snw2 #3.
BEST SNW EPISODE YET. Forever a favourite <3
Funny how most things I was imagining and thinking about and being like what IF were actually true lol so satisfying
this is such a loooooong post. I’m not kidding. I have a lot to say about... stuff lol (the episode was also long~ like 61 minutes) I will most likely bring some of these up again separately.
If you thought I was annoying prior to this episode airing, I’ll probably be more annoying from now on^^
so let’s start it with a complaint lol I hate the use of “socialist utopia” so much. I will always hate the word “socialist” because it just has negative connotations, call it social-democratic because that’s probably what you want anyway...
(and as a side note, if you’ve ever reblogged a trek edit with a hammer and a sickle AND A STAR maybe you should rethink that)
gotta take it as Pelia being extra sarcastic... and it doesn’t even fit with TOS... so unreliable narrator it is :P
(I also still dislike that M’Benga gave Spock his lute that he OWNED in Discovery and that he is only learning how to play it now......... it should be a part of his upbringing. I know I can make it as if M’Benga just reminded him of it and suggested he should practice more, or something, but I’ll have to keep seeing people saying how something that is a part of Vulcan culture was given to Spock by a non-Vulcan...)
ok done, the rest is all positive~
- you know, if M’Benga is this super martial art master idk why I can’t imagine McCoy also being good at fighting, since he can karate chop a man with one chop (see A Piece of the Action lol)
- the Enterprise halls are always so empty in this series...
- I really wanted Kirk to fight against Spock, and I got it - amazing. The moment when I realized, before seeing the episode, that the Federation doesn’t exist, because of U.E.F. Enterprise, I was like what if Earth fights against Vulcans? And they do.
It’s kind of (like in the mirror verse tbh) ??? how Spock exists but whatever, Amanda could be captured by Vulcans or something... but I never want them to canonize that humans and Vulcans can have babies just by having sex. Spock was born because of science.
- “Maybe in some other lifetime, Captain Spock.” LMAO Kirk’s like I don’t care, bye.
(can this be the only Kirk and Spock interaction in this season? Is that too much to ask? Don’t make them meet too soon.... I guess they’ll meet in that Uhura episode but just make it like, this is Kirk, this is Spock. bye)
- Kirk is so shouty lol I love it (I don’t want Lieutenant Kirk to be like that, but it fits this one, but it’s also a bit like snw finale Kirk after he went face to face with Pike after Farragut was destroyed (so I guess it might probably stay for whenever he’s angry))
Kirk: New York
La’an: ??? This is Toronto
love
Also thank you so much for not travelling back to the US~
“I was born in space on the USS Iowa.” I was so right. He is from space and never visited Earth lol
USS Iowa though (I guess they might have ships named after each former US state? I hope they also have ships for other countries.... but at least it isn’t USS Kelvin, that’d be just stupid.)
Love the confirmation that Canada also doesn’t exist in the Trek time (”used to be called Canada”)
- you know, La’an wasn’t born on Earth either, but it seems like she visited Canada before
- LOVE how they have the same style and taste <3
- La’an sees Kirk without a shirt and falls in love lmao
- They did steal the clothes. Called it lol
I love how equal it is, it’s something that isn’t common in TOS, because Spock just keeps following most of the time, so it’s refreshing seeing a Kirk that isn’t in charge all the time
love he’s using this gesticulation even though this Kirk is less... annoyed isn’t the right word, but I’m blanking (even though there was a moment at the beginning where he was annoyed).
- you know, the reason why La’an did warm up to Kirk (apart from being attracted to him physically, I guess) is that Kirk pesters her and slowly breaks her guards. On the Enterprise, no one is repeatedly reaching out to La’an. She’s this scary, cold chief of security officer, and none of them tries to befriend her. M’Benga tries, but he isn’t persistent. Una is like a big sister, but because Una herself holds back, she gives La’an her space too. La’an really appreciated when everyone came for her in episode 1, she was looking forward to coming back with them, but there’s no personal and special connection between her and anyone else on the crew, and she wants that.
(and like when she was on the bridge of the alternate Enterprise, she didn’t want to talk in front of Ortegas and Uhura, two people she’s worked with for almost a year... she chose a stranger instead)
And Kirk is there and isn’t scared of her, and isn’t easy to brush off and push away with how La’an talks, and he doesn’t leave the first moment he can.
