I genuinely don’t understand this narrative people are trying to push of Baela and Rhaena’s imagined avenging of House Velaryon like yeah their mother was a Velaryon but those girls are TARGARYEN. They had no stake and no claim to Driftmark/House Velaryon like I need people to leave those girls alone.
They had less "claim" than those who are in the actual "house" unless Corlys decided either would be his heir. And since he didn't, again, they had less claim than any person with the last name "Velaryon". That's just how the system works for Westerosi succession. In terms of the emotional family bonds, yes the girls are Velaryon. Yes their mother being a Velaryon and being their grandparent's daughter will always be valuable to Rhaenys and Corlys for them to be involved & actively offer or try to support in those girls' futures. But they aren't socially or culturally obligated to, they chose to be. If a lord or his wife chooses to not give material or emotional support to their niece or grandchild of a different house, it's not definitively seen as them abandoning said person. This isn't the real 21st century.
Having a specific surname in a feudal era/society does not prioritize nor is defined by "love", care, and emotional bonds between family members--it's about being a part of a very specific social group that owns particular hereditary lands or titles. A clan or blood related family that acts as another layer of identity in of itself for the sake of politics, which is why the Roman men had as much as 3 names (personal name, surname [clan or "gens"], and a nickname that indicated from what clan or "gens" you came from). I am of the ____ clan, this ____ house. Not "My last name is ___, it's what my parents (who have different family names) chose for me out of the options". More often than not, there are no options to "choose" a surname for a child; that child "belongs" to their father's house and they get their father's name. Are there exceptions? Of course (Jaecaerys' double identity). These are exceptions of a rule; that rule is already proven by how exceptional it is for a child to inherit the leadership of a different house through their mother or maternal grandfather. And though the clan/house is weighed above the individual, the head of the clan/house is given authority over their other members precisely because they are defined by being the director of the clan/house's future. Rhaenyra nor Viserys, however, is not the direct head of the Velaryon house and thus can't decide for Corlys regarding his heirs. They obviously can influence or make stipulations or show their preference in deals they make with Corlys...but they'd be thought of of crossing a boundary if they directly tried to tell Corlys who he should choose as his heir.
There's nothing individualistic nor community-affirming about it; it's meant to be exclusive for the sake of dividing resources and ensuring those resources go to someone within or very close to one's clan/house, and often as by the head's decision when open. Is this unappealing and even isolating at times, of course. But people need to know what the sociopolitical boundaries are to understand the quality of the social relationships people have or don't--thus see this one of many elements of the society the characters developed in shape/inspire the decisions that they make. The dragons twins are formidable; but Corlys valued passing down his legacy through boys of his own name, not matter how much he loved these girls.
And the reasons why they are pushing it is so that they can "prove" Rhaenyra was a worse person than she likely was AND to try to emphasize a sense of the blacks' faultiness to equal that that was clear for the greens for that "balance" some of them want. Others want that balance bc they agree with the greens and don't want them to appear as bad as they actually were so they can throw people's suspicion off of their choice and eschew really thinking about their own choice. That and they don't like that these badasses are black and, as one other anon said, are still tied to Targness and the Targs. Credited "Targness".

