “you look absolutely gorgeous in that. you don’t have to change for anyone. i wish you could see your beauty through my eyes.”
y/n smiles, knowing that steven isn’t lying one bit. he’s truthful, and she knows he loves her. she steps out of the view of the mirror, adjusting her new shirt a bit more before leaving with him. she feels safe when he’s near, and the harsh doubt in her mind subsides to a slight.
when she gets out of the car in the parking lot, she meets up with her friends who run to greet her. belly jogs up, taking y/n in her arms and looking at her fine jewelry.
“this is so cute!” she squeals, running a soft finger on it.
“thanks, belly!” y/n laughs, spotting taylor running over. taylor and belly together always look perfect, guys look at them walking together, they compliment each other perfectly. she used to feel like a shadow with them, but they only accepted her.
“is that the new shirt you bought the other day at that boutique?” taylor asks, pointing at the new article. “you look the hottest, y/n, i swear.”
“taylor, come on-“
“no! doesn’t she look hot guys?” taylor questions, turning to face steven who was talking with the fisher brothers.
“when doesn’t she?” steven asks, smirking at y/n before turning around.
“uh, yeah! you look great, y/n,” jeremiah adds, along with a compliment from conrad. steven playfully shoots them a death stare, basically saying ‘back off’.
y/n laughs, spending the day with her friends knowing that they love her, and she feels pretty in her own skin with them.

Tumblr media
The sun sets low, casting a warm glow upon the unfamiliar garden. The air is thick with the hum of laughter and music that drifts from the house, and everything seems perfect. It should be perfect. This is the stuff summer dreams are made of, and yet, you’re sitting on the outdoor furniture, alone, and left to your own devices.
Summer so far has been nothing but longing. You had watched as the one boy who had captured your heart at ten spent days at the beach with girls you didn’t even know the names of. And sure, it’s not like you have anything, not even close. But could you blame yourself? Jeremiah was nothing but perfect Carolina-blue eyes and golden skin. He was your summer dream.
The house party was meant to be a distraction, that’s what Steven had said when he tugged you into his car. It’ll be fun, you need to stop being sad all summer. He was nothing but adamant to make this summer the best yet, especially with the overhanging weight that Conrad and himself would be moving to college next year. Steven had never been fond of change, especially not when it came to summers at Cousins.
Steven had long since abandoned you to dance the night away with pretty girls and hooting boys, so instead here you are, sitting alone at a party, trying to fill the Jeremiah-shaped cavity in your heart with fruity drinks and loud music.
Jeremiah hadn’t been in sight when you first arrived at the party, and maybe that was a good thing. You could enjoy yourself for once, without your wandering eyes finding him somewhere with his hand on a girl's waist. Even just the thought of it made you sick to your stomach.
But sometime between then and now, he had shown up. Figures. And now you watch as he makes his way out of the big back doors, down the patio steps, past the pool, until he’s sitting with you in the makeshift gazebo, fairy lights sparkling above.
“Hey trouble,” Jeremiah greets as he sits on the plush outdoor sofa next to you, sidled up close enough that he bumps his shoulder with yours in welcome.
“Hey,” you parrot back, not meaning for the obvious buzzkill tone in your voice.
“What’s got you all bummed out?”
“Dunno.” you reply, eyeing the cold drink you’re balancing on your thigh which leaves a cold ring of condensation on your bare skin. “Did Steven send you to get me?”
Jeremiah’s eyebrows draw together in confusion as he cocks his head to the side. “No? Why would he need to? Can I not check up on my favourite girl?”
You let out a bemused snort, running your finger around the brim of your glass, eyes still not meeting his. Maybe you have had too much to drink.
“Come dance with me,” he says instead, hand outstretched, waiting for yours. You let your head fall against the back of the sofa.
“Not in a dancing mood.”
You don’t know if it’s the drinks or if it’s real, but Jeremiah shakes his head, a soft smile gracing his features as he tucks the stray strands of hair that have fallen in front of your face behind your ear. His hand lingers there a few seconds too long.
“What happened to dancing the summer away?” He questions, and when you finally look up to meet his eyes, he’s much closer than you expected.
“I was fifteen when I said that,” you note, which was almost two years ago now. How does he remember these things?
Jeremiah doesn’t respond immediately so you take your eyes off him, instead you watch the house glow to life, light filling the windows as the dark night begins to blanket the sky. The garden itself is empty with most of the party opting to escape the summer heat by seeking shelter indoors. A few girls are busy by the poolside, and you notice one of them keeps diverting her gaze back to where you and Jeremiah are sitting. Typical.  It was like every girl in Cousins was obsessed with the prospect of at least one of the Fisher boys taking fancy in them. Was it bad that it always made you jealous? Everyone who sees him, wants him, and you wish you could keep him as just yours.
“You have an admirer,” you point out, nodding to the girl by the pool. You must admit, she’s gorgeous. Pretty brown eyes and gorgeous hair that even when wet seems to frame her face perfectly. You slink further down in your seat.
Jeremiah simply rolls his eyes at you. “Well she is pretty.”
And you know he means it as a joke. Can tell by the stupid grin and the tone of his voice. But the words are still like a dagger to your heart, twisting and turning until you can barely breathe - and oh God, you need to get out of here and away from him.
You set the drink down by the sofa, it meets the wooden deck with a too-loud clink before you stand abruptly. You brush down the skirt that had ridden up your legs as the ring of water on your thigh left behind by the glass soaks the edges of it. “I need to go,” is all you can murmur out.
“No, wait-” Jeremiah begins, standing to follow you.
“It’s fine,” you push, faux niceties lacing your voice, smiling as much as the ache in your chest will let you. You can feel the frown on his face burn into your back as you turn to leave, but you choose to ignore it, instead making your way back into the large lively house.
As you pass the pool though, the girl who has been eyeing Jeremiah gets up with a giddy look on her face, she calls to him in a sweet honeyed voice and it makes you sick.
You climb the patio steps, making your way through the lavish interior of the house.
You push through the crowd of people within the house. You just need a moment to yourself, to gather your thoughts and figure out just what the fuck was going on with you. Carefully, you slip into the bathroom, pushing the door shut with the weight of your body before leaning against the sink. You take deep breaths, trying to calm the beating of your heart.
All summer, you had been in some strange sad limbo, and you had blamed Jeremiah for that. For all the girls he had kissed at every party, for the way he made your heart beat and palms grow clammy. But really, was it his fault when you were the one who pushed him away?
Being in love with Jeremiah Fisher was anything but easy, not when you had to dance around the intricate friendship that had blossomed since you were eight years old. You didn’t know what love was until you were fifteen, sitting on the pier with him as you skidded rocks across the ocean. When he had smiled that smile and his eyes sparkled like the entire cosmos was within them. From that very moment on, you were doomed. Every brush of his hand against yours felt like a calculated step, and it was your fault for deluding yourself into believing he had space in his heart for anything more than a friendship with you.
It’s only a million times worse when you’re as close with him as you are, casual flirting and lingering touches was nothing but the norm. So it was especially difficult when he’d grab your hand and lead you through a crowd, or whisper some stupid inside joke just for you in a crowded room, when such a simple touch set your body alight with sparks.
“Knock knock,” you hear the door open softly, Steven’s head poking through. You had forgotten to lock the door, you realise. “Jeremiah thinks you're mad at him.” He informs, voice careful and soft as he closes the door behind him, making his way to you and placing a comforting hand on your shoulder.
You shake your head, unable to find the words to express the turmoil within yourself. Instead, you offer a weak smile letting out a shaky exhale. “Well, I’m not.”
Steven looks amused as he leans with his back against the sink next to you, tilting his head so it falls into your field of vision. “You sure?”
“Very sure.” You confirm.
“I think you’re lying.”
You take another breath, “I’m not mad, i’m just…” your voice trails off as you try to find the words.
“Angry, confused, sad?” Steven offers.
You shake your head as you poke his shoulder, “would you let me speak?”
“Yes ma’am, sorry ma’am,” he throws his hands up in surrender.
“I’m just… tired,” you say, defeated. Steven gives you an apologetic look. He’s known about your not-so-little crush on Jeremiah. How could he not when he seemed to be the only person who could light you up when you were dim and down?
“I’m tired of having to watch him go out with other girls every other day. I mean it’s not like we’re exclusive - we’re definitely not - but I just wish I didn’t feel like throwing up everytime.”
For a second, Steven doesn’t say anything, he looks at you with those eyes he does when he’s thinking. “What’s that thing Susannah always says?”
“What?”
“About…” He blows out his bottom lip as he struggles to remember the words, “about how love is like a flower, it needs time to grow and blossom and you need to nurture it.”
You pause, before cracking a smile. “Never in a million years would I have even imagined you quoting one of Susannah’s cheesy pieces of romance advice.”
Steven rolls his eyes at you, but he can’t help the smile that creeps up on him too. “Look, the point is, love isn’t supposed to be easy. Like, at all. But you really like Jeremiah, and I get it, he can really suck sometimes, especially with the whole hooking up thing,” - he looks up at you as he finishes his sentence, - “but if you love him as much as you let on, you’ve gotta just go for it. You need to stop pushing him away because of your irrational fear.”
Shaking your head, you turn fully to face Steven, crossing your arms defensively across your chest. “Okay, it’s not irrational, it’s completely rational. What if I just end up ruining everything? That’s a super real possibility. I don’t want to lose Jeremiah as a friend, and the risk of running that possibility is way too high.”
“God,” Steven lets out through a sigh, he looks like he wants to strangle you. “Listen to yourself! Maybe if you haven’t been moping around all summer you’d be able to see it.”
“See what?”
“Just go out there and talk to the boy.”
“This’d be a lot easier if you just told me.”
“I think you’d appreciate me a lot more if you figured it out for yourself.” Steven tells you, and he says it in a way that leaves little room to bicker back. He gives you an encouraging nod and a soft smile and for a minute you think he’ll say another stupid thing like go get ‘em tiger! But he graces you with silence and leaves you alone in the small bathroom.
You look back at yourself in the mirror. Maybe Steven is right.
‧₊˚☆༉‧₊˚.
Jeremiah is sitting on the steps of the patio when he hears the sliding glass doors open and shut and the shuffle of Steven’s old sneakers. Immediately, his head swivels so he’s facing his long-time best friend. “So what’d she say? Is she mad?” He blurts out immediately.
“Woah, slow down lover-boy,” Steven says, amusement in his tone. He takes a seat next to Jeremiah, placing his hands either side of himself. “Well, she’s not happy.”
“What the fuck, bro,” Jeremiah grumbles, “you were meant to deescalate the situation.”
“Actually no, I was checking up on my friend, who I care about, and who I haven’t been dancing around all summer long.” Steven corrects.
Jeremiah looks away, unamused, “okay I get it. I haven’t been the best person to her lately.”
“Really?” Steven gasps, faux surprise lacing his tone, “You’ve been avoiding her like the plague and hanging around with random girls like you want her to be upset.”
“I don’t!” Jeremiah is quick to retort. “I’m just…”
“You’re just being a dick.”
“That’s not fair-”
“Look man, I’m not trying to upset you either, but I really don’t get why you’re so scared to confront your feelings. You like her, you like her a lot and it’s so fuckin’ obvious.”
Jeremiah opens his mouth, ready to argue back, but Steven leaves no room for it.
“She literally craves your attention and you’re out here, making out with other girls like she’s not right there. Is this some weird attention grab sort of thing? What, are you trying to make her jealous? This isn’t like you, Jere.”
Steven’s words cut deep. So deep Jeremiah thinks they’ve scarred him, but maybe it’s for the best. No, it’s definitely for the best.
“Think about it,” is the last thing Steven says, before he stands up, giving Jeremiah a reassuring pat on the back, and disappears into the crowd of party-goers within the house.
‧₊˚☆༉‧₊˚.
When you finally feel ready enough to leave the bathroom, you think for a moment about Steven’s words. They kick around in your head. You chuckle to yourself, who knew you’d ever be taking legitimate advice from Steven? But instead of confronting your problems like you should, you pour yourself another drink, turning on your heels as you ascend the glossy white stairs. Whoever’s house this is - in the words of Steven himself - they’re fucking loaded.
The upstairs of the house is empty, albeit a few straggling couples making out in the hallway. You ignore them, noticing the gorgeous open balcony that conjoins to the hallway you’re currently walking down. It’s quiet and empty, a perfect place to spend the rest of the night in peace.
The moon hangs low in the sky now, reflecting off the ocean ahead, and as you step out onto the balcony the cool Summer night’s air bites at your skin.
It's a glorious view for what should’ve been a perfect night. Laughter and music wafts up from the party below, and you let out another regretful sigh, your heart heavy with the weight of unspoken words. As your eyes linger on the ocean, you hear the sound of approaching footsteps. You turn to see Jeremiah standing beside you, and when you look at him, he gives you that sweet smile.
“Hey trouble,” he begins, “you alright?”
You shrug, turning your back to the balcony as you slide your back down the railing, slumping to the floor with your knees tucked under your chin. “Trying to be.”
“Wanna tell me what’s wrong?”
Jeremiah with such a soft voice felt unnatural, and a part of you felt guilty for rendering him so quiet. Silence stretches between both of you like a chasm, as you struggle to find the right words within you to tell him how you truly felt. Instead, Jeremiah fills the silence, his voice hesitant but filled with a quiet determination. “I’m sorry.”
You gave him a perplexed look, “what are you apologising for?”
“For this entire summer,” he says, sitting on the ground next to you as he takes the cool glass from your hands, fingers brushing yours, before he places it on the ground. You tilt your head, curiosity in your eyes as you wait for him to continue.
“I’ve been an asshole. Like, bigtime, and I'm really sorry.” He takes a deep breath, takes your hand in his carefully, softly, like you’re something to be worshipped. To him you are. “And, I… need to tell you something.”
You look up at him, heart racing with anticipation, “what is it?” you all but murmur.
He takes a deep breath, his eyes never leaving yours. “I just-” and when he can’t find the right words, because how is he meant to compress everything he’s ever felt for you into one sentence? It’s impossible. He instead uses his actions.
His hands untangle from yours, grabbing the sides of your face before pulling you into a kiss. He kisses you. He kisses you and the world falls away and there’s nothing but him. At first, you don’t know what to do, it’s all so sudden, but when it finally registers, you want to cry. Not sad tears, and not entirely tears of joy either, tears of relief, tears that carry the weight of all your longing.
When he finally pulls away you’re quick to pull him back, holding him as close as humanly possible as you kiss him with all the fervour you can muster, hoping and praying he can taste the apology on your lips. But when it gets too much, and you need air, you pull away again. He looks at you, and you hold onto the fabric of his shirt tighter because this all feels like a dream.
“She isn’t you.” He murmurs, soft enough it could be carried away by the summer breeze.
“What?” you whisper back, as to not break the sacred quietness.
“She's. Not. You. None of them are, none of them could even dream of being you. They’re not funny like you, not gorgeous like you. They don’t know me like you do - Shit, I sound like a sap.”
You chuckle, “no, please do continue.”
He shoots you that heartstopping grin. “Oh, so you do like it when I flatter you?”
“Love it,” you answer, mirroring his grin.
His features soften for a second, and again, the apologies cascade from his lips. “I’m sorry, for being such an asshole. You deserve so much better than me, I’ve been the worst, and I didn’t mean to make you upset or jealous, I was just… nervous. God, you make me so nervous I do the dumbest shit.”
“I make you nervous?” You can’t help the disbelief in your voice.
“Like you wouldn’t believe.” He says, nothing but sincere. He smiles then, and that makes all of it worthwhile.
You don’t know for how long you manage to get lost in him, but when your thoughts begin to wander, you let the thoughts flow freely from your lips. “Remember when we were ten,” you say, recounting the memory that started this all, “we had snuck out to the beach. We got home so late that night, and we tried to sneak back in, but of course that never works with Susannah. She had said something like-”
“No more sneaking out for the both of you,” Jeremiah continues, “she said we’d had too much fun.”
“But we did it anyway.” You finish, dumbfounded that he remembers that at all. “How do you remember all these things?”
“Because it’s you.” He says it like it’s obvious by now. His pretty blue eyes don’t leave yours for even a second. “I don’t think I’ve loved anyone the way I love you.”
You look at him with that stellar smile he loves so much, but before he can speak, you’re interrupted by the familiar presence of the boy who played cupid.
Steven shakes his head, clear amusement in his eyes. "Finally,” he breathes out, as if it pained him to see the both of you dance around each other all summer. It probably did. His hands are wrapped around a cool glass, it’s empty. “I think this has been quite a night.”
You nod, blissful, turning to meet Jeremiah’s blue eyes. They speak volumes in themselves, a deep ocean blue that sparkles with some form of admiration, you can’t quite figure it out. “Let’s get outta here,” he says, pushing himself off the balcony floor as he extends a hand for you to take, which you do.
Maybe, this summer could be perfect after all.

