I only have experience with mechanics in the UK, so I've tried my best with this one! "I just recently got interested in Travis K. X reader stories and wanted to let you know, I read all of yours as quickly as I could. They are so well done and I couldn’t help but laugh/giggle and feel through each word you typed out. You’re doing amazing and I’m so glad to have stumbled onto your page. CHAPTER 1

You wiped the beads of sweat from your forehead with the back of your hand, grabbing your water bottle with the other and slowly gulping down the cool liquid. Taking a deep breath, you closed the hood of the car and gave Jordan a nod of your head to signal that you were finished.

"Thanks, Y/N." He said as he made his way towards you, "I knew you'd figure it out."

"Don't sweat it. You almost had it, bro." You smiled, wiping your hands on the towel that hung from your waistband.

"You're the best." He grinned as he got into the car and started up the engine with ease.

The purring of the motor combined with the sounds of the drills and hydraulics pierced through your ear and although you were used to them, a slight headache was looming. You headed to the small garage office, massaging your temples on the way.

The office door was battered and covered in grease from years of being pushed open by dirty hands, and as it swung open, you were greeted by a smiling face.

"Hey honey!"

"Hey Dad." You said wearily as you pulled open one of the drawers of the desk.

"Oh dear." He groaned, "What's up? That Chevy pushin' against you?"

You shook your head gently as you picked up the bottle of Aspirin, "No, no...I finished it."

"That's my girl."

"Just...I didn't sleep great last night and I got a migraine coming on." You tipped out a couple of tablets into the palm of your hand before popping them into your mouth.

"I'll steer clear of you today then...I wouldn't want to poke the bear." He joked as he opened the door, disappearing onto the shop floor.

"Ha ha." You said flatly, swallowing the Aspirin with a mouthful of water.

The bell above the front door rang and you turned around, plastering a fake smile on your face.

"Good mornin', sir. How can I-"

"Yeah, can I speak to a car mechanic, please?" His eyes were stuck to the phone screen in his hand.

You quietly cleared your throat, clearing away your immediate frustration, "Well, lucky for you, sir, I am one."

The man in front of you looked up and paused, blinking a couple of times before his mouth dropped open, "Oh, I'm so sorry, ma'am."

"Happens all of the time." Your lips curled slightly into a smile, "What can I help you with?"

His eyes darted across your dishevelled appearance, almost narrowing with curiosity as he looked at you. Your hair was pulled back and a colourful scarf was covering your hair as best you could. You were wearing one of your Dad's old band shirts, grease and oil stains adorning any space they could and your navy blue coveralls were pulled down and tied at your waist to relieve you from the blistering heat. You blew a rouge piece of hair away from your face and waited patiently as he reached for his keys and gently placed them on the desk in front of you.

"My uhh...car. I was driving down the highway and...it just-" He stumbled.

You slid the keys closer to you, "I'll take a look."

He ran his hands through his beard, "Thank you. And can I please apologise for what I said? Today is not my day and I just-"

"Honestly, it's really not necessary. Like I said, it happens all of the time. Mechanic isn't really a 'typical career' for a woman." You bent your fingers in the air as you spoke, reciting words that you had heard many times before.

The man exhaled a laugh, his eyes gentle yet piercing, "I gotta say, it's pretty impressive. I'm useless when it comes to stuff like this."

You smiled, an uncomfortable silence filling the room.

"So, if I could take your number and I'll call you later today?"

"Uhh yeah." He mumbled, jotting the digits down on the pad positioned next to your hand before turning back to the door. "And I'm sorry...again."

"It's fine..." You glanced down at the pad, "...Mr Kelce."

I still think it's funny how Flynn created Tangle because, according to him, there are no female characters who can keep up with Sonic on his adventures and be cool. But then you realize that Tangle is basically what if Amy was a tomboy; he really has a weird bias, huh?

Flynn has a very narrow view on what constitutes a writable female character. I still haven't forgotten when he reduced Rouge down to her "Odd sex appeal for a cartoon Bat."

