Rolling Stone Magazine Top 250 Guitarists - The Omissions List
Once again, Rolling Stone Magazine puts together a list that no one asked for and it's a complete mess. Instead of analyzing craft and technique, Rolling Stone goes for popularity and mediocrity. Who in their right mind thinks that Joni Mitchell, not known primarily for her guitar work, is Top 10 material, but Slowhand himself, Eric Clapton only worth making it it to 35? Also, why is The Edge, probably the worst guitarist ever, have a place in the top 50 and Jose Feliciano, a master of classical style, not even crack the top 200? I can go on for hours about the inconsistencies, but for now, I will focus on the many guitarists that Rolling Stone left off.

Update (11/12/2023): Just discovered Doyle Dykes and he was another omission from the Rolling Stone list. Because I’ve hit the 30 photo cap, he gets an acknowledgment here.

That Rolling Stone top 250 guitarists list was garbage... but I think it's designed to spark debate & get clicks. So, it did what it set out to do.
Talented players who probably didn't hit their radar?
Stephen Egerton of Descendents/ALL.
He has an instantly recognizable sound... and they are huge in the punk rock world.
Granted, music/art is not sports & not a competition, but who else should be celebrated?

Freddie’s £10m rhapsody of hope for AIDS victims
World's biggest concert will pay for new hospital
ROCK LEGEND Freddie Mercury left a legacy of hope to thousands of fellow AIDS victims, it was revealed at the star-studded Wembley tribute to the Queen lead singer last night.
Guitarist Roger Taylor said a clinic for HIV and AlDS sufferers called the Freddie Mercury Hospital will be built in Britain from concert proceeds. Mercury died aged 45 last November after losing a long battle against AIDS. A large part of his fortune was donated to AIDS charities. It is expected that the total amount raised from last night's rock spectacular will top £10 million.
"This is something we feel strongly about and we are sure Freddie would approve," Taylor said.
“It's a means of using the tragedy to some good effect in bringing a greater awareness of the fact that AIDS affects all of us.”
Just before the show volunteers handed out red ribbons to fans, symbol of AIDS Awareness.
Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Liza Minnelli joined forces with the cream of pop and rock talent including DavidBowie, Elton John, George Michael and metal band Guns'n'Roses.
Supermodel Cindy Crawford, the 26-year-wife of actor Richard Gere, spoke of the courage of close friends who died from AIDS.
Global
"The more discussion there is about AIDS the more people can learn and everyone needs to help," she said.
The 72,000 fans at Wembley paid £25 or more a head.
It was also broadcast live and attracted a larger global audience than Live Aid, going out to a billion people.
Some fans fell prey to touts charging up to £250 for tickets.
Even so, hundreds of fans were prepared to fork out.
"I supported Freddie throughout his life and I will support him in death," said Steve Parkin, 22, who travelled from Liverpool with no ticket.
"He was the greatest and I couldn't miss a concert like this."
Jayne Browning from Sheffield said: "I came with £100 and I would be willing to spend all of that."
Protests
Guns'n'Roses were one of the surprise bands in the concert.
Four years ago lead singer Axl Rose wrote a song with the lyrics: "Immigrants and faggots spread disease".
Shows have been dogged by protests from gay rights activists ever since.
But Guns'n'Roses drummer Matt Sorum said the band would be using the concert to explain their behaviour towards gays.
"Axl has a few things to say about accusations about being homophobic," Sorum said.
"He's still getting flak from it."
Just before the show Axl seemed to be suffering stage fright.
He failed to turn up for rehearsals and missed a sound check, preferring to stay in his Mayfair hotel suite.
Liz Taylor presented George Michael with a brooch with red rhinestones set in silver in the shape of the AIDS symbol.
Then, in a speech half way through the concert, she urged the crowd to practise safe sex and use condoms.
"You are the future of our world, you are the best and brightest," she said.
Gay
"You are the shining light that will illuminate a better world tomorrow.
"Protect yourselves. Every time you have sex use a condom. Every single time.
"Straight sex, gay sex, bisexual sex — use a condom whoever you are.
"And if you use drugs, don't share the needle.
"Each day around the world 5,000 people are infected with HIV — the virus that causes AIDS.
"Just last week it was reported in the U.S. that there are 9,000 actual cases of AIDS among teenagers and young adults, with thousands more who probably don't even know they are infected.
"There are 72,000 people in this stadium tonight. Look at yourselves, look at how many you are.
"In two short weeks there will be as many new infections as there are people here tonight. Please don't let it happen to you."
She added: "We are here to celebrate the life of Freddie Mercury, an extraordinary rock star who rushed across our cultural landscape like a comet shooting across the sky.
"We are also here to tell the whole world that he, like others we have lost to AIDS, died before his time.
"The bright light of his talent still exhilarates us, even now that his life has been so cruelly extinguished.
"It needn't have happened. It shouldn't have happened. Please, let's not let it happen again.
"Protect yourself, love yourself, respect yourself, because I will keep telling you until you do.
"I won't give in and I won't giveup, because the world needs you to live."
At the show the stars poured out personal tributes to their dead friend.
Roger Taylor said: "This concert is primarily a celebration of and a tribute to our dear friend and colleague Freddie Mercury."
His Queen co-star Brian May added: "It seems inconceivable that we now have to do without Freddie.
Living
"This proud, vibrant, irreverent and passionately creative man surely cannot have been extinguished in the prime of his life.
"Freddie was denied the privilege of growing old but in 45 years he packed in enough living for a dozen lifetimes.
"A child of strict upbringing he was, when I met him some 25 years ago, an uncertain youth stepping into an unfamiliar world outside.
"But his head was full of great dreams and the certainty that they could be achieved.
"At the age of 20 he already lived the dream, and behaved with a gentle grandeur that demanded respect.
"He looked and acted like a million dollars, though he scarcely had the bus fare home.
"That never changed. Later, when his millions were safely in the bank, someone else always carried his purse.
"Perhaps in changing his name prior to our first record he decided to leave the fragile Frederick Bulsara at home under parental care and become the god Freddie Mercury."
Queen guitarist John Deacon said: "It's hard to imagine being here without Freddie. We will all miss him."
Elton John said: "Until a cure is found I won't rest. I've lost so many friends.
"I'm in my mid 40s and this is the time in life that instead of just planning everything around a career, you can try to do something else."
George Michael said: "Freddie Mercury was a great inspiration to me and I felt a genuine loss when he died.
"So this concert will be a strange mixture of honour and sadness.
"Hopefully it will also serve as one more opportunity to fight against AIDS.”

