Say Something Nice About Every Star War part 5 Solo
The opening chase is cool, I love speeders
The little Patrol Trooper bike looks really dumb, but in a fun way
Han failing his deception rolls immediately is always funny
Imperial March appearing in-universe for the first time as a propaganda/recruitment vid is *chef kiss*
Mimban battlefront scene is the best representation of frontline combat in the whole series
We get one of the few clear cut nods to wookiee enslavement which is a big thing in books and tie-ins but never really mentioned in the films
Beckett’s crew feels close-knit immediately.
Alden Ehrenreich is really good at playing a young Han. He’s not doing a Harrison Ford impression either, he’s just making it his own.
Vandor heist is a lovely setpiece, so much going on: magnetised Range Troopers, trying to hook the Hauler to the train, fending off Enfys Nest
Enfys Nest is another check in the “cool bounty hunter design” column, but actually gets to do stuff unlike Boba or any of the OT hunters.
Paul Bettany does smooth-talking gangster really well.
We never really see opulent crime in SW, it’s usually dingy hideouts or kind of crass displays of greed like in Jabba’s palace. Voss’ luxury yacht broadens the notion of upper class crime.
Samurai Mandalorian armour in the back there!
Donald Glover as Lando is brilliant and doesn’t get nearly enough screentime. Hope the series rectifies that.
L3 is a really unique take on a droid, raises the question of just how self-aware droids are which is pretty much glossed over in other films despite droids clearly having emotional responses and feeling fear and pain.
It is implied Lando and L3 banged, which again has interesting implications
Chewie choosing to let his comrades go and return to Han is a surprisingly moving moment
Teras Kasi is canon!
The Calrissian Chronicles.
Finally get to see the Kessel Run.
That shot of the Star Destroyer looming in the storm is pure cinema.
“I hate you” “I know”.
Han’s plan is actually pretty good.
Shout out to all the Revolver Ocelot shit Beckett does.
Qi’ra gets to kill Voss continuing the tradition of women who are into Han killing crime lords.
I said it in another post in much more depth but Qi’ra’s “betrayal” is actually just her pursuing her own survival and she does it knowing that it’s the only way she can stay alive while also protecting Han and I don’t think Emilia Clarke gets enough credit for her role as Qi’ra. It’s a surprisingly subtle performance and it’s never 100% where her interests lie.
Han shooting first gets a cheap laugh but it’s a laugh none the less. (personally Greedo shooting first doesn’t bother me, I think the greatest crime Lucas committed in his revision of films was adding dialogue to the Anakin and Padme scene in epIII)
Han wins the Falcon fair and square after all, but does so by having stolen Lando’s own means of cheating. That is such a perfect way to play that out because I think Han (and many of his fans) like to think he’s a bad boy (hence all the shot first bs), but actually he is at heart a good person who just has shitty luck and much as he likes to pretend he’s only out for himself he really never is.

The Rise of Skywalker - Bendemption
Leia,
In the wake of feeling guilty that she should’ve been present with Han while facing Kylo (in TFA), sits in silence, restless.
She had an organization to lead, but her Husband and son needed her too. Should she have dropped everything to tend to her personal life, what about the lives that fall under her leadership?
These thoughts plagued her mind, she contemplates both her son and husband throughout the film.
Luke approaches his sister, they talk about mistakes and second chances; Shortly, Anakin himself, gently rests his hand on his daughters shoulder, he briefly joins the conversation.
They ultimately affirm her that Ben is not out of reach; Now, with much stronger resolve. Leia realizes her fight was always to take back her first born from the Dark Side, back from Palpatine.
Palpatine:
The root of The Empire/ First/& Final Order, the evil that’s plagued her family for 3 generations.
She realizes that it is time to stop running from seeing what her son has become, and instead go to him. To save him from himself.
Fast Forward:
She ultimately makes her way to Ben Solo in person with the help of Chewie (who is with her in this iteration) and then Finn (who is not screaming “REYYY!!”)
Fast forward to Kylo raising his Lightsaber to strike down Rey, once and for all-
Leia saves Rey by calling her sons name through The Force, amidst the loud, raging waves.
Kylo turns around, after so long, sees his mother standing in the distance.
Chewie extends his arm out in front of Finn, non-verbally telling him to stay back.
She walks forward by herself through the mist, and Kylo finally sees her face.
He is immediately shook:
Leia’s face, written with longing & a visible pain of seeing her son this way, and how much her absence contributed to it.
Rey stands up & sharply says (as if in shame) “L-Leia, i-”
*Leia nods to Rey, gently putting her hand up, gesturing to leave the rest to her
*Kylo backs away from his mother & Rey, confused, conflicted, like a trapped Animal.
With his back to Leia, he looks out at the raging waves, that are a visible reflection of his unstable self.
The Han & Ben scene, would be the Leia & Ben scene.
She acts out the scene in a similar fashion as Han did, dialogue is similar.
Kylo Ren: “It’s too late, i can’t turn back now..”
Leia looks at him.
Kylo Ren: “Dad....he’s-”
She closes her eyes, her face expressing grief, she breathes in and exhales and says softly
Leia: “I know.“
Rey looks away
Kylo is silent, sinks his head
After a moment of silence, she steps closer, standing behind him.