I understand not liking something or that it is not to your taste. But I am tired of things that I like being shit on constantly. If you don't like it or prefer something else, don't keep bringing it up or getting rude at someone else for liking it. Of course, this post is about the whole IDW vs Archie, but I believe it can be applied to many things.

I grew up with Archie somewhat, but only a Readers Digest every 4-6 months because we rarely went out. I grew up with disjointed comics and honestly? bad art. I have some of Tracy Yardley's back before he really got into a groove and colourers didn't really seem to care so there were lots of off-model colouring. When we finally got internet at my age of 14/15, I was immediately drawn in by the UK's Sonic the Comic. It was odd, it was trippy, and overall very memorable and fun for me (even if unintentionally). Amy was my favorite character and I would draw and write her like STC's scrappy tomboy Amy (doesn't help that I was doing archery at the time so I latched onto a cool female archer character). However, there wasn't very much recognition for my favorite comic, so I made do with Archie.

When Archie Sonic was canceled, I was upset a bit, but I saw it coming (fuck Ken Penders). When IDW picked it up, the consistent art and bright colours lured me in as well as building off of what Forces should've been (which is to say "good"). I loved Tangle and Whisper and for a bit Whisper was my new fixation (Rouge will forever be my absolute favorite Sonic female). But I noticed a massive amount of hate. I knew this would happen because fandoms rarely let a cancellation slide, let alone a fandom like Sonic. Especially to be replaced by another series with no returning original cast.

However, I was hoping it would disappear over time and Archie Sonic is remembered as "fun, dramatic, and mostly well written." especially as it was the longest running video game based comic ever (that I know of). But it hasn't. IDW isn't perfect, Ian Flynn isn't perfect, Sega isn't perfect, nor is Sonic Team. The writing can be off, Flynn does have the odd urge to put random music lyrics into dialogue awkwardly, Shadow is...off putting for any fan to say the least, the pacing could be better, and the constant delays are incredibly annoying.

Criticism is one thing, but constant hate and shit stirring is another. Please stop and be kind to your fellow fans. There are plenty of Sonic media for anyone. Whether it be games; Classic era, Adventure era, "modern" era, etc. Shows; SATAM, AOSTH, Prime, Boom, Underground. Movies; Sonic Cinematic Universe, OVA. Or Comics; Archie, IDW, STC, manga, etc.

So please calm down and either enjoy or at least appreciate what we have or go back and reread what you already love. Or make your own. That is always an option. I do sometimes, I even created a "Reboot" universe of sorts with my sister (though i am too scared to share it)

I'll have to be frank, but IDW is full of 'strong independent tomboys and not like other girls' that it's not even funny anymore.

The comic has not become a clown, but a whole circus.

I'd argue instead that IDW girls are usually shoved into two groups: badass girlbosses whose only value is how badass they are, or ineffectual cuties sometimes milked for drama points.

Girlbosses: pre-Chao Race Arc Amy, Blaze, Surge, Flynn!Lanolin

Cuties: Cream, post-Chao Race Arc Amy, Jewel, ABT!Lanolin, Belle, Tangle

Whisper is both. She is a strong fighter, enough that Silver calls her Guardian Angel and fawns over her, but she's also the main angst central and her arcs mostly revolve around her trauma. (there was a botched attempt to do the same with Surge, but her pain didn't really go anywhere, it was mostly mocked by Sonic and created weird hallucinations)

... and Rouge doesn't really do much to be shoved in either category :P I guess she's an honorary girlboss.

So yeah. Apparently there are more ineffectual cuties than #girlbosses. The problem is that those girlbosses are uniquely obnoxious :P or OOC in the case of canon characters. (Cream is also obviously OOC, as in her case, the problem is the "ineffectual" part - much like in Archie, she's treated like an average 6 yo to be protected and not the fighter she is in the games)

Before Dr.Eggman and his daughter when she seems so possible to him, Dr. Starline meets a babysitter with Mia toddler until she gets to know often. She admired him, so she will help him. Dr. Starline and Mia were close friends.

