Grey’s Anatomy 16x03 Final Thoughts

Amelia and Link:

I fall in love with them more and more each week okay bye

This episode is full of cute, adorable moments of these two. I know this is Grey’s and nothing is ever super-smooth, but my one wish is that they navigate all the bumps together – or, better yet, they just have a peaceful pregnancy. God knows Amelia deserves it.

Also, I am loving them talking about feelings (including their fears) so openly. Amelia’s growth, in particular, has been so, so good over the past two seasons. I hope this momentum keeps going. And Link? He’s perfect, in every way. They’re so good for each other and will make amazing parents to their child.

Jo, Meredith, and Bailey:

I was so happy watching at Jo doing a complicated surgery by herself :) Well, except for the fact that Meredith was watching remotely, which…is weird. I don’t know. I understand why, of course, considering how against the surgery the patient was, but having a doctor who was recently fired join a surgery via FaceTime would probably never slide in a real hospital, and if KV was really sincere about giving Meredith actual consequences of her actions, she wouldn’t have written this plot so that Meredith still gets to do what she wants.

Look. I understand the loyalty these interns/residents have for Meredith, but Qadri was really getting on my nerves. I think part of it was because she was Jo’s resident today, and spent the whole time complaining instead of helping out her attending. While Bailey definitely overreacted, and I hope Qadri getting fired isn’t permanent, I can’t say I’m surprised. Side note: I really hope Bailey goes back to having storylines that don’t involve her scolding people all day.

Nico, Levi, and Deluca:

If you read my recaps last season, you know that Nico is…not a favorite of mine, to put it lightly. After an entire season, he has barely any character development besides “He’s Gay” and “He’s Dating an Intern.” That being said, I actually liked him this week, from how he jumped in to help Link and Amelia with their patient to making sure Levi stopped putting himself down.

Speaking of Levi, though, he is really starting to get on my nerves. This guy has been a resident for quite a while now; he should know better than to make such a simple mistake. It was funny in the beginning, but him acting as “Glasses” is really, really getting old.

And as for how Deluca dealt with him, every other time a resident/intern screwed up on their superior’s watch, the superior took the fall, including when it came to talking to the patient’s family. Responsibility is responsibility, and it’s clear that Deluca just cares about doing the right thing in front of his boss.

Miscellaneous:

I have to admit, I skipped over all the Teddy/Owen and Jackson/Vic scenes again this week, so I don’t really know what’s going on with either of them. One thing I do have to say for Jackson/Vic, though, is that if Grey’s really cared about writing good storylines, they wouldn’t rely so heavily on Station 19 to further their plot points.

The way this restraining order thing is playing out is ridiculous. There are more productive ways to abide by the order than having Koracick kick Owen out of the ER every five minutes. It’s annoying.

Maggie and Amelia’s patients being long-lost lovers is cute, but it has been done a billion times already (although I don’t mind. Just a stray observation).

Casey, my favorite intern and the only one I can tolerate tbh is back!

The first time I saw Jo’s patient’s red hair, I immediately thought “April’s back,” so uh that's how deep my denial is a year-and-a-half later, I guess

Okay this episode was just AWESOME!

• Teddy asking for a job to everyone was so funny, especially when she asks Maggie just after talking crap about Amelia 😂

• I wasn’t into MerLink but damn they were so cute during the episode, with the birthday and HOW BAILEY CAN BE ALREADY 5??? Like??? Zola was 5 yesterday

• Love the relation betwenn Amelia and Tom they deserves their own comic show

• Jolex being the cutest 🥰

• Owen getting paralyzed was hilarious and kinda badass the way he tell everyone what to do in less than 30 seconds before to passed out

• I was so sad for Catherine/Richard/Jackson hope she will survive the surgery

Btw I didn’t get all the hate Owen gets after that ep… I just think the man wants to be romantically engaged with Amelia and be with Leo/Betty. But he also wants to be there for Teddy and his child, which is understable, but he doesn’t want to be with her BECAUSE of the child. The thing he was wrong about (to my point) was to be mad at Teddy for wanting a job in the hospital, make a new life in Seattle just after she gave up her life in Germany so her child could have 2 parents. But he made up to her at the end while giving her his job so… that’s okay. I’m glad he choose Amelia AND his child with Teddy. Can’t wait to see what’s next!

Important topics addressed in a subtle way, as always.

Being in a situation like Teddy's, not knowing what to do or how to behave it's normal and it's ok. Every journey is different and shoudn't be forced to follow what society says.

Talking can be the hardest thing to do, but it can prevent problems and harm.