Like Kirk, La’an is also mission driven and sometimes the focus on the job can drive other people away, but not Kirk (who’s just chilling at this 15 minutes mark lol)
You know, even in the prime timeline Kirk would be so good for La’an. Kirk has a lot of trauma - Tarsus IV, Farragut - but he isn’t bitter and closed off. La’an needs someone like that to show her that her past doesn’t define her, that you can still smile and live (rather than just survive) even when your past is dark. There really isn’t anyone like that on the Enterprise. Una has similar problems like La’an, maybe she even told La’an to never show weaknesses and real her like she told Spock, but I feel like Una might shake it all off now when she told her truth, but she isn’t who can help La’an to come out of her shell.
(but I guess La’an’s attraction for Kirk is the factor too lol) Also just a note, she felt pulled towards Kirk even before she realized that he doesn’t know who she is.
ETA (added a few days later): her experience with Kirk will most likely allow La’an to see that others do want to befriend her, but she is pushing them away. She needs to let them in.
- ah so “we’re explorers” from the trailer became “you could be an explorer” in the episode (that’s why I typically say that trailers, but also interviews etc are misleading). La’an is still saying it to Jim, trying to convince him that he doesn’t need to be a soldier, that in her timeline he could be an explorer. A bit different than what I imagined, but essentially the same.
- so, does Sam Kirk just sit in a mess hall and tell stories about his more successful younger brother to anyone who’s willing to listen? Does he make Jim seem like a frequent rule-bender and “he always gets what he wants” like in the finale? Is that gonna be a plot point in later episodes? 👀 (here’s me wondering about the Kirk brothers) I doubt Sam changed and would just spend time with La’an alone... to talk about his brother lol But also La’an wouldn’t willingly listen imho...
(you know, and since La’an doesn’t think that Kirk is someone who thinks five steps ahead, I wonder what kind of stories did Sam tell)
- awww Kirk willing to sacrifice himself so his brother can live 🥺
- ok ok ok ok new headcanon dropped. Kirk’s cellmate in the Denobulan prison was Sarek and he is a very good teacher and managed to teach Kirk how to do a Vulcan nerve pinch which Spock never managed (don’t you dare give prime Kirk this ability, he does not need to know how to do a Vulcan nerve pinch) - Sarek also taught him how to make a plomeek soup in the toilet lol (the image!)
- thank you thank you thank you. He failed to start properly, but he could drive the car. Thank you. (it was, I assume, an automatic, so it should make it easier)
- La’an is like: I read your file. (like in the prime timeline???) - but love her calling “Tiberius” insane and the whole scene tbh “is your brother called Augustus Benedictus?” :D
TOS!Kirk’s clone: George Samuel Kirk, your brother. Only you call him Sam.
AU!Kirk: Most people call him George
La’an: Absolutely no one calls him George.
funny how Jim just thinks he’s the one who calls him Sam, but in reality everyone does (maybe besides their parents). (*puts this into a headcanon folder*) - McCoy ofc calls him Sam because that’s how Jim refers to him, so he doesn’t know otherwise
(but also, did La’an not read Sam’s file??????????? since she doesn’t know Sam isn’t his first name??????) (but she read Jim’s ?????)
- the moment she realizes that Kirk has no idea who she is 🥺 (it’s like in AOS where McCoy also looks like he has no idea who Jim Kirk is)
and Kirk doesn’t care. And I don’t think he (or many people on the Enterprise) would care if La’an gave him/them the opportunity (Pike sure doesn’t care)
“Discretion is his middle name.” lol
- “my wife” sjdkshfjsdhfjdhsjghjdffhgj (you could just say “friend” lol, but no, you went for “wife”)
- I love how much Kirk loves food. He probably never ate freshly cooked meals T_T since he’s from space
- How does Kirk know about the Academy??? Do they have one on Mars? Venus? Did La’an tell him about Starfleet etc.?
- they went on a road trip lol time for bonding~
- “my friend and I” - is this the first time La’an called someone other than Una a friend in her adult life? T_T
- the way when and how they kissed was just so natural T___T I was really worried how they would do it, that they would lean into Kirk the womanizer blah blah (and that it would be rushed), but it’s literally just Jim removed from his responsibilities, his duty, and also thinking he’s gonna cease to exist soon but him being removed from the Enterprise is so important for this. I love Captain Kirk, from U.E.F. Enterprise T___T
- “say hi to Sam for me” T_T (I wonder if, while both love each other ofc, Jim is the one who really looks up to his brother, but Sam is the one who is jealous of him because he thinks Jim gets things he doesn’t deserve; Sam does everything right and doesn’t “win”, but it’s Jim who does something imaginative - in a way that Sam sees as “just luck” - and “wins”...)