Just a quick one this week. If you’d like this newsletter delivered to your inbox each week (it’s free and available to everyone), you can sign up here. Thank You! This week’s newsletter is going to be a quick one. Over the past few weeks I’ve been using my free time to write a review of Blink-182’s new album, One More Time…, and I published it yesterday. With all my extra mental energy going into that, I need at least a week to recoup and give my writing muscles some time to recover. I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for all the kind words sent my way over the past few days in regards to the review. I won’t have time to go thank every person individually, but please know I read your words and they touched me. I’ve always known this band resonated with people and to see that reflected by so many, and how many people connected with what I wrote, means so much to me. Thank you. When I sat down and started writing I quickly knew I wanted this to be my defining piece about the band. I’ve written about them for years, reviewed a lot of their albums in various forms, but never wrote the piece about what they mean to me (and so many others), and I wanted to give that a shot. I wanted that to exist in the world. In the end, it’s probably my favorite thing I’ve ever written. As I said on a few social media posts: My whole thing, from the start, is that I’ve wanted to treat this genre seriously when no one else did. I hope you can relate. If not with this specific band, to one that’s changed your life. Thank you for reading! And for subscribing to this newsletter. I’ll be back soon! Lots of other great music coming up to write about: Gaslight Anthem, Taking Back Sunday, KC Rae! And all the stuff from the past few weeks that came out while I was head down finishing the review: Menzingers, awakebutstillinbed, Boys Like Girls, Callous Daoboys, Marvelous 3, Citizen, and others I’m probably forgetting. Coca Cola by Dizzy Box Nine #Rock #Pop #Indie #CocaCola
If reviewers such as Hollywood Digest, Dancing About Architecture, Indie Pulse Music, Woke Chimp, and Vents Magazine provide any indication, the L.A. indie-rock/pop group Dizzy Box Nine uses elements of “innate intuition” to create music that is “invigorating and moving” and blends “West Coast punk/rock charm” with “80s new wave,” “pop-punk,” and “alt-rock” stylistics, creating “authentic” music that is “warm like the Venice Beach sidewalks.” Dizzy Box Nine has been compared to bands such as the Refreshments, Jimmy Eat World, the Police, Enanitos Verdes, RHCP, and MxPx. Dizzy Box Nine has crafted its own signature sound that is unique and stands on its own.
Dizzy Box Nine was created in the summer of 2016 by singer-guitarist Randy Ludwig, and features guitarist Tony Robles, drummer Amos Przekaza, and Joaquin Sierra on bass. On October 15th 2021, they released the album Last Call Before the Fall. This is the follow-up to Faster Than Anticipation, which peaked at #176 on the college radio charts, where it remained in the top 250 for seven straight weeks! Last Call Before the Fall features 12 unique tracks, that all interestingly fit together to reveal different angles of a melodic journey. Yet, “this is not just a collection of catchy 3-chord pop songs, there’s actually an interesting level of depth, melodicism, and authenticity to these songs” (L.A. Music Press). To date, Last Call Before the Fall has peaked at #165 on the college radio charts, and was hovering around the top 200 for six straight weeks!
Singer-guitarist Randy Ludwig says, “we strive to create songs that feel good to listen to, but we also strive to create pictures and images with our lyrics and with our sounds. We want to connect with the listener in meaningful ways, while still creating something that feels good to listen to.” He continues, “a good song can serve as a time-travel device, sometimes taking you into the past, and at other times taking you into the future.”