I know it wasn't enough time on screen, it's not my place to say if it was good representation or not, but I liked seeing a non binary character.

On a lighter note:

Addressing the baby as "soldier" it's fitting for Teddy, but maybe say it in another tone? Owen please don't mess with her feelings, you did wrong by not telling Koracick what was going.

Meredith calling DeLuca "my boyfriend" OMG!

Jo's trip went wrong and I want to know why! Right now!

Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 15X11

This was one of the season’s more serious episodes. It could also be counted as a standalone as it focused on three separate plots only and featured only certain characters. They developed Teddy and Koracick’s friendship more this episode which I liked.

I liked that Thatcher and Meredith met one last time and got to make peace. There were some nice shout outs to Molly which will please long time fans. I wonder if we’ll get to see Thatcher’s funeral or hear mentions of it? Visiting Thatcher was hard for Meredith because of the way Thatcher had behaved for so long. Although I’ll admit I teared up at the fact that he kept pictures of her, of her award winning article, and of Lexie. He did love them in his own way. However, that’s no excuse for the abuse and neglect he inflicted on both of them and Molly.

When Thatcher tries to make amends Meredith cuts right to the crux of the problem. Thatcher is always running away and leaving Meredith behind. I liked that Meredith spoke her truth. That was really low of Thatcher to come to Derek’s funeral, not speak to her, give up when Meredith wouldn’t return his phone calls, and then bring it up now. There are so many other things he could have done. He could have called her at work. He could have asked Richard to set up a meeting. He could have sat in the waiting room at Grey Sloan and waited to catch her and apologized. He could have gone to her house. He could have faked an illness and check himself into the hospital.

He gave up when it wasn’t easy like he always does. Which is precisely Meredith’s point and she’s right. Choosing not to speak to her Derek’s funeral because he thought it would have been for him and not for her wasn’t his call to make. It was her’s which makes the gesture useless. Thatcher’s excuses were weak as hell (surprise, surprise) and Meredith was having none of it. Also her jokes were on point. I liked that he finally found out about Maggie. He took it pretty well all things considered. Seeing them joking and laughing about Ellis as only they could was great.

Finding out that he left stuff for her kids was so sad. He did care in his own way he just wasn’t man enough to do what needed to be done. We also learned some cute facts about the kids here. I liked that they are giving them more personality and a bigger role now. That line about Bailey is adorable! Ellis loves hip hop! Too cute! And with that Thatcher dies peacefully with Meredith by his side. Not a bad way to go all things considered. I’m surprised that they didn’t address what happened to the money that Thatcher inherited when Lexie died. Or that there didn’t seem to be any photos of Molly at Thatcher’s house despite the fact that she just visited him and Lexie is dead and he hadn’t spoken to Meredith in years.

We finally got to see Harriet for the first time this season! I liked the way they did Catherine’s storyline this episode. It felt really genuine and honest. Which makes sense since it’s based on the real life experience of show writer Elisabeth R. Finch. Koracick’s was being so arrogant because he was scared. Catherine planning her own party was hilarious! She’s always such a legend. ‘Koracick’s line, “Damnit. Even my arrogance is off.” Really got me. Poor Koracick and Amelia.

Word vomit haha! I loved the Mean Girls reference. Also I like Post-tumour Amelia much better. Koracick saying he was thinking about all the penises cracked me up. They brought back the superhero pose! And then they all danced to Diana Ross because of course they did! Koracick and Bokhee dancing was awesome. I loved Amelia’s line, “This is going to be a long day.” Haha. She had some great lines this episode.

Jackson pretending he was okay when he was so not okay was heartbreaking to watch. I liked that Maggie was there for him. His line, “He’s bopping over my Mom’s spine!” made me laugh though. Koracick couldn’t do it while looking at her face which broke my heart. I liked that Amelia was there for him. I loved that Richard’s path pen came to the rescue! The banter between him and Koracick was great.

In the end they get most of her tumour, but not all of it. She’ll likely have to live with this the rest of her life. But she’s thankful for what they’ve given her. We also learn that Koracick’s son’s name was David. There’s a great scene at the end where Amelia talks about how she is so so grateful for her sobriety.

And at the end we see Meredith and her kids opening up the presents that Thatcher got on his travels that he left for them. And Bailey said funny! I’m glad Bailey has more lines now and more screen time! And he’s credited now alongside Zola! Good for him. According to the promo it looks like it’s DeLuca vs. Link in the next episode! We’ll see who wins. I’m hoping it’s Link as DeLuca is WAY too immature for her. We’ll have to wait and see.
