Synopsis: Rise!Splinter, still fresh off his mutation and caring for four very young children, lands unexpectedly in the 2003 TMNT universe with all of his sons in tow. tracklist & my reasons for the songs below the cut :) (half & coward montblanc excluded because i believe those to not be about hinako and kazui's relationship)

little lies - fleetwood mac: i feel like this is almost too obvious to explain. i know the song is technically about falling out of love, but the lyrics fit way too well with their relationship. this is from hinako's perspective, she wants to believe that kazui is genuine, but she slowly realizes that somethint is off. this song encapsulates their dynamic to me. tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies... oh no no, you can't disguise... [].

little soldiers - the crane wives: "and i dragged you through every room inside our home, but you still held me at night" and "i swear that i loved you, i swear that you loved me". hinako works herself to the bone for this relationship to work, so does kazui, they don't surrender, they want to win against the social norms. but they can't. no matter what, they can't do it, and they tear each other apart.

cat - milgram: yeah

have to explode - the mountain goats: "someone's gonna do something someone else is gonna regret". this whole song is so somber and sad but you know the singer and their partner are going to have a terrible fallout. it's all so bleak. hinako and kazui are going to have that argument, and hinako's going to fall.

time - aliceband: "will you remember me in years to come?/or am i just a seed, and please be fine/'cause i hate this lying all the time/and i would kill myself if i thought i'd go somewhere better/but this is it/we are in hell, we are in pain/and i will suffer with you"

second hand news - fleetwood mac: a song about the singer's lover finding someone new to love and the singer leaving. take that as you will.. hinako pov :)

angeleyes - abba: lyrics don't really fit their relationship but they do fit eerily well with the entirety of the cat mv (i made an amv of it. Perhaps.)

leaving home ain't easy - queen: "stay, my love, please stay" - this line always makes me think of the moments before hinako's death. a lot of singled out lyrics really fit their relationship imo..

i want you to love me - fiona apple: hinako pov. need i say more. a woman raised in a society that expects her to be the perfect wife and she finds the perfect guy but he doesn't love her. not quite.

neo-neon - deco*27: yeah.. (both of t2 kazui songs feel like they are sung to hinako imo)

the winner takes it all - abba: feel like i don't even need to explain myself just listen to it man

drowse - queen: a song about goodbye and love fading away... and remembering what used to be happiness... do you think kazui ever looked back on the happy days with hinako and felt like the worst man on earth

butterfly - weezer: sorry for weezer. "sorry for what i did" MORE GUILT!!!!

another heart breaks - elo: just a good, moody, calm song that i feel would, if milgram was a movie, play in the days after hinako's death

the man with the child in his eyes - kate bush: something about kazui constantly reminiscing about his childhood, wanting to not grow up, wanting to be young and irresponsible forever. hinako pov.. meeting him and seeing that child in him

the stranger - billy joel: "you never let your lover see the stranger in yourself". self-explanatory? kazui never told hinako the truth until... well.

left-handed kisses - andrew bird: a song about two people falling in love. there's a lingering sadness in it, almost like they're both kind of unmotivated.

fakery tale - deco*27: THIS IS MY T3 COVER PROPAGANDA!!! i'd rather forget this ever happened, pretend it was all just a lie...

i have such a complicated relationship to mcu hela as a character because like on one hand the way her character is actually executed in t3 makes her a shitty loki redux where the message is "scapegoating and killing the rebellious sibling really is good actually" AND she's part of a retcon which i feel is actively detrimental to the previous films - her whole arc alleges that odin actively hid his imperial past from his sons while previous films tell us that they knew the worst of it and they were taught that it was good... but on the other hand, even the worst propaganda still tends to contain lies, so maybe those ideas don't have to be completely opposed, and on top of that i genuinely LOVE what she does for odin's character and the family dynamic by being such a fundamental lie, by being a ghost haunting every interaction they have before that film, by making everything that happens in thor 1 just another iteration of a cycle that odin has already seen play out, and i also think she has tremendous potential in and of herself, as a third child of odin, raised by the same man but under such different circumstances... god. goodbad badgood movie syndrome strikes again. she is marvel, she contains multitudes.

Friday Qualifying at Spielberg

I went to Friday Qualifying at Spielberg, my first ever F1 event and just wanted to share a few of my impressions.

- it’s seriously LOUD! Especially the Formula 3 cars (F2 and F1 not so much in comparision). Of course I expected it to be loud, but I was still quite surprised when the F3 cars first went out on track.

- I was in the Red Bull grandstand and I thought it was a pretty good place to sit (although it’s not like I have anything to compare it to). Since the Red Bull Ring is a pretty short and compact track I got so see a lot of it and of course the cars drove by me often. As you can see from the picture from above it’s right next to straight between T1 and T2 and I also got a good look at T6-8. In the distance I could also see T4 and T10. In the morning when the grandstand was still pretty empty I could even see up to T3. 

- the location of the track itself is honestly just stunning with the surrounding mountains. 

- from what I experienced from the organization of the event it was overall ok: I came by train and then took a shuttle to/from the track and that went pretty much perfectly. However the actual security check by the entrance was honestly a joke. They don’t really check your bags at all, so not at all surprising there are always a tons of flares going off because I imagine they’re quite easy to bring in.