The Devil In The Details: SKiN GRAFT Records at 150 – a multi-artist interview on “Sounds To Make You Shudder!”
SKiN GRAFT Records just turned 150 catalog numbers old and have marked the occasion with “Sounds To Make You Shudder!”, a collection of fifteen songs (by seventeen artists) that the label describes as a “Halloween Long Player that plays fast and loose any time of the year”.
The album brings together longtime associates such as The Flying Luttenbachers, Jim O’Rourke and Strangulated Beatoffs, current acts like Terms, Lovely Little Girls and Tijuana Hercules, new signees Cuntroaches and Pili Coit – and some totally unexpected collaborations.
“Sounds To Make You Shudder!” sees The Jesus Lizard’s David Yow morph into a horror host frontman for the dark, chaotic math rock of , while Thee Oh Sees’ John Dwyer performs sci-fi, micro-surgery on Psychic Graveyard.
On the eve of the album’s release, we caught up with many of the participants for a virtual round table on how “Sounds To Make You Shudder!” came to be.
What can you tell us about your contribution to this project? How did you get involved? Are there any details or insight that you can share?
MARK FISCHER (Owner, Founder of SKiN GRAFT Records): SKiN GRAFT evolved out of a hardcore punk comic-zine that I did back in the 80’s, and in the comic book world, anniversary issues were always very important and something to celebrate: issue 100, issue 250 and on and on… I knew that we were coming up on SKiN GRAFT Record number 150 – and I’d had something in mind – but it was becoming more and more clear that it was not going to be possible to have that particular project ready in time.
Meanwhile, a bunch of the bands I work with – Terms, Psychic Graveyard, Child Abuse and USA Nails – had all been invited to play at the No Coast noise rock festival happening in Texas at the end of October. On top of that, Cuntroaches had nearly finished this wild Halloween-themed video for a song they had been working on, but with the maddeningly-long turnaround times we’re seeing at the vinyl pressing plants currently, there was no way to get even a 7” single out in time for the holiday. It’s pretty cruel, bands finally have an opportunity to go out and play live again, but now there’s no guarantee their album will be out by the time they get in the van.
So late in the summer, with all of this swirling around in my head, I hit upon the idea of a Halloween album and started contacting some bands to see if it would be possible to put something together – – – – and it was!
To make it out by Halloween 2022, vinyl was obviously out of the question, so we went with CD / Tape / Digital so it could be turned around fast. Most of the songs were recorded within the last few months. I got lucky. There were a lot of really happy circumstances. Dazzling Killmen were the very first band SKiN GRAFT worked with and while the band is long gone now, all of the members have continued to make music. It just so happened that Nick, the singer and guitarist, had started a new band called Upright Forms and Dazzling Killmen’s drummer Blake had also just started performing with his new band Shatter On Impact. Both bands are making their debut here.
As all of the songs started to come in and I worked on the sequence, it broke down into three “acts” (in this case, five songs apiece) – a lot like “Camp SKiN GRAFT”, the compilation I’d put together as the label’s 50th release twenty years earlier. I hadn’t anticipated it, but I suppose this turned out to be a kind of spiritual successor to that.
SKiN GRAFT Records Presents… Sounds To Make You Shudder! by Various Artists (David Yow & Yowie, USA Nails, Psychic Graveyard & John Dwyer, etc)
I’m so humbled, proud and blown away by the work everyone put into this thing. This album came together in record time; it was a thrill hearing these songs come in, and I’m even more excited to see them go out.
YOWIE “The Spider’s Greeting” collaboration with David Yow
SKiN GRAFT Records Presents… Sounds To Make You Shudder! by David Yow and Yowie
Shawn O’Connor aka The Defenestrator: Mark from SKiN GRAFT came to me with this idea and asked if Yowie was interested. For the younglings, some exposition may be required: The notion was that “Sounds That Make You Shudder!” would basically be an homage to those 1970s records made for kids’ Halloween parties, and Mark wanted to include some kind of Dracula-type narrator at the beginning, the kind of thing that is usually accompanied by lots of creaking doors and rattling chains and screaming. David Yow was on board to do an opening track wherein he would play a role not unlike the Cryptkeeeper (or that wonderful narrator from “Tales from the Darkside”) and Yowie was asked to do the incidental music.
My initial response was, “I don’t think we are the right band.” And that was very difficult to say, because I grew up on Scratch Acid and The Jesus Lizard and Pigface, so the idea of doing a track with David felt astoundingly good. And Halloween is the only holiday I actually enjoy, and consensually participate in, and so it seemed fun. But there was one problem – I don’t think Yowie is really much of an incidental music band. We tend to pull the listener’s full attention. And when I heard David’s track alone, I couldn’t help but think that the perfect sounds to accompany it would be something like creaking doors and distant creepy moans, rather than intricately arranged polyrhythmic rock music.
YOWIE
I should also point out that Yowie has consistently had a particular process in composition, wherein we allow parts to sort of independently develop and evolve over time… so the notion that we would be restricted to the parameters of interacting with a recorded vocal track, of all things, seemed pretty un-Yowie. Nonetheless it felt intriguing and very different, and so I talked a bit with people who were in or around Yowie, and it was decided that we would give it a go and see if we could do something that worked without becoming un-Yowie-like. I will leave it to the listeners to decide; I think we did a poor job of being “incidental” but instead made a composition that generally fits with a spooky theme, and is somewhat meticulously composed to David’s vocal lines. Does it work? Does it make sense? Is it a Yowie track? Is it something else entirely? You be the judge.
CUNTROACHES “Borborygmus”
SKiN GRAFT Records Presents… Sounds To Make You Shudder! by Cuntroaches
Martina / Claire / David hivemind: We wrote Borborygmus – a seven-minute long noise / metal / punk / post-punk mash-up – to score a music video idea we’d been toying with for some time. It’s named after the ominous sounds produced by gas and fluids in the intestines. The music video is about a hungry witch-slash-wizard abomination with an empty fridge who fails to summon food with her toilet brush wand. The only edible option for the witch is to eat her own dog (spoiler alert: it doesn’t go so well).
Cuntroaches
The aesthetic is inspired by the 80’s television series Tales From The Crypt and other B-movie horror classics, so the original plan was to release Borborygmus with two additional tracks on a special edition 7” with the Borborygmus music video on Halloween in 2021.
It was SKiN GRAFT who suggested expanding the 7” material into a full-length Cuntroaches album and we’re happy with this decision! The album is in the final stages of mixing, so the music video will launch independently on Halloween of this year to kick off SKiN GRAFT’s Sounds That Make You Shudder! compilation. We provided a shortened track of Borborygmus for the it, so conceptually this aligns with our initial idea of a combined speciality release.
TERMS “Mouthful of Moss”
SKiN GRAFT Records Presents… Sounds To Make You Shudder! by Terms
Christopher Trull: Mark from SKiN GRAFT asked us to contribute to a Halloween themed release, and Danny & I both immediately thought of this particular unfinished (at the time) track. Work on ‘Mouthful of Moss’ began about a year and a half ago while we were putting together tracks for our next album, and it ended up not getting completed at that time. It didn’t quite fit the vibe of the rest of the record we were making, but it definitely has an ominous, creepy quality that seemed perfect for a Halloween album!
TIJUANA HERCULES “Dark Slide”
SKiN GRAFT Records Presents… Sounds To Make You Shudder! by Tijuana Hercules
John Vernon Forbes: Joe Patt (Tijuana Hercules’ drummer) and I started fooling around with the riff. I hadn’t thought about what to do with it until Mark came up with the idea of a Halloween album. I thought the riff had a William Castle horror movie feel to it and I could envision Joan Crawford swinging an axe while the tune played. As the recording progressed, Doug Abram joined in with a baritone sax. For the percussion, Mike Young played a bowling pin and maracas. Since the song was intended to be played around Halloween, we asked our friend, Brian Buckman to join in. Brian is someone with a deep knowledge of the supernatural and occult practices. He gave us a recording of interstellar outer space that he ran through his synthesizers. It added a George Van Tassel feel.
Tijuana Hercules, by Jeff Noise
THE FLYING LUTTENBACHERS
SKiN GRAFT Records Presents… Sounds To Make You Shudder! by The Flying Luttenbachers
Weasel Walter: I composed this piece for the New York lineup of the band some years ago, and we never got around to playing it, so I did it all myself (something I resort to from time to time). It’s an interesting milemarker for my transition out of New York and back to Chicago after 20 years absence. The current Flying Luttenbachers full lineup is currently playing sporadic shows and writing a new album.
LOVELY LITTLE GIRLS “Procreation (Of The Wicked)”
SKiN GRAFT Records Presents… Sounds To Make You Shudder! by Lovely Little Girls
Gregory Jacobsen: Celtic Frost, specifically the Morbid Tales album, has always been a favorite. Of all the metal I listened to when I young, that album was just so weird. I had no reference point for what it was. There was no pose and the sound was dreary, malevolent, and aggressive in a way that all that other thrash shit I listened to didn’t even touch. And that guitar tone! I always wanted to do a cover of Procreation – there’s a certain idiosyncratic swing to it, and the structure is simple and wide open to do a lot of fun stuff with it, like a blank canvas. The challenge was convincing the rest of the band who are more prog-orientated. Too much repetition!

