Welcome to the Tarlos Wedding Celebration Event!

Now that TK and Carlos are finally hitched, I wanted to host an event where we could celebrate the couple and how far they've come. I want to spread all the love and appreciation for these two incredible characters who mean so much to so many of us.

Each week, I will be posting 3 sets of prompts. One will be aimed more towards gifsets and edits, and the others will be a short prompt, as well as a dialogue prompt, aimed at everything and anything else you'd like to create. All of which will be listed below. Of course, you can pick from whichever set you want, mix and match them, and create as many posts as you like for each week. Lastly, you can get involved in whichever weeks you'd like. There is zero pressure to create for all of them.

Quite the Catch

Ahhh okay, just a lil short thing (less than 500 words) for week 1 of the Tarlos Wedding Celebration for the Alternate first meeting prompt. (I actually have another for this prompt that will go up soon.)

🏥🏥🏥🏥

“Okay,” Carlos says, holding up a business card, “here is the case number and if you think of anything else, just let me know.”

“Thank you, officer.”

Carlos smiles and looks around the ER. The emergency room at Austin General was crazy most nights anyway, but the aftermath of a combative patient had rendered the ER in shambles.

His eyes settle on a man who looked to be his age, in scrubs, holding an ice pack to his forehead. He looks dazed, but since he was sitting upright and not bleeding, he was mostly being ignored, so Carlos decides to check on him.

“Hi,” Carlos says softly. “You doing okay over here?”

The other man hums in greeting and looks up, confused. “Didn’t I already give my statement to one of you?” He asks.

Carlos looks to the empty space next to him and smiles kindly. “I don’t know, did you?”

“I think so.” He sets the ice pack on the stretcher and sighs. “I really should get back to work.” He hops off the bed and pauses.

“Sir?” Carlos reaches out to steady him but gets waved away.

“I’m okay-” his eyes roll back in his head and his legs give out; Carlos barely catches him before he hits the ground.

Carlos looks up as the man in the bed shifts, looks around, and then groans. He notices Carlos and is silent for a moment. Eventually, he says, “You, uh, saved me from smashing my face into the ground. Thank you.”

Carlos shrugs. “I mean, you were actually gonna fall backward, but I didn’t figure you needed another concussion.”

The man in the bed huffs out a laugh. “Yeah, probably not.” After a minute he says. “Do you usually rescue people and then watch them sleep?”

“Huh? No, I, um,” Carlos stammers. “I actually need a statement. From you. For my report.”

“Hmmm.” The nurse gives him a disappointed smile but tells him the morning’s events, leading up to him collapsing.

“Well, I’m sorry for your trouble, I should let you get some rest,” Carlos stands. “Oh, I’m also going to need your name and a good phone number. Just in case we have more questions.”

“You guys ask a lot of questions, don’t you?”

“It’s kind of in the job description.”

“TK Strand. 512-555-0126.”

“Thank you. I hope you feel better soon," Carlos murmurs as he makes his way to the door.

“Hey, officer?”

“Yes?”

“If you wanted to use that phone number for… less professional reasons, that’d be okay.”

TK’s green eyes sparkle and Carlos smiles shyly and he nods. “Okay, then. I’ll call you.”

This was written for @tarlosweddingcelebration's week one - alternate first meeting! I'm a sucker for childhood best friends, and so this was born. I hope you enjoy it!

Carlos Reyes is seven years old when he meets TK Strand for the first time.

He’s playing soccer in the front yard with Luisa’s boyfriend while Luisa sits on the steps, a fond look on her face as she watches them. Esteban allows Carlos to make the goal, and Carlos cheers, jumping up into the air.

“Luisa, did you see me? I made it! I won!”

Luisa laughs and smiles at him.

“Si, hermano. I did see, good job!” She plucks a cookie off the plate sitting next to her, “Come get a cookie! Winners get cookies, didn’t you know?”

Carlos runs over, sliding through the grass, and sits at her feet. He takes the cookie from her, biting into it. Luisa runs her hand through his sweaty hair, and they watch as someone new moves in across the street.

“Luisa, do you know who moved in across the street?”

“No, I don’t, Carlitos.”

Carlos frowns. “Can we go say hi? I wonder if there’s a boy I can play with.”

Luisa checks the time on her watch and then smiles at him. “We can, but we have to be quick, okay? Mami’s going to call us for dinner soon.”

Carlos stands up and nods, tugging at her hand.

“Come on, let’s go then!” He stops for a second. “Bring the cookies! It’s polite!”

monday mourning

share your toughest writing challenge -- dialogue, plot, overwriting, underwriting, mechanics (grammar, punctuation)?

Thanks to @rmd-writes, @reyesstrand, and @liminalmemories21 for the tags. Behold, my neuroses:

1. Inflexibility. My brain is an asshole (thanks, ADHD!), and I have to write completely linearly and in total silence. So there's no "write what you're most excited about and come back to the rest" or "put on a playlist for inspiration while you write." And god forbid I've come up with some sort of narrative theme or throughline (like the play on three act structure in scenes from an unfinished story or naming each of the chapters in to build a home after the back half of "home is" statements that are thematically applicable to the seven scenes that chapter contains). Once that's in my head, there's no deviating from it — which is part of how I end up with three-chapter fics that are 75k.

2. Indulgence. Speaking of… Oh how I long to be a writer who can tell stories in stark, sparse, straight-to-the-gut prose, that no-frills perfection that so many authors I love have mastered. Alas, I am a wordy bitch. I write paragraph-length sentences. I push punctuation to its very limits. I once posted a 33k chapter. I will never say in a hundred words what I could say in a thousand, which is probably why I have never mastered the art of the drabble. And it isn't just word count, it's character work. Give me two snarky boys with complicated feelings for each other and I will let them banter for hours. (My next Tarlos fic, for the @tarlosweddingcelebration event, needs to be done in snippet-style scenes I haven't tackled in ages, so we'll see how that goes.)

3. Raging Perfectionism. If I could just write now and edit later, I would be so much more productive than I am. As it stands, the red pen never leaves my hand — I edit as I write, changing things constantly until I feel like everything works. I'm obsessive about the perfect word use, about dialogue being true to character, about pulling each thread I've previously laid so that everything ties together. There is no such thing as a first draft, for me — by the time I reach the end of a fic or a chapter, the whole thing is close to final because I've edited so much already. As you can imagine, this makes for an extremely slow writing process. I have no idea how to rectify this. I tried writing straight through once, as part of a sprint spree, and it literally gave me hives.

Also summaries. I hate summaries.