Dr. Eggman:

Mia and Eggman were close friends when she was baby and she first met. Because Eggman supports her adoption, he is her adoptive father. Eggman is always concerned about his family. Eggman will accompany her. Mia has a flashback to when she was a baby and expected to grow up. Eggman must be strict and discipline her. She will trust and respect him.

Reala:

When he met during the night, he teach to train magic or discipline her though young kid. She will know the connection to Reala has been given a golden mask like reference to its different mask original. She has been in contact with her friend, Reala.

Rough the Skunk:

Mia and Rough were good friends when she first met because she tried to help and someone captured Sonic. She seems to be very attractive and childish, but also know his oldest brother, Tumble.

Orbot :

Mia and Orbot were close friends when she first met because he always cared for her but replaced her. She feels treated by her little brother. Mia is always caring and helping him. Mia should take responsibility for only Orbot because he is too young and because he is the smarter, more serious, and firmer of the two, while Cubot is just as prone to bumbling around as he is. Orbot speaks calmly, formally, and without a filter. He is honest to a fault and offers unsolicited, withering assessments of his master. She will trust and respect him.

Cubot :

Mia and Cubot were close friends when they first met because he always cared for her but replaced her. She was also treated by her little brother. Mia used to make fun of him because he was both funny and clumsy. Mia is always caring and helping him. Mia feels responsible for only Cubot because he is too young, very dimwitted, slow on the uptake, having trouble solving a puzzle meant for babies, and getting even the simplest of instructions wrong. In all honesty, Flynn already showed signs that he looks down on feminine characters who don't fall for those typical worshiped 'not like those other girls' characters. He shatted on Amy, Rouge and Cream who are coincidentally girly, while he praise the ground that Sally and Blaze walks on because 'girls should be independent, never ask for help, no nonsense, don't show their vulnerability, be a fighter and never be shown as weak no matter what'.

Because hey, he even have Tangle and Surge who are coincidentally tomboys too, and they seem to fit all of the explanation above. Who knows, maybe he'll add another tomboy character and we'll see what he truly thinks of what a girl character should be in the future.

It infuriates me, the claim that Blaze is the "Singular kick-butt character".

Did Zero spontaneously self-destruct here for no apparent reason? No, Amy beat the ever-loving shit out of him after he attacked Birdie. After running terrified for her life with him relentlessly pursuing her, she garnered the courage to utterly wreck him because she had something to defend.

I suppose Egg Utopia fell out of space of its own volition here....oh wait, Cream put it down. After beating Dr Eggman time and time again through the journey to find her mother. Is she a lesser character for being a 6 year old little girl searching for her mother? No.

How about Rouge being so intelligent and dependable that she is one of the president's right-hand women in SA2 and answers DIRECTLY to him? No, contrary to popular belief, she isn't actually part of GUN in SA2. She's an agent working directly under Mr President.

Tikal may be a pacifist and not exactly be a 'kick-butt' kind of character but that shouln't be the metric that her worth as a character an/or writability shoul be measured against. She literally gave up her physical form leading to her demise in order to stop Chaos from destroying the world beyond the Knuckles tribe's city.

But then again, these are all game examples. And we know Flynn is a SatAM/Archie devotee an doesn't even PLAY THE DAMN GAMES.

hmm i believe in my heart and soul that all sonic characters are just animals and the amount of ‘gender roles’ they perform are due to where they live and how theyve been socialized. so i believe characters who spend more time around and live similar to humans will pick up on their behaviors and appearences. examples of this would be amy rose and rouge the bat who i see as being city girls and they hang around humans often. plus when amy rose was younger she had a more tomboy thing going on which was really cute and that was before she moved to the city.. so that kinda goes along with my views! for tails i think hes just a little boy in the sweetest most little brother sense. sonic is a boy and tails is his little brother. i think hed probably be interested in xenogenders cus thats a really fun way to play with expression and i think tails is pretty interesting with how he views the world, hes a little science boy at heart but he also loves to have fun and he learned from sonic that as long as its not hurting the world around him he has the freedom to live however he wants! i love and appreciate literally all transgender sonic headcanons in whatever shape or form i think they are all beautiful

Genuine question, but do you think that the main reason why Amy is hated from the west is because she's a feminine character who isn't afraid nor ashamed to speak what's on her mind? Which is why they exaggerated her character to make her unlikeable, unrecognizable, and different from her japanese characterization ( SA & SA2 )?