USA NAILS “Horror Show”
SKiN GRAFT Records Presents… Sounds To Make You Shudder! by USA Nails
Gareth Thomas: After SKiN GRAFT released our split with Psychic Graveyard, Mark mentioned he wanted to put together a halloween comp and asked if would we be interested in contributing a track, so obviously we bit his hand off. We are all long time fans of SKiN GRAFT so are dead excited to be working with them again. As for writing a halloween related tune, I had no idea how to approach that so was glad that Steven took the vocals on for this number…
Steven Hodson: Being asked to be on a horror themed compilation initially made me quite anxious as I had no idea what to write about. I mean, I haven’t really watched any horror films for years. We’re more of a Paul Rudd household these days, though I guess some would class his work pretty horrific (wink wink, nudge nudge, snare, kick and crash) Am I right? I thought I’d talk about real life horror stuff instead.
SHATTER ON IMPACT “Amar’s Volta”
SKiN GRAFT Records Presents… Sounds To Make You Shudder! by Shatter On Impact
Blake Fleming: Mark Fischer from SKiN GRAFT kindly asked if my new band, Shatter On Impact, would like to contribute a song to a Halloween themed album. We weren’t quite in recording mode yet. We were doing lots of rehearsing and writing and starting to play shows, and so we had to get something down quick. The result is a completely live in the studio version of a song we jokingly called “Amar’s Volta”. I co-founded the Mars Volta and SOI’s guitarist is named Amar. To clarify, it has no relation to The Mars Volta, it’s just practice space humor. We thought it was funny, so we kept it.