A Targaryen Thanksgiving (boy oh boy)
Rhaenyra is trying to stick to a schedule calmly but has to make sure Daemon doesn’t burn the kitchen down from his aggressive cooking, and trying to tell Alicent that really you don’t have to do that, I can take care of it. She’s starting to ask herself why she ever agreed to be the hostess.
Daemon is in charge of the turkey and he’s refusing to follow the recipe because whoever wrote it (Otto) “doesn’t know shit” and “can’t tell the difference between a chicken and a turkey so f*** this recipe!” He’s wearing an apron gifted by Rhaenyra that has all of their kids’ names.
Alicent has taken over washing the dishes even though dinner hasn’t started. She lowkey wants it all to be over already. They try to stop her because she’s wasting more water that way but she obsessively scrubs and soaps and says it’ll be better and faster this way! Much easier for all of us! Trust me, I know! *inhales sharply*
Otto is walking around the house like he owns it, bourbon in hand, commenting on the “positively scandalous” furniture. Inspecting the food with a grimace, moving things around in the kitchen, making snide comments about how HIS family did the stuffing. Daemon is ready to stab him with a tong.
Rhaenys and Corlys bring exotic wine from overseas. They’re #coololdmarriedcouple but Corlys is lowkey whispering we should have had this at our place, you would’ve been a better hostess, plus—all organic! Rhaenys side-eyes him angrily and makes him help with the Parmesan Brussel Sprouts Salad.
Aegon looks like he JUST left a Halloween party and is pacing with his headphones on. Alicent is yelling at him from the sink to change your clothes for crying out loud! But he can’t hear her because his sad boi emo music is on blast and he’s maniacally texting Aemond—where the hell are you?! Get me out of here!
Helaena is talking to herself, looking a bit nervous. She’s lost her pet, Dreamfyre the Lizard, but hasn’t told anyone. Lowkey going through the mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes. Last time her pets peed in the Christmas pudding! She’s also texting Aemond—where are you?! Pets lost! Help!
Aemond comes late in a leather jacket and makes a HUGE spectacle of parking his fancy ass vintage car. Everyone rolls their eyes at his dramatics and audacity. Daemon=deja vu. He brought his own homemade gravy. Daemon very reluctantly says that it could maybe go well with the turkey. Aemond preens at his hero’s uncle’s approval.
Jace is trying so hard to help his mom with the pumpkin pie but she keeps saying next year, next year Jace! Watch over Joffrey and the babies for now please! Joffrey is aggressively waving around a lizard-looking thing in his hand and amusing baby Aegon and baby Viserys, who have gotten their hands on the bread rolls and crawling around maniacally. Baela, who Jace keeps staring at instead of the kids, is looking like a million bucks and snapping photos for the gram. Say hi to my followers grandpa Vissy! She’s in charge of music and is blasting T Swift.
Rhaena is the most gracious out of everyone but is losing her patience because no, Baela, now we got bad blood, you know it used to be mad love isn’t funny right now! Luke is helping Rhaena with the tablescape but he keeps awkwardly looking over at Aemond, who’s staring daggers at him. He scratched Aemond’s vintage car last Easter and he has not forgiven him. At all.
Finally, Viserys is in the corner, half awake (half alive?) and they keep coming up to him with plates of food trying to feed him or yelling things like did you take your medicine today father?! Or how’s your blood pressure brother?! Or you need to eat husband! He just grunts and groans. He believes that the chaos around him is everyone having a grand old time!
One big slightly sociopathic family. Happy Thanksgiving indeed!