Like people who usually ( not all of them ) likes characters that are tomboys, mostly they are like the ones who doesn't show their feelings or vulnerability easily because to them ( and maybe in the west's POV ), that being honest about yourself makes you weak.

But then those same tomboy characters have an arc where they learn that they should not be afraid to speak what they're feeling and that it doesn't make them 'weak'.

This isn't a competition on which is better, but I found it hypocritical that feminine girls are not allowed to be honest with themselves but the tomboys somehow needed to learn to be honest with their feelings.

My personal theories:

good ol' sexism. Female characters earned the ire of fans much more easily in the 2000s. Amy is a pink cute girl with a crush on the protagonist in a series that was popular with boys. She's not the only girl hated: Rouge was a "slut", Cream was too cutesy and had a stupid voice, Elise "kissed a corpse" and was generally useless, Marine was annoying... there is a reason Blaze has always been the fan favorite - hello, Flynn and "only butt-kicking girl"? :\

the flanderization of her personality. Amy was nearly unlikeable from 2003 to 2005 - some don't even like her in SA1. She was better in '06, but her "if I had to choose between the world and Sonic, I would choose Sonic!" all but "confirmed" that she was a selfish little brat who clearly would support Sonic even if he turned evil :V

related to this, SA2, the most popular and beloved game at the time, was downright mean to her, with Sonic & co. always leaving her behind like she was unwanted and all being treated like a joke and as a buildup for her only important scene. Oh, and I didn't forget Sonic pushing her face away in Generations :\

gameplay. Amy in SA1 was not the most fun playable character in the roster. She wasn't playable in SA2 outside of 2P mode. Fans didn't understand her playstyle in Adv1 and 3 and declared her useless; in Adv2 the process to unlock her is hellish. She sucked in '06. The only game in which she was fun (read: like Sonic) was Heroes, but Team Rose is seen as tacked on anyway.

values dissonance? The trope of the girl chasing the boy seems to be more popular in Asia (i'm thinking of Pucca). Funnily enough, Amy was meant to be the anti-Peach, and probably meant to appeal to the Western audience (Cream is what you get when they try to appeal to the Japanese market).

I do think most of her hatedom comes from her being "annoying", mostly whe it comes to her crush on Sonic - notice how that trait was severely downplayed from Generations onwards. She seems to be in between when it comes to femininity, although you have a point when you talk about tomboys having to learn to be more open (read: feminine).

Kimagure Orange Road ( A FULL BLOWN REVIEW because Final Thoughts are not enough to explain).

Welcome back....

Before I start this special review, something must be addressed. Last month, there was suppose to be a final thoughts post pertaining to Tropical Rouge! Precure. However, for personal reasons, the draft evidently had to be scrapped and will be reworked into a special post about the future of Precure; since my feelings about the past two seasons are being affected due to the pandemic.

With that out of the way, let's start this massive unpacking....of a review.

Exactly what is Kimagure Orange Road? What about it made this series so influential in the coming decades in popular media (including anime)? At first glance and in face value, my initial thought was this would be another 80s anime with a shallow plot and share a similar vibe as to something like Ranma.

Sadly, I was dead wrong, by the middle of the season.

Let's back up for a moment, and look at the origin of this anime.

Kimagure Orange Road originally started as a manga series created by Izumi Matsumoto, and was serialized through Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1984-1987. A pilot was filmed in 1985, which prompted a series two years later. The anime series ran from 1987-1988 with 48 episodes. An OVA series consisting of eight episodes was produced in 1989, with two films being released in 1988 and 1996, respectively. With the impact it has left during its runtime, what made Kimagure Orange Road so darn beloved to begin with anyway?