Heyy girlie, can I have a Conrad Fisher x Fem!reader where reader is bellys best friend, come down for the summer and ends up secretly hooking up with conrad here and there. They agreed to no strings attached but maybe Connie couldn't help but fall in love? Xoxo ❤️
Guy falls first trope my beloved
A little more - Conrad Fisher
Warnings; sexual innuendos, language, mentions of underage drinking.

Conrad hadn't intended for this to happen. His relationship with you was supposed to be no strings attached, simply business and pleasure, but somehow in the process of it all, Conrad had gone mad.
He thought of you, outside of the nights you spent together and the sheets you would tangle yourselves in. He imagined himself with you free from the sneaking around and the hook-ups.
You were Belly's best friend, and earlier in the year after getting intoxicated beyond measure you and Conrad had spent the night together. It was meant to be a one-time thing. One night of your skin against his, Conrad's lips on yours. Somehow in the mix of it all, you and Conrad had made a deal. Sex, no strings attached, no feelings involved, and nobody should know. At the time Conrad was okay with that, nights spent with you when he needed some relief, but somewhere along the line, Conrad had begun needing and wanting you as more than just a body to hold in the darkness.
Soon, summer would be over, and everyone would leave cousins behind until the next year, and that meant Conrad had a limited time with you. There was no telling if Belly would bring you back with her next year, either. Maybe bringing her best friend along was a one-time thing. Perhaps Conrad ran the risk of never seeing you again outside of occasions such as Belly's birthday parties. He hated to think about that, but what he found worse was that you probably didn't care about such a thing. As far as Conrad knew you were oblivious to his feelings for you, how they had grown over the nights you spent with him.
"Earth to Conrad!" It's Jeremiah, waving from across the kitchen. "Dude, get your ass moving, Belly and Y/N are back."
The sound of your name gets Conrad up, and he jumps down from the counter where he was sitting. When he makes it to the driveway, you and Belly are struggling with far too many grocery bags.
"You said you were just gonna get a couple of things, not hundreds." Conrad takes the bags from you, trying his best not to smile too broadly. If he does it might just reveal to the others how much time you and Conrad have really spent together. It might also let you see behind the curtain of his feelings, he's not sure he's ready to tell you how he feels yet.
"We got carried away." You look to Belly with a grin, Jeremiah laughing as he takes the rest of the bags
"We can see that."
It almost stops Conrad's heart when you push past him, shoulder brushing against his as you lift bottles of chocolate milk and juice up in your arms. He can't comprehend whether the contact was made on purpose or not, and he follows close behind as you wander into the house.
You head straight to the fridge to put the beverages away, Conrad dumping the bags he holds onto the counter with Jeremiah close behind. Conrad wants so badly to talk to you at that moment, and he hates himself for thinking about some kind of domestic lifestyle with you. It's been one summer after all, and somehow in the short time Conrad was blessed with your presence, such strong feelings have arisen.
He clears his throat before he can stop himself, and you turn, the refrigerator door falling shut as you do. Jeremiah eyes him closely too, and he knows then that he can't do this. Not now, not here. It's not fair of him to put you on the spot in front of Jeremiah and Belly. If he's going to confess how he feels, which Conrad is still not sure he can do, he's going to do it privately where he can gauge your genuine reaction. No outside components involved. So, Conrad walks away, acting as though he had never intended to say anything at all.
-
Conrad had spent more than enough time thinking about how he would broach the subject of his feelings to you, and in the end, he felt there was no possible way he could plan for it. You sat beside the pool with Belly, laughing with your feet in the water, and as much as Conrad knew you would hate him for it, he called out your name. When you looked up, the shock of it was all over your face.
"Can I talk to you for a sec?" Conrad speaks again, taking note of the way Belly glances between the two of you as if you are a foreign species about to do a peculiar dance.
You stand, slowly, and make your way to him, Conrad moving inside and away from the curious ears of Belly Conklin.
"I want to talk about us." He's careful with his words, and they feel foreign on his tongue. Us, as in you and Conrad together. It feels odd to say.
"What about us?" You look around as you say it, arms folding over your chest in discomfort. He hates to make you feel that way, but he can't keep hiding how he feels, not when summers almost gone.
"I want us to be something." It's a weird way to put it, but it's all Conrad can think of to say. "Something more than whatever the fuck we've been doing." He finds himself reaching for you, pulling your arms away from your chest so he can take your hands in his own. "I know we said no strings attached, but I fucking like you—a lot."
You can't seem to meet his eyes, dodging his gaze expertly as he gives your hands a gentle squeeze. He wanted your honest reaction, and he guesses this is it, though it's not the one he wanted. "Y/N, please look at me." He stares you down, and when you finally lock your eyes with his, he doesn't know what to think. You seem scared, and Conrad worries he might be the source of your fears.
"Belly is my best friend Conrad, this can't happen, even if I wanted it to."
"So you admit, you want more than what we have?" It sounds harsh when the words leave him, and Conrad doesn't intend it to be that way. He's just desperate, for you.
"Conrad," His name from your lips would be soothing, if not for the situation. He still holds your hands in his own, and he intertwines your fingers with his, hoping that it might mean something to you, and get you to change your mind. All you do is shake your head and he curses his bad luck that the one person he needs, he can't have.
"Y/N, please. Just give me one shot, give us one shot." He's pulled you just that little bit closer, a risky move considering anyone could walk in and catch you any second. He does it anyway, and you don't stop him. That's enough for him to lean in further, and then he waits. He's so close to you that the tip of his nose brushes against yours and the anticipation of his lips so close drives him crazy. When you close the gap he knows you feel the same. Even if he can't be with you, even if Belly and the others hold you back, he knows you have something.
"Don't make me wait till next summer." He whispers the words with his forehead pressed to yours when your lips break apart, looking down at his hands holding yours. He's in love, but he doesn't know when it happened, or how.
"There's no guarantee Belly will want me to come with her next year Con." It's a harsh truth that has to be spoken. There's no way Belly would let you come with her again next year if she knew what you and Conrad had been doing all summer. Maybe he could invite you back himself, but that wouldn't be fair on you or Belly. The only person that would be happy with the arrangement would be Conrad, and was he really that selfish?
"You have to leave in a week." The words are so quiet because even Conrad himself doesn't want to hear them. He says them anyway, hands moving up to hold your wrists. His grasp is gentle, but he can feel your pulse through his fingers and it reminds him just how real you are. He'd done that a lot over the last couple of weeks, and every time it hit him like a shockwave, a reminder that everything you had was reality and not just some distant dream.
"Do you want us to be more? Don't think about anyone else, just give me a yes or no." His eyes are pleading, and he knows it's unfair on you but he needs the answer. He needs to know.
"I really like you, Conrad," You bring a hand up to touch the side of his face, so gently that the touch is hardly registered against his skin. "But you know we can't."
"That's not an answer." He's determined and with each second that passes, that desperate feeling grows inside him, a weed that he can't remove from the garden.
You let out a sigh, shifting your gaze to the floor beside you, "We agreed on this being a no-strings-attached type of deal, and I hate that I'm attached to you now, but that's the rule, Conrad. That's the promise we made."
"I don't care about that promise." He's dead serious and when you turn to look at him again, he knows you are too. You shake your head, moving away from him.
"We can't."
-
A few days pass and Conrad knows your avoiding him. The days go by slowly, you don't answer his texts, and he hardly sees you around the beach house. You're around of course, and you act as though everything is fine so as to not draw attention to your sudden distaste for Conrad's presence, but you work hard to keep appearances where he may be to a minimum. Conrad called you a few times late at night too, hoping if anything to go back to the way things were before he confessed just so he could spend some time with you. You didn't pick up.
"Hey, where's Y/N?" it's the day before you leave Cousins, and Conrad can't help but ask Belly where you may be. He needs to talk to you, make sure everything is okay before you leave him and the beach house behind.
Belly's expression is one of confusion when she looks to him, a frown gracing her forehead as she shovels cereal through her lips. "What is it with you and her, something's going on."
Conrad can only shrug, wondering what you would do if he blew your cover. If he did maybe it would be easier to have a conversation with you, even if you were yelling at him, at least he would have you talking. But he doesn't want to hurt you and outing your little arrangement over the last month might just do that.
"I just want to know where she is Belly."
It's as if you know what he's doing because in the next moment his phone dings, and as he stares down at the screen it's your name that reflects against his eyes. He dashes out the door as soon as he sees it, ignoring Belly's concerned calls after him as he races to the sand dunes. When he gets there, you're waiting for him, knees hugged to your chest.
"You got my text." You look up when he's right beside you, and he lets out an exasperated laugh.
"It doesn't seem like you got many of mine." It's a dig at the way you'd been avoiding him and Conrad knows it's risky to say, but he does so anyway. He is a little annoyed with you after all.
"I'm sorry, I needed time to think." You shuffle over in the sand, an invitation for him to sit with you. He takes it gratefully, settling down at your side.
"You're leaving soon." His voice is quiet, and he waits. You say nothing, instead opting to rest your head on his shoulder, the silence enveloping you both. It's enough though, a gesture that tells Conrad just how much you'll miss him when summer is over. He rests his head over yours, and you wait together for your summer to reach its end.
-
On the final day, Conrad is at his limit. Watching you pack your things is almost too much for him, even though he knew it was coming. You'd said goodbye to him privately earlier in the day, a kiss or two exchanged, but Conrad hated it. It felt too final like he would never be seeing you again, and he refused to see that as a fact.
Now, you stand by the car, hugging Susannah goodbye. His mother strokes your hair lovingly, muttering something to you that he can't hear, and he can't believe summer is over. His summer with you, perhaps the only one he will get, is over. You're heading toward the car when he makes his decision, and the way his legs carry him over to you is almost abnormal. It's almost as though he has no control over his own body, his mind consumed with the thought of you, making his limps force their way to your figure.
"Y/N, wait." Your name falls from his lips smooth, his tongue so used to saying the word. You turn fast as if you'd been waiting for him. He hopes you were.
Conrad is selfish. He wants to be selfish and he's made his decision about that. He's willing to live with it, because, in the next moment, he's kissing you, bringing you into him in front of his family and friends, and making a statement that is full of risk and passion. But the best part is, he doesn't care how they'll react. Kissing you makes him feel alive as if he's a decent human being worthy of something, and if this is the last time he gets to feel that way, so be it. So he kisses you, and you kiss him back, that being a type of relief no drug can provide. He doesn't know what will happen when he pulls away, when your lips part from his, but for now, he doesn't want to find out. He's willing to stay in this moment as long as he can and deal with the rest of it later because what he has with you is complicated, but it sure is worth it.

Life Jacket - Chapter 1
Conrad Fisher x Eldest Conklin Sibling Reader
I just wrote this so quickly cause it was sitting in my head and it had to get out. Go read this post for an idea of what this series will be! I'm very excited about it!
Here's Part One!!!
Word Count; 1.2K
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cousins. Lots of mixed emotions came with going to Cousins. I loved it I really did, but I wasn’t blessed with the privilege of experiencing the blissful, worry-free love like my sister. Things still followed me to Cousins, responsibilities. And I always was stuck wishing they didn’t.
My siblings got to go swimming whenever they wanted, I had to swim once a day to “keep up with it” in my parents' words, mainly my Dad. I know they don't mean it. That in their hearts they do it out of love. Cause I do love swimming, I really do, but sometimes I wish reality could go on pause so I could live freely for a little while. With no concerns, or right way or wrong way, just me doing as I please. Without my Dad here the past two summers it helped. He’s harder on me than Mom. I grew up to realize it was just cause he didn’t really know how to be a parent. Does anyone really?  But his way of showing me love as a parent was by promising my success and ensuring my future. Well, I got recruited to Harvard's swim program with a scholarship so I guess his way of love kind of worked.
Despite everything, Cousins meant I got to see them. Susannah, Jeremiah, and him. Conrad. He was what stirred my emotions about Cousins the most. I’d had a crush on him for as long as I could remember. But I couldn’t tell him. I couldn’t jeopardize our families like that.  I didn’t have time for boys. I had tried to date here and there, but everyone got bored, or mad that I “didn’t have enough time for them”. I couldn’t even get upset because they were right. I didn’t have time for them like normal high school girls did. I couldn’t hang out after school, I had swim practice and very few high school boys wanted to hang out just to do homework together once I got home if you know what I mean. I couldn't afford to be distracted, so I let them all go. I couldn’t do that to Conrad, put him in that situation. I also think I couldn’t do it to myself. The other boys didn’t matter, but him? Losing him would crush me so hard that I don’t think I would recover.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I drove to Cousins with Steven in my car.  I had saved up all summer and bought my trusty Volkswagen Passat last Fall. That was another pro about Cousins, the money. I've worked as a lifeguard at the club since I was 15, and I also did swim lessons there as well as private lessons. Those people will pay real well to have an all-star swimmer teach their three-year-old how to float I’ll tell ya.
“So you excited to work this summer?” I asked Steven. He got a job at the pool snack stand at the club and I had helped Jeremiah get a position as a lifeguard.
“Yeah, I guess, I’m excited to make big bucks like you have been all these summers.” He smiled at me making me instantly light up. Steven just had a natural energy to him that brightened people's moods.
We jammed out to music for the rest of the drive and before I knew it we were pulling in the driveway. I noticed my mom's car wasn’t here yet. Knowing her and Belly, they probably stopped for snacks. Man, this house. I dreamed about this house. It was absolutely beautiful. I honked, our signal to them we had arrived.
Jeremiah was the first one to run out to see us, but Susannah was not far behind. Conrad was nowhere to be seen, odd. I didn't have time to think about it though as Jere scooped me up in a big hug and spun me around. I noticed then how much he had grown since last summer. He probably started working out and he definitely grew a couple of inches. As we said hello he had a huge smile on his face, he usually did Jere was always a golden retriever in human form.
Then Susannah came up to me. when Susannah hugged me it was like life went on pause, the way I always wanted it to. In her arms I was safe, in her arms I was still just her baby, the first born girl.
“ Wow Y/N look at you, my precious girl, you've bloomed," Susannah said to me as she held the sides of my face. I never doubted a word Susannah said, the way she said things made me believe them. Susannah never said it and neither did I, but we were each other's favorites. She always spoiled me, she always was my number one fan. Susannah had a level of enthusiasm to her that most people didn't have. It probably wasn't fair for me to call her my favorite. She got to love me like a mother and spoil me like the fun aunt, and she never had to give me any of the negatives. So yes it probably wasn't fair for her to be my favorite, which is why I only ever told her private.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We all walked back inside, Susannah and Jere helping Steven and me carry in our bags. Still no Conrad. I dropped my bags on the floor as I scanned my eyes around my room. Nothing out of place, everything was as I left it. I really do love this room. It was bigger than my one back home, it even had a small walk-in closet.  Conrad and I had the biggest rooms, we were the oldest so we got the first pick of rooms.
I'm mindlessly unpacked for a while before hearing the same signal I had done myself just a bit earlier, Mom and Belly were here. I didn't rush down after all, I had seen them just a few hours ago. I thought it was okay to let them have their own proper reunion with the Fishers. So I finished putting the rest of my clothes in my drawers before I went downstairs. However, when I open my bedroom door, I open it to find Conrad with his hand in mid-air as if he were about to knock.
“Whoa- oh, hi,” I said somewhat skeptically, he had just appeared out of nowhere, where had he been when I would got here? He cleared his throat, shuffling his feet somewhat awkwardly as he put his arm down from its spot in the air and clasped his hands behind his back.
“Hey, um I was uh coming to say hello!  I was down at the beach surfing all morning, I didn't even realize you were here until your mom pulled up and you weren't with her.” He seemed nervous for some reason, I wasn't sure why.
“Don't worry about it, was the surf any good?”
He smiled at me then, “ Yeah it was so good, I lost track of time.” I smile back at him, I had missed him.
“Glad to know you missed my entrance for something worthwhile.” He laughed, me along with him before his face went back to being relaxed. He stared at me in silence for a few moments before suddenly, before I could even realize what was happening, Conrad had his arms around me. Conrad was hugging me. It was nice, but odd. Conrad wasn't the most affectionate person and this was very out of the blue.
“I'm happy you're here Y/N.” He whispered, slightly muffled by my hair. We backed away as I said,
“Me too.”  The silence stretched a moment too long for my level of comfort. He was too intoxicating, his gaze on me was all consuming, I had to get out of there. “I'm going to go say hi to my mom and my sister.” I rushed out, going past him down the stairs before he even replied.
This summer was already off to an interesting start.
Y/n’s Pov
"God why is it so hot!" Taylor complained -- holding her hair up, fanning herself with her hands. "Well, Aunt Julia said that the AC is broken" Belly said walking in the kitchen.
"What? No fucking way!" Steven groaned. Aunt Julia walked inside the kitchen "Alright, today's open house is cancelled. I need you all out of the house before the AC guy gets here." Aunt Julia said — we all looked at each other, smiling.
