Day 4: Kate and the Bridgertons (Mallet of Death)
Katharine Sheffield walked down the street like she owned it. She was a tall woman-- the heels she wore had her standing easily over six feet. With dark, intelligent eyes that never missed a beat and darker curly hair framing her face, she was striking. Not beautiful exactly but there was something about her.
Colin only met her once but she'd made a strong impression. Judging by the wary look Anthony was giving her, he wasn't the only one who thought that.
"Bridgertons," she nodded once in greeting, "it's been a while."
When Anthony didn't pick up the thread, Colin slapped an obviously fake grin on his face. "Kate. Nearly five years since you testified against me."
Kate smiled back, all sharp edges. "Well, you did steal a painting insured by my employer for several million dollars."
"Allegedly," Anthony interrupted, ever the lawyer.
Kate's gaze jumped to the older brother and narrowed, eyes ice cold. "Allegedly," she repeated dryly.
They stared at each other unblinking for a long moment. "Well, isn't this just a happy reunion..." Colin said in a soto voice.
"Colin," Anthony snapped in a warning tone. He looked back at Kate. "You called for a reason?" he prompted.
Looking a bit like she'd smelled something rotten (and that something was them), Kate nodded. "My company, ARTE Generali, insured a hundred million in non-government Japanese bearer bonds."
Colin whistled. "Samurai bonds. Nice." Two matching glares snapped to his face and he held up his hands innocently. An illusion neither was buying, especially when he decided to ask: "That's a hundred million in yen or U.S. dollars?"
"Dollars," Kate confirmed with an unamused eye roll. No one was calling the FBI over a hundred million yen-- that was pocket change for a company like ARTE Generali.
Head tilted thoughtfully, Colin couldn't help asking, "And what's your cut if you recover them?"
Kate smirked. "Two percent." Colin resisted the urge to whistle again. "Which I only see if we find them, so…" She pulled a manila folder from her bag and handed it to Anthony who immediately flipped it open. "The truck was hijacked in transport, and I think the bonds are somewhere here in New York."
All of the earlier tension seemed to have dissipated as Anthony focused on the business at hand. "Danbury said you believe Nigel Berbrook is involved."
Kate nodded distractedly, something nearby catching her eye.
Anthony handed Colin the file to flip through-- it held pictures of the missing bonds, the truck, Berbrook. "Big international real-estate guy," Colin commented absently as he skimmed the man's biosheet. "He can move them without raising flags."
Kate's sharp gaze cut back to him for a moment. "Yes, he can." She offered another grin that could cut glass. "Excuse me for a moment."
Colin watched as Kate spoke quietly with the valet before glancing surreptitiously at his brother. Anthony looked… well, honestly, Colin wasn't certain what the expression on his brother's face meant. When he turned his gaze back to Kate, she was accepting the keys to an incredibly expensive looking car.
A man in a suit rushed out to the street. "Hey! That's my car! What the hell--?"
"Mr. Hartside, listen to me," Kate said in a confident, no-nonsense tone, "you can change the vin numbers, you can change the grill, the paint-- it's still an Aston Martin Victor. I know because you did not change the electronic vin behind the steering wheel."
The man's face was turning the most interesting magenta color. "You're crazy! You're stealing my car!"
"No, you stole it. I'm taking it back." Hartside reached into his jacket but Kate was faster. She pulled out a baton and made quick work of him, landing her final blow to the shin. Colin winced-- that had to hurt. "You are more than welcome to file a complaint with the FBI," she added, nodding toward them.
Hartside looked at Anthony who was already flashing his badge. "Special Agent Bridgerton, FBI."
The man, whose complexion had made a startling turn from red to white, tried to hurry away despite having been rather effectively hobbled. "This is obviously a misunderstanding. I should…"
Anthony pulled out his cuffs. "You should stop walking and keep your hands where I can see them."
"Yeah, running just annoys him," Colin told Hartside, flashing a charming smile toward his brother. He walked over to Kate who was now leaning against the car watching the arrest with mild interest. "So you're basically a high-class repo person."
Kate's predatory smile returned. "I prefer white-collar bounty hunter."
"Pithy," Anthony grunted as he wrangled Hartside. "Damn it, Kate, do you always have to go for the shins?"
With wide innocent eyes no one who'd witnessed the last five minutes would ever believe, Kate shrugged. "It was my only defense." There was something hard in her tone that hadn't been there before and Colin didn't miss his brother's responding grimace.
Kate pushed herself off the car and pulled a card from her bag. "When you want to talk about that painting, call me." She pressed the card firmly to Colin's chest until he took it but her gaze was on Anthony. "Bridgertons." The corner of her mouth ticked upwards. "Hartside."
She walked around to the open car door, slid inside like she belonged there and drove off. Colin let out a long exhale, relieved she'd left. There was something too perceptive about Katharine Sheffield. She was dangerous.