Velaryon Family Weddings and Headcanons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
List of Headcanons about House Velaryon and their traditions
- Velaryons usually wed cousins, as unlike the Targaryens they are not allowed to intermarry (in Westeros, cousin marriage is not considered incest) and this way they keep their Valyrian blood pure.
- I imagine them as similar to Ancient Greeks in their love for the sea and their stories, magic and lore, and like the Dutch regarding their naval power.
- When a Velaryon flowers, they have a coming of age ceremony in which they get into the ocean and hold their breath underwater for a minute under the guidance of a Valyrian priest.
- In Velaryon weddings the couple exchanges dragonglass jewelry.
- When someone weds into House Velaryon with the intention of becoming a part of the clan of Salt-blooded Valyrians the couple has a wedding in Driftmark in which both of them drink a wine produced in the island mixed with a herbal essence all while a Valyrian priest performs a ritual, this way they ensure the salt in the blood of the Velaryons born from their unions will be stronger.
- After the wedding ceremony the person marrying into the House is placed on a circle of salt and chant a Valyrian hymn about the sea, storms, hurricanes and water. It is believed that with this ritual their future child will be definitely a True Velaryon.
- The person that is marrying a Non-Velaryon who will join the clan, is given an elixir before the ceremony.
- Due to those rituals it is believed it is magic what makes Velaryon features so prominent.
- They have branches located in Lys, Volantis, Estermont and the Stormlands.
- The Merling King is their main god.
- Queen Alyssa Velaryon often took her children with her to Driftmark.
- Alyssa Velaryon's older sons Aegon and Viserys often sailed with her, and her youngest son Boremund as well.
- Alyssa Velaryon as the Lady Consort of Storm's End had the dream she could travel with her daughter Jocelyn in their own ship.
- Baela Targaryen was the best Lady of Driftmark according to maesters, second only to her grandmother Rhaenys.
- Laena Velaryon, the daughter of Baela and Alyn, helped her brother get in good terms with the rest of the other Velaryons, by building more ships for them and fortresses as well as doing explorations together.
- Laena Velaryon Jr also did many businesses and deals with the rest of the Velaryons. She also learned how to glide though the air alongside Baela.
- Laena Velaryon Jr was friends with her cousins Naerys and, Daena and Rhaena Targaryen, and Leyla, Ceryse and Lianna Hightower.
- Many times Aegon IV The Unworthy tried to bed his cousin Laena, but she always rejected and pushed him away, which made Aegon resent her.
- The granddaughters of Princess Rhaena Targaryen, the sister of Aegon III and Viserys II Targaryen, were wed to Corlys' sons and Velaryon lords, and Lord Corlys' daughters wed to Rhaena's grandsons. However one of Corlys' granddaughters: Viseriya Velaryon was wed to Lord Caron as an agreement made by King Daeron II Targaryen after Dorne officially joined the Seven Kingdoms in order to keep the Marcher House's at bay.
- Corlys Velaryon, the son of Baela and Alyn, made the effort to improve the naval power of House Velaryon and of Westeros, by making his own ships and boats and giving jobs to the common folk, and visiting the places his great-grandfather and namesake the Sea Snake went to and doing trade there, thus beginning a trade empire that would benefit House Velaryon, not at the same level as before but they still gained riches.
- Corlys learned new fighting styles and taught them to his subordinates and family and guards.
- Thanks to his many fights both sides of the Narrow Sea, he was considered King of the Narrow Sea, like his grandfather Daemon Targaryen.
- Daeron Velaryon had made up with his cousins Baela and Rhaena, and Baela and Hazel Harte had been good friends and Hazel let Baela know if something happened to her husband and her, she wanted Baela to take care of Daenaera.
- Daenaera told her son Daeron many stories about her father as her son reminded Daenaera of her father.
- Daenaera named her son Baelor in Baela's honor.
- After Larra Rogare went back to Lys, Daenaera became closer with Aemon and Naerys, becoming a second mother for them.
- After the death of Daenaera's sons and the death of Viserys II and Elaena's involvement with Alyn in King's Landing, Elaena went to live in the castle of Daenaera's father Daeron Velaryon.
- Daenaera's daughter Septa Rhaena built a Sept near Daenaera's castle for Jon and Jeyne Waters.
- Jon Waters' children wed the children of Jeyne Waters.
- Septa Rhaena spent a whole year in Driftmark building castles for the Velaryons after her sister Elaena gave birth to the bastard twins she had sired with Alyn.
- Aelinor Penrose's second marriage was with a Velaryon lord.
- Both Vaella (Maekar I's granddaughter through his his son Daeron) and Maegor (Maekar I's grandson through his son Aerion) were wed into House Velaryon.

Do I think Daemon will cheat on Rhaenyra with Nettles in Season 2?
No because that would require them to write a substantial character arc for a black person.

I realized that if the showrunners follows Rhaenyra's canon story, she's gonna attempt to torture/kill all her black supporters. Or the showrunners pull some shit of their sleeves to make Velaryons and Nettles (aka every black person on the show) betrayers pieces of shit to remove every fault from "girlboss" Rhae or they'll have to portrait Rhaenyra as the westerosi founder of KKK Lmaooo this show is a dumpster fire
Westerosi founder of the KKK💀
With Addam, it isn’t quite as bad since she only orders his arrest and “questioning.” Plus he’s loyal to her to his detriment so throwing him under the bus would be absolutely pointless, but I imagine they’ll try to pin Nettles almost murder onto Mysaria.
It won’t be a good look(and won’t make any sense), but they can’t exactly turn Nettles, who did not one thing wrong, into a shameless Jezebel without the show being ridiculed once again for their blatant misogynoir.
Basically, I doubt they’ll make Corlys, Alyn, Nettles, and certainly not Addam into villains due to the backlash they’d face. Although I don't doubt they'll try to make Missy Anne look like some poor helpless victim.