"Great, let's go to the beach! We could go surf and all of that" Jeremiah suggested, I looked at him and nodded. "You guys should go.” Conrad said patting me. I looked up at him “What? what about you?” I asked him.
“I'm not leaving the house" Conrad said, shaking his head no. "Oh come one Conrad!” Jeremiah pushed, "I mean we can go to the mall, they have good ac" Taylor suggested - still using her hands to fan herself.
Conrad still shook his head no "Cool, have fun. But I didn't ditch finals just to leave this house-" — "Conrad, I am trying to keep my shit together" Aunt Julia said cutting Conrad off, placing the papers down on the table "You already ruined my day and I would at least appreciate it that you guys get out of my hair for a few hours." Aunt Julia continued — she was pissed.
Conrad was about to say something else but I grabbed his shoulder gently, calming him down not wanting him to say anything that'll ruin everyone's mood "You know, we can go to the boardwalk" Belly said, I looked at her and nodded. I looked back up at Conrad nodding at him. Everyone agreed.
I watched Skye sit down infront of Aunt Julia "Hey you should come with us, Skye" I suggested looking at them — smiling. "Oh uhm sounds very state fair plus I should just stay here with my mom.. right?" they said - turning to Aunt Julia for confirmation. Aunt Julia shook her head no.
"It wasn't my favorite but you should go" Aunt Julia smiled gently. Skye nodded "I guess I'm coming with you guys" they said with a smile — standing up, walking towards us.
"Great! let's go?" I asked all of them, they all agreed and started to walk towards the door. I felt an arm around my shoulder, "Thank you, Y/N" Conrad said, I looked up at him and nodded "Of course, Connie" I said putting an arm around his waist before walking towards the door.
TIME SKIP
We were now here at boardwalk, we all decided to buy some ice cream first just to cool off.
"I promise you'll have fun, Skye" I heard Belly say to Skye — trying to convince them somehow. Jeremiah scoffed "Fun? The last time we went here you were crying" he said teasing Belly.
"Hey I remember that! Susannah had to throw your clothes away after" I said, pointing at Belly — chuckling at her. "Hey! you were crying too" Conrad said, poking my arm. I shook my head no “Nuh uh! I wasn’t!” pushing him a little.
"You know, Susannah used to force my mom to go here when they were kids. My mom hated it but Susannah loved it" Skye said. Conrad looked at her before saying “You know what my mom also loves?" he paused "The beach house"
I went beside him and grabbed his shoulder gently "Connie" I whispered. "My mom's not evil, Conrad" Skye paused "And your mom wasn't a saint" Skye continued — raising her brows before going back to eating their ice cream. We all stopped walking, looking at Skye.
I sighed, "Skye, have you ever played shoot your shot?" Belly asked Skye, breaking the tension. "No, I think I'll keep it that way" Skye said, looking down — shaking their head.
"Omg you need to see us beat Conrad's ass" I chuckled — shrugging my shoulders, looking at Conrad who was already furrowing his brows at me. "You can never do that" Conrad said smirking. I squinted my eyes at him, "Oh really?" I teased more, “Yes” he hummed — looking at me before eating his ice cream.
"Oh come on you guys, not another great boardwalk showdown" Steven complained — poking my side. I pushed his hand away, slapping it “Stop!”
“So basically they have this thing where whenever they go here they would try to beat each other in shoot your shot” Taylor said. “Yeah every year, not until they got so competitive that my mom banned them from playing” Steven said chuckling — Conrad chuckled too, agreeing with Steven. “So is everyone in?” I asked — looking around. All of them agreed except for Skye.
“Uhm.. I should probably head out” Skye said, their voice quiet, “No you should stay” Conrad paused clearing his throat “It’s fun” I nodded at Skye. “You’re in our team now” I said, patting Skye — smiling.
“Okay, just so you know, I dont do high fives or trash talking” Skye infromed us — Belly nodded “Deal” Skye nodded back before asking “So what’s the prize?”
“Well the loser has to buy the winner the biggest bag of candy” Jeremiah said “Candy? can’t we have something that is a little more sexier?” Taylor suggested — shrugging her shoulder.
“You know, we can talk about the prizes later” I said raising my shoulders — looking at everyone. Conrad clapped “Alright! Let’s go?” he said before walking towards me putting an arm around my shoulder — I nodded and started to walk towards the arcade.
TIME SKIP
We played a variety of games, such as 'Shoot your shot', 'Go kart', 'Rock Climbing', 'Basketball' and even went to see Cam Cameron, who was with us the entire time. When the competition ended, our team lost. So it was either me or Belly who must ride the Tower of Terror as a punishment.
"Okay, you guys should do rock, paper, and scissors!” Steven suggested — clapping his hands, liking the scene of both of his sisters not liking the thought of riding the Tower of Terror. I looked at Belly — pressing my lips together. Her face filled with fear.
I clapped my hands “You know what! As the older sister, I’ll do it for you” I said winking at Belly before walking towards her — patting her shoulder. I walked towards the gate of the ride, I felt someone grab my shoulder “You know, you don’t need to do it alone right?” It was Conrad, smiling down at me. I looked up at him, confused.
“Come on, Y/N?” he said guiding me. He was going to ride it with me, “Let’s go!” they all yelled — clapping. We went in and got buckled in, I took a deep breathe. I felt Conrad’s hand against mine, I looked at our hands before looking at him. “You’re going to be alright, I’m here” he said — smiling gently before locking his hands with mine.
He was always there for me. When we were kids, he was always there for me, making sure that I did not feel left out. He was always by my side, including me whenever they played games. That's how he was, he never left me alone.
We just held hands the entire time - looking at each other smiling. Afterwards, we went down and high fived with everyone else and decided that it was time to head home.
───────────────────────────
Conrad’s Pov
We we’re now on our way home, I was in Steven’s car. The girls were in Jeremiah’s car. “You know, today was fun” Steven said, smiling. I nodded, agreeing with him “It was fun” I smiled.
Steven shrugged his shoulder, still smiling “I dont know, I haven’t seen you that happy for such a long time”
“Well it did feel good feeling like a little kid again” I paused “And that’s what mom probably wanted, was us to be happy again” I continued. “But today was good” I said nodding — smiling at Steven.
“Okay but I just couldn’t help but notice something between you and Y/N” Steven said — I looked at him confused. “What?” I asked. He went and slapped my shoulder gently “Oh come on! Let’s forget about the Belly thing, she’s my sister too but you know I just noticed that there was a vibe between you and Y/N” He smiled at me, raising his brows teasingly.
My smile couldn't be contained - it was good that it was somehow dark. “What?” Steven chuckled “Just an observation” he said. “Well..” I laughed “I appreciate it” I nodded before looking away from him — still smiling.
TIME SKIP
We were now here infront of the beach house, as we all started to walk towards the door, we heard Jeremiah yell “What the fuck!” so I immediately went and ran inside. I looked and my heart dropped, the house was empty.
There was nothing left, no furniture, no plants, no paintings. All the things that reminded us of mom were gone. We stood there trying to take everything in. Our world has been shattered. I felt someone hug me from behind, it was Y/N, crying, making my heart break even harder.
The worst part of today was returning home to this, everything gone. It broke me, it broke all of us - to see our house, my mom's house, empty. It was like pushing the truth that Mom is really gone.
Inhale. Exhale.
The nerves were flooding in as you waited for your turn to be ‘presented to society’. Being a debutant and actually participating in the stuff you found nonsense at first was the last thing you expected you’d be doing this summer. What you didn’t expect in a million years either, was falling for the one you sworn you hated with every single part of you.
You couldn’t pinpoint the exact moment it began, but it hit you hard when you heard that Belly broke up with Cam. Thoughts of the two of you being together flooded your mind, and though you tried to push them away, they lingered.
Instead of pursuing these thoughts, you distanced yourself from Cam, which turned out to be more difficult than expected since he seemed to be everywhere you were.
Cam was taken aback by your sudden distance. Although you both disliked each other, you never missed the opportunity to bicker. Now, whenever he tried to engage, you either ignored him or replied formally without any insults.
And if Cam had to be honest, it made him feel this pain in his chest. Especially when you started to hangout him with this guy you had met at the bonfire. The same guy you befriended to try to forget Cam. And also the same guy who was your escort to the debutant ball.
Cam tried to come up with reasons for your distance, and one day, he found himself standing in front of your house. Cam wasn’t sure what he was going to say or do, but he was determined to see you. His heart skipped a beat when he made it to the porch and he halted in front of the door, taking a deep breath in.
He was about to knock, when a thought jumped into his head.
You were scrolling on your phone, trying everything to get Cam out of your head. But everything you saw reminded him of you. You even came past a video of whales and wanted to scream out loud. Why was your phone working against you?
A knock on your window interrupted your furious thoughts and confusion washed over you. You don’t remember meeting up with anyone, or telling someone to come by your window. Scared that it might be a burglar, you grabbed the first object you saw to use as a weapon. However, when you opened your window, the last person you expected was in front of you, heavily panting. “Cameron?” You questioned, lowering your weapon since there wasn’t an actual real threat.
“Hi.” He simply greeted with a grin, before climbing into your room. He stood way too close to you, making your breath hitch as he dusted himself off. But you weren’t going to let him notice what kind of effect he had on you, so the best you could do is just bicker like you used to to mask it.
“What are you doing here? Trying to rob me or something?” You asked as you took a few steps back, “‘Cause I’m not afraid to use this!” You showed the bedside table lamp in your hands.
“Calm down, Y/l/n,” He chuckled as he put his hand on your arm to lower it, and you just allowed him to do so. You felt yourself relax at the warmth and touch of his hand and mentally cursed yourself for this. He liked at you with a small smile, a smile that made your heart flutter in your chest.
Cam’s hand lingered on your arm, before he cleared his throat and quickly removed it. Around everyone, he was always shy and reserved, but with you it was different. You brought out some confidence in him he never knew he had. And Cam never understood why, but with you, he felt at ease and weirdly enough, safe. Whenever he even looked in your direction, his worries would vanish as if they never existed.
Cam walked past you slowly and looked around your room. He tried to memorise every object on your desk, every little detail in your room. “Why are you ignoring me?” He asked, throwing his head over his shoulder to look at you. You were standing there at loss for words, trying to come up with a good excuse. He nodded to himself when you didn’t answer before continuing his walk around your room.
“I should be asking you the questions! Why are you in my room, Sextus?” You crossed your arms over chest and watched him let out a laugh at the name you called him. The sound made you burst of out happiness, but you weren’t planning on showing.
“Please, Ceres, be honest with me…” He started walking back towards you slowly, his eyes never leaving yours. The way he remembered the name you used at the latin convention made your heart skip a beat. “Why would I?” You said with a loud huff and you turned your head to the side with your eyes closed.
When you opened your eyes, Cam’s face was only an inch from yours, and you felt your guard fall down. It would’ve been so much easier if Cam didn’t have this effect on you. Your face fell. “Stop.” You mumbled, inaudible for him to hear.
“What was that?” He inquired genuinely, getting even closer if that was even possible. “Stop!” You spoke out louder, making him jump out of his skin, but soft enough for it to be a whisper. “Stop what?” Cam asked curiously. You stared into his eyes, trying to find something, think of something to make you hate him again. But as you looked into his deep eyes, all you could think about what you could be, as something else than enemies.
You looked at the ground in defeat, before continuing, “I’m trying so hard, Cameron, so hard.”
Cam was quiet as he looked at you with a confused look on his face, and he wanted you to tell him everything that was on your mind. When you looked up at him, Cam noticed that there was something else in your eyes. Something else than what he usually saw, and he couldn’t quite place what it was. “Cameron, I’m trying so hard not to hate you.” You whispered.
Cam’s heart was pounding out of his chest, while he was looking at you with his mouth agape ever so slightly. He hoped your words meant what he thought they meant, and his hand reached for yours.
A yell of your name woke both you and Cam out of your trance, eyes widening in panic. “Is everything okay up there?” Your mom yelled from downstairs, and you heard her footsteps coming up the stairs. Cam rushed towards your window, and you helped him get out quickly. Before he got down, he said something that you spent thinking about the weeks that followed, “I’m really trying hard to hate you too, but I can’t. No matter how hard I try.”
Ever since he dropped by, you had avoided him more than you initially did. And that made Cam wonder what he did or said wrong that day. You were all what he could think about, and if he wasn’t thinking about you, he was dreaming about you or speaking about you.
Whenever you saw him, you would walk the other way, you would pretend you didn’t see him standing. You basically ignored his existence. And for Cam it felt like a stab through the heart, a deep and painful one.
This continued until the debutant ball.
Cam was standing on the flight of stairs behind two other escorts and in front of many others, waiting for the girl’s name he was escorting to be announced. He didn’t know how he ended up here, escorting a girl, who he didn’t even really knew that well, to the debutant ball, But he would do anything to keep his mother happy, so here he was.
He was nervously fidgeting with his fingers, his mind on you like it always has been since the first time he saw you. A part of him wished it was you he was escorting. He wished that he was the one who first saw you in your dress before your presentation.
He fantasised how he actually wanted this day to go. You standing there in a beautiful dress, looking drop-dead gorgeous like you always did. Him being the one to look at you with an encouraging smile and mouthing to you how enchanting you looked. It was all you deserved and more. It killed him he wasn’t the one to be doing it.
When it was Cam’s to turn to go up stage and escort the girl, he imagined it was you by his side. He flashed her a polite smile as she did the same and watched as her eyes drifted off to behind him. Cam followed her eyes and saw that she was looking at none other than the guy who was escorting you.
Cam and the girl got off the stage and walked over to the other debutants, waiting for the next debutant to be presented. And when your name was called, Cam felt a heavy flutter in his chest he most certainly couldn’t ignore.
The girl beside him watched his demeanour change at the sound of your name and smiled to herself. She always had the feeling Cam had a thing for you.
When you appeared on stage, Cam’s eyes were drawn to you. The way you looked in your dress was indescribable and the way you glowed made his heart race a million miles per hour. You scanned the crowd, trying to find a familiar face to ease your nerves. And when your eyes locked Cam’s warm ones it felt as if the world stopped turning. Every single person around you disappeared, it was just you and him.
And your nerves disappeared as quickly as they appeared.
You never pulled your eyes away from his gaze as you walked down the stage with your escort. The escort who had picked up on your crush on Cam a long while back.
Cam tried his best to keep his composure, he was refraining himself from running over to you and holding you like there was no tomorrow, he tried his best not to think about all the ways he would compliment you and make you feel good.
You and your escort halted in front of the table your parents were sitting at and you finally broke eye contact with Cam. Your heart was pounding out of your chest and you were thinking about Cam all the damn time as you waited for the presentations to finish.
When they did, every debutant with their escort bowed down to the table with their family. Afterwards, everyone sat down and waited for some surprise performance the escorts were giving. Your escort waited for you to take a seat next to one of your parents, before he parted as well after flashing you a small smile.
“You looked amazing, honey.” Your mom praised, putting a hand on your shoulder. You thanked her and looked around the ball room, trying to find the one person who lived in your mind rent free. Cam was just walking past to get to the other escorts, when his eyes met yours once again. But this time you looked away after a few seconds, trying to nonchalantly brush off the fact you had a major crush on the guy you had thought was your number one enemy.
After the sudden dance performance, your escort had disappeared somewhere, along with the girl Cam was escorting. But neither of you seemed to care, as all you did was gaze at each other longingly, waiting for the people to announce when the first dance was about to take place.
Your parents, who were seated beside you, had noticed your stares and stolen glances towards the boy and smiled at each other knowingly. You tried to hide it, but they knew you. They knew when their daughter was actually in love.
The sound of glass clinking was heard, before a woman announced that it was time. And at that moment you woke up from your trance, realising your escort was still nowhere to be seen. Every debutant, alongside with her escort was gathering on the dance floor, except for you and, well, Cam.
“Mom, where is he?” You questioned worriedly. “It doesn’t matter,” She answered, making your eyebrows furrow in confusion, “I think there’s someone else you’d much rather want to share this dance with.”
She tilted her head towards a certain direction, and you knew immediately who she was referring to. But your eyes followed the direction she meant anyway, with a racing heart.
Cam was standing there, looking at you like a man in love. That’s because he is. He is in love. And before you knew it, your feet made their way towards him. You halted in front of him with a smile. You were panting like you had just run a marathon, but you didn’t care, because you were right in front of who you wanted to be.
“Seems like we both don’t have a dance partner, huh?” Cam chuckled, scratching the back of his neck nervously. All you could do was nod in respond, the words you actually wanted to speak out seeming to be stuck in your throat.
Your hands reached for his and when your fingers intertwined, you could’ve sworn you heard Cam let out a deep breath. The music started playing, and the two of you were drowning in one another’s eyes as you danced to the music just like you had practiced. The tension between the two of you was unbearable throughout the entire dance.
And once the dance ended, when you were in the end position, his face was awfully close to yours and you had to do anything in your power to not plant your lips on his. He pulled you back up, with way more force than he intended, which resulted into you being flush against his chest. Your faces only a few inches away, which made it even harder to refrain yourself.