SYPNOSIS

The story consists of 15-year-old Kyosuke Kasuga, a teenage male with a secret: he and his family have paranormal abilities. Therefore, they have had no choice but to move from one city to another to avoid the same outcome over and over again. However, things would be different when Kyosuke encounters Madoka Ayukawa, a tomboy delinquent who can be a bit bitchy at times but otherwise, can show friendliness. On the other hand, there is Hikaru Hiyama, another delinquent who is childhood friends with Madoka and develops a crush on Kyosuke and assumes he feels the same (no he doesn't...not even close...why the fuck would she think this way wtf). Thus, a love triangle develops and a long summer of complications, drama, and hilarity is about to begin.

You'd think this would be another one of those romcom anime with one-dimensional personalities for supporting and background characters, right? ACTUALLY, YES AND NO. MAINLY NO THOUGH.

While the plot, at first, felt like something I could have seen out of another romcom, there are just way too many things going on to focus on the romance aspect when necessary. In fact, each episode has a “plot B” element going on that forces you to pay attention and literally watch EVERY, SINGLE, GODFORSAKEN episode from beginning to end or else, you miss something important; albeit either character development or shift in direction. For once, I kept getting hooked, wondering what was going to happen.

Oh, did I mention, the COUNTLESS TIMES THE WRITER KEPT TEASING WITH THE POSSIBLE IMPLIED INNUENDO OR SMUT????

(Given the standards back in the 80s, the anime industry really let themselves go so far before hitting the hentai/ecchi level of HOLY SHIT. Although, this might have been the start of the era where women or female characters being “damsels in distress” was outdated as hell. Hell, a LOT of heavy topics are shown throughout these 48 episodes that may have been a kickstart to a new generation of social exploitation.)

Needless to say, there was never a dull moment.

CHARACTERS

In order to properly explain my thoughts on the cast, I have to break it down into three different groups: the main characters, supporting, and background and/or one-shots.

Main characters in a nutshell

Kyosuke Kasuga is the older brother of the three siblings who has the ability to teleport and foreshadow (although it usually is raunchier than what it turns out to be, because teenage boys in puberty are always gonna have their “moments”; very natural to the human body). He does gain a couple new powers during the series, but I won't say this here. He is well-mannered, but indecisive when it comes to his two-timing situation.

Kurumi Kasuga, one of his two sisters; able to use telekinesis; energetic, can be emotional and defensive around other boys or men (especially Hatta and Komatsu); kicks ass without touching.

Manami Kasuga, the other sister (my favorite main); also uses telekinesis, but doesn't get along well with her sister; more reserved, and home-bound.

Jingoro: BEST CAT; doesn't do much except be a mascot, but he's freaking cute and adorable. Sometimes, he is abused by Kurumi (so help me God let me punch her). BEST CAT CHARACTER in my opinion...I demand a Jingoro plushie.

Takashi Kasuga is surprisingly the only one in the family that has no esper powers whatsoever. He does photography. He's just there.

Madoka Ayukawa: main female protagonist; best friends with Hikaru Hiyama, top student but also a lonewolf who has smoked and been involved with gang wars; obviously capricious (lol this is what they meant by Kimagure??) I do adore her. (Wait until I talk about the seiyuus).

Hikaru Hiyama: sweet, bubbly, obsessed with Kyosuke, can be a bigger bitch than Madoka, (Personally, I could not stand her for most of the series, until the end of the 1988 movie (and the sequel movie from '95)).

The main characters were an enjoyable bunch with great dynamic., espiecially the “love triangle dynamic”, which had me engaged in how this was gonna turn out. The supporting characters, like Hatta and Komatsu, were decent, although not a lot of layered dimensions in terms of traits or behavior except for “being mainly horny at the sight of girls” and “begging for love”. Yuusaku had more character development throughout the season than those two ever did receive; although Hatta could have had a little more.

As for minor characters, like Akane and Kazuya (Kyosuke's relatives), their involvement was short but memorable. (Speaking of Akane....*thinking the wrong thing right now when she should be focusing*).

Overall, the writers really took the time to make these characters seem believable and relatable.

Story Elements

Before I drop into my favorite portion of this review, I want to quickly explain a recurring plot point that ended up making this series influential. Prior to its premiere, sources claim no other film, animated series, or any other property at that time used this particular trope, as coined by TVTropes: Temporal Paradox or Bootstrap Paradox. (Of course, time travel tropes have been around longer than that.)