It feels like they’re building up more of a dynamic with Eloise and Colin based on that EW article which to me sounds like it could free up Benedict to be Anthony’s confidant cause otherwise he has literally no one to talk to. Since you know Anthony has no friends and Benedict is the only real option because Benedict is the only real brother Anthony has. All his other siblings relationships are kinda warped with the addition of quasi parental responsibility.
I know they’re also putting Daphne in that role but like that will never really feel right to me because Anthony is not the guy that unloads his issues on his younger by 8 years sister. In the books he honestly is not going to talk to Benedict either because he’s a emotionally stunted self isolating man child but the TV doesn’t have an inner monologue feature so it is what is.
BUT what I do want is my favorite Daphne and Anthony scene in TDAI (that the show writers had the audacity to cut!!) of the two of them comparing lists that Violet sends them to balls with. The pressure to marry and marry well is something that only the two of them know as the eldest son and daughter and that scene really articulates that.
I know in the show Daphne is married but I could see her come up to Anthony at the Hartside Ball and unceremoniously just says “Show me the list”. And Anthony unbothered hands it over so she can commentate on the choices Violet has picked. And she talks about the one she got at her first ball the one she met Simone at and Anthony’s like “Hah I’ve gotten one every week since I turned 27” and they get to bond over it. I just think that would be neat☺️