- he’s dead T_T (James... James.... James.... T_T) [that was one of the outcomes I expected might happen, but T_T]
- yeah, anyway TOS/TWOK and SNW are not in the same timeline. This little Khan and Space Seed/TWOK Khan are two different people, and La’an is not a descendant of the Space Seed Khan [that’s literally a valid reading]. (I was willing to overlook stuff, but when this episode tells me there is a time travelling Romulan, who says that stuff was supposed to happen in 1992, but they were pushed back, I’m gonna take it. TOS and SNW being in different timelines could make SNW much better imho (but will they commit to it? There is obviously a goal, some things needs to happen, but... you can change others... like Pike’s ending, for example - the accident would still happen, but what comes after? It could be something new, different.)
In some way, this Romulans have always tried to hinder humanity (and Romulan time travellers exist) puts some light on snw finale as well. Why the old Romulan wasn’t there, why the Romulan fleet was so close. TOS timeline was the original one, but because humans became pests and because of so much time travel (even in TOS, like there is that TAS episode, stealing the whales), things changed. And some Romulans perhaps saw an opportunity in that particular battle. [It can also nicely tie in to AOS - that universe was always different from TOS even before Nero came. And that isn’t just me saying it, those who wrote Beyond said it was the case... and also that Khan was not the same Khan as in Space Seed or this Khan in SNW]
(and just fyi I have always considered TOS its own thing... I am a relatively new fan, though, I only watched TOS/AOS in 2020, Discovery in 2019, and I haven’t seen any other pre-Discovery Trek.)
- did she, just a little bit, hoped that she would see Kirk on the bridge? T_T
- “Not even Captain Pike or anyone else from this time.” hmmmm I wonder.......
me thinking again and again: is she gonna pull up Kirk’s file to look at a photo of him?
snw: she’s literally gonna call him
but like... did she have James T. Kirk on a speed dial?????? ???
- “Yes, ma’am.” this is my new favourite thing
T___________T
“Buy me a drink.” T________T
Now, Kirk smiling at La’an in the transporter room in the trailers make sense (obviously it can be just the editing and it’s not what it looked like in the trailer), because you could tell they knew each other (I initially though Kirk and La’an would meet when La’an was way from the Enterprise). Well, for Kirk, now, it’s just because La’an called and he’s meeting her face to face (and maybe they can have a drink, but probably not, since the trailers were showing him having a drink with Uhura, and I wouldn’t really want Kirk to have a drink with every woman on a ship in his second episode this season......)
T_______________T
(I literally did cry at the end lol)
I hope they realize what an amazing chemistry they have between Wesley and Chong and utilize it a lot in the future. They can’t just leave it there, right? There has to be a reason why La’an served with Kirk on the Farragut, right? I assume the time travel happened in that ‘verse as well, so she either reached out or took opportunity.... but also her closeness with Kirk - As in that his personality made her open up, ease up. - (which I suspected anyway, since I’ve been on Kirk/La’an train ever since snw1 finale), was the reason why she was so changed in the finale. Happy. It didn’t make much sense based on s1, and Una being locked up, but s2 could potentially put more light on it. Or they might also literally ignore it completely, but you can’t put La’an with Kirk on the Farragut and then do nothing about it. (well, like I said, this episode did manage to give me a LOT of stuff for the Farragut AU, even though now I’m also leaning more towards keeping it in the prime universe, since the timelines are different (mostly because I don’t want to not have Una around lol), we’ll see)
- Kirk was like Kirk but also wasn’t, and it worked really well. At the core, he was the same as in the snw finale (no matter what people will say, he just didn’t have any opportunity to relax in the finale), and he has tos!Kirk’s characteristics - there’s more focus on the serious Kirk, on early s1 Kirk, we saw a glimpse of Kirk from Shore Leave when he was walking carefree with McCoy. You know, the show characteristics, not what people think Kirk is like. (It was basically Kirk on a shore leave who doesn’t need to care about anything, he got more serious when he decided to save La’an’s timeline and not keep his own around)
I still have reservations when I think about Lt. Kirk, but the glimpse at the end with La’an was promising... (and trailers are misleading. And I did like the voice overs from him in them, so maybe I’m worrying about nothing. At least I have two Captain Kirks in snw lol)
(also Wesley seems like a mix of Misha Collins and Antoni from Queer Eye lol idk if it’s an accent or intonation or what, but it reminds me of them, mostly Collins)
---
Also ever since hearing Christina Chong’s Twin Flames, I was like I bet it fits Kirk/La’an and it really could (but like, post episode, you know), and I guess I should write a fic lol
