The wall insulation project is nearly done (just some final trim work remaining), which means I've resumed knitting. This will eventually be a cardigan (the long vertical stripes at the left of the first picture are the steek that will be cut to make the front opening).

I fell in love with the Owl Nouveau Cowl pattern and was determined to learn colorwork after I finished the scarf. After watching a couple of tutorials and cursing over dropped stitches, I have a really cool swatch based on the chart

That’s it. I’m done knitting hats for the year. Happy to wrap things up with a Tincan Knits Antler hat cabled in lovely Malabrigo Rios, colorway Playa and a stranded colorwork hat using up some Malabrigo Rios in Reflecting Pool and a speckly yarn (why do I never remember the names?) from Cascade Yarns that features a colorwork rib (that’s me experimenting) and the Metamorphosis motif from Andrea Rangel’s book “The AlterKnit Stitch Dictionary.”
Oh who am I kidding. I’ve already cast on another one.

Fiber arts corner of tumblr: anyone have a good resource for designing knit colorwork? I have a few sweater designs in mind, but I also am very aware stockinette in stranded colorwork is a very different tension beast than stockinette with just one color, but the internet is not yielding any helpful results.
Thanks in advance!!

Glacier Bay Beanie designed by Nancy Bates. I made these for friends who are going on an Alaskan cruise in May, out of a book called KNITTING THE NATIONAL PARKS, which has a lot of cool things in it! You can also find the standalone pattern here, if you’re interested. I used Woolstok Worsted from Blue Sky Fibers (in Spring Ice, Highland Fleece, and Cast Iron). It was my first time doing stranded colorwork, and my first time doing duplicate stitch, and I’m super pleased with how they turned out!!

chat I’ve got issues
I finished a project so that means I get to cast on another and did this! it’s a vintage… something pattern (theoretically a bag of sorts, but the directions say to make it to the size of “the carton”?? but that has yet to be explained by either the pattern itself and/or uncle google)
and, also obviously, the first time I’ve ventured into color territory (as seen by the floaty guts (it took me a few rows to figure out how to anchor properly)) and I’m kinda,, goblin? holding?? my yarn?? which is okay but I’m not a fan of so I have one of those yarn rings on its way in the mail to hopefully let me knit the way I’d like
any tips/comments/resources be v helpful 🤗 I’ve been mostly using Nimble Needles on YouTube for help

1-800-RU-swatching, front & back -- my knitting swatches were turning into a jumbly mess, so I decided to make them start earning their keep & sewed them all together. Now I need to make a few more to expand this to full blanket size & figure out a way to subdue all those rambunctious ends. (Shoutout to the magnificent Jamieson's of Shetland & their unparalleled color palette -- it's the only yarn I use. If you're looking for a grippy, non-superwash wool that blooms gorgeously when blocked, this is the yarn you want.)

Just knit the owl
I made a few color mistakes that I didn't notice until I was working on the top ribbing, but I'm still happy with how this cowl turned out, especially for a first completed colorwork project. Petrichor is an awesome colorway that's perfect for fall
Pattern: Owl Nouveau Cowl by Mary P. Hunt Main Color: Jinju (La Bien Aimée, DK) Contrast Color: Petrichor (Malabrigo, sport)

For those following along at home (and thanks to all 3 of you 😘), I finished this year’s contributions to the Hats for Sailors project at a nice, round 60 hats!
Have I stopped knitting hats? Oh, no. That would be so not me. I’ve got 4 in the hopper for next year, or for whoever needs a lovely handknit hat.

Okay I got a single like on my response where I mentioned over sharing about yarn projects
I'm just gonna talk about one project, and tag any other posts I do like this as #garbage does yarn
So the project I'm really trying to get finished right now! It's a dreamy knit color work short sleeve sweater situation, this is the pattern and what it's looking like on my needles! More details below the cut if people are interested
Tumblr media
The pattern colors are very yellow/red, I chose to do mine with more blue/purple jewel tones which is way more my vibe. It's also supposed to be a crop top but I've chosen to do a more classic length, which was an option in the pattern
I've been knitting for many years in some capacity (throwback to highschool garbage making loom knit hats) but hadn't even tried color work before starting this project, and it's been so fucking satisfying seeing these shapes come to life as I knit this piece! I maybe should have started with only 2 colors instead of jumping in to like 5, but the pattern only has like 2 active at a time so not too bad
Really all I have left to do is the bottom ribbed hem, and then finishing off the sleeves, and then blocking, the pic at the top is a bit out of date but it's the most recent I seem to have. I was toying with modifying the pattern for long sleeves for a hot minute but I think it's just so fun with short sleeves, and a bit more versatile.
I'm hoping the blocking process will help smooth out some of my tension inconsistency throughout the piece (where you can see puckering here and there like in the snip below), but even as it is I'm so happy with how it's turning out for a first slightly ambitious stab at color work!
Tumblr media
The pattern also included a blank template for making your own motifs and I'm so tempted to immediately jump into trying to do a Halloween/fall themed motif version as soon as I finish this one! My pile of wips doesn't agree that's a great idea but we'll just have to see.

The Owl Around and Find Out Mittens
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finished my Owl Around Mittens I've been working on since christmas. I gave em a little twist with the Latvian Braid and the bicolored ribbed cuff. I also carried the black yarn on the inside of the tip, because I found it kind of thin compared to the rest of the mitten, since it's stranded color work and therefor quite thick and warm. For the black lining of the folded cuff I used needles a size thicker than for the rest.
Worst thing: I don't like the pointy tips. In hindsight I would've liked a rounded tip better, but didn't want to unravel it to make it that way.
Best thing: they match my favourite scarf. Also, ears!
Colored yarn is Schachenmayr Tahiti in Bermuda 07617 (cotton), black yarn is ElbSox Merino. Yarn for the eyes is Novita Venla in Mustard, which I already used for their lovely Fox-Socks pattern. Pattern is Owl Around by Natalia Moreva.