- food and drinks are predictably overpriced. My Dad was a bit disappointed that he couldn’t get a proper Coke. lol Bathroom situation was also ok and the lines weren’t that bad whenever I went (which is often lol). Also basicially the first event I ever went to where the line for the women’s bathroom was much shorter than for the men’s. 

- the dickriding of Verstappen and in extension of the Dutch fans is pretty crazy. I don’t know how many times the announcer hyped up how Verstappen is the ~world champion~ (no comment)/currently leading the championship/how he could become the drivers with the most wins at this circuit this weekend (pls no). And it felt like basicially during every break from racing they broadcasted from the grandstand in the middle (the one that’s basicially orange army central). To an extent I get it - Red Bull driver at the Red Bull owned track, the whole thing is bascially a Red Bull propaganda event. But there are fans of other drivers/teams there and at a certain point it was just eyeroll-worthy and honestly even gave me a bit of secondhand embarassment. 

- and of course the behavior of a lot of Dutch fans was pretty yikes to say the least. First of all the cheering at Lewis’ crash was just gross. You could definitely feel how gleeful a lot of people where at his crash - basicially at every replay they showed of the crash another cheer erupted. Shameful. (and to a lesser extent there were also cheers at George’s crash).  Secondly, in terms of what a lot of women reported concerning harassment: I personally didn’t really experience anything of the sort (thankfully), but it was definitely not super comfortable to be among the orange masses (and I’d like to add that 1. I was there with my Dad, so it may have been different had I been alone/with other women and 2. while I never noticed anything aimed at me personally, basicially 90% (if not more) spoke Dutch so who the fuck knows what may have been said).

- I would honestly love to go again, because getting to see F1 cars (and F2/F1) in person was really cool and like I said, the location is really great, it wasn’t too expensive imo (I paid 50€ for one day which I thought was reasonable, don’t know how much weekend tickets are) and it’s the closest and most accesible circuit to me, but honestly with the way it panders to the Dutch/Verstappen fans and with the reports of their behaviour I don’t know if I would wanna go to this specific circuit again, because that’s just not a very welcoming atmosphere. I would hope that something changes but honestly I doubt it, because I unfortunately don’t think the Red Bull Ring as an organization has much interest in punishing the Dutch fans (because lbr they’re making RB a lot of money). And well, Red Bull (talking about Red Bull GmbH) is a pretty questionable company itself, to put it lightly. I hope this gets enough bad press that they’re forced to do something. I feel like if Verstappen gets his second (well first legit) title this year, which at this point seems like the most likely outcome, his fans will only get worse and places like the Red Bull Ring will only become more hostile to anyone who isn’t a Verstappen fan, which is honestly just sad.  Well, in conclusion I would still say it was a positive experience and I would love to go to another F1 GP (and maybe the whole weekend this time), but I’m gonna have to seriously consider whether that will be at Spielberg.

I'm supposed to be working on the next shaking the latch proper update but all the activity surrounding the @turtle-tot-tournament is making me giddy so here is some 2003 Mikey and aggrieved dad Yoshi/Lou/Rise!Splinter content in preparation :^)

"I am still not sure this is a good idea," Yoshi ventured, brow creased as he scanned his surroundings.

Mikey waved him off dismissively - by contrast, he looked impossibly cheerful, as though he were the one who had to compete and not the children in their care. "Relax, Lou, they're gonna be fine. Look, they're having a great time already!"

That was true, at least. Raphael and Leonardo were positively bursting with energy, chasing each other around the grown-ups' legs with their toddling gait - Yoshi was pretty sure either one of them would soon end the game by stumbling down face-first, but for now, nothing seemed able to stop their fun. Michelangelo, too, was giggling and clapping at the sight of his brothers' antics, even if he couldn't join in and was instead tucked safely in his older version's arms.

Donatello was still sniffling suspiciously at the air, yes, burrowed in his father's shoulder under cover of the rat's unkempt hair, but then again, Yoshi's softshell son had always been the most reticent towards visiting new places. Besides, three babies enjoying themselves out of four was not such a bad ratio. They could have done worse. They had done worse, in the past.

Still, that was not the problem at hand, which he had been trying to explain to Mikey for the past half hour or so. "But- look, the first round is a dancing competition."

"Yeah, and?"

"And?! Orange can't even walk! How do you think he is going to dance?"

"Oh, we'll figure something out." Once again the turtle shrugged his companion's worries off, offering him a cheeky grin in return. "These guys love babies, right? They're gonna go crazy for Mini Me here. 'Sides, I bet no one'll complain if he gets some outside help, since he's a baby and all."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean we're basically the same person, you know? Technically it's not cheating if I lend 'em a hand."

As if to sustain his point, he held the tot up close to his face, smiling brightly all the while. Little Michelangelo shrieked in delight, most likely because he loved being lifted and tossed around like a beach ball, but one still couldn't deny the resemblance between the two - despite the different species of turtle and the decade and a half of age difference, the smugness in their expression was shockingly similar, as was their likelihood of winning Yoshi over without even putting in that much effort.

The rat sighed, resisting the urge to bury his head in his hands. This was going to be a long tournament, he could already feel it in his gut.