Laenor: Why isn’t the statue smirking at me?
Corlys: It isn’t smirking at anyone, they’re all just imagining it.
Rhaenys: Three of us saw it, Corlys. How do you explain that?
Corlys: *points at Joffrey* Sleep deprivation. *points at Rhaenys* Paranoia. *points at Laena* Delusional personality disorder.

ngl the way they made vaemond (aka the most dark-skinned member of the velaryons bar corlys) as the one velaryon opposing rhaenyra and daemon, calling rhaenyra a whore to make him more unsympathetic, and making him rant about purity of blood just to be killed by a white person who received no consequences is just... stinky. Really the underlying message of all this is that black people should give their lands to white people and stay quiet about it.

My only problem with the show making the Velaryons black was they did it solely for the purpose of saying they had characters of color in their show.
Did making the Velaryons black add some much needed representation to the show? Sure. But it still wasn't good, at all.
Laenas' character was given what? Ten lines? The "teenage" (Aka the one played by a 27-year-old instead of an actual 14/15-year-old, probably to make Daemon's character seem less shitty.) version of her had two scenes, and maybe three lines. She was there just enough to where they didn't cut her character out entirely.
Then Baela and Rhaena, holy shit. The younger versions of them only had as much screen time as they did because 1) the same reason I stated for Laena and 2) as a plot device for Aemonds character. While there are so many things wrong with that scene in particular, Baela and Rhaena being there were the most confusing. Instead of it being a 2v1, where it made sense for Aemond to come out as the victor as he was not only 4 years their elder, but had more training, half for that same reason and half because Criston more than likely favored the green children in the books as he did the show.
(Sorry I know I'm rambling but I promise there's a point, also this is not Aemond slander I love him)
They made it a 4v1 to add more sympathy to Aemonds character. (which people didn't even fucking pick up, turds) Baela and Rhaena's only purpose there was to serve as antagonists in his story.
Then for older Baela and Rhaena...I don't have a singular memory of them speaking. Not one line. Baelas only scene was cut out- and it was a great fucking scene.
So am I all for the Velaryons being black? YES ‼️ BUT DON'T RUIN THEIR FUCKING CHARACTERS IN THE PROCESS

It's not Addam's episode count, they gave the same thing to everyone in the cast. Addam will be in episode 2 according to the leaks, in episode 7 as well.
Checked and you're right. It's just a prop. I got too excited. 😭

alyn velaryon for hermes? he seems bi. like. do you get the vision?
oh now I am in a dilemma because I genuinely both the brothers suit the Hermes vibe.
They’re both bastards, later legitimised by Rhaenyra but during their early life had to fend for themselves..maybe leading to thieving and tricking on their behalf to get things to survive (I am probably way wrong here but we really don’t know much about their early childhood)
Addam is described as “relentless, determined, glib of tongue, and loyal” (which can help in thieving and persuasion)
while Alyn was considered "proud and headstrong and at times insolent” (which may lead into Hermes’s show off-ish nature?)
So different parts of the Hermes vibe fit both of them (this sounds so dumb but I hope the point is understandable)
Also about Alyn being bi..I’d argue that both the brothers were at least a little bit 🌈✨
In the Second Battle of Tumbleton , Seasmoke and Tessarion engaged in what seemed to be “more of of a mating dance rather than a battle” and as we know..dragons are reflective of their riders.
This above theory got me to ship Daeron x Addam obsessively..not healthy..would recommend.
As for Alyn..I don’t have much proof or a theory but as you said..he seems bi (based off vibes alone)
Dude I’ll be completely honest..the only reason I have not uploaded the Hermes fic yet is because my dumbass can’t decide between two characters for the past 2 weeks (they don’t have any significant connection so I can’t make them both the God like I did with Poseidon). And now I have 2 more characters to think about…
Oh well I’ll try to get “Hermes” out at the earliest and thank you so so much for taking an interest in the series, means a lot. Even if I don’t end up choosing one of the brothers, I promise I’ll reblog this post with a moodboard of them as Hermes .. soon .
Thank you, once again ♥️