You pulled away slowly, even when you wish you could stay like that forever. The words you desired to speak were stuck in your throat, and your eyes fell down, feeling flustered by everything that has happened this night. He wanted to say so much as he looked at you with a lovesick smile, but he didn’t know how. His right hand fine yours as he put his left hand under your chin.
He stroked your cheek gently with his thumb, his eyes fixated you and only you. You were the only thing that mattered to him any day, anywhere, anytime.
Every couple around you started to leave the dance floor, but you and Cam stayed there without a care in the world. “Let’s get out of here.” He whispered, in which you grinned to in response.
He gave your hand a gentle squeeze as you walked towards the exit of the ball room, giggles and chuckles leaving your lips. Your parents watched from afar, knowing you were finally with the one you liked all along.
Warnings: lots of dialogue. swearing. angsty mention of a breakup. little kiss. fluffy ending tho. UNEDITED
a/n: the timeline that i have doesn't fully match with the actual series. also if you feel like you're seeing this twice it's because this was going to be two parts but i ended up liking it as one!
“You’re coming back this year, no more moping around about it, and that’s final,” your mom tells you.
“But what am I even suppose to do this summer while I’m there, it’s not like I have anything planned.”
“Actually, I signed you up to be a big sister this year for the debutante ball.”
“Wait, what?” you question.
“I knew you would say something like that so I got you something to do while we’re there.”
“Fine, whatever.”
You were sat at table two by Paige, the lady hosting the event and instructor. All the girls were mainly welcoming to you. Asking you questions like if this was your first time in Cousins and why they haven’t seen you around. You brushed off a majority of the questions but told them that you had skipped out last year due to college admissions. Which wasn’t a complete lie since you went to go tour universities like Upenn, Columbia, NYU, and Yale. You got early admission into Columbia and it started beginning of July of last year.
You learned the girls' names which are Nicole, Shayla, Gigi, and a couple others. You tried your best to not give a reaction when they mentioned the infamous Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher. You noticed the chair next to you was still open at your table.
“Hey, are we missing anybody?” you asked the girls.
“Yeah, this girl is a new deb this year,” Nicole replied to you.
Out of the corner of your eye, you see Belly Conklin and Jeremiah Fisher walking into the room. You wanted to sink down to the floor to disappear but it was too late. You saw Jeremiah dodge Paige and make his way towards you all giddy. You saw the girls around the table slightly fix their dresses thinking he was coming toward them. You keep your eyes glued down to the table but looked up the second he called your name. What a rookie mistake.
“Y/N! You’re back, man, Conrad is not going to believe this. We missed you last summer. Are you back for good or you going to disappear again?” he rambles to you as he gets closer. He hugs you from behind your chair and kisses your cheek. You blush immediately and notice that Gigi is glaring at you from the table.
“Hey, Jere,” you mumble out.
“I’m glad, you’re here.”
“You know, me too,” you found yourself admitting out loud.
“Okay, I gotta go before Paige has me kicked out, but I’ll text you,” he says rushing out the door.
“Hi, Bells,” you greet the oh-so-familiar girl taking a seat next to you.
“Hey, Y/N,” she replies, smiling at you.
“So when were you going to tell us that you know, a certain lifeguard…” Nicole teases you, trying to ease the tension at the table.
“Family friend, you know.”
“But that’s it, right?” Gigi asks you.
“Yeah, of course. He’s like my little brother.”
Tumblr media
“Y/N, wait up!” you hear from behind you seeing Belly.
“Belly?”
“I don’t want to push you or anything, but I just want to you know that I think Conrad would really enjoy a visit from you, we all would,” she says bashfully looking down to her feet.
“Bells, I miss you too, but he was the one who broke up with me, remember? I don’t think that’s the best idea.”
“Think about it, okay?” she tries again
“Maybe.”
Tumblr media
“CONRAD, GUESS WHAT!” Jere yells barging into Conrad’s room.
“What, Jere?” Conrad says, tiredly looking at him from his bed.
“She’s back.”
“Who’s back?” Conrad questions him.
“Who else, Y/N!” as those words left Jeremiah’s mouth, Conrad found himself getting whiplash from getting up so quickly.
“You sure, it wasn’t some girl that just looked like her?” he asked.
“Oh, it was her,” he hears Belly add from the hallway.
“You’re shitting, me,” Conrad says exasperated falling back down to his bed.
‘Ding’ Jeremiah takes his phone out of his pocket to look at the text message he had just got. He looks to Conrad who had his head stuffed into a pillow then went back out of the hallway to call for Belly.
“Hey, Belly, you wanna go get ice cream with, Y/N?” that got the attention of quite a few people in the house.
“Of course, when?” “Wait, Y/N’s back?” “You’re going where?” all directed towards Jeremiah who seemed occupied on his phone texting back.
“Bells, later before dinner so like in 20-30 mins. Steven, yeah, we saw her today at the deb lunch thing. And, umm, Conrad, we’re going out with Y/N,” Jeremiah blurts out in a rush.
“You think I could go?” Conrad asks.
“Yeah, me too,” Steven adds on.
“Steven, yeah sure that’s fine. I don’t know, Conrad.”
“Come on, I’m sure, she won’t even care,” Conrad pushes.
“Fine, but you better not make her feel unwelcomed. Don’t be selfish here, we all miss her you know,” Jere gives in.
Tumblr media
Your breakup with Conrad didn’t just affect you two but the families too. Your dad didn’t really like Conrad after finding you in your room crying when he had broken up with you. You were thankful for your parents especially your dad considering he was your shoulder to cry on during it. He made sure your mom didn’t push you too much during the weeks after everything happened. You loved your mom, but she never really got the hint when to stop at times. After the breakup your family still went to Susannah’s Fourth of July party that year, breaking the news to everyone you skipped out of going to Cousins because of college admissions. Everyone knew that it was deeper than that.
When Conrad had broken up with you it was truly out of fear, you never knew that. You believed that he didn’t want to be with you anymore and didn’t care enough to give you a valid reason for it. Nobody really understood why he did it. It was so out of the blue since it seemed like you two were so in love with each other. They never expected for Conrad to turn so cold to you right before the summer, well neither did you.
What was going through Conrad’s mind was the fear you would find someone better than him at the universities you talked about. He thought to save himself the pain and do it first. He broke up with you thinking that you would move on and be with some college guy. He loved you too much to see you fall into the arms of someone else while he wasn’t there. He trusted you, but that didn’t stop his fears from overwhelming him. What really pushed him over was when he found out that his dad cheated on his mom while she was going through chemotherapy.
He was so scared to lose you that he lost you in the process.
Tumblr media
You sat down outside of the ice cream parlor, nervous to be spending time with them again. Jeremiah had responded to your text saying he and Belly would both be going. You looked around to see if Jere’s car was around but you see a red jeep pulling up from down the street.
“Shit,” you muttered to yourself.
You prayed that maybe Jeremiah just took Conrad’s car instead of his, but it seemed like the world was against you when you saw him coming out of the car.
“Yo, Y/N, I didn’t believe Jere when he said he was coming to meet you,” you hear Steven say first approaching you. He pulled you into a hug whispering into your ear. “Don’t worry about him, okay?”
You appreciated Steven in moments like this.  You guys have a very brother-sister relationship and he always tried to look out for you. He won't admit it out loud but he was so furious with Conrad screwing up with you. He called you immediately when he found out last you. You've been helping him with trying to prepare for Princeton without anyone knowing. You reassured him that he could do it.
“I’ll try,” you whisper back while hugging him back.
“Y/N!! Oh, have I missed you,” Jere says tackling you with a hug after Steven stepped back.
“You saw me earlier, you know,” you laughed at him.
“Yeah, but for like a minute, so that doesn’t count.”
“You guys could let her breathe,” Belly says behind Jere waiting her turn to talk to you.
“Hey, Bells,” you smiled at her.
“I’m glad, you thought about it,” she says to you quietly.
“I didn’t though, I texted Jere thinking only you and him would be here,” you whisper into her ear as you two hug. You glared at Jeremiah, but he didn’t seem to notice or maybe he just didn’t care.
“Oh, sorry about that,” she responds to you nervously as she lets go.
You felt the world stop for a second when you locked eyes with the one and only Conrad Fisher.
“Hey.”
“Hello, to you too,” you replied monotoned. You didn’t want to give him the pleasure of giving him a reaction to his presence.
“Let’s get ice cream, shall we?” Jeremiah says cutting the tension between you two as you turned your head to look at him.
“Yeah, let’s head in,” you said changing back to your usual tone.
Tumblr media
“So, how’s uni?” Steven asked once you guys headed back outside to sit down.
“It’s interesting, to say the least…” you started
“Any hot people?” Jeremiah said, wiggling his eyebrows at you. You felt Conrad’s eyes bore into you when Jere asked the question.
“Some, but frat boys aren’t really the best at relationships,” you answered.
“YOU GOT WITH A FRAT GUY??” Belly gasped.
“No way, you gave a frat a chance, Y/N,” Steven added.
“It was just a fling. Nothing that serious, really. We went out for like two weeks before I broke up with him,” you said looking at everyone sheepishly.
“Was he good?” Conrad challenged.
“Excuse me?” you said puzzled. You couldn’t believe the nerve he had to ask you that.
“Conrad, chill,” Jeremiah gapped at him.
“Belly, how do you feel about being a deb?” you asked Belly trying to move on from the subject.
“Umm… I don’t know honestly. I’m really nervous about it but I’m glad you got assigned to be my big sister cause I don’t know what I would do without you,” she rambled on.
“Bells, you’ll be great. There’s nothing to worry about and if anything happens we’ll do it together, okay,” you said as you squeezed her hand affectively.
“I can’t believe you’re a big sis, Y/N,” Steven joked with you.
“Yeah, my mom made me deb last year in New York. Then she signed me up to help here.”
“That sounds like her,” Conrad said quietly.
“Did you have fun last year?” Jere asked.
“I did actually. It helped take my mind off things,” you answered while making eye contact with Conrad for a sec before turning your attention back to Jere.
“Someone escorted you?” Steven voiced out.
“Yeah, I have a friend Luke who took me.” as you said that you heard Conrad scoff at the name.
“Hey, we have to head back soon but what if you came to dinner? Please think about it, mom misses you,” Jere begged you.
“Yeah sure,” you agreed already regretting your decision.
“You want one of us to ride back with you?” Belly asked with a mischievous look on her face.
“If one of you want to sure,” you had a feeling where this was going.
“Conrad will go with you,” Jeremiah stated while Conrad stared at him wide-eyed.
“Whatever, I guess, you’re driving though,” you add turning to Conrad.
“Okay,” he muttered out.
Tumblr media
The driving was filled with tension. Neither of you talking to each other but sneaking side glances hoping no one will notice.
“Columbia, treating you good?” he asked while looking to the road.
“Better than you did,” you said bitterly
“Y/n/n, don’t be like that.”
“Be like what?”
“I’m sorry,” he said so quietly that you barely heard it.
“For what exactly?”
“For making a mistake.”
“Conrad, stop.”
“I’m not doing anything.”
“You know what you’re doing and stop it.”
“What am I doing?”
“You trying to make me forgive you after everything.”
“Can you?”
“That’s not the point. Why should I give you the decency of forgiveness when you couldn’t even give me a damn reason.” you scoffed as he pulled in front of the house.
You walked out of the car and headed towards the door, taking deep breaths to calm yourself down. You got to the door and debated on knocking but instead chose to walk in trying to not make any noise. You heard Conrad shuffle behind you but ignored him. You walked into the kitchen and saw Laurel and Susannah cooking dinner. You sat down at the counter not wanting to disturb them.
“Y/N! You’re here!” Susannah says happily to you. She lowered the heat on the stove and went to you for a hug.
“Hey, Y/N,” you hear Laurel say while you are engulfed in a hug from Susannah.
“Mom, you can let her breathe now,” Conrad told his mom.
“Connie, be quiet for a second. Let me just admire her, she’s so beautiful.” you blush at her words.
“Your mom was telling me that you got into Columbia last year right?” Laurel asked.
“Yeah, early admission.”
“That’s exciting,” she replies.
“Now, why haven’t visited us yet?” Susannah questioned you.
“I’m sorry, I’ve been busy getting stuff together to be a big sis for the ball,” you answered giving an excuse for the summer only.
“Oh, Belly was telling me about that. She’s really glad that she can spend time with you again. She’s always looked up to you,” Laurel said smiling warmly at you.
“I missed her.”
“Well, we’ve all missed you,” Susannah told you slightly glaring at Conrad behind you, pulling you into another hug.
“Yeah.” you hear behind you.
Tumblr media
Nothing was ever in your favor. You sat right next to Conrad and had Steven next to you and Belly in front of you. The room was filled with awkward tension seeping from both you and Conrad. You talked to Steven quietly as everyone else had their own conversations.
“How’s the application process?” you asked Steven.
“Dad, says he thinks I can get in with some financial aid and I’m going to apply for a couple scholarships.”
“A couple scholarships for what?” Laurel sparks interest in your guys’ conversation.
“I’m applying to Princeton,” Steven told her. Everyone dropped their side conversations and paid attention to Laurel and him.
“I thought you gave up on that.”
“No, Dad and Y/N think I can do it if I get some help so I thought it was worth a shot,” he says to her slowly quieting his voice by the end of it.
“Laurel, Steven will be fine. If I could get into Columbia on a full ride, I’m sure he can too,” you try to reassure her.
“Yeah, and Y/N would only be like a 2-hour drive away too if I ever need anything,” Steven adds on.
“Steven, I think that’s great for you, hun,” Susannah says sweetly.
“You going to let me steal your sweatshirt?” Belly asks Steven excitedly.
“As if,” Steven scoffs.
“Hey, Bells how do you feel about a Columbia hoodie?” you say to Belly trying to make up for Steven’s rudeness.
“Really?”
“Yeah, of course, I’ll bring it next time.”
“So you’ll be here the next time?” Jeremiah says jokingly.
“I'll be around.”
“That’s great, sweetheart. It would be nice having you around again,” Susannah tells you as you feel Conrad’s stare from your side.
“How’s football, Conrad?” you asked trying to make small talk.
“I quit.”
“Oh.”
“You still doing volleyball?”
“Yeah, I’m trying out for captain next year.”
“That’s good.”
Tumblr media
“Can we talk?” you hear Conrad say behind you.
“Sure, give me a sec. Jere, she really likes you don’t mess it up.”
“I won’t!” Jeremiah yelled walking back into the house.
You and Conrad sit beside the pool as everyone is inside. You kept a distance between you two but Conrad seemed to inch closer to you by the minute.
“What’d you want to talk about?” you said breaking the silence.
“I never meant to hurt you.”
“You see, Conrad that’s the problem you did.”
“It was for the best.”
“What do you mean for the best, I was in love with you.”
“I loved you too.”
“Sure didn’t seem that way when you said you wanted a break.”
“Y/N, I was scared okay.”
“Scared for what exactly, Conrad?” you snapped him not getting where he was going with this conversation.
“We would’ve never lasted with you in college.”
“Well, now we’ll never know.”
“You seemed to move on pretty quick so I guess I was right.”
“Oh fuck you, Conrad. I had my heart broken because of you and all you think is that.”
“You were going to leave me.” Conrad implied as his voice cracked.
“What?” you said looking at him and making eye contact.
“You would’ve found some college guy and probably notice how much better he is than me.”
“Conrad, I don’t understand.”
“I was so fucking scared, Y/N. I thought maybe if I broke up with you first it would save me some of the heartache. I think it only made it worse.”
“What do you mean ‘broke up with me first’? Conrad, I would’ve never done that to you and I’m offended you don’t have any faith in me.”
“My dad cheated on my mom okay,” he said to you looking down towards the pool.
“Oh, Con, I’m so sorry,” you grabbed his hand. You felt him tighten his hold against yours when you tried to pull back.
“I found out a week before we broke up.”
“Oh," you muttered under your breath as everything started clicking in your mind about how your breakup went down.
“I’m sorry, Y/N. For everything.”
“I know, Con,” you said.
Conrad Fisher always had that effect on you. No matter how much you tried to deny it you would always love him. For that, you would always end up forgiving him in the end. You wondered if he still had any love for you back.
“You know I never stopped loving you,” he said quietly, reconnecting your eyes. It was almost as if he read your mind.
“No. You can’t do that, Conrad. It hurts too much,” you said feeling tears fill your eyes.
“I should’ve never done what I did.”
“Conrad, stop.”
“No. I need you to know I regret it okay.”
“You’re only saying this cause I’m back,” you said as the tears fell from your eyes.
“I’m not. You know I tried visiting you once a couple weeks after everything but you were rehearsing with Luke,” he told you as he raised his hand to wipe away your tears.
“Why didn’t you say anything?” you flushed as you saw him stare at your face slowly taking you in admiration.
“I thought you would be better off without me,” he said rubbing his thumb against your cheek.