Liz leads tributes to Angel Freddie
By MICHAEL SWAIN
ACTRESS Elizabeth Taylor last night led the eulogies to Queen star Freddie Mercury, saying: "He sang like an angel."
She told a 72,000 Wembley crowd at his tribute concert that Mercury, who died from AIDS in November, had been “an extraordinary rock star who rushed across our cultural landscape like a comet shooting across the sky".
Urging the fans to protect themselves against AIDS she told them: "You are the future, the shining light that will illuminate a better world tomorrow."
Miss Taylor, president of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, left in tears after being heckled by part of the crowd.
But after recovering backstage she said she hoped the event would be “a great turning in the tide” in the awareness of the dangers of AIDS.
Stars including David Bowie, Elton John, George Michael and Liza Minnelli joined the remaining Queen members at the show, which was hoped to raise £10 million to fight the disease.

Mercury memorial concert raises cash for a new AIDS hospital in Britain
Freddie’s £10m rhapsody of hope
By ANNIE LEASK
[Photo caption: BOHEMIAN LOOKALIKE: It's not Freddie in the crowd last night, it's a fan in a forest of hands]
FREDDIE would have loved it.
The aristocracy of rock, pop and Hollywood tumed out to pay him tribute in front of the world.
And last night’s Wembley concert became a rhapsody of hope for thousands of AIDS victims.
The drummer in Freddie's group Queen, Roger Taylor, revealed that a clinic for HIV and AIDS sufferers called the Freddie Mercury Hospital will be built in Britain from the concert proceeds.
Freddie died aged 45 last November after losing a long battle against AIDS.
A large part of his fortune was donated to AIDS charities.
And it is expected that the total amount raised from last night's rock spectacular will top £10 milion.
Tragedy
“This is something we feel strongly about and we are sure Freddie would approve,” Taylor said.
“It’s a means of using the tragedy to some good effect in bringing a greater awareness of the fact that AIDS affects all of us.”
Taylor told fans and stars: "Cry as much as you like.”
They did. Thousands in the audience broke down.
"You can't be here and not cry — it's impossible,” said Mary Clothier, 23, from Manchester.
“Just to think that Freddie is gone and all this is for him.
“Everybody here loved him and loves him now. I feel so emotional I can barely see the stage for tears.”
Queen guitarist Brian May's girlfriend Anita Dobson also wiped tears from her eyes as rock band Extreme did a medley of Queen’s Greatest hits supported by May on guitar.
Mercury's lover of seven years, Mary Austin, broke down within minutes of arriving and leant on her boyfriend Tiers Cameron for support. But actress Liz Taylor was booed as she gave a speech about AIDS.
A vicious fight broke out a fans set on the hecklers. The incident shocked many in the crowd.
“This concert was being beamed to the States and they will be appalled at the way Liz was booed,” said American tourist Lisa Greer. “To us, it's like heckling Princess Diana.” Liz carried on but left the stage trembling. Out of sight she was comforted in the wings.
Apart from that it was a glittering night of celebration as the cream of rock and pop talent joined forces to pay tribute to Freddie.
Bowed
Stars included David Bowie, who said the Lord's Prayer at the end of his set.
Bowie, dressed in a green suit, sat on the edge of the stage with his head bowed as he spoke the words. “This tribute is to remember my friend — your friend — who has died of AIDS," he said.
The 72.000 fans Wembley paid £25 or more a head.
It was also broadcast live and attracted a larger global audience than Live Aid, going out to a billion people.
Some fans fell prey to touts charging up to £250 for tickets.
Even so, hundreds were prepared to fork out.
“I supported Freddie throughout his life and I will support him in death,” said Steve Parkin, 22, who travelled from Liverpool with no ticket.
"Не was the greatest and I couldn't miss a concert like this,” Jayne Browning from Sheffield added, "I came with £100 and I would be willing to spend all of that.”
Just before the show volunteers handed out red ribbons to fans, symbol of AIDS Awareness.
Liz Taylor presented singer George Michael with a brooch with red rhinestones set in silver in the shape of the AIDS symbol.
Jewel
And Elton John gave Liz, 60, a £50,000 diamond ring in recognition for her work fighting AIDS.
Elton presented Liz with the jewel as they walked together in the grounds of his Windsor mansion before the show.
“Thank you so much, she said. “I don't know what to say, but thank you again.” In her speech half way through the concert, Liz urged the crowd to practise safe sex and use condoms.
“You are the future of our world, you are the best and brightest," she said.
“You are the shining light that will illuminate a better world tomorrow.
“Protect yourselves. Every time you have sex use a condom. Every single time. And if you use drugs, don't share the needle.
“Just last week it was reported in the U.S. that there are 9,000 actual cases of AIDS among teenagers and young adults, with thousands more who probably don't even know they are infected.
“There are 72,000 people in this stadium tonight. Look at yourselves, look at how many you are.
"In two short weeks there will be as many new infections as there are people here tonight. Please, don’t let it happen to you."
She added: "We are here to celebrate the life of Freddie Mercury, an extraordinary rock star who rushed across our cultural landscape like a comet.
“We are also here to tell the whole world that he, like others we have lost to AIDS, died before his time.
"The bright light of his talent still exhilarates us, even now that his life has been cruelly extinguished.
“It needn't have happened. It shouldn't have happened. Please, let's not let it happen again.
"Protect yourself, love yourself, respect yourself, because I will keep telling you until you do.
“I won't give in and I won't give up, because the world needs you to live."
Heavy metal band Guns'n’Roses were one of the surprise bands in the concert. Four years ago lead singer Axl Rose wrote a song saying: “Immigrants and faggots spread disease."
Their shows have been dogged by protests from gay activists ever since.
Just before the show Axl seemed to be suffering stage fright.
He falled to turn up for rehearsals and missed a sound check, preferring to stay in his Mayfair hotel suite.
But he turned up and yelled his way through two numbers.
Singer Annie Lennox dressed Freddie Mercury-style in a rubber ball dress.
Lisa Stansfield came on like a housewife in curlers and pushed a Hoover as she sang I Want to Break Free, in memory of the video in which Freddie dressed as a housewife.
On stage, the stars poured out tributes to their friend.
George Michael said: "This concert is a strange mixture of honour and sadness.
“Hopefully it will also serve as one more opportunity to fight against AIDS.”