My Psychedelic Journey
Why take mushrooms?
What do they do to you?
I want to explain why I take them, my reasoning is not for everyone if anyone else at all! We all have our reasons.
So, Since being 16 i have taken drugs, started on pills, then coke and onwards. I had a coke & speed addiction for a 2-3 year period and often relapsing. I had consciously not taken psychedelics as i have known I've been mentally ill since being 20 and being diagnosed and given Prozac at that age. I was wary that i would have bad trips or i would be stuck on a trip. I just felt the risks were too high, especially taking medication and all the other drugs. Pretty sure i took LSD one night at a party was these green things and i was off my nut, i was in a different reality and i was quite honestly scared. i went skinny dipping in November at Great Yarmouth beach! So yeah it was a weird thing to happen and to this day can't remember what these pills/little plastic-looking things were or what i did with them, literally can't remember if it was paper or a pill. they were just in a bowl with all the other drugs.
I digress, several years later, I’d been clean maybe 1-2 years of all substances including weed, well maybe the odd joint but we moved somewhere we couldn't find a supplier! So we would have to make a 2-hour drive down to manchester just to pick up but eventually decided it wasn't worth the money in fuel. We were also skint which didn't help matters. We eventually found a supplier of weed and met new people who like us, liked drugs. We started sessioning on anything and everything. Mainly research chemicals as they were cheap and plentiful. m-kat hadn’t be criminalised at that point so we were importing large amounts of it. My friend, Xander decided to start making his own drugs. We were all sceptical about it but we trusted him. He made LSE(?) which is pretty much LSD but i think weaker, that trip was a nightmare as i spoke to my boyfriend just before the trip and i hadn't hung up and he heard me slagging him off...Anyway, moving on lol He made DMT one day, took ages. We had enough for the 3 of us who wanted to do it and my god, it's a short trip but it changed my way of thinking forever. I may revisit the DMT experience later. We did DMT a fair few times before i abruptly moved out as i ended the relationship with my boyfriend.
Now i did some research online, it wasn't as fruitful in results as it is today, we are talking 10 or so years ago. So came across mushrooms and some scant info on where to find them and how to take them. I went for a walk with the dogs, we lived in the middle of nowhere, 1500 ft above sea level (lived on top of hartside) and by a river and lots of sheep. Anyway, i started looking in sheep fields and soon realised that the fields were full of them! I would collect enough for a few doses at a time and dry as much as possible. I was taking shrooms 3-4 times a week including at times DMT.
So we’ve got to where i am taking them, i best explain why and what the effects were.
To be honest i took it as an escape. My relationship was a nightmare, he made me feel like death was my only escape. I had spoken to friends who had used psychedelics and they thought it might help me feel better. I had started being in pain a lot too at that point but not medicated for it. I was still taking meds but when planning i stopped taking them the day before. As Psilocybin is affected by SNRI’s. That applies to most drugs though tbh. it gives you a very high tolerance, you have to take more to feel it. Which could result in serotonin syndrome.
I wanted to search deeper inside myself, i had been interested in Buddhism and Krishna consciousness for maybe a year at that point and i saw it as a way of speaking to god. to confirm to myself that he existed. What i got was a revelation.
So using it so regularly means i can't remember each trip but i can give you what i learned and saw from those experiences.
I would take maybe 10g (its rough but 6 cup teapot with a handful of shrooms in) of fresh shrooms in tea. Tasted rank but get it down you! Then wait, and it is a waiting game!
I would sit cross-legged, often by the log burner, just close my eyes, listen to music and i would feel calm. A completely blissed feeling. An inner peace. I could see patterns and colours, swirling great vortex’s of colours and light. If i opened my eyes the patterns and colours overlayed the room and i would just forget i was in the room. I would see parts of my past, like showing me it wasn't my fault, that i should let go of trauma. I saw my present and it was like looking at my brain, black, covered in clouds and dying. If i touched it then there was a flash of colour. I saw the energy of the universe in front of me, glowing and pulsating in front of me, my heart beating with it, a feeling of supreme power came over me like i had been recharged. I was seeing my future, i saw the love i am capable of giving and receiving. It showed that my empathy wasn't a weakness and showed i was a good soul, It made me think deeply on experiences and learning from them, it cleansed me, it rewrote who i was. All hate drained from me. At peace with myself and others. The visuals were amazing, you can't describe it, you cant show the colours on a palette, you cant imagine the scale of this place. It truly was an amazing thing to do with my life for a year.
So it showed me a different me and overtime i morphed into that person. Today i am still hugely empathetic towards people. I have a kind and calm nature. I don't hold onto hate & i respect myself more.
However, i have decided i need to revisit the energy, i need its healing and recharging. I want to journey further and this time i get to do it with someone i love, my sister. She’s used drugs infrequently for a few years but like me, she has mental problems and wants to try shrooms more holistically than just ‘getting high’ and she thinks i can do that with her. I will be there to look after her, to experience everything with her. I want her to get to where i did and she sees life differently. That she grows as a person. It will be a very special journey that i get to be a part of.
So we reach the end of my epic. I hope you read it and enjoyed it. Maybe learn something, understand it better, i don’t know but most of all it's out there. Sharing experiences are a solid way of learning and getting to know someone.
Enjoy your mushrooms, be safe & enjoy your trip <3

Hairy Bikers Go North - Christmas
The Hairy Bikers Go North – Christmas: The Hairy Bikers are back on the road, and this time they have got their sights set on creating a northern festive feast for their families.     Dave and Si both feel it has been far too long since their families have been together around one table for a proper celebration. So, over a bacon butty and cup of tea at one of their favourite haunts, the Hartside…

The Hartside Pass, Cumbria. A lovely ribbon of tarmac taking you over Hartside at 1903 feet above sea level, from the small town of Alston towards Penrith and the Lake District. The M140i is very at home here with it’s smooth tarmac, although it’s the first time I’ve ever been overtaken on a country road by another vehicle on genuine speed. Have a feeling the bloke who managed it on his brand new KTM SuperAdventure knew the road very well though, was a joy to watch him lean that big thing over. Fun day.