“Con,” you found yourself slowly leaning into his touch.
“I’ve always adored you.”
You tried looking away from him but you felt him gently grab your chin and tilt it up towards him.
“You’re an ass.” you laughed trying to put your nerves away as you looked down to his lips before traveling your eyes back to his.
“I love you and I am sorry,” he whispered to you as he pulled you in.
“Con, this is wrong.”
“Nothing is wrong. It’s only us,” he said inches away from your lips.
He put his lips against yours and grabbed your face closer to him. You found yourself kissing him back wrapping your arms around his neck. It was as if you could feel the emotion Conrad was putting into this kiss, it felt like he was giving it his all. As if it was to make up for the past.
“Always know how to make a girl blush,” you said against his lips. You felt the vibration of his laugh as you said it. You missed hearing it. He pushed his lips back onto yours with the same kind of passion as before.
“Only you,” he responded as he pulled back leaning his forehead against yours.
“Do you really think this is smart?” you muttered.
“It was stupid of me to ruin what we had in the first place.”
“Okay.” and with that, he grabbed your face into his hands.
“You. You’re the one I love and I promise I won’t make the same mistake.”
conrad’s pov
Since Y/n is unable to hold a phone herself, I'm tasked with a lot, but I didn't fully realize the worry of her family until she had me working through each task with her.
No wonder she’s overwhelmed. The number of texts from Laurel, Mom, Belly, Jere and Steven she has to sift through in a given hour would drive anyone insane.
Or maybe I'm just going crazy by sitting this close to her. The smell of her coconut soap is permanently ingrained into my memory as she sits flush against me, pointing at different texts with her uninjured hand.
I can tell her nerves grow stronger as the Uber near the hospital.
Her knees bounce up and down as she dictates message after message I need to send, confusing me more and more with every word.
The work doesn't stop there. After we check in, a nurse hands us a clipboard filled with pages of information that need to be filled out. Y/n stares at it like it might catch on fire at any moment.
"Here." I pass it to her.
Her eyes shift toward the exit. "Will you help me please? I can't write like this." Her voice drops to a barely audible whisper.
"Okay. Tell me your answers and I'll write them down."
Her throat bobs as she scans the first line. It takes her far longer than necessary to read the first question.
"Do you mind reading the questions aloud for me? I'm too stressed to concentrate right now." Her overcompensating smile irritates me.
"Are you sure? Some of the questions are probably personal."
Don't be a dick. Just do what she says.
"I don't care.”
The rigid way she sits in her chair says the complete opposite.
She seems to be one minute away from breaking down, so I concede. I sigh as I grab the pen and get started on the first question. The paperwork doesn't take us as long as I anticipated, so Y/n and I sit together in silence. She stares at the exit longingly.
The way her eyes dart around the room as she gnaws on her bottom lip makes me feel merciful enough to save her from the anxiety eating her up inside.
“If it's any consolation, I hate hospitals too."
Her head swings toward the direction of my voice.
"Yeah?"
I nod. "Haven't been to one since…"
"I know." she says as she sees my chest heaves as I remember the millions of times we’ve been here before.
I keep my eyes focused on the soundless television playing in one corner.
Her good hand clasps onto mine and gives it a squeeze. I'm grateful she understands me enough not to ask any other questions. The idea of offering another raw part of myself feels like a betrayal of the years I've spent carefully developing a certain kind of persona.
"I hate them too." Her voice cracks.
"Why?"
She stares down at her swollen hand. “My dad…” She pauses, and I give her hand a reassuring squeeze like she gave me. "Let's just say mom ended up in the ER a couple of times for being clumsy."
I take a deep breath to stave off the anger bubbling beneath the surface. "And did you have issues with being clumsy?" If she says yes, I swear to God two men will end up floating in the Chicago River tonight.
She shakes her head rather aggressively. "No. No." My rapid heart rate can be heard through my ears. "If you were, you can tell me." While I can't promise I won't do anything about it, I can promise to make him hurt. A lot. With sulfuric acid or something, those pre-med studies are starting to come in handy now.
The overwhelming sense of protectiveness hits me hard, and I don't shy away from it. There is nothing I hate more than men who use their fists against innocent women and children.
"It never got to that point. Suze made sure of it." she says with a small smile.
"How?"
"She caught onto the signs and interfered before things got bad. Used her savings from my grandpa's life insurance policy to help Mom get a divorce and start a new life." A tear slips down her face, and I can't stand the sight of it.
I brush it away with the pad of my thumb, but the damp trail still lingers. A driving force inside of me wants to erase the sad look on her face. "Did her plan also happen to include a jug of sulfuric acid?"
She forces out a laugh. "I think concrete shoes were more in style back then."
I fake shudder. "Remind me to never make mom angry again."
"Forget her, you'd have to deal with me." She holds up her injured hand like a war trophy.
"I'm absolutely terrified."
"Miss Y/n?" a nurse calls out.
Y/n doesn't move at the sound of her name.
"That's you." I place my hand on her thigh and give it a squeeze.
She sucks in a deep breath as she stares down at my hand.
Her chair nearly tumbles behind her as she bolts out of the seat, throwing her one good hand up in the air. "I'm here!"
The nurse leads us through the emergency room bay.
Individual beds line the wall, each area divided by a paper curtain.
The empty bed meant for Y/n is unacceptable. Between the person retching behind one partition and the individual on the other side hacking up their lung, I refuse to let her be seen here.
"I'd like my…my friend, to be taken care of in a private suite," I speak up. I know I sound snotty right now but honestly, I’ll be damned if I let her already horrible hospital experience get any worse.
The nurse grimaces as her gaze licks across my body. "This is a hospital. Not the Ritz. Take a seat and wait for the doctor like everyone else."
Y/n hops on the bed without any complaint, and I'm tempted to grab her and go elsewhere. The nurse doesn't seem the least bit bothered by all the noise happening around us as she checks Y/n’s vitals and asks some routine questions.
Y/n answers each one while chewing her bottom lip raw. This atmosphere couldn't put anyone at ease, least of all her.
The nurse hangs the clipboard at the foot of the bed, and I decide to try again.
"I'll pay whatever it takes to have her seen somewhere quieter. Money is no object."
The nurse only replies by shutting the paper curtain in my face.
Y/n laughs while I stare at the curtain, dumbfounded to be treated like this.
"You find this funny?"
She nods, her eyes alight for the first time all night. "Did you see her face when you said money is no object? I think if she didn't put the clipboard away, she would have slapped your face with it."
"It's not my fault she isn't accustomed to how things are done in the real world."
"Wake up baby. You're living in the real world." She waves around our room.
"It's terrifying." I say, looking away so she couldn’t see the blush that appeared on my face at the nickname.
"Come here. I'II make it better." Y/n pats the bed.
Doubtful, but I'm a glutton for giving her what she wants lately. Paper crinkles as I sit next to her. I take up most of the bed, giving her little room to get away from me. My thigh brushes against hers. She tries to scoot away, but there isn't enough space.
“Isn’t this cozy?" she quips.
I give her a small smile before she asks, “Hey! Let me see your tattoo.”
God I’d forgotten all about them. I move the collar of my shirt to show the two small ivy leaves we’d gotten. She gasps and gently touches my skin, “Oh my gosh it’s so pretty Connie.” she stares at it for a moment before I ask to see hers.
She lifts up her shirt on the side, exposing her ribcage and the two matching leaves.
“I can’t believe you agreed to get a Taylor Swift referenced tattoo with me Con.” she says as I admire the tattoo for a bit.
I smile until saying, “Hey I might be quiet and mopey but at least I have good taste in music.”
She softly smiles at me before eyeing the IV bag with horror before checking out the exit.
"What’s wrong?”
She leans closer to me and whispers, "Is now a bad time to admit I pass out whenever someone tries to stick a needle in me?"
My lips lift at the corners. I don't know why I find the idea hilarious, given her ability to watch eight consecutive hours of true crime documentaries without so much as flinching.
"You're afraid of needles?"
She sputters. "No. I'm not afraid. It just happens to be a bodily reaction I can't control."
“That's good then because the nurse needs to set you up with that IV when she comes back."
“No! Don't tell me that! I thought she was one of the good ones.”
I nod, pressing my lips together to prevent myself from laughing.
"She lied to me!" She bolts from the seat and would have tripped over her own heels if I didn't reach out and catch her.
*Careful." I place her back on the bed and decide to stand guard in case she gets any ideas to flee the scene.
Her eyes fit from me to the gap between two curtains, as if she is thinking how she can get past me.
"I'm joking.”
She scans my face for the truth before she slaps my shoulder with her good hand. "Asshole! I believed you!"
Laughter explodes out of me like a bomb, stunning her.
“Did you just laugh?”
"No."
“Yes." Someone calls out from the other side of the curtain.
“Now, do you mind shutting up? Some of us are trying to get some sleep over here after having our stomach pumped."
Fuck this place and the people in here. "We're leaving."
"Not so fast. You can't leave before I check you out." The doctor strolls in and points at the bed with his clipboard.
Y/n remains tight-lipped as the doctor checks her chart. He asks her some questions about how she got hurt, all while staring me up and down like I'm the person she was trying to injure. She is taken away for a few scans, and my breathing doesn't return to normal until the nurse brings her back.
That should be my first sign that things are getting out of hand on my end. I'm inching closer to an emotional minefield without any kind of map, only one wrong step away from exploding.
The doctor checks the scans. "It looks like you have a boxer's fracture."
Her face brightens. "That sounds badass."
I glare at her. "Calm down, Muhammad Ali. I wouldn't count today as a victory by any means."
The doctor's eyes lighten. "Next time, avoid any initial contact on the fourth and fifth knuckles."
"Please don't encourage her."
The doctor shakes his head with a laugh before giving Y/n a detailed set of instructions regarding the healing time. I'm skeptical about the whole visit and, given the setting, doubtful about the level of care. I'll be damned if Y/n sustains permanent injuries because of Dean. My chest tightens at the idea.
“Great Thanks, Doc!" She hops off the bed, but I hold my arm out, stopping her
"I’d like a second opinion." The command bursts out of me without any rhyme or reason. Deep down, I know a boxer's fracture isn't the worst thing that could have happened. But things aren't right in my head where Y/n is concerned. At least not anymore.
Both of the doctor's eyebrows arch. "For a small fracture?"
"Don't mind him. He tends to be a bit overbearing." She shoots me a look as if I'm the crazy one out of the two of us.
"Okay..." the doctor says.
Maybe I am losing it because why else would I care?
You hate it when she cries.
You wouldn't mind murdering someone who hurt her.
You took her to the hospital even though you despise them with every fibre of your being.
The signs all point to one thing: our situation is quickly crumbling, and I'm the only one to blame.
Y/n interrupts my thoughts. "I'll be sure to wear the brace for a few weeks and avoid any kind of activities that could aggravate the injury."
"Perfect. And don't forget to schedule a follow-up visit with your physician. "The doctor gives me one last look before handing Y/n the discharge paperwork. "Nice meeting you."
"Will you help me with this?" She holds out the clipboard with her left hand as the doctor leaves.
I grab it from her and fill it out.
She checks the time on her phone. "Well, at least that didn't take as long as I thought it would. I'm sure you're dying to get back home."
That's the scary thing. I didn't think about anything or anyone once during our entire time here because making sure she was taken care of was my only concern. I've spent the past seventeen years of my life thinking solely about my future, and all it took was one girl to make me completely forget about my responsibilities for a few hours.
As if that doesn't scare me enough, it only takes one glance at her makeshift brace to make my blood burn hot under my skin. I know exactly why her injury angers me more than anything else.
It's the same reason I feel the urge to push Jere away from her whenever he gets too close or the way I unexplainably need to see her whenever she is out of my sight for longer than a few hours.
You’re in love with her.
Fuck.
y/n’s pov
We’re in an Uber on the way home, sitting in comfortable silence until Conrad breaks it.
“Why’d you get with Dean anyway?” My stomach doubles over.
Comfortable silence is so overrated.
I sigh. I’ve been dreading this question for ages now.
“I don’t know.” I answer vaguely.
Conrad gives me a puzzled look, “What do you mean you don't know? You must’ve had a reason.”
His restlessness gets me more agitated.
“I don’t know Conrad. I don’t know why I got with him, I don’t know why I was waiting on you for so long either.” I look out the window as the car stops in front of the house.
“What? What do you mean?” he says as I get out the car and speed up to the front door, taking the keys out of my pocket and refusing to carry on with this conversation anymore.
Conrad keeps yelling after me as he follows me upstairs to my room, both of us trying to ignore everyone else who joined Conrad and are trying to ask their own questions.
I slam my door shut and collapse on my bed hearing Conrad trying to calm everyone down and telling them everything that's happened until he asks them all to give me some space for now.
I cry in the silence as I hear everyone leaving from outside the door until it opens.
“Hey.”
Steven. Thank God.
“Steve…” I say sniffling.
He looks at me with a sad smile before sitting on the bed with me and taking me in his arms.
“Con told us everything,” he says after a few minutes of holding me, “did you really get a boxer's fracture?”
I laugh in tears before showing him my hand and saying, “You should see the other guy.”
Steven and I laugh together before going back to the silence as he hugs me.
“He really cares about you, you know.”
“No he doesn’t. He hates me. I yelled at him and now I’m crying here on my bed like an idiot.”
“Did he say anything to you?” Steven looks down at me.
I shake my head before saying, “He asked why I got with Dean.”
“Oh. That’s not too bad.”
“No it’s not.”
“Then why are you so upset?”
“Because I’ve been waiting for Conrad for so long and I’m just sick and tired of always being there to help him get over his breakups when he’d be so much better off with me. I know I sound selfish and none of my reasons are justified but I just thought that after everything we’ve been through together, he’d maybe like me just a little bit.”
Steven hugs me again and softly says, “He does.”
After that almost everyone but Conrad came in to check up on me and make sure I was okay, making me feel even more guilty about being all emotional like this. It’s not until Susannah’s holding me and whispering sweet nothings that my eyes start to feel heavy.
I think I fell asleep after that, I don’t remember much except waking up to the sun shining its very unwelcome face in my eyes.
I step out of my room after freshening up and I’m about to make my way to the kitchen for food until I’m stopped by something in the hallway.
Or should I say someone.
“Conrad,” I bend down and stroke his hair out of his face, “Conrad wake up.” I say gently.
He stirs for a minute before sitting up and taking my hands in his.
“Have you been out here all night?” I ask.
“Yes.” he says in a raspy voice.
God that voice would make my knees give out if I wasn’t already on the floor with him.
“Why?”
“I need to talk to you.”
I sigh before he interrupts me, “Listen, I heard everything you said to Steven last night and I know I shouldn’t have and I was eavesdropping but I’m sorry it was by accident. And I know I don’t deserve any more of your time…I’ve already wasted a lot of it but just hear me out for ten minutes.”
“No.” I try to get out of his grasp.
“Stop fighting and give me ten minutes.”
“No way.”
“Nine then.”
“Five.”
“Eight and a half.”
“Six.”
“Seven.”
I pause, knowing that he won’t let me go anywhere before I hear him out.
“You don’t deserve seven seconds, let alone seven minutes of my time.”
“How about seven words then?”
I laugh. “I’d like to see you try.”
“I am falling in love with you.”
I blink up at him. Either I am still sleeping or I must have not heard him correctly because there is no way Conrad Fisher just admitted that he is falling in love with me.
Absolutely no fucking way.
Right?
I squeeze my eyes shut as if that can erase the words from my memory.
"You're joking.
"I'm not."
"This is just another part of your game." I try to push him away, but he doesn't budge.
"It stopped being a game for me a long time ago."
"You're lying."
His brows pull together. "Ask me why I hate when people touch my bookshelf."
"Are you serious right now? What does that have to do with any of this?" I think back to his bookshelf he won’t let any of the others go near but loves to let me organise and re-organise each year.
"Because I did it for you."
"I'm sorry, what?"
"I read somewhere online that organising objects like books and things is good for people with anxiety, because then they can feel in control of something and know exactly what to expect especially if things are the same as they've predicted all the time. You love reading too, so I changed it. Bought all the books you like to read so that you’d stay and read with me more often. I forced everyone else out of my room and especially away from that bookshelf. All because I wanted to help you."
Emotions clog my throat, preventing my ability to reply.
What can I possibly say that could compare to that?
Conrad doesn't give me an option as he continues. "Want to know why I kept this plant you got me?" he says pointing to the small green cactus with “Don’t be a prick” written on the pot that we could see looking into his room from the hallway.
I nod.
"Because it was the first time someone got me a present that made me laugh."
If hearts could melt into puddles, mine would be liquified right about now.
I take a deep breath.
Remember what he did.
“Con that doesn't change anything you still ignored me for a whole year. Every time I tried to call you or text you, you’d just leave me on read or decline, and now you’re telling me you love me? Who does that?"
"Someone who doesn't understand the first thing about loving someone, but is willing to try if you give me a chance."