Moving tribute has stars and fans in tears
FREDDIE MERCURY would have […] […] […] that the highlight of last night’s tribute concert was his most famous song — Bohemian Rhapsody.
The audience to leapt to their feet and waved lighters in time to the famous refrain, sang by Elton John and Axl Rose.
The unlikely duo hit the high notes in a totally different way from Freddie, but the rasping notes were all the more touching.
Lisa Stansfield and George Michael in a duet of one of Queen’s most recent hits — These Are The Days Of Our Lives — had fans in tears as they swayed in time with the melody.
Freddie always loved a party. The bigger the better, and the more extravagant and self-indulgent, the more he enjoyed it.
Last night the music world gathered to give him a celebration he would have thoroughly approved of.
From the moment his famous profile appeared on huge video screens at either side of the stage, a tremor grew around the stadium. Thousands of hands and feet clapped and stamped in time to a short burst of Bohemian Rhapsody as the show opened.
Energetic
Among the most emotional moments were video excerpts of the flamboyant Mercury at his best in outrageous costumes and dance routines.
Who star Roger Daltrey stepped brilliantly into Freddie's shoes as he performed I Want It All with surviving Queen members in an energetic set.
Brian May gave a performance which so eerily echoed Freddie’s clear vocal style that he broke down in an unashamed display of grief on stage.
He continued singing as his voice waivered.
The rest of the night belonged to the superstars of the music world who, one by one, stood where Freddie used to, in front of the remaining Queen musicians to perform cover versions of the band's most famous hits.
Among the highlights was Under Pressure featuring a memorable duet between Annie Lennox and David Bowie.
Liza Minnelli brought Hollywood glitz to the concert as she led the rest of the stars for the finale […] Queen's anthem, We The Champions.
The show came to a close with Freddie taking his own bow — a […] him walking the […] dressed in his regal […].
The crowd and […] alike watched in tears […] Freddie held out his […] and bowed.

Freddie’s male friends were so jealous of me
By DAVID WIGG
• QUEEN singer Freddie Mercury turned to Mary Austin for support when he was dying from AIDS. He rewarded her dedication by leaving her the bulk of his fortune and a £4 million mansion in his will.
• But her inheritance has included the jealousy of many of his friends. Here Mary tells us how she deals with the bad feeling and what she feels about their 16-year friendship.
Mary Austin tells of bitterness over fortune he left her
MARY AUSTIN hasn’t only had to cope with the tragic death of Freddie Mercury, “the love of her life", but the jealousies of some of the rock star’s male friends.
The fact that she has inherited a large portion of his multi-million pound estate and his luxury London home, has left many people feeling angry.
Some of them have fallen out with her over it, particularly Freddie's last lover Jimmy Hutton, a 44-year-old Irish hairdresser, who used to share his house and look after the garden. The 45-year-old
Queen leader did buy him a house in Ireland and Ieave him a substantial amount of money, but Jimmy still feels hard done by.
"It's sad that it has spoilt my friendship with a few of his pals,” say Mary. “We went through a lot together.
"There's no way we can think of the last year of Freddie's life without remembering each other. But all of a sudden the friendships have fragmented.
“It was always going to be awkward. And it would have been impossible for Jimmy to stay.
“I think it is a terrible shame. Unless someone hurt Freddie, I wouldn’t feel badly towards anyone. Jimmy's relationship with Freddie was not one I could totally appreciate, so it left me at an advantage.
“If Freddie was having another heterosexual relationship then I would feel jealous. But I could never feel like that over something I didn't understand.”
Because of her long-standing and close relationship with Freddie — they had a six-year love affair — some of his male friends felt intimidated by her.
“I was terribly feared and that's not what I wanted to be,” she says. “I only wanted to encourage Freddie to be happy.
“I realised that I couldn't have him physically anymore, but I could go on loving him mentally. I was strong enough to accept that he was bisexual or gay, it didn't stop me loving him. I never saw his boyfriends as a threat.”
APART from the six-figure donation Freddie privately made to AIDS research while he was alive, royalties in excess of £1 million from Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody Best Days Of Our Lives recording have gone to AIDS charities.
Last night's star-packed Wembley Stadium Freddie tribute concert, which Mary attended, raised even more funds.
One clear example of Freddie's generosity came the Christmas before he died. On being told by a male murse tending him at his home that there was a group of AIDS sufferers in London who couldn’t afford even a Christmas lunch, he anonymously sent them a full Christmas meal along with a gift for each of them.
While Mary, pregnant with her second son Jamie, cared for Freddie, her 35-year-old boyfriend of three years, Piers Cameron, a special effects artist and designer, remained at their flat to look after their two-year-old son Richard.
Her relationship with Freddie would have been difficult for most men to come to terms with, but Piers knew it would have been pointiess to ask her to stop seeing him.
Having control of his life was very important to Freddie. He flatly refused to be pressurised into announcing he had AIDS until a few days before his death and he never told his parents the truth behind his terrible illness — but they eventually guessed.
“I think it took a long time for him to come to terms with it,” says Mary. “He announced it when he felt he should.”
When it came to finding a loving relationship, Freddie often talked of feeling lonely and betrayed — even though he had many losers.
“He liked a permanent relationship and I think all the time he was looking for someone to love,” says Mary. But I don't feel he ever really found it."
SHE adds: “He was let down a lot by boyfriends. He'd become star and people went for the trappings rather than looking at the heart. And Freddie had an enormous heart.”
Mary intends to continue as company secretary to Freddie's companies, Goose Productions and Mercury Songs, operating from the home she has inherited. But how does she feel about going from a modest salary to suddenly having lots of money?
“It’s awesome. But I get over it by thinking that it still belongs to Freddie and I’m just using it.”