So 2020 has been a bit of a weird year...
With restrictions on international travel and cancelled events some of us had to get a bit inventive for our adventures.
I set out to explore England by bike in September, starting and finishing from my home in Essex and covering as much of the coastline as I could in 10 days. My adventure took me over 1181 miles cycling and 58,494ft of elevation in total and here I’m going to recap the 5 best/most scenic bits from my trip!
Tumblr media
Aldeburgh to Southwold
This was one of the best sections of the first half of my trip. A rural bit of riding here, through Dunwich Forest, and over the River Blyth. Through nature reserves, spotting rabbits, squirrels and deer, a River Crossing I hadn’t expected and the approach to the crossing did make me question my mapping capabilities, but was totally worth it for the views! A really stunning part of England, felt very connected to nature, and the flat easy riding through this section helped to give me the time to focus on my surroundings.
Tumblr media
Hull to Scarborough
I rode over the Humber Bridge into Hull which felt a bit surreal but after that my favourite bit was Withernsea! When you think of seaside Withernsea is exactly the sort of fairytale seaside location brought to life! Sea, sand, a castle and amazing sea front cafes! I loved it!
Tumblr media
Then the ride from Withernsea to Scarborough hugged the coast, went via Bridlington Harbour before heading into Scarborough. A true seaside adventure!
Scarborough to Whitby
Now I have to add a bit of a disclaimer here! Whilst actually riding this section I didn’t appreciate it... there were some tough climbs and it was pouring with rain! But by the time I got to Whitby I realised I had ridden through some amazing locations - and Robin Hood Bay really would have been worth the descent down followed by the climb out of the weather hasn’t been quite so hideous! I really want to go back and do this in better weather as I know it was stunning! Lacking in photos for this bit as the weather was inclement but even here the view over Robin Hood Bay looks amazing!
Tumblr media
The Pennines (Stanhope to Hartside)
Well... this wasn’t my favourite bit to ride as being a bit ambitious my trip included the coast to coast from Newcastle to Whitehaven in one day... Brutal climbs and into a headwind... However I do believe all cyclists are slightly masochistic in that it’s the rides that hurt the most that leave the fondest memories! And this section of my trip hurt, but was stunning, brutal and just amazing in equal measures! Tough climbs, nowhere near enough descents for my liking, tons of sheep, open mores and a huge sense of achievement...
Tumblr media
Whitehaven to Carnforth
Save the best till last!! If you want a proper day of seaside and countryside riding this is the section to ride!!
Blue sea to your right and the mountains of the Lake District to your left, a coastal road that shows the best of both worlds! This route is one I would happily ride again, and again and again!!! I loved it! Can you tell? Rolling roads, very little traffic and in my opinion some of the best riding England has to offer...
Tumblr media
I am a massive advocate of heading out on adventures and making the most of what you can do... I’m actually quite grateful to 2020 for taking me out of my comfort zone and getting me to try something new, who knew such adventures and beautiful roads could be found starting and ending from your own front door!
Tumblr media
I wore the Primal Aqua Helix Kit (kindly washed by some friends a couple of times along the route) I had 2 pairs of socks with me (Narwhals obviously as I was riding the sea side, and the flamingo socks just because they are awesome) I also used the unisex base layer. I am please to report no kit malfunctions and no chaffing or saddle sores! I well and truly put my kit to the test on this trip... So for anyone wondering - the Helix kit absolutely lives up to even the toughest of adventures!

It doesn’t really seem to matter how many times I go to Scotland or just where it is that I go to in Scotland, it’s always good, and a short trip last week was no exception. The ongoing Covid pandemic has disrupted plans for countless numbers of people and for some in ways that are much more significant than holiday travel. That said this years planned European trip was shelved and although the very short Scottish trip wasn’t a substitute it was most enjoyable and hopefully I will be able to manage another trip to Scotland before the autumn.
After leaving home I headed for Clitheroe, Settle, Hawes and Kikby Stephen before turning for Mickleton, Alston and Hexham. After that it was Bonchester Bridge in Roxburghshire and just for interest the name is said to come from the old Roman term on Bona Castra – which means good camp. After Bonchester it was on to Selkirk for the wonderful A708 up past St Mary’s Loch and onto Moffat and my overnight stay at Seamore Guest House.
All in all it had been a fine days riding with added benefit of not a single drop of rain. Clicking on any of the pictures below should open a scrolable gallery.

I had stayed at the Seamore Guest House on a previous trip and just as before the place was comfortable and the hospitality was warm (you can read about my previous trip at this link)
After a much needed shower and a change of clothes I went for a wander around the small town, a beer a bite to eat and then a decent nights sleep in a partiuculalry comfortable bed. Some more pictures below including one of the Star Hotel, apparently the narrowest hotel in the world, and one that Pat and I stayed in a few years ago when we were travelling in Scotland.

