Argumentative Text
In Antigone, we see the human fear of tyranny addressed. Throughout history, much of philosophy and history has been quick to label someone Tyrant”, and this is generally considered negative across all cultures. Not to say the word has always been the same. In Greek, its tyrannos. In Chinese, its Bàojūn. In Arabic, its taghia. With hundreds of languages across the word, its shocking that most have a word for an oppressive leader. Even in absolutist societies, the idea of a corrupt, all-powerful leader is apparently feared.  What is it about tyrants that we fear so much? Historically, many governments were absolutist, unpopular, and oppressive. Most stayed in power regardless. It is particularly the idea of a singular person, with all the whims and flaws that individuals naturally have, having an iron fist around the lives of a nation, and being unnecessarily cruel. Even today, this idea is tied to evil itself. Yet, are tyrants so bad? Are we too quick to label them as evil when they are merely human?
In Antigone, Creon is presented as the classic tyrant. He seizes total power for himself, trumpets his own glory, and creates oppressive laws to keep himself in power. When crossed, he penalizes people for standing up to his authority. He is the antagonist of the book, and in some ways, half of the “moral” or central theme of the story seems to be based around his character. We see how his mistakes and pride lead to the deaths of many, including his wife and son. We blame him for his mistake and for the deaths of all of the leading protagonist. One is left to wonder if this if fair. Is it really Creon’s fault at all?
Creon was simply doing what a singular person in power has to do to survive. He had inherited a city that had just had  a civil war. He had no real prior connection to the throne, with a respected lineage. Any person trying to seize power could make a claim against him. Could it be that sometimes, “tyranny” is merely a government trying to survive. That in the absence of internal stability, it is necessary for a man to seize power absolutely. There are many reasons that in ancient societies, monarchy existed. The concentration of power into the hands of elites generally meant that a nation was doomed to oligarchy or monarchy. In times of instability, it was necessary to crack down on the state. Like martial law, tyranny may have historically been monarchs like Creon, trying to stabilize the realm and attain their own security. When under that sort of stress, mis-steps are inevitable—humans apparently seem to crumble long-term under that sort of pressure. And, of course in an unstable time with oppression, unpopularity among the nobles and the populace is inevitable. This only makes misunderstandings and conflict more likely. And, as history is written by the victors, when such a leader fails, or is over taken by the instability, what would the account say? That is was justified by their “tyranny”. Maybe, Tyrants isn’t a label for oppressive, all-powerful leaders. Maybe, Tyrant is simply the term given to those who failed to survive.

Merzouga is a village in the Sahara Desert in Morocco, on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a 50km long and 5km wide set of sand dunes that reach up to 350m. Most people are here to take a camel safari into the dunes, and to get a taste of remote (tourism-influenced) Berber life.