Three Minutes to Eternity: My ESC 250 (#220-211)
#220: Yiannis Dimitras -- Feggari Kalokerino (Greece 1981)
"Κοίτα τον έρημο γυαλό Σου ψιθυρίζω σ’ αγαπώ Τώρα θα χτίσω εκκλησιά Για της αγάπης τα τρελά παιδιά" "Look at the desolate seashore I whisper you “I love you” Now I’ll build a church For the crazy children of love" The opening shot, the rose on the piano, set the stage for such a romantic journey under the summer moon. And the soundscape created through the piano and instrumental throw us into this endearing scene, one which is also tinged with melancholy. Feggari Kalokerino is not only an ode to this beauty, but also an admission of craziness for falling in love. With such pretty lyrics, one can't help but get enveloped in this pretty world, where everything is so beautiful. The combination of Yiannis' singing and the woman's piano playing is also quite cute, albeit with some...interesting undertones to it. Either way, it's classical yet timeless.

#219: Liliane Saint-Pierre -- Soldiers of Love (Belgium 1987)
“Neem elkaars handen Smeed nou die banden toe Hoor je die verre kreet? Geen mens vraagt dat leed” “Take each other’s hands Come on, weld those bonds Do you hear that distant scream? Nobody asks for that suffering” Top ten opening themes of anime, haha. It also helps that "Soldiers of Love" is the English translation for the song "Ai no Senshi" from Sailor Moon (which I've listened to many times but haven't gotten that far into the anime...). That said, Soldiers of Love packs a punch with the instrumentation and the high intensity of the melody. The lyrics are a powerful battle cry, albeit one which advocates for peace amongst people. There’s so much energy and determination in Belgium’s host entry, one would prepare themselves for battle for a good cause. Liliane really delivers this earnestly and with determination, though sometimes the military-style get-up stands out to me the most when I watch it again. Though those two guitarists turning their ends as if they were firing guns is a cool thing to behold.
It's one of the host entries that is better than the song which one it for the country, which is something because J'aime la vie is considered a fan favorite.

#218: Beth -- Dime (Spain 2003)
"Cuántas veces te llamé en la noche Cuántas veces te busqué Por mis recuerdos yo vuelvo Y no pierdo la fe" "How many times did I call you in the night? How many times did I look for you? I return for my memories And I don’t lose faith" For some reason, Dime reminds me of "Die for You" from two years earlier--both feature modern pop bops with ethnic influences, both imploring about the state of a relationship (while they both want to make it wor. And they're both in the same key! At the same time, Dime holds its own as one of the strongest 2000s entries from Spain. They had similar flamenco/Latin inspired entries in 2001 and 2004, which were highlights in rather mediocre years because of their uniqueness overall. But the guitar flourishes here work well with the dance beat, and it provides its own fun.

#217: Svala -- Paper (Iceland 2017)
“Drawing every bit of my truth Colour me in with your blue” I didn’t actually pay attention to this song in the follow-up to the 2017 contest. I also didn’t watch the semi-finals, which could’ve led to me neglecting the song entirely otherwise, especially I've heard a lot about Blackbird during that time. However, the summer after the contest, I discovered the song and listened to it. And I liked it! (And then I got hooked with Svala's other songs through her different groups) I was interested particularly in the lyrics, which discussed a fight between one’s mental demons and anxiety. I like the English version more than the Icelandic one; the latter is a bit more optimistic on winning against the battle whereas the former really takes the issue seriously. The production, while a bit staid, added to the feeling of helplessness with its electronic coldness. The staging also tries to incorporate this, though it didn't work in making it stand out. (I did like Svala's cape and makeup, though!) While I do love "Hear them Calling" a lot, I had a more interesting journey with Paper--it grew until it became something I highly enjoyed. #216: Live Report -- Why Do I Always Get it Wrong? (United Kingdom 1989)
“You can do what you want to do now...” Honestly, this has to be one of my favorite British entries ever. While "Go" from the previous year gets a lot of acclaim because of its songwriting and Scott's performance (along with how it ended up second in the end), "Why Do I Always Get it Wrong?" is better on how it envelops a mood and could actually be found from this era (though it sadly didn't do too well commercially afterwards, sigh)
Whenever I do something wrong, or self-hate, this is the song I turn to a lot. The synthesizers drew me in—it fit well with the late 1980s-early 1990s sound elsewhere. It's also helped that Celine performed "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" earlier in the contest, which piqued my interest. And while Ray’s ponytail was a choice, it didn’t distract from how he delivered the song.
Despite getting more 12-points, it ended up losing to Yugoslavia by just six points that year. While not my favorite that year, I think it was the better one of the top three; it equally reflects the times and holds up!