“Vader...
-was the apprentice of Palpatine. Your Grandfather, my Father.. did unspeakable things, horrible things.“
Kylo lifts his head, slightly turning his head
“But he turned. Because of your Uncle, Luke.“
Kylo sharply turns his body to Leia, looking her in the eyes
She nods, affirming that this is indeed the truth. A truth he’s, surprisingly, never known.
Kylo, with a sinking look of shock, visibly dead inside (The one he looked up to the most, was turned by the one he hated the most) and on top of that; Palpatine, the one behind the voices in his head, ALSO manipulated his Grandfather; Who turned anyway.
The Shot pans to Rey who is also in shock, and looks down
Leia walks up to Kylo, caressing her sons face with the same hand on the same side of his face, unknowingly to her, just as her husband did.
She smiles, on the verge of tears.
With a loud thud, he collapses to his knees in tears, dropping his Lightsaber.
Leia embraces her son, for dear life, as if for the last time.
“Luke never gave up on Vader. Your Father never gave up on you. I, your mother, will never give up on you. Don’t give up on yourself, Come home, Ben.“
art by Nadia Pietrobon
Kylo, stubbornly says through tears: “Your s-son, is dead...”
Leia shakes her head, clutching her son, she says softly:
“My son, is alive.”
Again, she has no idea Han said this already, but Kylo does.
Kylo then hears the haunting voices that transpired over the course of his fall:
“Ben, no!!“ - Luke
“You cannot deny the truth, that is your family.“- Lor San Tekka
“BEN!!“ - Han
You have too MUCH of your fathers heart in you, young Solo. - “Snoke”
“Your son, is gone. He was weak and foolish like his father. So i destroyed him!“- Kylo
“That’s what “Snoke” wants you to believe, but it’s not true. My son is alive.“- Han
After a moment to let the mood settle, John Williams’ score rises
Ben Solo’s fist tightens, with resolve, he (RISE)S to his feet.
Opening his eyes, he looks to Leia with a warm smile, an expression of relief & peace, and for the first time, in far too long;
Ben Solo hugs his mother.
unknown artist
“Leia“ Rey says softly, with tears in her eyes.
She steps forward, handing Leia her Lightsaber.
Leia accepts it, looks at it warmly, then looks to her son, offering it to him.
Ben looks down to his Lightsaber on the ground, the physical manifestation of his fall:
He picks it up.
He looks to Leia, she smiles.
Ben discards Kylo’s Lightsaber to the daunting waves, swallowing it whole, doing away with his past.
Kylo Ren is Dead
----------------------------------
Leia and Luke.
Walking two paths in life, overcame their mistakes:
He, in a moment of weakness, doubting his own nephew and raising a hand against him.
She, feeling guilt of not being there with Han when Kylo needed them both the most.
Both redeeming someone from the Dark Side-
Redeeming a Skywalker from the Darkside.
And Ben, ultimately, following exactly in the footsteps of his idol; By turning back to the Light.
Fin-
------------
I took the time to write this, because of the epiphany of being robbed of Leia ever talking to her son, the child she gave birth to, when he needed her the most, TWICE; Much less, truly, directly contributing to his turn.
INSTEAD OF A STRANGER, REY. INSTEAD OF A DAYDREAM OF HIS FATHER. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEIA, HIS MOTHER, to turn him, bring him back. As Luke did for their Father “before” them. - My Epiphany
I understand the Han scene, but it could’ve been done better, using Leia as the conduit.
Rest in peace, Carrie Fisher.
But regardless of her passing. This was an Injustice that came about through poor planning, and misunderstanding of the Skywalker Saga and The Family.
As her speaking to him or truly meditating about either her husband or child could’ve been at least dabbed about in Episode 8. Going out with Luke to face him, anything.
J.J had a mess to clean up, but tough cookies.
Leia imo was robbed of impact & a much bigger role in Kylo’s Bendemption since Episode 7, and i realized today how pissed off i never knew i was about that.
Mind you, i’m not a SW fan.
The first SW film i saw was EPIII back when i was a kid, an excellent Shakespearean tale of tragedy taking the form of prophesy (vice versa). I saw the original Trilogy in a week to prepare for EPIX. Read some Vader comics, Rise of Kylo Ren, witnessing Leia & Han’s love blossom in the films. So i get it.
- I’m no SW expert, i’m a crash course spectator with some history, and infatuation with Anakin’s fall, and yet; I GET IT
The one common denominator in Kylo Ren’s life, that i notice that didn’t get the major role she deserved, was Leia.
A fan film “Tragedy of the Chosen One” nailed it with Leia.
Not a front and center role, but she had something to do with her son, with The Force, she reached him.
And thinking of THAT video was the catalyst to my epiphany.
She is Luke Skywalkers sister, doing the same as he, redeeming one of their own family, would be poetic.
As it was not just Luke, meant for greatness, they were TWINS of the same Seed; Heirs of Skywalker Anakin, and Skywalker Padme. Equal in every respect, yet so different.
And NOW being a Jedi herself, what kept her? Why dear writers, deprive her of a significant, consistent place in Kylo’s return; When she is Ben Solo’s mother, his only mother, especially with Han gone, it was her time.
She deserved better.