"You want me to give you a chance after everything? Do you think I'm stupid?"
He winces, and a bit of my anger fades away at his vulnerability.
"Intelligence has nothing to do with this."
"Easy for you to say when you're not the one who feels like a fool."
"Really? Because based on your reaction today, I'm feeling pretty damn foolish for ever admitting that I'm falling in love with you." He gets up off the floor, leaving me feeling chilled to the bone.
"Con..." I reach out, but he takes a step back.
My eyes sting from his rejection. It hurts.
“I’m not asking you to love me back. I don't expect that and I'm not sure if I ever will because I'm the furthest thing for lovable. I'm selfish, and rude, and don't know the first thing about being in a proper relationship with someone. But that doesn't mean I’m not willing to try for you if you let me."
How am I supposed to be angry at him when he thinks he is unlovable?
A pain rips through my chest at the thought of him talking about himself this way.
I get up off the floor and walk straight into his chest. His arms quickly wrap themselves around my waist, holding me even tighter.
"Just because you make selfish choices doesn't mean you're a selfish person. At least not completely."
This boy had been there for Belly, Steven, me and Jere for years without any kind of payback, especially when Susannah was going through her cancer and despite feeling an immense amount of pain himself, he shoved all his emotions aside so that he could be there for us. For me. If that isn't a selfless sacrifice, I don't know what is.
"Your logic is half-baked at best."
"So is yours, seeing as you called yourself unlovable."
His body tenses. "I'm stating facts."
"I don't know what bullshit your father told you over the years, but it's not true. Your brother loves you."
"He’s obligated to."
"No one is obligated to love someone else. Blood or not."
He takes a deep breath. "You're right."
I smile up at him. "I could get used to hearing those words."
He reaches up and cups my cheek. "Give me a chance and I'll tell you them every single day."
I sigh and look away. "I don't know.”
"Tell me what's stopping you."
"You don't do relationships."
“Good thing our feelings lead us here rather than our minds, and mine are willing to try then."
I avoid his penetrating gaze. "What if my feelings are telling me to run?”
“It's cute you think you can outrun me, but I'll give you a head start just to make things interesting." he smiles down at me.
"Do you always have an answer for everything?"
"Not for the one that matters most." The way he looks at me stirs up something deep inside of me.
Longing. I want to give him a chance, regardless of the potential fallout.
You might get hurt.
I might, but I might miss out on something special because I’m too afraid of the what ifs. I'm done being that person. Even if it means getting hurt, I'd rather try and fail than never try at all.
I stand on the tips of my toes and press my lips against his.
He holds me tight against his chest, as if he is afraid of letting me go.
I pull away, only to clasp onto his chin. "This could be a disaster, but I'm willing to try."
He shuts me up by pushing his lips against mine, sealing our new deal. The way he kisses me is different than any time before. He cups my face with the palms of his hands as his lips mold against mine, teasing me until I feel dizzy. His thumb brushes across my cheek back and forth, and heat rushes down my spine straight to my belly. He makes me feel cherished. Protected.
Loved in a way that makes me never want to come back down to reality.
I could spend forever being kissed like this and still feel like it isn't enough. While Conrad might not be the best with words, his kiss says it all.
He is falling in love with me. And I’m falling in love with him. No translation necessary.
going, going, gone - c.f
Tumblr media
summary: y/n’s the only person who can get conrad, and he realizes that maybe he’s been falling for the wrong conklin.
conrad fisher x conklin!reader
gif from @conradfiisher
a/n: this will likely have a part two, so it probably won’t end here!! no promises as to when pt 2 is out but it will be there eventually ;)) this is literally me wishing i could slap some sense into belly
part two
“hey,” y/n greets, stepping into the beach house and finding conrad unpacking.
“hi,” he smiles lightly. the past few months have been nearly impossible. trying to crack conrad open is like trying to break into a safe. it took y/n forever to be able to understand conrad, and now that she finally did, there was an undeniable spark. she could sense the tension in his mind, knowing that something had set him off. he looked like he just wanted to break down, but he didn’t want to. if he did, he doesn’t know how to put himself back together.
“you ok?” she asks, cautiously. he’s almost like a wild animal, get too close and he runs away. especially since susannah died, he hasn’t been able to find a connection like the one he had with his mother.
“fine,” he mumbles, folding a few blankets onto the couch and placing some pillows beside it.
“conrad, don’t play this game with me again,” y/n sighs, stepping closer to him. he pauses in his movements to look up at her, slapping one last piece of decor on the mantle. “can we at least talk about the exam?”
“i, um,” he stutters, unable to find the right words that have disappeared in his mind. it’s like he completely pushed out the exam, all the other events had forcefully taken the excitement from it. “i feel really good about it, but it’s just an exam.”
y/n can tell in his slumped stance that something is truly disturbing him. he looks broken, and whoever did it certainly failed to put the pieces back together. it appears that they didn’t even try. “talk to me, conrad. please?”
he stops, breaking eye contact. he can’t look at her while he tells her because she can’t see his face when he says it. he doesn’t want y/n to see him crack under the pressure again.
“jeremiah and belly were making out on my car when i came out of testing. i walked out and there they were.”
“what?” y/n spits out, thinking about everything belly had told her before. “i thought she said she moved on-“
“yeah, i did, too,” his voice breaks, still avoiding any looks to y/n. if y/n sees him falling apart over belly, y/n would probably say something. the last thing conrad wants is for belly to know the affect this had on him.
“conrad, you know you can talk to me, right?” she steps closer, wanting to reach out her hand to him but knowing he probably doesn’t want it. he wants belly’s. “anything you say to me won’t get back to her.”
he slightly turns, finally letting his eyes wander up y/n’s body until they meet hers. he’s always found a trust in y/n. she’s been there since they were little kids, but it’s always felt different. there was an innocence to her, she felt like home and he could always run back to her if he needed her. he wouldn’t be able to handle it if he ruined that.
“i’m just so tired, y/n. it’s just one step forward and two steps back. i thought we could finally be over this, but they both just stabbed me in the back. on my car, during my test, in my hoodie. my mom always said belly was destined for me, but it just feels like jere took that.”
y/n can feel the hurt as well as see it on conrad’s face. she’s able to read him so well now that he’s not afraid to open up. she feels like they’ve gotten through a door, a point where they can share secrets and find a safety net in the other. “belly doesn’t deserve you, conrad. she’s not as mature as you, and you can thrive without her, i swear.”
“i’ll be ok, i just need a break from all this shit,” he groans, allowing y/n to finally walk up to him and hold his hand. “i don’t know if we can go back to the way things were after this.”
“i know i can’t change what happened, but i need you to understand that you’re not alone. at this point, you come first to me.” he nods, and y/n can see the sunrise in his face a bit more, but his mind is still covered with darkness. “if you need anything, please call me or come see me, ok?”
“deal,” he cracks a little grin, making y/n smile a bit in return.
“take care of yourself, connie,” she says before opening the front door. she starts the long drive home knowing what’s waiting for her there.
she plants her stuff down on the counter, letting her body relax after the hours behind the wheel. she starts to clean up some of the mess that she left on the counter when she hears squeaky footsteps come down the stairs.
“hey, you’re back already?” belly says, lurking into the kitchen to lean against the frame. y/n doesn’t say anything, she just looks at her and continues to organize everything. “what’s wrong, why do you look like that?”
“honestly, belly, i’m just trying to figure out what to say to you.”
“what do you mean?” belly asks, trying to think about why her older sister could have a reason to be mad at her.
“i stopped at cousins on the way home,” y/n informs her, belly knowing exactly where she left conrad.
“y/n, you can’t be pissed off because of what he told you-“
“no, belly, i have every right to be pissed. i’m pissed for conrad. you left him in the dust and you have no shame about it.”
“it just happened, jeremiah and i. i never wanted to hurt conrad, but im in love!”
“yeah, you were also in love last week with conrad. and the week before with jeremiah. you need to move on from them, bell,” y/n sighs, allowing belly some time to build another response.
“who are you to even say that?”
“because i’ve been there for both of them! i was there for jeremiah when you wanted conrad. i’m there for conrad because you are playing with their hearts like they’re toys. i can tell your hearts not fully in it with jeremiah, but i’m not gonna let you destroy those boys even more.”
“how am i destroying them?”
“belly, wipe that innocence off your face. you’ve managed to rip apart the fisher brothers because you cannot pick which one you like more.”
“but-“
“no, belly! listen to me,” y/n cuts her off before she can try and make anything better. “you couldn’t even contain yourself at susannah’s funeral because you were too worried about conrad. i know we are all grieving, but you are acting like you’re more worried about which brother likes you more. it’s exhausting having to clean up the mess you make over and over again. you’re slowly ruining this bond for me, for steven, for mom! you know i love you more than words, but if you keep playing with their feelings, belly, this family is going to be destroyed.”
“y/n, susannah told me-“
“use susannah as an excuse one more fucking time, belly.” the room goes deadly silent, y/n sick of the excuses and victimized mentality of belly. when steven comes stepping quietly into the room, he ganders softly into the chaotic mess that has formed between his sisters. she swipes her keys back off the table, grabbing an extra bag out of the closet. “i’ll be back.”
“where are you going?” belly says, eyes full of tears from her fear of confrontation. her voice was shaky, and y/n could still feel a sting of guilt in her chest. she hated to build a bigger wall between everyone, but belly had to hear it.
“i’m going to look after conrad, because you failed to do it,” y/n ends their conversation, slamming the front door behind her and moving to the car. she left the house with a terrible tone, but someone else needed her more. belly had jeremiah, taylor, steven, laurel, anyone she wanted. conrad had y/n, and that became enough for him.
Favourite t-shirt - Jeremiah Fisher
Warnings: Language
AN: Based on the song 'Favourite t-shirt' by Jake Scott, recommended to me by my bestie @hiya-its-amber (I had to give you a shoutout I'm sorry)
Tumblr media
Jeremiah Fisher has had a crush on you for as long as he can remember. He doesn't know when it started, nor if it will ever end, but it's there like a burning fire in the back of his throat, a pounding in his heart and a screaming riot in his mind. He's played it cool so far, pretending that with every touch of your hand, his body doesn't burst into flame, but it's beginning to get to him. Especially with his brothers teasing and Stevens too. It was a joke, partly, but with every comment on how he acted around you, he came closer to confessing.
"Dude, you're so gooey over her, it's gross". Conrad brought it up once more, though he was heavily concentrated on the TV in front of him, intent on beating Steven at a game of call of duty. "It's literally hard to watch, you know she likes you too, right?" Jeremiah's stood in the kitchen with his eyes glued to the door in front of him, having just watched you leave. You'd come by to invite him to group hangout at the beach and had invited Conrad and Steven too, asking them to pass the offer over to Belly, but according to Steven inviting them had been an afterthought. An apparent cover-up for your feelings for Jeremiah.
"Dude we're best friends, why do you always have to bring this up?" He manages to pull his eyes from the space at which you'd once been, intent on convincing his brother that nothing was happening between the two of you.
"Dude, you will literally do anything she asks you to do" Conrad spares a glance at his brother, a grin on his face at the fact he still found himself lying through his teeth over his feelings for you. He grins wider when his brother makes another attempt at defending the so called platonic relationship.
"Because we're best friends, and best friends do anything for each other!" Of course, it was a lie, Jeremiah cared for you beyond that of friendship and his brother would always know as much. He knows well enough too that he's being too defensive for his argument to be at all convincing, but he can't stop himself. "She would do anything for me too, it's not one sided".
"Exactly," Steven cuts in, providing Jeremiah with his view of the situation "It's not one sided, you're both so stupidly fucking in love with each other and it's sickening" His eyes are on the game, and Jeremiah hates the odds of winning this argument, knowing that the two losers in front of him were right about one thing. He is in love with you. So stupidly fucking in love with you.
-
At the beach Jeremiah can't think straight. The hang out consisted of him, Conrad, Steven, Belly, and a few of your friends that had come to town for a visit. Jeremiah had been told their names and he believed they were something along the lines of Jane and Tyler, though, he couldn't be sure. He was so hopelessly focused on you; he couldn't pay mind to anything else. You were laughing, grinning at something Steven had said, and Jeremiah couldn't take his eyes off you. The night had fallen, stars shining in the now darkened sky, but he could have sworn that you lit up the beach. It was so cliché, but with every second he spent looking at you, he found himself convinced that you were the sun itself. If so, he was earth, hopelessly revolving around you.
He can't quite fathom how he came to be here with you, why you would want to be here with him in the first place. His best friend for reasons he couldn't comprehend. After much contemplation and much playing it cool, Jeremiah finds it in himself to put an arm around you, pulling you just that bit closer. It was a habit of his to do so, often paired with him whispering something stupid into your ear, though, tonight he can't think of a joke to share.
"Race you down to the water?" He mutters the words into your ear, watching as you scrunch your nose at him, considering the night air, the stars, and your friends.
"Always" Your lips brush against his ear as you speak, whispering your answer back before pushing yourself up, rushing to the shoreline. Jeremiah doesn't have time to think, quickly pulling his shirt over his head, throwing it onto the sand behind him as he races after you, hoping to beat you there. Of course, he doesn't, your head start enough for you to win, feet splashing in the shallows of the ocean as he reaches you. You're smiling wide, panting for breath as you laugh and the man Jeremiah can only guess is called Tyler, shouts something incomprehensible in your direction. All you do is wave back, Jeremiah kicking up the water at your feet.
"You won" He's out of breath, though it's not the fault of his running, but rather the way you look in the moonlight, which steals the air from his lungs.
"Maybe if you hadn't stopped to remove your shirt, you would have caught up" placing your hands on his chest you shove him backward, a grin plastered on your face. Jeremiah can barely keep it together at the feel of your hands on his skin, even more so at the fact the contact is lost so quickly, but he takes a step forward, recovering the space lost from your push.
"It's my favourite t-shirt, I didn't want it to get wet" the words sound stupid as they leave his lips and he curses himself for the way they sound, but you're unbothered by the statement.
"It was just a race to the water, we're not jumping in" the small laugh that escapes you brings an idea to mind, Jeremiah raising a brow.
"No" You know where this is going before he can say a word, trying to sidestep the boy, but he is on you in seconds, arms pulling you close and lifting you up. He'd tried to throw you over his shoulder, though you'd moved just in time to prevent being put in the compromising position, instead wrapping your legs tightly round Jeremiah’s waist, arms round his neck in an attempt to say, 'If I go down, you go down with me'.
However, it's not going to save you, because Jeremiah wouldn't mind a midnight swim, and he doesn't at all hate the way your arms feel wrapped around his neck. Having you this close to him is exhilarating, always has been and most likely, always will be.
"Jere, I'm not gonna let go so if you try and dump me into the waves, it won't work" You're clinging to him as he takes a step further into the ocean, trying to convince him not to drown you both.
"Who said I wanted you to let go?" Jeremiah lets the words slip, finding that he isn't afraid to say them. The sentence is pure truth hanging in the moonlit air, and all you do is slap his shoulder, before gripping him tightly again. "You're gonna get us both soaked Jere, not just me". He's halfway to the big waves now and you're kicking his back as best you can with your heel, doing your best to hold on while doing so.
"Well, sharing is caring" the words come out as a chuckle and you fake annoyance as you unwrap your legs from his waist, pushing at his shoulders with your hands in an attempt to escape your impending doom. But Jeremiah's got a hold of you and he's not letting go.
As he lifts you up, both your bodies are hit with the ice cold of a wave. It's a shock to the system, and you squeal at the contact of the water soaking through your clothes, laughing as you wrap your legs around him again in an attempt to climb away from the water.
"It's freezing what are you doing!" Your nails are practically digging into his shoulders as you speak, another wave shocking you into silence as you bury your head into the crook of Jeremiah's neck for protection from the salty spray.
"It's summer, and in summer we swim". As Jeremiah speaks, he turns his back to the next wave, blocking you from it as best he can.
"When the water isn't mind numbingly cold, we swim" You correct, the words a mumble against his shoulder. It's here that Jeremiah laughs, deciding that your now shivering figure, clung to him like a spider monkey, has had enough. He takes a few steps toward the shore, and you raise your head, glancing behind you.
"Oh, thank god, we're going back" a sigh of relief leaves your lips before you're pressing thankful, joke-filled, kisses to Jeremiah's neck and shoulders. It makes him nervous, how much he wants the contact of your lips on his skin to be more than friendly, and he finds himself holding you just that little bit tighter. Once you're out of the waves, you untangle yourself from his body, walking on your own two feet back toward the group of friends you had previously left behind for the waves.
"How was the water?" Steven shouts knowing full well that it wasn't a pleasant experience, having watched your reaction to the icy waves from the sand with the rest of the group. All you do is poke your tongue out at him, a childlike response, before moving to sit with your out of town friends. Jeremiah, though he would love nothing more than to place himself by your side, moves to flop beside his brother a few feet away.
"You two are practically a couple, minus the kissing" Conrad follows his brothers gaze as he speaks, his eyes landing on you.
