#OnThisDay Sunday February 8, 1998
Aaliyah guest appears on stage alongside Missy, Timbaland and Magoo during a halftime show for the NBA All-Star Bash; which started Friday February 6th through Sunday February 8th, of 1998 at Madison Square Garden (New York, NY).
The National Basketball Association {NBA} All-Star Weekend is a weekend festival held every February during the middle of the NBA regular season that consists of a variety of basketball events, exhibitions, and performances culminating in the NBA All-Star Game held on Sunday night (February 8th).
Timbaland and Magaoo had just released their first album “Welcome to Our World” (November 11, 1997) and performed their top hits; “Up Jumps the Boogie”, “Luv 2 Luv U”, “Clock Strikes”, and Missy’s debut solo single “The Rain” alongside Shaunta Montgomery, Mad Skillz, and of course Aaliyah on this night.
It’s not documented that Aaliyah performed any of her own hits during this event although the televised broadcast performance was dubbed “Aaliyah and her Superfriends”.
The Basketball game itself --- Lakers guard Kobe Bryant became the youngest All-Star starter when he suited up for the West at age 19. This was the first All-Star game to feature both Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan is crowned the game’s MVP.

Am I the only one who HATES the sUpErFrIeNdS?! Imagine working your ass off on something just for it to get stolen from you, poor DeVanté.
i think the supafriendz concept was dope. i won’t discredit it because a lot of talent was held within the small collective—i’m just not too fond of two of its members. i can’t shit on the rest. i mean, some artists realize and can acknowledge that they flow well together.
regardless, i think swing mob/da bassment cru was supposed to be different from that. it was described as a 90s motown full of his personal pick of upcoming producers, writers, singers, and rappers. the vibe was genuine and he seemed to rightfully stress on the importance of originality.
“magoo, that’s why you ain’t shit and you ain’t going to be shit because you’re sitting there jocking the next motherfucker, you need to be on your own dick.” people really thought he was this controlling tyrant who deserved every failure and downfall when he was just trying to get these artists to manage and have control over their own sound, lmao.
he could’ve built an empire out of the acts he discovered and mentored.

Mad Skillz's From Where ??? Album Anniversary
He first made a name for himself by finishing in second place (Losing to MC Supernatural) in a national freestyle competition, which eventually resulted in a recording contract with Atlantic Records. At this time he went by the stage name Mad Skillz rather than just Skillz. Mad Skillz' Atlantic debut album, From Where???, and its single, "The Nod Factor", were released in 1996, but neither received much commercial or critical attention. The album's title was a reference to the regionalism in hip-hop, and at the time the state of Virginia did not have a large hip-hop scene. In the late-1990s more of a Virginia scene emerged, and he allied himself with fellow Virginia natives Missy Elliott, Timbaland and the Neptunes. He made appearances on Timbaland's albums Tim's Bio in 1998, and Indecent Proposal in 2001; Timbaland made plans to sign Skillz to the Blackhand label he was developing; however, this label failed to materialize. He along with Danja Mowf, Lonnie B and Kalonji The Immortal, members of Skillz' Supafriendz collective, also appeared on a remix of Aaliyah's hit single "Are You That Somebody" in 1998.