TG argument is “Daemon wants his blood on the throne” but... He WILL have his blood on the throne, with Baela as queen consort and her children as kings/queens of the Seven Kingdoms as first then by intermarrying all his grandchildren... With the added bonus of a massive number of Targaryen descendants, all hailing him as a dynasty patriarch.
If Daemon wanted to get rid of his step-sons he would do it right after Aegon III’s birth, there is no reason to let them grow up (3 boys that were used by TG against Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne) and live so long (making them MUCH harder to kill). Especially since y’all paint Daemon as a mix between Ramsay & Gregor Clegane on steroids.
1000x Yes.

The Gods of the Sea
Tumblr media
Warning: Childbirth, Velaryon lore, birth dragon-like deformity, death.
It had never been supposed to be that way.
Laena was glad she had been able to give birth to her son, they had had to bring a weird tool that cut Laena's lower skin to make more space for the baby, she knew many women survived that procedure unlike the infamous cutting of the mother's wombs; once the maester shakily placed the baby in her arms Laena frowned, the baby had literally the appearance of a dragon. It couldn't be, what had happened? One maester gave her milk of the poppy as he healed her, and the other was doing everything he could to examine the baby but as soon as an hour passed her baby boy that she had planned to name Aellisar, passed.
She had dreamed so many times about a boy with a dragon diving into the sea and that he could have been a great warrior and that he would be like her father alongside befriending many of the sea creatures.
It was not weird, after all, her mother had told Laena that everytime a woman carried a baby with the energy of the Merling King they would dream about the future of their children.
It was thanks to the first Velaela Velaryon, who had been a dreamer, but as she liked to better say it, a seahorse dreamer, someone who could see visions regarding their loved ones in any time, and that they could do magic with any kind of liquids. Velaela had been a student of magic and a Valyrian priestess, and as Laena was her descendant it hurt her to know the future she had dreamed would now remain just a dream.
Three days after she was in her bed a fever came for Laena engulfing her for a whole week in which a mermaid goddess was now in her dreams.
The mermaid goddess was with a boy who had honey blonde hair and clear blue eyes, and black skin, which made Laena know this was her son; they both were swimming in an oddly purple colored sea.
"The time runs, but your boy's energy is everlasting and it has passed to your girls, they will accomplish his destiny." Said the mermaid.
Laena felt dizzy and had many hallucinations and could not digest anything she ate; Laena swore she could hear chants of mermaids as well as the slurring of the god Caraxes, as well as her beloved Vhagar calling for her. She felt exhausted and was tired of hearing the septas pray for her.
Laena just wanted to feel the winds hit her face as she was atop Vhagar; with all her remaining strength she managed to get up and evade the septas as she set her path to reach Vhagar and as she was nearly there she saw a Valyrian woman in front of her, she had pale skin, silver-gold hair and pastel purple eyes, then she remembered that in both King's Landing and Driftmark there were portraits of the Queen Alyssa Velaryon -her great grandmother on Jocelyn Baratheon's side and great great grandmother on Aemon Targaryen the Pale Prince's side-.
Alyssa was the first Velaryon queen of Westeros and had Corlys' ambition come to be true, Laena would have been the second Velaryon queen of the realm.
"It's time you come home my brave seahorse." Alyssa gave Laena her hand and as she cried she managed to mutter back.
"Will my family be fine?"
"That is something the gods will choose."
Sighing tiredly, Laena took the hand of her great grandmother and felt how the sea was taking over her, she still breathed but it was like her body was now foam and salt instead of flesh and bones.