"She was kissing me before" Jeremiah's words are barely a mumble but Conrad hears them, sitting up straighter as his eyes swing to his brother. Before he can say anything, make a comment, or scream I told you so, Jeremiah shakes his head "Not like that, I told you we're friends".
"So, you kiss in a friend way?" Conrad's tone is teasing wanting more than anything to label his brother as a friends with benefits kind of guy. There is a grin on his face, though Jeremiah holds a lack of one.
"No, she was kissing my neck, in the joke kind of way when we were in the ocean before" He spares a glance to the waves, now left behind for refuge of the golden sand. He could picture himself standing in them now, letting what had played out minutes before roll through his mind like a film. Your legs around his waist, arms around his neck, lips on his skin.
"Kissing your neck in the joke kind of way? I'm sorry bro, I don't follow" Conrad doesn't know if he should look to his brother or to you, the girl that destroys Jeremiah's train of thought.
"It made me nervous man" Jeremiah lets the words slip before he can stop himself, Conrad meeting his eyes as he turns his gaze from the water. He wants to say something else but can't find the words to explain what he thinks he needs to, so Conrad finds them for him.
"You want to kiss her in the not a joke kind of way. You want it to be real" this time his words aren't teasing, something like understanding hanging between, Conrad's eyes shifting to Belly for the shortest of moments. He snaps himself out of it quickly enough, nudging his brother’s side with his elbow. "Here comes your girl".
He was right, you making your way over to the two boys, Jeremiah's shirt in hand. Once close enough, you threw the article of clothing at him, it smacking Jeremiah in the face as it landed in his grasp. "What are you two gossiping about?" You squat down in front of them, hands in the sand to stop yourself from tumbling over. Positioned like a frog or someone trying to imitate the pose of spiderman, you smile wide, though, there was question behind your eyes.
"That's a secret" Conrad jokes prodding you in the arm just hard enough for you to flop backward into the sand.
"A secret that can't be shared with me?" You look to Jeremiah now, wanting him to let you in on the conversation. After a moment you glance back to Conrad and gasp.
"You were gossiping about me, weren't you?" you shuffle onto your knees "I hope it's only good things".
"Not everything is about you Y/N" Conrad pushes you back again, your friendship having always consisted of playful snarky comments.
"You're right Connie, your crush on Belly has nothing to do with me". With a grin you lean forward, place a hand on Jeremiah's shoulder and use it to push yourself up from the ground. Jeremiah has the temptation then to pull you back down, watch as you collapse on top of him in a fit of laughs. He wants you close, but he lets you walk away. Instantly he regrets it. Pulling his shirt back over his head, eyes locking with yours as you look over your shoulder, he can't help himself. He goes after you, abandoning Conrad in the sand.
"Hey" Jeremiah comes up behind you, pulling you into him. Your clothes still wet from your run into the waves, your body sticks just slightly to his own.
"Hey, gossiper" his arms wrapped around you and your back against his chest, you can feel his heart beating in his chest, matching the beat of your own. "You out of breath hot shot?" You tilt your head back as far as it will go to see the face of the boy holding you, a grin on your lips.
"No" He wrinkles his nose at you, arms squeezing just that bit tighter.
"Well, I can feel your heart trying to punch its way from your chest" You manage to turn yourself in his hold, Jeremiah's heart jumping to his throat as you slip your hands under his shirt, placing them on his chest. "Holy shit Jere, are you having a heart attack?".
He lets himself laugh, the action no doubt rippling through your hands as he does so. "No, I'm fine". In truth his mind was spinning, making wild cries of 'Kiss her you fool!' as you stare up at him, a sight for sore eyes.
"Jere," You remove one hand from his chest to grab his own, pulling it up and pressing it upon the place where his heart should be. "Your heartbeat is crazy".
"Maybe I'm just crazy about you" there is confidence in his statement and even so, you can't help but snort at the words.
"That was so cheesy Jere" You pull your hands out from under his shirt, tapping him lightly on the shoulder. "Seriously though, you okay?" Your voice is gentle, genuine, and it takes everything Jeremiah has not to kiss you right there. He thinks about it, his mind swimming in that singular thought, pressing his lips to yours and seeing what would happen. Would kiss him back, and if you did what would it feel like? He thought about your hands in his hair, and his own tangled in yours, kissing you passionately and endlessly in front of stupid Tyler and Jane. He realises soon that he's zoned out, not at all helping him to convince you that he is in fact okay as you pull him back to reality. "Hey, Jere you there?" Your hands are back on his chest over his shirt, worried eyes burning into him as you wait for a response. He blinks, once, twice, until finally he's back with you, out of his fantasy.
"Yeah, I'm cool, I'm fine" In truth he's still distracted by the thought of what would happen if he just closed the gap between you, if he just brought you that little bit closer.
"You sure?" You're genuinely concerned, hands moving up to cup his face and Jeremiah finds himself wanting to stay like this forever, just you and him together on the sand. "Yeah, I'm great". He pulls you in for a hug, head resting in the wonderful space between your neck and shoulder. He's perfectly fine just like this, standing here with you. He's never been better if he's honest and he only wishes he would have the courage to say everything he's thinking. Maybe he will.
You pull apart only when you hear the calling of Jane, alerting you that her and Tyler are heading back to town, ready to get some rest. You spare a second with Jeremiah, brushing his cheek with your thumb before you rush back toward your friend, pulling her into the embrace he had been consumed in moments ago. He watches you hug Tyler too, and there is something in his chest that tightens. He hates himself for it because of course you're going to show affection for other people, but tonight Jeremiah can't help wanting it all to himself.
Conrad appears beside him, placing a hand on his shoulder as you both observe the scene. "She likes you, not him". It's a kind gesture from his brother, who had been drowning in bad moods over the past couple of weeks and he's grateful that someone has faith in what you feel for him.
Jeremiah watches as you return, Steven at your side just as Conrad is at his. "I'm gonna head back to the house, you guys coming?" Steven's voice is implying something, though, Jeremiah can't pinpoint it until Conrad jumps in. "Yeah, I'm gonna head up too" His eyes flick to Jeremiah as he speaks, "You two should have some fun, bond or something" It's a gesture so obvious that it's painful and Jeremiah winces at the words, wishing he could push them back into his brother’s mouth. Before he can say anything though, Steven is racing up the sand, Conrad following in a slow jog, not so enthusiastic.
"What are those two up too?" You mutter the words, but Jeremiah hears you fine, wanting to kiss the amused grin that lingers on your lips. He watches you shiver too, a sliver of guilt worming into his heart at the memory of carrying you into the frigid waves.
"Are you cold?" His voice soft as he speaks, you shift your eyes to him, sucking in a breath. "A little, yeah".
Jeremiah must look like a fool, but in the next moment he's pulling his shirt over his head, turning it back in the right way and passing it to you without a second thought. It wouldn't do much, but it was better than nothing at all.
"Jere, you need this" You're holding it out to him as you speak, the fabric gripped tightly in your hand. Jeremiah loves you for it, loves you for everything you do, as he pushes the shirt back your way.
"I walk around without a shirt all the time, I'm sure I can go without it" You chuckle at that, nodding with a smile and Jeremiah thinks it's a blessing to make you do so. "Put it on". He waves a hand toward the shirt, and you shake your head still, eyeing him closely despite yourself. "You're distracting when you're shirtless, you put it on" You push the shirt back in his direction, Jeremiah raising a brow at the statement, heart skipping like a broken record. "Well, you're distracting fully clothed, so I guess we'll both struggle tonight".
Taking the shirt from your hands he moves forward, "Arms up". You poke your tongue out at him, though do as you're told, raising your arms as he pushes the shirt over your body. When he steps back, the wind is knocked out of him. He watches as you twirl, an unstoppable grin crawling onto his lips at the sight of you.
"How do I look?" You're grinning back at him with everything you have, and he finds it in himself step forward again, taking your hands in his own. "You look so good, it hurts".
The shirt is far too big for you, but you don't seem to mind, pulling your hands from his to curtsey in the article of clothing and twirl once more, as if you were wearing a dress. He loves it and hopes that you forget to take it off at the end of the night, just so he can see you again in the morning when you come to return it to him.
"Dance with me Jeremiah Fisher" you're already spinning again, and a laugh escapes him as he watches you, joining you within seconds to twirl you himself, like prince and princess in a fairy-tale. There wasn't any music, save for the beat of the waves against the sand, but it didn't really matter, the dance more continuous twirls and jumping, accompanied by the laughs shared between you both, than anything proper. With each second that passed Jeremiah found himself falling harder, as if he hadn't fallen as far as he could for you already, and the courage he had been long awaiting seemed to find itself in his heart. With one final twirl he pulled you in close, hands holding yours.
"I really like your shirt" the words are a whisper out of your smiling lips, "I understand why it's your favourite".
There are so many things Jeremiah could say, wants to say, but instead he settles for the simplest thing he can manage. "It looks better on you". He watches as you bite the inside of your cheek, one side of your mouth quirked up in a mostly concealed smile. You let go of his hands, a part of him freezing at the thought he'd gone too far, before you move your arms over his shoulders, fingers playing with the hair at the nape of his neck. He gets the hint and feels happier than ever. Slowly he moves his arms around your waist, and you laugh at the close proximity at which you were to each other. It was certainly an indicator to any passer-by on this night, that you were something more than friends.
"Can you kiss me already?" Your smile is infectious, a grin from ear to ear that makes Jeremiah chuckle before he does as he's told. The kiss was slow, the feeling of your lips on his is unlike anything he thought it would be, and he finds himself bringing you closer, an almost impossible task. You're kissing him back and he loves it, the act switching from long passionate kisses to short pecks between breaths for air. You certainly didn't feel cold anymore, the warmth of Jeremiah's body flush against yours more than enough to frighten away any chills the previous midnight swim had caused. He's determined to trace the shape of your lips until the feeling is burned into memory, but sadly oxygen is something one needs to survive, the need to officially part from each other nessacary after many, many minutes.
The first words spoken after the fact come from you, panting for breath "This is a really cool t-shirt". The sentence sends you both into breathless laughter, Jeremiah unable to stop himself from sneaking continuous pecks to your lips between chuckles.
"You want me to give you a ride home?" It's a stupid question, only asked for the sake of conversation, the both of you knowing well enough that Jeremiah would give you a ride regardless of your answer, but all you do is nod lips upturned in a smile he wants to kiss onto his own. Instead, Jeremiah nods in the direction of the car, arm making its way over your shoulders. "C'mon".
-
The drive to your place is filled with that of you scolding Jeremiah, screeching at him to keep his eyes on the road. Every second he gets, he glances your way, taking in everything that you are, and everything he never wants to forget. Each time you caught him, eyes locking with yours, you would swat at him gently, pointing toward the windshield "Eyes up front Jere, you're gonna get us killed".
It goes on like this until he finally pulls into your drive, dreading the last moments he's to share with you for the night, wishing they could be longer. As he puts the Jeep in park however, you're the one looking at him, eyes scanning his features with uncertainty as you fumble to undo your seatbelt. "I'll see you tomorrow?" The words come as a question and Jeremiah nods "Yeah, of course".
He's smiling, hoping that you will too and soon you do, leaning over to kiss him one last time before you leave. He's glad for the goodbye, taking his time to hug you tightly before you open the passenger side door, exiting the vehicle.
You wave as you close it, walking a few steps up your drive before you stop. Jeremiah waits, curious as to what you were doing, before you turn back to the car, walking fast round to the driver’s side window. In seconds you're leaning in, kissing him once more and it drives him crazy just how good it feels. The kiss is passionate, fast paced and soon you pull away, something of a shy grin on your lips. "Bye".
Jeremiah smiles back, a happy exhale escaping him. "Bye".
From here he watches you go, jogging back round the car and up your driveway, and no matter how hard he tries, he can't help but think about how good you look in his favourite t-shirt.
Conrad Fisher x Eldest Conklin Sibling Reader
Blurb | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2
~~~~~~~~~~
The first day always went the same. Unpack, swim, shower, nap, dinner. Sometimes the first bonfire of the season was the first day we got there, other times it was the next day. This year it was the first. So today’s order was, unpack, swim, shower, nap, dinner, get ready, party.
We all gathered around the table for dinner in our usual spots. My Mom, Belly, and me on one side,  Steven and Jere across from us, then Conrad on the end next to me, and Sussanah on the end next to my Mom. The spots never changed over the years, unless we had guests to squeeze in somewhere. The other thing that never changed was the food. Susannah was an amazing cook. She had taught me to cook over the years. I had spent many hours by her side being her ‘little sous chef’ as she called me. This summer she told me she would show me her old college food recipe hacks.
I picked my head up from my plate when I heard Jeremiah’s voice, “So Y/n/n when do you leave for school? Do they have the swim team go early?”
I nodded, quickly swallowing my food so I could answer, “Yeah I have to go early, It's not too bad though only 2 weeks before the regular move-in date. I leave on August 5th.”
Susannah spoke next, “We’re so proud of you, our little fish.” Everyone chuckled at the nickname, ‘little fish’. Susannah had been calling me that for years.
“So what about you man when do you leave for training camp?” Steven asked Conrad, only he wasn’t the one who answered. Jeremiah did.
“He uh quit football.” Silenced stretched over the table. He what? I stared at him in disbelief, but in my heart, a part of me felt relieved for him. Being a student athlete isn’t easy and I knew Conrad only did football for his father. Sure he still loved the sport, but not enough.
“What you quit? Why man, I would’ve killed to play college ball?” Steven asked Conrad but again he didn't respond, his mother answered this time.
“He can always change his mind.” That made Conrad speak up, getting defensive towards his mother in a way I didn't usually see from him.
“I’m not gonna change my mind, I was just gonna sit on the bench all season anyway.” I sat quietly. I didn’t know what to say. Conrad and I bonded over our athleticism over the years, it felt weird to think we didn’t share that similarity anymore.
I hadn't realized I was staring at him until he looked back at me, our eyes locked and yet I still couldn't move. You'd think it'd be instinct to look away but as he came into focus, we just stared. I tried my best to read him to understand why he might do that, Why would he quit? I knew he didn't love it but he had gone this far with it, What made him change his mind?
There was something unreadable in his expression I didn't think it was regret or nostalgia or sadness or anger but instead some combination of all of it. I wondered why. He looked away first turning his attention to his plate as he picked at the food in front of him. I didn't push him on it, I wasn't sure I'd push him on it later either. I’m sure he had a reason, maybe it’d be best if I just let him tell me if he wanted.
The rest of dinner continued on like normal on the first night. Catching up, making jokes, and just being happy to be in each other's presence again. Everyone went their separate ways to get ready for the bonfire, and Belly and the moms stayed downstairs preparing for their movie night. Their tradition started a few years ago when Belly was 11, almost 12. That was the first year we went to a bonfire, Conrad and I were 14, and Jeremiah and Steven were 13. The bonfires were different then, we were with the younger crowd still unmixed from the older kids.  It was in the backyard of the house owned by a kid Jeremiah and Conrad knew from sailing camp. Belly was so upset she couldn't come with us. She was too young and we didn't want to have to watch out for her the whole night, or entertain her for that matter. I love my sister and she's gotten a lot better over the years but she loves attention, even though she won't admit it. Having her come meant that I would have to keep her by my side the whole night, that I couldn't mingle with new kids and make new friends. The moms promised to hang out with her that night. They went to the drugstore in town and bought a bunch of candy. Susannah made brownies and they watched a movie, a PG-13 movie which Belly thought was awesome at the time.
I didn't do too much to get ready for the bonfire, it wasn't anything new, but I still like to look a little bit nice. It was the first time I was seeing everybody for the season after all. My hair was down, air-dried from the shower I took earlier so it had a natural wave to it. A little concealer under my eyes, some mascara, tinted lip balm, and that was that. I put on a tank top and some jean shorts with my navy Cousins Beach sweatshirt on top. It tended to get a little bit chilly on the beach at night. I looked at myself in the mirror, my eyes catching on the shimmer coming from my ears. My pearl earrings, Susannah's pearl earrings. She gave them to me for my 16th birthday just like her mother did and I've treasured them every day since.
I had to shoo the thought away as I felt myself getting choked up. I exited my room and went down the stairs, slipping on my very worn-in black Converse by the door.  I heard stories of people in college having a designated pair of shoes they called their ‘frat shoes’. This pair of black Converse was that for me over the summer.  They had been covered in sand, soaked from water, and scuffed with dirt, more times than I could count.
As I finished tying my last lace, the boys walked down the stairs. I sat up, shoes now tied, and patted my knees, “You guys ready to go?”
“Yep let's do this we're taking my car. Y/N you promised to be DD for the night right? Don’t worry though I won’t drink too much anyway, wouldn't want to be hungover for my first day of duty, right Y/ N?” Jeremiah answered.