I was on my way for about 8.30 the following day and had planned to head back to the A708 via the small road that runs from Tweedsmuir to Talla Reservoir and then on past Megget Reservoir, and although the run up to Tweedmuir was magnificent the weather was blowing an absolute gale and as I head past Talla, on more than one occasion I felt I was going to be blown off!. The weather over the top didn’t look great, so I decided to head back to Moffat, do the full stretch of the A708 and then make my way home via Hawick, Stannersburn, past the Kielder Reservoir over the stunning Hartside Pass and on towards Penrith and then home. Despite the steel grey sky and raging winds at the start of the day – the weather turned out pretty good with ideal riding temperatures in the low to mid 20s and once again a day without rain.
I was home for about 5pm having done around 600 miles and once again having really enjoyed another (albeit shot)  trip to Scotland.

Get the taste for a new Suzuki this summer
The all-new GSX-R1000 will be available to test ride from a series of biker cafés this year, as Suzuki embarks on a summer tour of some of the most popular haunts in the country. Starting at the Green Welly Stop in Tyndrum, Scotland, on June 3, the tour takes in seven weekends, ending at Suzuki’s local bike café, the Super Sausage in Towcester, on September 30.
The new GSX-R1000 features a host of MotoGP-derived technology, including a clever variable valve timing system that gives the new sportsbike both 202hp and 117.6nm of torque. It gets a 10-stage traction control system governed by an inertial measurement unit that also controls rear wheel lift under braking. There are also three power modes and ABS, while the GSX-R1000R also gets launch control, lean angle-sensitive ABS, and a bi-directional quickshifter and auto-blipper, plus Showa’s race-proven Balance Free suspension.
Suzuki’s demo fleet will also feature the new V-Strom 650, which gets more power and torque for 2017, plus a two-mode traction control system – which can also be turned off – and a new design, as well as the bigger V-Strom 1000, which features lean angle-sensitive ABS and a two-mode traction control system.
Joining Suzuki’s GSX-S range for 2017 is a new GSX-S750, which takes its engine from the iconic GSX-R750. It gets the same dash and three-mode traction control system as the bigger GSX-S1000 and GSX-S1000F, and all three will be available to test ride as part of the café tour, along with the SV650 middleweight naked.
Suzuki GB marketing manager, Rob Cooper, announced the tour, saying, “This is the third year of our biker café tour, which has proven both immensely popular and successful over the last couple of years. By visiting the cafés we’re getting out there and bringing our bikes to a wider audience. As a result, we’re making the test ride experience even easier, and spending time with people we’re perhaps not currently seeing at other events or in dealerships. We’ve cherry-picked some of the most popular destinations across the country, and will be running two-day events at all of the cafés on the calendar. We’re now looking forward to the first event next month.”
Those wishing to book a test ride in advance can do so by clicking here.
Suzuki’s café tour dates:
3-4 June – Green Welly Stop, Tyndrum, Scotland 24-25 June – Super Sausage Café, Towcester 1-2 July – Squires Café Bar, Newthorpe, Leeds 15-16 July – Hartside Top Café, Alston, Cumbria 29-30 July – Loomies, West Meon, Hampshire 5-6 August – The Café at Llandow Circuit, Llandow 30 September – 1 October – Super Sausage Café, Towcester

The wall insulation project is nearly done (just some final trim work remaining), which means I've resumed knitting. This will eventually be a cardigan (the long vertical stripes at the left of the first picture are the steek that will be cut to make the front opening).

Thrilling garden event: I think these are slime mold fruiting bodies, and if so they're the first ones I've seen in real life. Look at that tiny little stem in the 4th picture! Just a wee guy. For scale, the substrate is a dessicated blade of timothy grass; the little grey orbs were ~1-2mm in diameter. If this is slime mold I don't know its type; I'm not even sure these images are good enough to ID. Regardless, I hope that its presence means there's something here other than the Fuligo septica I regularly see at this time of year.
Thanks to @myxomycota for all their great posts & for inspiring me to keep my eyes open when I'm down on the ground.