However, KimaOran implicated a time loop effect in their Christmas episode, which left Kyosuke repeating the same damn day...which inspired future films, tv shows, and anime to pull this stunt. (No, the Endless Eight arc in Haruhi Suzumiya kinda took that trope a bit too far where there was a literal added catch in order to actually get out of it; one that might gave stemmed from Groundhog Day).

Hell, people are telling me Groundhog Day is the perfect example of being inspired by this trope KimaOran started, although the concept originated from Urusei Yatsura, which predated the series by three years. Nevertheless, this plot device was done seamlessly with a dash of mystery left to be resolved.

(Not to mention, the tsundere trope was also used here in Madoka's personality; not the first to adopt this behavior but the same trope would eventually blow up in the 00s and up to present day).

MUSIC

Now, to my favorite portion of this review: the music. As someone who is trying to expand into older anime titles and the genre of city pop, this series had some memorable tunes. I'M DEAD SERIOUS.

Let's start with the OPs.

Night of Summer Side – catchy song; uses animation from the show itself with some original content; love the use of cut transitions, although it may have been a bit too fast for my liking. Still, solid opening for its first arc.

Orange Mystery – better animation; use of filters and color splash in some places, also inspired by the Take On Me MV (you know the one) with the sketch-like pencil style; not a bad song, but it's okay.

Actress in the Mirror – best of the three; stellar animation, has a continuous, fluid feel that transitions very well, and also ends how it began and I cannot get over the song. The drum beat was killer; and I just LOVE every moment of that OP.

Choose Me – From the OVAs, this was decent, although I was meh on the song itself.

Endings

悲しいハートは燃えている (Sad Heart Burning) – The best of the EDs ; no questions asked. The animation reminds me of an old PBS bumper from the 90s that involved a crow trying to retrieve water out of a bottle by shoving pebbles into it. The song, which is sung by Kanako Wada, is, in my opinion, her best track. There is so much more emotion complimenting the sequence and the arrangement is immaculate. (Highly recommended).

ダンス・イン・ザ・メモリーズ (Dance in the Memories) – This ending has a simple sequence, but the song itself has a mall rat music vibe. It sounds a bit goofy, but also appropriate for the time.

ときどきBlue (Tokidoki Blue) – one of two OVA endings; it's nice in appearance, but on par for an average tune

もうひとつのイエスタデイ (One More Yesterday) – Slightly better in animation and music...nothing special though.

あの空を抱きしめて (Embrace That Sky) – literal tearjerker, fits the end of the main series almost perfectly, but not as great as her second ED track.

Day Dream ~I'm at Your Side – I have no idea why the fuck this is considered city pop, when by 1995, the genre was basically dead to the sounds of bubble gum / teen pop and europop. This sounds more teen pop than anything. It's okay at best.

Most of the music used in the show were done by Kanako Wada, whom has her own distinct and memorable vocals. The OST is remarkably worth a listen. I cannot say or praise their music any more than that.

In conclusion, Kimagure Orange Road showed more than enough evidence to leave a lasting, enjoyable experience for me, as a viewer. Such a simple story about a love triangle expanded into this huge, complex concept involving time loops, drama, comedy, more time paradoxes, and social commentary; going as far as including such adult topics, like drugs, sex, alcohol, and the like. Nothing more can be said other than this:

Kimagure Orange Road, if it had to be placed anywhere in my tier, it is definitely worthy of an S-rank (perhaps 9 and ¾ mikans out of 10). As I said before, there was never a dull moment in this show. If you are interested in exploring 80s anime or even romance shonens, please give this a shot.

As for my opinion on if this series deserves a reboot: NO. The content in this title is a product of its time; a lot has changed since the 80s, and to just bring the original material back and adapt it from the manga could be risky. Not to mention, this may never happen, since the original mangaka, Izumi Matsumoto, passed away in 2020. Whomever holds the rights nowadays...is unknown to me; I can see a sequel series happening, but that's up to them. Personally, I see no reason to reboot this.
