Posted @withregram • @archaeologyink 30 years ago today the naturally preserved & tattooed body of the Tyrolean Iceman, Ötzi, was discovered melting from a glacier in the Italian Alps. Here’s a quick FAQ on the world’s oldest tattoos: . 👉How many tattoos does he have? 61 total, in 19 groups on his lower spine, lower legs, ankles, abdomen, and left wrist. A group on his abdomen is invisible to the naked eye & wasn’t identified until 2015. . 👉What do they look like? They’re all straight lines, 7-40 mm long. Most are in parallel groups of 2-7 lines, though two (R. knee, L. achilles) are crossed marks. . 👉 How were they made? It’s been suggested they were cut into the skin & rubbed with pigment, or perhaps stitched, but there’s no actual proof of either. Our guess is that they were hand poked. There are no firm archaeological IDs of tattoo tools from the period. Stay tuned for more on this… . 👉What are they made from? Soot and ash pigment. Microscopic quartz crystals found between the soot particles suggest it was collected from a stone-lined campfire or hearth. . 👉Why was he tattooed? Some are located near spots where he suffered from degenerative disease, & at least 9 groups are located on or near traditional acupuncture meridians for back pain & abdominal disorders. The going theory is that his tattoos were applied as medicinal or therapeutic treatments. BUT… that doesn’t mean they didn’t also cary visual symbolism. . 👉Is Ötzi’s the oldest tattooed mummy? Yes; sort of. Radiocarbon dates from Ötzi’s & his belongings show he died ca. 3350-3120 BC. Recently two tattooed mummies from Egypt’s Predynastic period were dated to 3351-3092 and 3341-3017 BC, so are more/less contemporary with the Iceman.