I laughed, “No Jere, you definitely shouldn't be hungover. Wouldn't look good for me either after I vouched for you to get this job. But yes I’ll be DD.” He laughed with me throwing his arm over my shoulder as we walked to the car. Steven called shotgun which left me and Conrad to sit together in the back. I hated to admit it to myself but he looked good. How someone could pull off a gray hoodie that well I didn't know, but he pulled off a gray hoodie and jeans better than I'd seen ever before.
The drive was silent in terms of conversation but in the front seat, Jeremiah and Steven were singing their hearts out to Steven's ‘pregame’ playlist off Spotify. I kept my gaze out the window. Partly because I was still taking in the beauty of Cousins, partly because I could look at him. He looked too good and I always had to distance myself from Conrad before parties. I never knew how they’d play out with him. Sometimes he’d just stick close to us, the crew, and have a super fun night hanging out. Usually, that’s what he did when I was at the party with the guys but I’d been told the stories of his playboy party actions when I wasn’t there, and last summer I had gotten a glimpse of it. A girl named Nicole had come up to him and started chatting with him. Within seconds she was quite touchy-feely. Her hand was on his chest or upper arm, even playing with his hair every once in a while. I had whispered into Jere’s ear who was between me and the horny fest, “Who’s that?”
Jere took a quick glance over his shoulder and then whispered back, “Nicole, she and Conrad hook up every once in a while.”
I furrowed my brows, “I’ve literally never seen her before.”
“They met at a party last summer when you had left for swim camp, I think her family like only comes out for August.”
I swallowed the information and then excused myself to get a drink. I stole a beer from the kid's fridge and walked back feeling a little bit better now that I had a drink in my hand. But when I looked up to find Nicole on her tiptoes kissing Conrad against the wall, the power of the drink in my hand ceased. I turned back to the kitchen, leaning against the counter by myself for a few minutes. I had my focus down on my hands when I suddenly looked up at the sound of the refrigerator doors flying open. It was her. She was seemingly grabbing a beer from the fridge the same way I had been just a second ago. I expected her to walk back out to Connie, but instead, she stationed herself on the counter, so I took that as my sign to walk back. It was the first, and only time since I had seen Conrad's fuck-boy behavior, but the stories continued, and I never let myself feel unprepared for the chance I might see it again.
Now sitting in the car with him I did just that as I watched the houses go by. The streets are littered with beautiful bloomed hydrangeas. Suddenly, my hair was pushed behind my ear. I turned my head as his hand draped its way down from my ear to the ends of my hair. His face was soft but I could see the dimples around his smile starting to crease. I shifted in my seat, nervous with his attention on me.
“W-what are you doing?” I spoke lowly. Not that it mattered, Jere and Steven had no chance of hearing over our screaming.
“You’re hiding.” It wasn’t a question, it was a statement. And it left me speechless. “Your hair is always so soft, you’d think after years of chlorine that wouldn’t be the case.”
That eased the tension a little, as the corner of my mouth turned up. “Well, that's because I wear one of those swim caps.”
He laughed, “I’d pay to have a picture of that.”
I laughed with him, “Don’t say that to my mom 'cause she’d easily take your money for an exchange.”
“Let's go!” Jeremiah shouted, exiting the car along with my brother. I hadn't realized we had stopped.
I looked over my shoulder to see Conrad hadn’t moved. His eyes looked at me like he was observing my soul. I held my breath. As if not breathing would help ease the bubbles floating around in my chest.
I couldn’t bear it.
With an awkward laugh, I scooted out of the car and jogged over to Jere and Steven. I didn’t want to walk down alone. I knew the boys wouldn’t stay by my side the whole night, they’d go do other things within the first hour, but I liked to hold onto them for as long as I could. I didn’t mind the girls I’d met with the guys here over the years, but we were never that close. Nicole, Dara, Gigi, Marisa, and Shayla, we’d all lose contact over the school year. I also knew some people who weren’t from that crew. Some of them I knew from the swim club I used to do at the Country Club when I was little under the Fisher’s name. I wasn’t exactly supposed to be in the club seeing as I wasn’t truly a member but Susannah had a way of getting people to do what she wanted. Kindness can be blinding. The club was mostly made up of little boys, there were only 3 of us girls, Sydney, Ally, and me. Sydney was a nice girl. She was super smart, and ambitous, she’s set to start at Princeton for business in the Fall. Ally, I remained better friends with as we grew up. She was a dedicated swimmer like me so we even ran into each other sometimes during the school year at competitions. Ally was a total sweetheart, but she liked to have fun. She was easy to hang out with, she understood. I hoped they were here, I had forgotten to text them when I got to Cousins.
The fire wasn’t too crazy, they had to be careful not to draw too much attention from the cops. A big crowd of people had already formed though and it was only 9:30. I grabbed a cola from the cooler as I said hello to everyone coming up to us. Chit-chat was made with numerous people, and I couldn’t help but feel these conversations were really competitions for these kids. It was like every comment had to be a one-up to the one previous.
It was around 10:30 when a hand plopped down on my shoulder abruptly.  I assumed it was one of the guys but then he came into my eyeline, Peter Millington.
“Yooo Y/N what's good?” He said a little slurred. As he moved to stand in front of me his hand dropped from my shoulder.
“Hey Peter,” I laughed. Peter was a good guy, he was flirty but it was harmless. Annoying, but harmless. I met him at the swim club when we were 10.
“So miss big shot where you heading this fall?  I’m sure schools across the country were practically begging outside your front door!”
I laughed, “I won’t deny that, but I’m actually not going far. I’m gonna be going to Harvard.” His mouth hung open.
“No shit.”
“Yes, shit. How about you, still swimming?”
He shook his head, “Nah nah, I’m trying to be a sports agent, I’ll be going to Penn State.”
“That’s great, congrats.” I smiled at him.
He pointed at me a big smirk spreading across his face, “Yeah so you better remember me when you go all famous.” He finished his statement by slightly hitting the side of my arm.
“You got it Pete, I won’t forget you-”
“Belly what the fuck!” My head snapped and my jaw dropped. I took off over to them. I sort of abandoned Pete but eh, he’ll be fine.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Steven yelled.
I smacked his shoulder once I had run up to them. “Stop yelling! You’re making a scene!” I whisper-shouted at him.
Then I turned my attention to my baby sister. My baby sister, who wasn’t supposed to be here. My baby sister, who was just talking to a man 5 years older than her. My baby sister, who chose to wear a tiny skin-tight pink mini dress. My clueless, trouble-causing, baby sister.
“What are you doing here?” I asked her as calmly as I could.
“What I can’t go to a party?” She bit back defensively.
Excuse me? She didn’t get to give me shit for being concerned when she's the one who showed up out of the blue. I scoffed, “Did I say that?”
“What are you even wearing Belly we are on the beach why would you-“
“Steven. Knock it off. Go hang out with Shayla.” This was getting too aggravating. Steven was instigating too much, he must have already pissed Belly off by the time I ran up and now I had to deal with it.
“Did Taylor tell you to wear that or something?” I asked Belly, trying my best to figure out what was going on without having to have an argument in the middle of a party.
“Why can’t I just dress nicely without being questioned?” Why the hell was she being so defensive?
 “Again did I say that?” I couldn’t hold back the bite to my tone.
She rolled her eyes before looking at me. But then her gaze sharply caught something over my shoulder. I turned to look. Jeremiah. Drunk off his ass. Standing next to the fire trying to strip and go skinny dipping. He had already stripped off his sweatshirt, shirt, shoes, and socks.
“Great.” I scoffed, running over to my now 2nd problem of the night.
When he saw me running over he smiled brightly, “Y/N! We are going swimming come on! OH MY GOSH Belly! You’re here! You come too!”
Belly laughed beside me and I would’ve thrown a dirty look her way if I had the energy to spare.
“No. No one is going swimming. It’s pitch black, the rip currents are crazy, and you are wasted. That’s all recipe for disaster.” I said authoritatively.
Jeremiah pouted. “Please?”
“No. Now put your clothes on.”
“Booooo.” Was he serious? He swayed as he re-dressed, his shirt blocking his vision. Good god.
“And get rid of the drink Jere, You’ve had enough.”
“Ughhh fine party pooper.” Before I could stop him he threw his drink into the fire.
“Jere-” The fire grew, a blaze lighting the beach. Shouts were heard as other drunk idiots followed Jeremiah’s lead and fueled the fire. “I can’t with this, Jere hang out with Belly.”
He smiled at that, “Alright come here belly button sit with me by the fire.” She giggled and obliged.
I took a deep breath, my feet taking me to the shoreline without even thinking. I needed to calm down. The chaos was overwhelming. I sat down on the sand a few feet away from where the water reached. The breeze flowed against me and I felt my mind begin to ease. This. This is why I always loved Cousins. I will never feel as at peace as I do when I’m next to the ocean. Water just calmed me down. I was the little fish.
I hoped that would never change. I hoped I would always be the little fish, no matter how big or how small the pond. No matter what happened down the line, the peace I felt by the water would never be disturbed. I’d always be, as Susannah so deemed me, a little fish.
I felt a plop next to me in the sand. I knew who it was without even looking, I could simply feel his energy. It was Conrad. He looked out on the water as he placed whatever drink he had in his hand down next to him. I kept my gaze out on the water as well. It felt good to just sit with somebody. With him.
“So you go around telling everybody you’re going to Harvard?” He said, slight humor in his tone.
I sighed, “I mean only when anyone asked.”
“No shouting from the rooftops?”
“No shouting from the rooftops. I’m not a big bragger.” I snickered, and so did he.
“You? Please! You have always been humble but you never shied away from sharing your accomplishments. You should be proud of yourself, it’s a big deal.” I just shrugged in response.
“I’m proud of you.” I looked at him then. His eyes were full of sincerity. I don’t think he knew how much that meant to hear. I caught his eyes flicking to my lips.
Wait what-
He was looking at my lips and when he looked back up his eyes shone with vulnerability. I couldn’t help myself when my eyes dipped down to look at his. I imagined what it’d be like to kiss him. His soft pillowy lips moving against my own. I wondered where he’d put his hands. He seemed like the type of guy to cup the back of your head. I’d feel the weight of his hand as he pulled me into him like he was desperate for our connection. Maybe one hand would fall to my hips or my thigh, acting like an anchor.
I couldn’t let my mind wander too far. Lord knows where that would lead. When our eyes met the tension was unmistakable. I couldn’t. I couldn’t let myself fall into him. I’d never stand back up.
“Stella? Alright, thanks man!”
Spell broken. Peter had just snatched Conrad’s beer from its spot between us and was taking a big slug of it.
“Pete what the hell?” I said, standing up from my seat on the sand.
“Dude give me my beer back.” Conrad stood up as well, Pete was standing between us.
“Whaaaat? You weren’t even drinking it man! It was just- you know just sitting there and all the- all the other Stella’s are gone.” He was plastered. I felt my chest sink. This isn’t gonna go well.
“I don’t give a fuck if there aren’t any left, that one is mine now give it back to me.” Conrad defended.
“Connie come on-”
“It’s just a beer man.” Pete turned to face primarily towards Conrad.
“Exactly, so give me my beer back and get yourself your own.”
“No.”
“Pete come on you definitely don’t need another drink.” I approached him, going to put my hand down on his shoulder to try and calm him down. Then just as I did he rolled back his elbow saying,
“Oh fuck off.”
I fell to the ground. His elbow collided right with my ear and the side of my face. Well, that hurt like a bitch. I’ll have a black eye on my first day back to work. Awesome.
“Y/N-“
I kept my eyes clenched shut for a minute before I felt a hand come to my shoulder, it was Belly and Jeremiah helping me up. My ears rang for a minutes before clearing. I watched as Steven and Jere broke up the fight.
Conrad looked at me as Steven pulled him back. I shook my head and looked away. Actually, I looked right at the flashing blue and red lights now coming from the top of the dunes. Cops, awesome.
“Enough!” I snapped everyone out of it, “Let’s go! Come on!”
I grabbed Belly’s hand as we ran up to the car, glancing over my shoulder quickly to make sure the boys were behind us.
“Jere keys!” I caught the keys as he tossed them to me, unlocking the car doors. “In! Now!”
I started the car, a scowl on my face. My head felt like it was vibrating but it wasn’t like any of them could drive with their intoxication level. I couldn’t believe them. How on earth did they think it was appropriate to act like this?  I kept my eyes on the road, but I was sure they could feel the anger radiating off of me.
“Y/N look I-“ Steven started but I cut him off.
“I don’t wanna hear it.”
Then Jeremiah came in, “We didn’t mean to-“
“I said I don’t wanna hear it! Unless you want me to hit a drunk teenager stumbling home, you’ll shut up and listen to me! I’m distracted enough by the pinging in my head.”
They were silent after that.
I was mad and I had plenty of reason to be. I had been in this position with my sibling plenty of times, a few with Jeremiah, but never Conrad. I knew he started fights occasionally, but never with me around.
I pulled into the driveway and parked the car. Then I child-locked in all those mother fuckers. I unblocked my seatbelt and positioned myself to be able to see them all. Steven and Jere struggled to open the doors while Belly sat in the middle confused. To my surprise Conrad just sat in his seat, his focus down in his lap, he made no objections. Once the three backseat idiots figured it out they looked to me expectantly.
I raised my brows, “What you thought just cause I didn’t want you distracting me while driving you were gonna be off the hook?”
“Y/N what do you even care? You’re not our mom.” Belly said, rolling her eyes.
She only fueled my anger, “Yeah no shit I’m not 'cause Mom wouldn’t have put up with even an ounce of the crap you guys pulled tonight. Do you think I like playing mommy? Do you think I wouldn’t have rathered to enjoy the first night of my summer stress-free? You are lucky I’m a good sister, 'cause I could so easily walk inside and tell Mom everything that went down tonight. Then maybe you’d realize that having you deal with me instead of mom, is me being nice.”  I watched my sibling's attitudes deflate. Jeremiah on the other hand was sitting there trying and failing to hide the smirk from his face. “What’s so funny Jeremiah? Do you think I’m not talking to you too right now? All of you put me in bad positions tonight because of how you acted. ”
Jeremiah chimed in again, “We weren’t that bad.”
My jaw dropped, “Not that bad? Let’s see who should I start with. How about you Jeremiah, I stopped you from getting naked in front of every teenager in cousins, potentially drowning and killing yourself, and even after I did that you acted like an idiot! Throwing alcohol into the fire, you’re probably the reason the cops came! Oh and just the cherry on top, the fact that you’re wasted after promising me you wouldn’t be.” He was quiet now.
“Steven had to cause a whole scene, but I’m not even that mad at him because he was right to be questioning you Bells! How the hell did you even get there?”
She peeked up sheepishly, “I walked.”
“You walked? Belly do the Moms even know you came to the bonfire?”
“No, I snuck out.”  She spoke in a quiet tone.
“Jesus Bells! If you had just told me you wanted to come I would’ve vouched for you. For god sake, I would’ve given you a ride!” My head pounded. I rubbed my forehead trying to ease the pain, I needed some advil. “You guys can’t act like that. It’s dangerous, and quite frankly embarrassing. I’m just- I’m done dealing with it.” I took a breath and unlocked the doors, “Go inside guys. Go to sleep.” I sat forward with my head in my hands. I heard the doors open and close as they got out without a word.
Except he didn’t. I didn’t look over at him. I honestly didn’t know what to say to him. I didn’t know how I felt at the moment.
“Are you ok? Is your head alright?” He had worry in his voice and I couldn’t help but feel a flutter in my heart.
“I have a headache and I’ll probably wake up to a huge bruise on my cheek but I’m fine.”
“How come you’re not mad at me too?”
“I didn’t say I wasn’t mad at you.” I felt his eyes on me the whole time but mine stayed forward at the house.
“You didn’t yell at me like everyone else.”
“Because I didn’t know what to say to you not because I’m not mad at you.”
A beat passed. Just us sitting in the car before he spoke up again, “I’m so sorry you got hurt, Pete was plastered-“
“You could’ve just let him have the beer.”
“Y/N I wasn’t going to-“
“Look it’s been a long night, just- just go to bed Con.” I grabbed the keys and left the car. I hadn’t looked at him once and I didn’t look back at him.  I couldn’t. I don’t even think I was truly mad at him, I mean it was Pete’s fault, not his. I was more overwhelmed with tonight’s events and I didn’t have the energy to unpack anything right now. My head was pounding and I needed to lay down. Work would be a nightmare tomorrow morning.
I went straight into the shower when I got inside. I gave myself a quick rinse. Susannah always stoked our bathroom with luxurious bath products for me and Belly. But I know Steven liked it too.
I walked into my room and plopped right down onto my bed. Man, it was soft, and it only seemed softer after a hard night.
I went to grab my phone when I saw it. A water bottle, advil, an ice pack, and a cookie, sitting on my bedside table, and I most certainly didn’t put it there. I knew who did. I knew it was him, and I could feel myself smile a little. I felt myself forgive him, he was hard to stay mad at. He wouldn’t mention it, I probably wouldn’t either, but we knew that we knew. That was enough.
For now.