#215: Tommy Nilsson -- En Dag (Sweden 1989)
“En dag vi alla förstår, En dag, när stillheten rår, En dag jag finner din hand, När vägarna möts förstår vi varann,” “One day, we all understand, One day, when silence rules One day, I find your hand When our roads meet, we will understand each other” My two favorites from 1989 are sonically different, diverging between despair and hope. I listen to "Why Do I Always Get it Wrong" a bit more, but "En Dag' would stand out for me in a few different ways, more from being just the optimistic song of the two.
The intro features really good brass, which leads way to the fun instrumental. I like how it builds, and Tommy’s interplay with the backing vocalists is incredibly strong. You get a sense of energy from the both of them as they send the song to new heights.
Basically, it's just glorious!

Final Impressions of 1989: It's a pretty fine year, both in songs in production. There are a number of good songs there, though not many classics which hold out in the long-term (except for Vi maler byen rød, which became famous in Denmark and even became the premise of a musical!). Highlights include an overactive conductor from Turkey, two children, and an awesome interval act involving a crossbow!
#214: Bang -- Stop (Greece 1987)
“Ότι κάνεις για δόξα και λεφτά Δες τι χάνεις, αλλού είναι η χαρά”
“Whatever you do is for fame and money See what you are missing, joy is somewhere else”
I’ve heard this song compared to Wham’s output, especially with its vintage rock-n-roll sound (wake me up before you go go). This doesn’t make it any less bad, with its charming tone and thoughtful lyrics about how a girl who only wants material goods should stop chasing them.
(This is another reason why sometimes, the original-language version is better that any other one--the English version to this song has goes on a completely different tangent)
The performance also falls into vintage aesthetics, with the suits for both Thanos and Vassilis and sock-hop style dresses for the backing vocalists. It's really cute, and the way they dance fits the scene.
On another note, apparently Greeks saw this as a favorite at the time, can someone verify that?

#213: Guy Bonnet -- Marie-Blanche (France 1970)
“Nous sommes là dans une douce quiétude Nous avons mis fin à notre solitude Nos corps apprennent de tendres habitudes Et Marie-Blanche est à moi”
“We’re there in a soft stillness We’ve put an end to our loneliness Our bodies learn tender habits And Marie-Blanche is mine”
By 1970, chanson was on its way out; in its place was folk, rock-n-roll (spearheaded in France by Johnny Halladay, who has a great French version of "House of the Rising Sun"), and psychadelia. Within France itself, some of the #1 singles from that year include Comme j'ai toujours envie d'aimer, Let It Be, and Bridge over Troubled Water (a total masterpiece, I tell you).
So, what does one make of Marie-Blanche, in this case?
It's a really sweet love poem, in which Guy declares his love for the girl. and conveys a particularly cute scene. Whenever I listen to this, I envision two lovers cuddling inside while watching the snow fall during the winter. There's a sense of magic and serenity in all this, and the lyrics match the pretty piano melody.
Basically, hits are important to keep the contest alive. But songs like Marie Blanche can pull on the feels in the right ways.

#212: Justyna -- Sama (Poland 1995)
“I czuła się tak marnie Poczuła się tak marnie Jakby Bóg, dobry Bóg Nie lubił pcheł..”
“And I feel poor Feeling so poor As if God, the good God Didn’t love little fleas...”
If 1994’s To nie ja represented something classic and hopeful, 1995’s Sama takes it and reverses it. (And in the grand Eurovision timeline, they're only separated by the last song of 1994, Je suis un vrai garcon from France) Instead of a young woman filled with life and singing a decent ballad, we have another one pondering herself, all alone, with nobody to help her.
Also, this is more of an acquired taste with its out-of-tune recordings and Justyna’s scream. But it doesn’t feel out of place within the 1990s, with its alternative influences and production, and I like Sama a lot for that!
Unfortunately, it also caused it to do substantially worse, which is simultaneously explainable and baffling. A good result would've made waves for future Eurovision entries; the 1990s are my favorite decade, but they did misalign quite a bit from the mainstream.

#211: The Shadows -- Let Me Be the One (United Kingdom 1975)
"You and I could have an affair/make sweet music, go anywhere"
Isn't this lyric really charming? I couldn't help but have a little giggle because of it; there's a sense of naughtiness (especially with choosing "affair"; are they trying to something illicit?) underneath it.
That said, The Shadows are mainly known for their instrumental rock, but Let Me Be the One has a neat melody line. The rock-n-roll vibe, which could be released within that decade, is light but lovely, and added a jolt of uniqueness to the otherwise poppy contest up to that point. The flubbed line in the beginning ("let me be the one who literally holds you tight", haha) adds to the whole thing, but they were able to carry on, nevertheless.
And while I like all the 1970s winners to some extent, I would switch out "Ding-a-Dong" for Let Me Be the One in terms of winners vs. runners-up; like with Sama, it could've changed the contest in a positive way.
